'American Idol': Who has the most commercial potential?

May 25, 2006, 06:26 PM | by Michael Slezak

Categories: 'American Idol'

17570__elliott_lOne of the great things about the just-wrapped fifth season of American Idol is that -- unlike in previous years, where only two, maybe three finalists seemed likely to find post-show success on the Billboard charts -- the current (and very deep) crop could yield as many as six or seven potential stars. This, of course, means fans of champ Taylor Hicks, runner-up Katharine McPhee, and also-rans Elliott Yamin, Chris Daughtry, Paris Bennett (and maybe even Mandisa and Kellie Pickler, though the latter seems more likely to be the next Kelly Ripa) can keep hopes alive that their favorites will prevail where it really counts -- at the sales counter. Taylor's the only one who's guaranteed to go platinum, considering all four prior winners did the same, but trying to determine if the other contestants will emulate Clay Aiken or Jasmine Trias is about as tricky as translating a Paula Abdul critique. Not that it's going to stop me from predicting my top three candidates for long-term music success (sorry, Princess P!):

3. Chris Daughtry: No doubt, the bald-headed dude's humungous charisma and flawless vocals are going to land him a major-label contract, but his Achilles' heel, a sometimes questionable taste in music, prevents me from putting him atop this list. Sure, his ''Hemorrhage (In My Hands)'' and ''The Letter'' were awesome, but those covers of Creed and Shinedown felt a wee bit 2001, no?

2. Taylor Hicks: The anti-Soul Patrol troops say his gray hair and goofy persona will doom him to flash-in-the-pan status. But I say folks who are disenfranchised with today's shallow, videogenic output are gonna storm their record stores -- as long as Taylor doesn't get saddled down with too many drippy inspirational ballads. Case in point: Last weekend, my brother, who doesn't own a CD recorded prior to 1975, heard Taylor's ''Takin It to the Streets'' on my Idol Encores CD, and said, ''How come you're playing a good song?''

1. Elliott Yamin: Much to my delight, I've heard fewer and fewer derogatory remarks (and increasingly more raves) about Elliott's looks with each passing week of the Idol competition. But whether or not the guy submits to the dentist's chair, who cares? His voice is amazing, and if he taps into the confidence he showed during last night's results show (and Mary J. Blige duet, pictured), he could bridge a massive market spanning from Michael Bublé to John Legend. A quick listen to Elliott's ''A Song for You'' tells the story: The boy's a hottie, and soon enough, he'll have the sales to prove it.

Okay, PopWatchers, you've got my post-Idol predictions. Who do you think will be the top three sellers from season 5?

Meniva Sun, Jun 4, 2006 at 09:08 PM EST

To: Whatheheck

Elliott will definitely become big no matter what type of album he does. Even if it is his die hard fans that write comments on these blogs, it`s exactly what he needs to become successful. Inevitably, the Yaminions will individually buy his records by the dozens. You can`t even imagine how large his fan base is world wide.

And how could you say that Elliott has no charisma, whatheheck. He received the most rave reviews than even the top 2 finalists themselves on his performances on the finale. ONE for his rendition of A house is not a home and TWO his duet with Mary J. Blige. On a night with tons of stars, whether they are legends or amateurs, Elliott absolutely made himself known and put himself out there. Which other third-placer has received as much hype as he has?

Kat, yeah she`s okay but to last long with songs like "somewhere over the rainbow" can put an insomniac to sleep within seconds. If that`s the only memorable song that she has, it`s a question how long she can last in the business.

As for Elliott, man this guy can make an entire album from the great songs in this season alone. And looks aren`t gonna matter when he's selling millions of cd`s. i`m pretty sure cd`s are for listening. All kat can sell with her beauty and "good" voice as a professional singer are maybe posters.

And it`s Elliott`s great soul, heartrending story, and humble personality that made me a huge fan. he was practically the only one in the top three to not receive much time on tv prior to the semi-finals.

And I`ve been looking around these blogs for a while now and HUNDREDS of comments read that either Elliott is "hot", "sexy", "cute" or "handsome" So maybe you, whatheheck, don`t think he looks "all that" but millions of other people all over the world do.

I mean look at Clay Aiken. He looked like a college nerd who got lost on the way to his second class. But his looks have improved so much up until now. Elliott has more potential and room to grow than any other finalists so just wait for him to grow as a singer and a person.

