Who are TV's worst characters ever?

Jun 8, 2006, 12:14 PM | by Scott Brown

Categories: Television

101812__michelle_l The always-reliable Onion A.V. Club has posted a list of television's most loathed characters. There are plenty of gimmes (Scrappy Doo, Cousin Oliver), a few built-in debates (Buffy's sister, Dawn, pictured? Urkel, but no Screech? And, c'mon, Livia Soprano?), and two that hit close to home.

I speak of Coy and Vance Duke, the scab beefcakes brought in to replace Bo and Luke during a season-long salary dispute. During this dark period in American history, I was too young to understand what a salary dispute was. I remember thinking that maybe Coy and Vance WERE Bo and Luke, in disguise. Or maybe there was something wrong with the camera. Several pints of innocence were lost that winter. (It would be several more years before I grasped the significance of the Stars and Bars.)

Any-hoo, peruse the list. There's plenty to delight and infuriate. And as for your personal Most Hateds, well, that's what the comment boards were made for. Burn 'em up!

[EDITOR'S NOTE: Due to a salary dispute, Brown and Slezak will be replaced by two adorable kittens who will pad over the keyboard, batting a ball of twine, their precious paws striking random keys in the process. This will probably result in a better blog for everyone, so don't expect to see the boys back anytime soon.]

How anyone hasn't mentioned THE MOST ANNOYING whining, unintelligent, nagging, childish Lorelai Gimore is beyond me. Could anyone BE more stupid than her? God, she talks non stop, acts like a child, and oh I just want to slap her silly!

Francesca Thu, Nov 6, 2008 at 08:00 PM EST

If I saw Gabrielle Carteris in person I'd punch her in the face for ruining 90210 with "Ahhhndrea" Zuckerman. Insufferable dowdy Pretentious superiority complexed twat!

Liana Tue, Jul 31, 2007 at 05:13 AM EST

Emily Proctor is the worst!! i cant even watch csi miami because of her face!!! the way it moves when she talks gives me nightmares!!

M Petrena Sat, Jul 21, 2007 at 12:09 AM EST

Emily Proctor is terrible! Can there be worse acting? Or less eyebrow movement (botox)?

Marlena Sun, Jul 8, 2007 at 05:45 PM EST

Wow! I haven't even heard of half the stuff you guys are bringing up. I've barely seen Friends, just didn't keep my attention. I've never seen Buffy, though it sounds interesting. Love other stuff Michelle Trachtenberg is on though.
On TNG, when I first watched it my two favorite characters were Geordi and Wesley. What can I say, I loved Reading Rainbow at that point in time. Well, my liking of Wesley ended with the whole traveler stuff. I would have been fine if Wesley was off the show at the accademy, but that. Grrr.
Personally, I loved Joey. Kimmy, a bit annoying, but she was suppose to be.
Steve Urkle. Loved the guy. I wasn't sure what to do with Stephan, but I loved Steve. Sure he was annoying, but he was funny and I can so relate to the clutziness, even if not on quite that level. "Did I do that?" in that high nazel sound, okay that phrase was annoying every time, but over all I liked the character.

Amee Fri, Apr 6, 2007 at 07:39 PM EST

Dawn is just really annoying. i think she cannot act and ruined my favorite show

HD Wed, Dec 6, 2006 at 04:19 PM EST

I know this is an old blog but I stumbled upon it and couldn't resist. Here's my list (in no particular order):
Cousin Pam - The Cosby Show
Cindy Brady - The Brady Bunch
Boner - Growing Pains
Bookman - Good Times
Ernest T Bass, Howard Sprague, Emmett, Warren and Goober - The Andy Griffith Show
Jenny Piccolo - Happy Days
Esmerelda - Bewitched
Nicky - The Fresh Prince of Bel Air
Barney Hefner - All in the Family
Sam - Diff'rent Strokes
Ralph The Doorman - The Jeffersons
Larry Mondello - Leave It To Beaver
Arnold Horshack - Welcome Back Kotter
Seven - Married With Children
The Great Gazoo - The Flintstones
All the characters on Joanie Loves Chachi

WDJ Wed, Nov 29, 2006 at 12:53 AM EST

Emily Proctor ISN'T even "easy the eyes". That face is so full of botox, she can't even form an "O" with her lips.
Maybe that is why her voice is so whiney. Can a smile get any more FAKE ? YICK! That accent must be a birth defect...

egonza Fri, Jun 16, 2006 at 02:20 PM EST

1. Oprah
2. Randy Jackson
3. Tyra Banks
4. Everyone from Desperate Housewives except Bree
5. Carrie from Sex and the City
6. Coral from the Real World/Road Rules challenges
7. Ana Lucia
8. Jay Leno
9. Bill O'Reilly
10. Grace from Will and Grace

And to AG, who somehow found everyone on The Office annoying, I bet you think Full House is hilarious.