After his first CD comes about, you`re gonna wonder why you ever wrote such words about ELLIOTT.

BILL Sat, Jun 3, 2006 at 05:59 AM EST

Elliott Yamin has the voice that will carry him to stardom. No one will out sell this guy. He can sing anything and it is always intricate and very soulful. Watch the star rise!!

Elliottfan Fri, Jun 2, 2006 at 04:39 AM EST

I Believe In My Soul was da BOMB! da Best! Blew it out of the park--fantastic! As wonderfully refreshing as A Song For You, House Without A Home, If You Really Love Me, Home, Trouble, If I Can Dream, Moody's Mood, It Had to Be You, the One duet with Mary J, the soulful rendition of I Don't Want To Be, What You Won't Do For Love, and the results show encore of On Broadway... Anyone hip enough to love Donny Hathaway is a man of my heart. An inspiration.

Tandalaya Fri, Jun 2, 2006 at 12:01 AM EST

Hate to tell you Sheryl - but you said Elliott never made a wrong song choice?? Well, Elliott was voted off 3rd because according to all three judges his own song choice for that night was NOT good for him. I believe there were several others as well. If not for poor song choice (many of which were unknown to the general public watching AI), he may well have been in the top two and maybe the winner. Sorry.

And for those of you who are saying Elliott's is the only CD you believe will sell and last - remember, you like HIS 'brand' of music as well as his voice. I like his voice very much, but the type of songs he sings (with the exception of Moody's Mood and A House is not a Home) puts some of us (me and my husband for two) to sleep.

Tandalaya Thu, Jun 1, 2006 at 11:26 PM EST

Re Beth's June 1 post:

Billboard's Pop Chart - Chris #37;
Taylor #54; Elliott #69; Katharine (lower) but in top 100/

Billboard's Adult Contemporary Chart - Taylor #27

So America loves and supports more than Chris

Beth Thu, Jun 1, 2006 at 04:17 PM EST

Chris Daughtry is already in Billboard's Top 40. None of the others broke the top 40. He also reached #11 on Itunes sales overall and #5 on the pop charts. You have your answer right now. America loves Chris!

sal Thu, Jun 1, 2006 at 05:08 AM EST

I have read the comments and i have to admit to being a DIE HARD Taylor fan, but i have LOVED Elliott for all very different reasons! I went into deep grief when he was voted off as i wanted him So much to be in the final!! It was the wrong outcome. It would have been a FANTASTIC final showdown with taylor and elliott instead of Kat who lets face it screechs a lot. Elliott has a beautiful voice and a beautiful soul! we cant wait to get his music here in the UK! Go eliott you have made us proud!!!

justin Wed, May 31, 2006 at 03:40 PM EST

My neighbor told me that she heard Simon say on TV that Elliott's album will be out by the end of the year. I think he should release it in January after all the major fall releases and Xmas CDs are done. It worked for John Legend and would be just in time for Valentine's. With the right people, producers, and lyrics he can become the male Mariah Carey. I believe he can take on r&b, jazz, blues, gospel, hip-hop, rap, a little country and make it all pop. Remember, it's all about the voice.

Jorj Wed, May 31, 2006 at 09:53 AM EST

Elliott!!! Elliott!!! Elliott!!!
He's got such a fantastic voice, passionate and soulful! Looking back at his performances with Mary J and with the song "a House is not a home" proved only one thing, he will make it in the business.
I am waiting for his own CD and will be buying one as soon as it hits the stand.
Please, please, please, please...come out with your own CD soooooonnnnnnnnn!!!!!!