S.Albano Fri, Jun 16, 2006 at 11:33 AM EST

Beverly Mitchell as Lucy Camden on Seventh Heaven

Hands Down

Worst Character in Television History.

Stephanie Travitsky Mon, Jun 12, 2006 at 01:24 PM EST

One word: Manimal.

char Mon, Jun 12, 2006 at 03:38 AM EST

miranda and charlotte from SATC. how many dogs did charlotte go through by the series finale?!

Charlie Sheen Sun, Jun 11, 2006 at 11:44 PM EST

Cassandra's comments are hilarious! Other than her astute observations, Peggy Hill is a raging lunatic, and as grating as the actor who plays her, Ellen has never had talent, and could Phoebe be any less talented?

cassandra Sun, Jun 11, 2006 at 11:40 PM EST

Clinton has to be number one. Very unbelievable as a Presidential character, and the lack of any type of moral dilemmas in his life just caused him to be a paper character. I mean, at least pretend that you are debating giving the Chinese nuclear secrets or that you might not want to fabricate an invasion in Europe and a missle attack in Africa.

It was just bad writing and a bad cast, from the lead in Bill to the troll who played the part of the first lady. What idiot would ever believe anything that she said?

claudenorth Sun, Jun 11, 2006 at 05:29 PM EST

Three more...

Marsha Mason's character, and Daphne's mother and brother, on FRASIER.

claudenorth Sun, Jun 11, 2006 at 05:26 PM EST

I predict that the next great hated television character will be Tom Scavo's baby mama on DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES. Based on her brief appearance in the second season finale, I will probably not bother tuning in this fall.

Alison Sugarbaker, DESIGNING WOMEN. Julia Duffy did her best, but the writers made a huge mistake replacing the characters of Suzanne and Charlene with someone who alienated the other characters and completely upset the dynamic of the series.

Mama, MAMA'S FAMILY. What was funny in a three-minute sketch became unbearable stretched out to 30 minutes.

And, for the record, ALL precocious children, ALL unseen crying babies written in as last-ditch efforts to improve ratings, and ALL tart-tongued, oversexed senior citizens.

Riddlefox Sun, Jun 11, 2006 at 03:21 PM EST

The question was "charachter", not actor or famous person

* Father on MASH was terribe
* Monica on Friends was never funny and just annoying
* whinny voiced actress from Ellen
* Gloria on All in the Family
* Joanie from Happy Days
* Andrea from 90210
* Molly from Ed
* Natalie of The Facts of Life
* Skippy on Family Ties
* Comic Book Guy on Simspons
* Edie McClurg on Hogan Family
* Tony Danza in Taxi and Who's the Boss

James Sun, Jun 11, 2006 at 11:26 AM EST

Besides Vera's husband on Alice, and Anthony's obnoxious wife on Designing Women, ler me include the entire stupid cast of Babylon 5. smotty Mackenzie Astin on the Facts of Life, the two Fallons on Dynasty, the
annoying Chachi from Happy Days as well as Ted McGinley on any tv show he happens to destroy. And let's not forget most importantly the entire wacked out cast of Melrose Place.

Gf Sun, Jun 11, 2006 at 11:24 AM EST

I must say most of these comments are absolutely wrong.
George Castanza..the show itself to a large extent.
Bill O'Reilly-obviously it goes without saying he has attracted the ire of the far left wackos here..good.
Luther Gillis..ironically I just thought of him that day. Most thought those were weak..I am sort of split..grew on me a little better when he would get Magnum in trouble (bar scene)
Agatha and Rick on Magnum P.I. ..Rick was terrible and she was quirky..however, I would not change either one as it would not be the same.
Fran Drescher-great show. Niles carried the show for the most part.
Will and Grace-same as O'Rreilly..attracts the homophobes ire, the actors are perfect in the designated roles.
David Caruso is the reason to watch CSI: Miami.
Don Imus..you probably don't get humor that is not direct and low-brow.
Diane on Cheers was great, you know who you are if you don't like high-brow humor. Now, Kirstie Alley, THAT was a sad attempt at acting.
Rachael is perfect on Friends..her acting was better than all of them. Con't confuse the actors ability with the fact you would not like the character personally.

Most of the reasons given are easily seen as people with narrow views of the world. Hate, Republicans, hate gays (no, I'm not..not that that matters;) hate less than Yound and The Restless looks.. bingo, right on about Scrappy Doo. Like that annoying little charateer that eventually arrived on the Jetsons..flying around.

Nancy Sun, Jun 11, 2006 at 08:44 AM EST

To Christine: I only knew so much about Family Matters because I was pregnant during the last season, and if I couldn't find the remote, I had to watch that stupid show from beginning to end. I ended up getting weirdly hooked on it. But that doesn't mean I liked the show. But so what? If you have fond memories of those shows, then good for you! I like Friends, and there are a lot of people who hate that show. I still like it. Everyone is entitled to her own tastes. Don't criticize.