Yvonnec Tue, May 30, 2006 at 11:29 PM EST

OH MY GOD, THEY DID IT , THEY HAVE REALLY DID IT. ELLIOTT YAMIN FANS HAVE GONE AND ELVISIZE HIM. HE IS OFFICIALLY THE NEXT ELVIS PRESLEY. WHAT A DARN SHAME.
HE COULD HAVE BEEN THE NEXT "NEW AMBASSADOR OF SOUL MUSIC". HOWEVER, HIS FAN BASE HAS CHOSEN TO PLACE HIM IN AN RIDICULOUS CATEGORY. THE NEW ELVIS OR WHITE CHOCOLATE. HERE'S THE FORMULA - WHITE BOY + BLACK VOICE = COMMERCIALIZE ELVIS. WHAT A SHAME. GIVE THE BOY ROOM TO GROW. ONLY TIME WILL TELL IF HE HAS THE POTENTIAL TO BE WHAT HIS FAN BASE HAS PREDICTED. LET HIM WRITE SOME SONGS, RECORD HIS OWN MUSIC AND PLEASE DONT TRY TO MAKE HIM ELVIS. ONE OF THEM IS ENOUGH!
THIS MESSAGE IS FROM "A REAL FAN" BUT A REALISTIC ONE WHO UNDERSTANDS THAT TOO MUCH FAWNING ON ELLIOTT CAN NOT BE A GOOD THING. BTW- I LOVE ELLIOTT YAMIN'S VOICE! I WANT TO SEE HIM SHINE.

Tina Tue, May 30, 2006 at 10:44 PM EST

Most Definitely Elliott! AI since season2(Clay-Rueben)was my fav, then I heard Elliott Yamin sing. GOOSEBUMPS!!! Love him. Best male vocalist of all the seasons. He has a bright future ahead of him. I can't wait for his music, his own. He will blow everyone away. I felt very proud that he outsang every other contestant on the finale. I found myself cheering him on. He is a true American Idol. He is who the kids should be looking up to. He is a great example of a human being. Bring it on Elliott, we are looking forward to it. Your true fans will not forget you, besides we are all going through Elliott withdrawal.

Deanne Tue, May 30, 2006 at 10:07 PM EST

Top Three? ELLIOTT YAMIN, ELLIOTT YAMIN, ELLIOTT YAMIN!
Nobody else in Season 5 even came close. Taylor and Katherine will sell their little "American Idol" cd's for a minute, but their success will not last past that. Hope they invest their money wisely. Elliott will record many cd's and will be a star!

Rhonalen Tue, May 30, 2006 at 04:57 PM EST

Hey, TGIPPP I can tell you are dumb because the question was who has the most commercial potential out of AI finalists, not whether they sucked or not. Go get some education before you start commenting on these blogs you dont know nothing about.

Tjgippp Tue, May 30, 2006 at 01:57 PM EST

Elliot sucked

RBlues Tue, May 30, 2006 at 12:31 PM EST

Looks-schmooks--

If our ears (and souls) didn't overpower our eyes, we would never have heard of:

Mick Jagger, Stephen Tyler, John Lennon, Bob Dylan, Steve Perry, Billy Joel, Jerry Garcia, Little Richard, Chris Martin, Barry Manilow, George Thorogood, Jerry Lee Lewis, Roger Daltry, Freddie Mercury, Phil Collins, Roy Orbison, Angus Young, Rick James, Dee Snyder, Buddy Holly, Ric Ocasek, Joe Coc*er, The Big Bopper, Ray Davies, Seal, Ozzy Osbourne, Lionel Richie, Peter Wolf, Kid Rock, Simor or Garfunkle, 2/3 of the BeeGees, Tommy Shaw, Eric Clapton, Crosby, Stills or Nash, etc., etc.

What a shame that would have been!

I NEED to hear more from Elliott and I NEED it now!

jason Tue, May 30, 2006 at 03:55 AM EST

shana told us she is not biased, but from her review, i only see a woman trying to dismiss elliott with her 'imaginary' words!let´s look at her review!

"Elliott has a great voice, but not much "flare." "

i have a question, who decide which one has a great voice, and who decide he or she has "flare" voice? you?!it´s WE-elliott fans voted him to top3, not you!

"It's not about his looks (although he is certainly no Brad Pitt). Instead, it's about that "je ne sais quois" that Elliott just doesn't have."

so it´s still about looks!

"People tend to forget that there is such a thing as "the idol bubble." Success on American Idol does not translate to success in the mainstream markets."

you should tell this to AI winner and runner-up too.

"For instance, much of Elliott's eventual popularity on American Idol came from the fact that he was a huge underdog for much of the season. People knew him as the half-deaf guy with diabetes until he really proved himself to be a serious contender when he sang "A Song for You." "

appantly you are not "unbiased" as you mentioned before, i wanna say, you have forgotten the most important thing, elliott´s voice, well, you think it´s not "flare",most elliott fans like him from his redition of MMFL, and you can see elliott proved himself the best vocal of this competiton. he did not get many pimps as other got, he doesn´t have the looks as you mentioned "je ne sais quois", all he has is his voice. yes, he is 90% deaf in one ear and has diabetes! but do you think that really important to elliott fans? umm, strange, elliott almost got zero promotion by AI, but you do know he is halfdeaf or something! there are millions of people got cancer or other diseaz, do we need show our "sympathy" to them??

"In the mainstream markets, no one cares about little gimmicks or backstories. "

i think you are talking about taylor and katharing, right? you just mentioned elliott doesn´t have "je ne sais quois", now you seriously talking about the music bussiness dosen´t believe those gimmicks and whatever! what a twist!

"It's all about what an artist brings to the table. Elliott has a good voice, but unless he proves he has something else up his sleeve, he won't fare more than 250,000 on his first (and probably only) album. "

he already proves himself the best vocal in this competition and before he got eliminated, he was on Hot AC charts with his MMFL and ASFY, people do know how great he is and how totally wrong this time! can i tell you something, he was on a christian album, well, it´s big planz´ album and he is backgroudn vocal in 3 songs and that album sold out in one day at cdbaby.com and we are talking about 4000 copies and there are quite many elliott fans download those 3 songs at itune.com or trying to buy that cd. he has bigger fanbase than you think! by the way, im really impressive by your 250,000 sales, how did you figure out? do you work for any label out there, or do you have any experience in music business? or simply, do you have sale experience?

we are the voters, not you and we do know how to vote and vote for the right person.

klf Tue, May 30, 2006 at 12:49 AM EST

For selfish reasons I wouldn't mind if Elliott only had moderate success because I would love to see him live in a small venue. I have burned a CD of all his songs, and have listened to it repeatedly. He has a lot of imperfections but has shown that he has the ability to improve by leaps and bounds. His 'likability' factor is off the chart, as evidenced by his cross-generational and cross-cultural and obvious extreme fan devotion. This could translate to big sales.

Ultimately though it depends on his first album, will it hit the mark with all of those varied people that like him and with the people that don't know him? The producers have a huge challenge with Elliott as the others have fairly focused targets musically.

Given that, I think Elliott has the most underestimated fanbase of all of them since a huge portion of his fans are baby boomers like me, people unlikely to place 200-300 votes at a time. However, he does have a strong teenage girl following who we all know hold all the power on American Idol and in pop record sales, but it's not as big as Katharine's or Chris's - given that he still gave them a run for their money.

BTW, the song that's sounds best to me in car is "Heaven".

Shana Mon, May 29, 2006 at 10:58 PM EST

I watched American Idol every week, and never voted, so i feel my opinion is pretty unbiased. I never had a favorite, i just watched for entertainment value.

I think most of the people who are posting here are the die-hard Elliott fans who happened to stumble across and article they like. I read whattheheck and Becca's pieces too and although they have been ridiculed for their opinions from Elliott fans, they are right in many, many aspects.

Elliott has a great voice, but not much "flare." It's not about his looks (although he is certainly no Brad Pitt). Instead, it's about that "je ne sais quois" that Elliott just doesn't have. People tend to forget that there is such a thing as "the idol bubble." Success on American Idol does not translate to success in the mainstream markets.

For instance, much of Elliott's eventual popularity on American Idol came from the fact that he was a huge underdog for much of the season. People knew him as the half-deaf guy with diabetes until he really proved himself to be a serious contender when he sang "A Song for You."

In the mainstream markets, no one cares about little gimmicks or backstories. It's all about what an artist brings to the table. Elliott has a good voice, but unless he proves he has something else up his sleeve, he won't fare more than 250,000 on his first (and probably only) album.

Justine Mon, May 29, 2006 at 08:51 PM EST

Elliott is AMAZING.