Arbog Sun, Jun 11, 2006 at 08:04 AM EST

Katy Couric - What a disgusting transformation.
Paris Hilton - Need one explain?
Estelle Getty - Every second of screen time was torture
Happy Days show - It was all stolen from Ozzie & Harriet
Steve Allen - Love him, hate his voice

Bobby Sun, Jun 11, 2006 at 05:20 AM EST

Worst actors etc., etc. etc. Whoopeeeeeeeeee Goldberg (like, yea, she is a Jew). The woman is black and is an African American who chose that religion. Also, the white guy she married and later divorced (remember Cheers? What a dork). Tom Cruse or Curse. Whatever. Madonna, Britney, and all the the others, especially, Paris Hilton. Charles Nelson Whinny,,,,enough already, we KNOW you are queer. Oh, don't forget the floating queer boat by the lesbian funny girl. She has never made me laugh, but I have vomited a few times when she is on TV. Ellen Degenerate.....give me a break. How many girlfriends does she need?? The list goes on and on:

Alan Alda from Mash
All the Sheens
Linda Rondstat
The Rollin Stones (come on, we all know you are bi-sexuals.
Queen Latifah (what? who in hell named you a Queen?)
Brad and AJ.........get a life (hey Brad, my sons are better looking than you).
All, I mean ALL Soap Opera Shows...........dullsville.
Joe Morgan (baseball). Hey Joe, when can we stop bowing to you because you are a god?

I have a list into the thousands, but, I am getting sicker by the second thinking about all the other idiots who think we are idiots.

Mary Ann Sun, Jun 11, 2006 at 05:19 AM EST

It has to be Marissa Cooper from the O.C. Someone said that they're glad she died. AMEN!! She gave a speech to Ryan or some other crud she was dating about how she wanted to Liesel from the Sound of Music and her favorite scene was at the Gazebo singing I am 16 going on 17. Was she trying to tell us that she wanted a Nazi for a boyfriend? Was this her way of saying she hated jews? She's such a bad actress and that show is so poorly written, who knows.

Also, the youngest kid on "Medium". Who is she related to that she got that job? can't act!! never combs her hair!! Looks nothing like the cute older kid who always wants to kill her - can't blame her, the kid is a pain. You'd think the mother would be able to "see" that one for what it really is.

chris Sun, Jun 11, 2006 at 04:55 AM EST

Janice from the Sopranos makes me sick to my stomach. Peggy Hill is a psycho, and Horatio from CSI Miami. David Caruso is horrible on that show.

g-dog Sun, Jun 11, 2006 at 04:55 AM EST

No one mentioned carrot top!....others I hate,
1.) jerry curl muscle boy on saved by the bell.
2.) everybody (myself included) HATES raymond!
3.) chris collinsworth and terry bradshaw - NFL today
4.) pat saget
5.) twinkee from buck rodgers
6.) the father from MASH, whiny b*&th

I feel much better

Jim Sun, Jun 11, 2006 at 04:43 AM EST

We live around 650,000 hours if we are lucky, and no there is no telling how many are wasted in front of a TV. Get a life people! There is a real world out there you know!

John Sun, Jun 11, 2006 at 04:28 AM EST

Haven't watched network television in many years so I would say everything on network television today is worthless drivel. Give me the "educational" channels anytime.
One nomination is R. Lee Ermey with his "Mail Call" program on the History Channel. How a man that was a decent actor in military films could have sunk so low is beyond me.

Bill Sun, Jun 11, 2006 at 03:19 AM EST

1.David Caruso(Horatio)- CSI Miami head tilted right
2.David Caruso(Horatio)- CSI Miami head tilted left
3.David Caruso(Horatio)- CSI Miami head tilted back
4.David Caruso(Horatio)- CSI Miami head tilted forward
5.David Caruso(Horatio)- CSI Miami head tilted down
6.David Caruso(Horatio)- CSI Miami head tilted up
7.David Caruso(Horatio)- CSI Miami head tilted toward the sky
8.David Caruso(Horatio)- CSI Miami head tilted toward the moon
9.David Caruso(Horatio)- CSI Miami head tilted like a dog
10.David Caruso(Horatio)- CSI Miami head tilted to hear the train coming

He is so bad ,he gets all of my ten spots, that is why I watch the show. Try tilting your head and talking to someone, it hurts!

Steven Sun, Jun 11, 2006 at 01:41 AM EST

I hate Peggy Hill. I love watching her fail!

also I totally agree with the Tyra comment. She needs to realize she's a model, not an actress. Her talk show is terrible, America's Next Top Model is terrible, she even managed to e terible on Wild-N-Out in which guests are supported by the improv actors. If Flava Flav and Fonsworth Bentley could do and Tyra couldn't...that's a glaring sign of just how TERRIBLE she is!

Tom Sun, Jun 11, 2006 at 01:38 AM EST

Ginger and Gilligan. Why the rest of the castaways let these two continue breathing, I never figured out.

Ross the Intern, from "Tonight Show." Holly, your comment made me ROTFLMAO -- as I vigorously nodded agreement.

Jonathan Archer, so-called captain of the Enterprise. So politically correct and blabby, he became a joke, the anti-Kirk. Actually, of "Deep Space Nine," "Voyager," and "Enterprise," the only characters who weren't at least mildly annoying were Quark and Seven.

I would like to defend some characters who have gotten trashed here: Dawn (c'mon, she's a kid), Calleigh D. on "CSI: Miami", and definitely *pulls off sunglasses, puts hands on hips* _I_ like Horatio Caine.

Adam Sat, Jun 10, 2006 at 11:29 PM EST

All this Star Trek talk (ditto on Wesley Crusher) and no one says Deanna Troi? You could have hostile aliens blowing the Enterprise apart, killing half the crew, and saying "kill all humans." and Troi says something like "The aliens seem to be very angry at us captain."
Thanks for the brilliant insight. Would someone blow her out an airlock now, please?

Nephylos Sat, Jun 10, 2006 at 11:24 PM EST

How about the jurors on the OJ trial? Great job acting (like he was innocent), just poor TV characters. They are by far the most galactically worthless "characters" in the history of TV drama, led by Johnny Cochran. I was in great anticipation of the spinoff, "The Search for the Real Killers", but I guess it got cancelled...

N. Sat, Jun 10, 2006 at 11:14 PM EST

I have to nominate BILLY MAYS. Why must he YELL AT THE TOP OF HIS LUNGS to sell me things? I can't change the channel quickly enough, so I don't know much about any of the products he hawks on various informercials. Get me a valium. Hmmm... While I am at it, Pat Robertson's voice makes me cringe in anticipation of another foot-in-mouth incident, so I change the channel when I see him too. The voice of Charles Nelson Riley on anything was always annoying, but I guess that was the idea. I would like Gilbert Gottfried to simply go away, however. His voice, like that of Fran Drecher's, causes medical problems for listeners. Nancy Grace is arrogance personified. I have read several comments from viewers who don't like the character of Nicky on Big Love, but I do like her. She is supposed to be uncomfortably unpredictable. The writing and characters on that show are fabulous. Tom Hanks is one of the executive producers. Let's see... Tom Hanks, Bruce Dern and polygamy. I just had to check it out. I saw the first episode of Big Love and was hooked. I even like the metaphorical opening showing the family in danger because their lifestyle has them skating on thin ice. I hadn't been excited about a season finale since the days of Luke and Laura on General Hospital 20 years ago!

NH Sat, Jun 10, 2006 at 10:36 PM EST

1) Bob Saget - Anything and everything he does, I just want to slap him for being such a dork.
2) Jerry O'Connell - Sliders was a decent show, but he's a prick.
3) Ross from friends...see Bob Saget
4) Janice - Sopranos
5) Randy Jackson from American Idol - I don't watch it but when my GF put is on, it's like "Yo dog, sup dog, you my dog, dog"
6) AJ from the Sopranos
7) The Cast of The War at Home -WHY oh WHy is this show on the air?
8) Roseanne
9) Ty Pennington - Host of the show that exploits the disadvantaged so Americans watching at home can feel good about themselves...and leaves them with the 200k property tax bill..i Want to shove that bullhorn where the sun don't shine.
10) Jeff Probst from Survivor - you're a big DORK and everyone knows it, stop trying to act cool.

1. Patricia Arquette's boss from Medium; scripts, in general seem they're written by a 6 year old, acting pitiful.
2. Victoria Gotti and the "famiglia"
3. Tyra Banks, and her idiotic comments
4. Hogan knows Best (everyone in there)
5. David Caruso
6. Judge Alex
7. Love is in the Heir
8. Jerry Springer
9. Judge Judy, she's obnoxious and downright rude
10. Desperate Housewives, the entire cast
11. holier-than-thou Bill O’Reilly
12. George W. and his speeches
and a lot more I can't remember

dribble Sat, Jun 10, 2006 at 09:10 PM EST

people read this stuff?????

Bev Sat, Jun 10, 2006 at 09:06 PM EST

With everyone mentioning "news" anchors like Bill O'Reilly, Joe Scarborough, and Sean Hannity, what about Tucker Carlson? Or Ann Coulter? Or Chris Matthews? These are some of the most annoying people anywhere!!!

Ed Sat, Jun 10, 2006 at 09:06 PM EST

ANY SOAP OPERA FROM ANY TIME STARRING ANY HACK WHO EVER TRIED TO ACT!

wm Sat, Jun 10, 2006 at 08:54 PM EST

Archie Bunker. A deliberate, viciously negative stereotype of everything and everybody conservative.

Trevor Sat, Jun 10, 2006 at 08:53 PM EST

First off, news personalities are not "TV characters," although there are plenty of obnoxious ones.

Two words: Gilmore Girls. Worst offenders: Lorelai and Paris. But when any member of the cast starts another one of their supposedly hip and witty tirades, I want to punch the TV to make them shut up.

kris Sat, Jun 10, 2006 at 08:47 PM EST

Diana Muldaur as Dr. Katherine Pulaski on Star Trek: TNG. Every episode she was in was like television constipation - uncomfortable and slow moving. I only wish the producer had her walk off a turbo lift like they did to her on L.A. Law

Jim Sat, Jun 10, 2006 at 08:46 PM EST

Oops, I was off-topic myself. The most hated character of all time? Cobra Commander. What a jerk.

And Ana Lucia. Awful.

Jim Sat, Jun 10, 2006 at 08:45 PM EST

I would like to thank the guy who took the bold step of including lawyers from commercials and the entire category of infomercials into his least favorite characters on TV shows. He just has a ready-made comment for any discussion board ready to be pasted.

Hannah Larson Sat, Jun 10, 2006 at 07:33 PM EST

Dawn couldn't help it. She was thrown in. Bad, but true. What if Buffy's mom had survived? It would have been much more interesting than Dawn.
Riley sucked.
Best scene in Buffy is where she kisses Angel and kills him. Beautiful.
Cordy was totally mis-used. She should have had more to do than to bear the ultimate evil. Good character badly handled.
Buffy was the best.

Fed Up Sat, Jun 10, 2006 at 07:19 PM EST

Entertainment Tonight. Isn’t Mary Hart scheduled to get her first Social Security check soon? Who cares about Hollywood celebrities and the stupid things they do. Apparently enough people with no lives of their own.

Paris Hilton. Talk about no-talent. If her last name wasn’t Hilton, and she wasn’t worth millions, she would either be flipping hamburgers at Mickey D’s, or living in some trailer park in Arkansas.

American Idol. Yeah I know millions of people watch every week, but for once I would like to see a panel of professional actors and singers’ judge how entertaining Simon Cowell is. It doesn’t take much talent to be a judgmental ass.

Infomercials. Just how many of these paid talents actually use the products they are hawking? The worst infomercials are the ones that promise hair growth. Scientific fact: There is no cure for baldness. And those doctored photos showing one person with no hair and the second with hair. Come on! Two different people in those pictures, yet gullible fools will spend millions on products that don’t work. Where is the FDA and the FCC when you need them?

Ads For Lawyers: Ever notice that eventually some of these “legal eagles” are themselves prosecuted for a variety of misdemeanors? How many of these attorneys have been barred from advertising because they got caught doing something wrong?

tvwatcher Sat, Jun 10, 2006 at 07:09 PM EST

OK, so everybody seems to love the Sopranos so I have tried to watch it and like it several times ....but no can do. All the fat tough guys and all the slutty girls make it unbearable to watch. A close second are the contestents and host of Deal of No Deal. Third, the commentators for almost any sporting event. Can they learn to just shut up and let us watch the games! Lastly, Will and Grace. Thankfully the show is over. No repeats PLEASE.

Anthony Sat, Jun 10, 2006 at 07:06 PM EST

Patricia Arquette from Medium. ( Maybe she can conjure up better scripts or find a good acting coach )

David Caruso (who seems to be really disliked on here, judging from the number of postings)

Jennifer Love Hewitt (Nice body, horrible actress)

Smallville. Like it’s predecessor Lois and Clark, as the seasons go by the writing get worse and worse. How many more kryptonite-affected humans are going to be included in each weekly episode?

Star Trek Enterprise. The Star Trek series died out when The Next Generation went off the air back in the early 90s. Deep Space Nine only got interesting in the last few seasons. Voyager was a disaster. The acting and plot line were horrific.

Television news in general. Gone are the days of Walter Cronkite, Huntley & Brinkley and others who personified professional journalism, only to be replaced with Barbie and Ken anchors.

Tom Poston. He’s been around since the days of The Dumont Network. I never understood how this man survived so long in TV. He’s not funny, or entertaining.

Buck Rogers in the 25th Century. Poor acting, writing, and especially special effects. What ever happened to Gil Gerard anyways? Erin Gray’s career went down the toilet after she became an advocate for the NRA.

Joannie Loves Chachi. Worst spin-off series ever!

The Brady Bunch. No wonder Robert Reed wanted to kill the writers of the show. It got worse when the producers decided to make the family into a singing group.

Tali Sat, Jun 10, 2006 at 06:34 PM EST

okay in meredith greys defense she has been hurt beyond belief and she has the right to be a little whiny ans self involved at times. HOW are peopel overlooking Callie form greys????? I HATE HERRRRRRRRR I JUST WNAT HER TO LEAVE ALREADY!!!i think she is one of the greatest charcters on TV. clearly Dawn fomr buffy was the most freaking obnoxious brat on TV ever.

Debbie Sat, Jun 10, 2006 at 06:28 PM EST

Rita Cobsby from MSMBC. I can't listen to her voice, it is SO grating!

tbird Sat, Jun 10, 2006 at 06:10 PM EST

wentworth miller, aka michael scofield, from prison break.
his one emotion is a pained squint.

hurley, from lost. "dude..."

that awful step-sister character in "Invasion."
she's got the worst collagen lips I've ever seen.
she also looks plastic.

Starbuck, from the current Battlestar Galactica series. Ugh.

I could go on and on, but it felt good to get that out.

Scotty Sat, Jun 10, 2006 at 05:58 PM EST

Two Words: William Shatner

Chuck Sat, Jun 10, 2006 at 05:39 PM EST

Roscoe P Coltrain wasn't pretentious with his middle initial. I always thought it was actually his middle name: Roscoe Pee Coltrain

Pat Sat, Jun 10, 2006 at 05:26 PM EST

1. anyone doing the news on Fox
2. Brent Musberger and Dick Vitale
3. David Caruso...he's a joke as an actor
4. Merideth on "Grey's anatomy"...whiney, self-absorbed, self-indulgent. She behaves like she's in junior high school.
5. Kerry on "Sex and the City"...more whining, over-analyzes everything and everyone.
6. David Caruso...had to list him again.
7. Entire cast of "China Beach"
8. Alan Alda in "MASH"...Donald Sutherland was SO much better.
9. Jack on "Lost"...pretentious, pompous and often wrong.
10. david Caruso...perhaps the worst actor, ever, on television.

Jenn Sat, Jun 10, 2006 at 04:58 PM EST

Dawn from Buffy was/is the ultimate-I wish you had died the first moment you appeared on screen-character ever. Whining, snivelling little gag meister. Kennedy is second (from Buffy also) and not because she replaced Tara but because she tried to be the butch in that relationship and she wasn't. And of course, don't forget ALL the Slayerettes. Okay, okay, the entire season 7 of Buffy was annoying and horrible. Everyone from Full House, they should be jailed for having made that show and so should TV Land for airing it again. And Scrappy Doo, the only time I rooted for a dog to get hit by a car.

Dave hippo Sat, Jun 10, 2006 at 04:50 PM EST

Okay, I thought Petticoat Junction, Green Acres, and F Troop were hilarious and original and not vulgar. Other than that, though, the lists were great.

I nominate the entire self-absorbed, whiny, yuppie-scum cast of thirtysomething, which spent their interminable lives bemoaning the loss of 60s idealism.

Also, anybody associated with MTVs "Sweet 16" debacle.

beezyg Sat, Jun 10, 2006 at 04:31 PM EST

What about the entire cast of Caroline in the City--Lea Thompson (Caroline), Eric Lutz (Del) and Amy Pietz (Annie).

What an awful show!!!

Gary Sat, Jun 10, 2006 at 04:28 PM EST

As this list grows, more and more TV personalities are popping up, not characters, eg. Kathi Lee, Anderson Cooper etc... I think EW should do a pole for most annoying personality. That list would surely be interesting. To which I would nominate Starr Jones. She is without a doubt the most grateing, egotistical, fake, non-human to ever appear on screen. She spends more time checking herself out in the moniter than looking at the person she is talking to, or the camera, or the studio audience. Anyone who labels themself a Diva, should be barred for life from public view.
Whew!
Back to the topic,
I forgot to mention:
Cameron Manheim on the Practice. She always looked constipated.
David Caruso CSI Miami, yikes he sucks
Ally Mcbeal

Top 5 Worst T.V Characters

5. Any cast from any MTV "reality" show
4. The banker from "Deal or no Deal"
3. A.J Benza in anything he has done , (especially that Cold Turkey show, ridiculous!!!)
2. Toni Ferrari from the many "reality" shows she has done
1. Joey Lawrence in any role (Trivia- Has he ever played a character that wasn't named Joey? Whoooaaa!!!

Chris Sat, Jun 10, 2006 at 03:50 PM EST

OK, since we're talking annoying characters, it would be simpler to just lump 'em in with the shows that they were on, because most of the time the show is just as annoying. So, here goes, in no certain order:

1. Petticoat Junction
2. F Troop
3. Hi Honey I'm Home
4. Small Wonder
5. Bill Daily as a veterinarian, don't know the name of the show
6. Everything on ABC's TGIF
7. The Wayan's Brothers (except for John Witherspoon)
8. Green Acres
9. Joannie Loves Chachi
10. Saved by The Bell (All varieties)
11. Futurama
12. Dinosaurs
13. Barney and Friends
14. Teletubbies
15. She's The Sheriff
16. Lost In Space
17. Seven Wives For Seven Brothers
18. Deep Space Nine
19. Andromeda
20. Charles In Charge

Jonathon from Blow Out! IDIOT!!

Beth Sat, Jun 10, 2006 at 03:19 PM EST

Dawn hands down is the worst...i swear when she screams "GET OUT GET OUT GET OUTTTTT!!!" i just want to punch someone

(and in defense of kennedy that chick while she had her faults was the best replacement for tara on that show. there was no way to bring in anyone who was going to be LIKE tara after her death so going with kennedy was a great idea and given another season would have really panned out well i believe. If you read any of the after buffy comics or the after buffy books you see the character development REALLY shine with kenny.)

i cant believe no one has even mentioned "vickie" on small wonder...that chick was REALLY annoying

also Jenny on L Word..i mean really...what the heck is her deal???

Max and his/her facial hair is really starting to run a close second though. *shudder*

J Sat, Jun 10, 2006 at 03:16 PM EST

The entire cast of real-life teenage superheroes that was on NBC saturday mornings. The cartoon characters were funny because they were cartoons, but they were not in reallife

HOWIE MANDELL

anthony Sat, Jun 10, 2006 at 02:58 PM EST

Worse character?: Dr. Smith of Lost in Space fame.

Patrick Sat, Jun 10, 2006 at 02:54 PM EST

Sean Hannity, Anderson Cooper, Rita Cosby, Geraldo Rivera - all self abosrbed and more interested in promoting themselves than the news. Especially Anderson Cooper - I am really tired of CNN telling me every five minutes what a gerat journalist that he is - he isn't! If he was they would not need to tell me repeatedly.

Ed Hammond Sat, Jun 10, 2006 at 02:49 PM EST

Bob Saget, on America's Funniest Home Videos (AFV)
I can only watch that show if it's recorded on my DVR so I can skip over him talking and then I mute his stupid voice overs. The current version is a huge improvement, even though the writing still sucks.

Ken D Sat, Jun 10, 2006 at 02:35 PM EST

Maude on "Maude"
Maude on "All In The Family"
Maude on "Golden Girls" (I know, I know. But I still don't like her.)

kingbad Sat, Jun 10, 2006 at 02:29 PM EST

3. The entire casts of every teen-themed "drama" of the past 10 years.
2. Ross Geller, "Friends".
1. Glory, "Buffy"- the god of bad home perms, demon goddess as played by a non-scary, bad-acting Jewish-American princess.

Nora Sat, Jun 10, 2006 at 02:28 PM EST

Wendy Jo Sperber (Amy) on Bosom Buddies...Andy Kauffman (Latka) on Taxi...all of the "Designing Women"...everyone on "Everybody Loves Raymond" (actually, we hate you)...Donna Pescow (Angie) on Angie...whoever the heck played Monica on "General Hospital"...the boys from "Miami Vice" (enough with the pastel shirts already)...Michael Landon in anything...The Skipper on Gilligan's Island...somebody stop me!

robs Sat, Jun 10, 2006 at 02:19 PM EST

OK, I agree I must add Ana Lucia from LOST as somebody to hate. But how about Howie on Deal or No Deal? He and the "Banker" are self important idiots with God complexes. And add the contestants who think they can "will" the numbers in the suitcases. They're definitely on the list.
BTW We call that show Real or Not Real. Look at the models to see why!

Bonnie Langford as "Melanie" -- worst Dr Who companion EVER

Bill Sat, Jun 10, 2006 at 01:25 PM EST

In no necessary order:
1. Any and all characters from Laverne & Shirley and Happy Days.
2. Jimmy (J.J.) Walker- I wish someone had "DYNOMITED)
his nether regions,
3. B.J. Honeycutt from MASH (The whine quotient of this series went up exponentially with his arrival)
4. Kim Bauer (24)
5. Agreeing with an earlier person Wesley Crusher, how I wish the Borg had assimilated this intergalactic weedchild.
6. The entire cast from Green Acres.
7. The entire cast from Hee Haw
8. Gary Coleman in whatever series he was in.
9. Herve Villachaise- Tattoo on Fantasy Island
10. Larry King

Mike Sat, Jun 10, 2006 at 01:24 PM EST

I would have to say Phoebe of friends. Most overrated character of all time. The "singing" was just awful, not even funny the first time.

Also the entire cast of 7th Heaven, David Silverman of 90210 (reminds me of Kevin Federline). Also one of the worst tv shows of all time, A different world. Man that was a bad show.

And to the person who hated Don Knotts. The Ropers were horrible. The show got better when they left.

MSTORM Sat, Jun 10, 2006 at 01:14 PM EST

Big TV LAND watcher;

Night Court cast-worse show of all time. Worthless.

Marissa Cooper of The O.C. and Meredith Grey of Grey's Anatomy.

you call this a list? where is the ensemble mention for the entire cast of "cop rock"?

MRP Sat, Jun 10, 2006 at 12:53 PM EST

I can't believe I forgot to mention Cameron from House (self righteous and whiny. Even on the rare occurance she is right, I still want her to fail) and Meredith on Grey's Anatomy (Where do I start on how bad she sucks? And she's supposed to be the "hero" of the story?)

tdog Sat, Jun 10, 2006 at 12:52 PM EST

Scott Savol that fat lard from American Idol last year
Ralph Malph from Happy Days,
Nell Carter
Charlotte from Sex and the city
Kathie Lee Gifford, for talking about her fossil husband and her demon spawn all of the time.
Regis

jim Sat, Jun 10, 2006 at 12:49 PM EST

Great laughs! Thanks everyone! However, there is no contest, Kristen Chenoworth in anything. That voice is enough to make me want to jump out a window. Runner up is that awful pair of friends form W&G or Urkel.

MRP Sat, Jun 10, 2006 at 12:44 PM EST

Devan MacGuire from Crossing Jordan. Dreadful.

Big Al Sat, Jun 10, 2006 at 12:44 PM EST

Bob, the erectile dysfunctional guy, on those obnoxious TV commercials.

The Volkswagen commercials featuring some German-accent actor trying to be Ghetto.

The GECKO gecko.

The cast of American Dad

The cast of that 70s show

Maury Povitch and Connie Chung

Bill O’ Reilly

Rita Cosby

BOner from Growing pains, I mean come one Boner?
Tina Yothers from Family Ties, also for her appearance in Laker Girls
Dawson from Dawson's creek-hated his Steven Spielberg loving ass
The guy that rhymed everthing on Newhart (stephanie's boyfriend)
Mr Belevedere
Buddy from Charles in Charge

Andy Sat, Jun 10, 2006 at 12:26 PM EST

I hate overacting. Those idiots that make stupid faces and wild gestures instead of actually acting.

1. Jack and Karen from Will and Grace. Awful, I have never been happier for a show to go off the air.
2. David Carusso. Is he trying to look like an idiot with his hammy, over-dramatized speeches?
3. Urkel
4. Everyone on Saturday Night Live in the last 15 years, especially Dana Carvey.

stacey Sat, Jun 10, 2006 at 12:12 PM EST

How could Dawn from buffy be on the list? yes she was whiny but she had reason. Rona and kennedy was the most annoying, willow didnt have the chemistry with kennedy that she had with tara or oz. Secondly the green guy on angel was a great character and his name was lorne. Ross from friends could be annoying but he was a part of the group and show would not have been the same without him. To jem samantha on who's the boss? did not have a brother, the boy was the boss's son.

my list for the worst would have to be oliver on brady bunch, cousin pam on cosby and her friend, j.j. walker on good times I know he was popular but pleeeease, the whole cast of the power rangers, pokemon, beevis and butthead, candy on strangers with candy could not stand to even watch the commercials, pat on snl, and barney tops my list.

wastingtime Sat, Jun 10, 2006 at 12:03 PM EST

Janice from "The Sopranos" and Nicki from "Big Love" equally inspire fear and loathing every time they make appearances on their respective HBO shows. Janice Dickinson is pure psychotic evil, although Omarosa did manage to make me feel sory for the ancient ex-model on "Surreal Life." This was no small feat, so I agree with toomuchtv; Omarosa is easily the most loathsome TV creature of all time.

Michael Sat, Jun 10, 2006 at 11:57 AM EST

1. Tom Willis on The Jeffersons. Awful.
2. Natalie on The Facts of Life. Unable to keep a straight face. (Though Mrs. Garrett was pretty creepy too. girls. Girls. GIIIIIRLSSS!)
3. That awful Charlene Tilton on Dallas. Bad actress, meaningless character.
4. Diane Chambers on Cheers. Nuff said.
5. Wayne Gretzky on Saturday Night Live. Wow.

toomuchtv Sat, Jun 10, 2006 at 11:54 AM EST

Omarosa. How many people with narcissistic personality disorder will become famous for their sociopathy before America finally grows bored with their antics?

steve Sat, Jun 10, 2006 at 11:48 AM EST

There have been a couple of Cosby Show mentions, but you people are forgetting the worst offender of all--Rudy! She was kind of cute the first season, but cute kid jokes only work while you are a cute kid. I hated Rudy!!!

Patty Sat, Jun 10, 2006 at 11:39 AM EST

Yes, I agree. Monica on friends got to be soooo annoying in the final seasons. She became a charicature, rather than a character. She was too over the top in her neuroticism.

maddie Sat, Jun 10, 2006 at 11:33 AM EST

Susan on Housewives
Joey on Full House
Ridge The Bold and the Beautifiul
Kevin on 7th Heaven

--Mama, Mama’s Family (worst wig, ever)

One question to all the people who have been ragging on Dawn Summers... Do any of you have younger sisters? I have 2 and I thought that they created the sisterly dynamic very well!

As for my most annoying/worst characters on television... Urkel and Screech both leap to mind. I think that my all time nominee has to be Kate the Lady Cop from Angel, though.