Cant wait to see what his future holds. :)

Madeleine Mon, May 29, 2006 at 05:56 PM EST

I think Becca said that Elliot won't get far because of his looks, well tell that to Tony Bennett, he looked really bad when he first came out, Ruben Studdard won, and is doing well with half the voice that Elliot has, he's good looking? How about Bob Dylan, he always looked like Hell, talent is talent, I also think Elliot is pretty cute, pretty is as pretty does, you can't record a face. Taylor will tramp all over the south, his fan base, and give everyone a great time I'm sure, but will he sell records? I don't think so, he really isn't very good and he , in my opinion, is not good looking either. Ace was good looking but he didn't win, so was Chris, whats looks got to do with a good voice? how shallw are we that we base a singing contest on looks and not talent. I see people raving about Elliot all over the internet, whats more, he is a global favorite, most of them said they would have voted for Elliot if they could, I live in the midwest, My daughters live in NY, none of us could get through to vote no matter how hard we tried, the south voted a hundred times each with no problems that I've heard of, so you can add that to the mix.

g Mon, May 29, 2006 at 12:09 PM EST

elliott is such a talented singer! he should have been the am idol..i am really disappointed with other's comment regarding his looks..urgh//he is not ugly, far from it..he is one genuine guya nd i know he will do more than good once his cd is out..i love to buy his cd!!

Rexy Mon, May 29, 2006 at 09:19 AM EST

I think, whatheheck and Becca let their personal preferences cloud their minds. Elliott is the best singer of all 3. Elliott is not vying to be a leading man in a movie, but wait even short and not so-goodlooking moviestars get to be leading lady and or leading man. If we are talking about entertainment, were not talking about leading a sexsual or beauty pageant kinda entertainment, were talking about singing and or acting. If you have great vocals or great acting ability, hats all the capital you need to succeed. Looks are irrelevant. So Elliott will outsell those 3 you are talking about! Comprende?

aCriticToCritics Mon, May 29, 2006 at 08:44 AM EST

Linda, you are definitely dumber than anybody who posted their opinion. Your speech was too long and irrelevant. To sum up, your believe that the market of your parents' generation (which includes the entire 30s and above generation) is an inferior market than your generation? Ha ha! By calling a contestant a hobbit & unattractive doesn't convice people of your point. Both good voice & stage presence can be enhanced, however, good voice is a gift while stage presence can be learned. Furthermore, David Foster did compliment Katharine. He did the same to all the other contestants.

debbie england Mon, May 29, 2006 at 04:55 AM EST

so agree with the reviewer, elliott rocks, to all the critisisers of elliott, take it from me this guy is sexy as hell and gorgeous and is not boring far from it. i have never been more intrested in someone in my life. to any record producers out there get him in the studio NOW the women of the world want elliott!

Becca Mon, May 29, 2006 at 12:48 AM EST

Thank you Whattheheck for writing it like it is! Elliott does have a great voice, and I can appreciate that there are a lot of people out there, and I think most of them have posted on this board, that are looking forward to buying his album. But honestly in a world where looks, stage presence, and charisma are primary components to success, Elliott will be fighting an uphill battle. I do hope he succeeds, because in addition to a great voice he seems like a genuinely nice person, but with the entertainment industry being what it is, I definitely see Taylor, Chris, and Katharine being this season's most successful idols. And Slezak, I think you are letting our personal preferences cloud our professional objectivity.

jason Sun, May 28, 2006 at 12:29 PM EST

elliott is the real american idol
and he is this year´s american role model.

John Sun, May 28, 2006 at 06:38 AM EST

Elliott, without question, is the real winner of AI5. I truthfully think we will be hearing his voice for many years to come. Thirty years from now he will be the "Dionne Warrick" of AI35. I'm sure there is some aspiring (about to breakthrough) songwriter you just can't wait to latch on to Elliott the way Bachrach latched on to Dionne.

I knew I was an Elliott fan the night when it came to Mandissa and Elliott. I loved Mandissa, but I was praying that she would go home when it came down to the two.

EisGold Sun, May 28, 2006 at 02:29 AM EST

It's amazing that there are STILL people that have angst about Elliott's looks. What the hell does looks have to do with popping a CD in your box and chillin' to some smooth groves? When listening to the other Idols, it's one and done, with Elliott I listen to his songs over and over. That's what predicts market potential.

ellen Sun, May 28, 2006 at 01:11 AM EST

Elliott is just the best!!!

Athena610 Sun, May 28, 2006 at 12:19 AM EST

Elliott Yamin will certainly outshine all of this year's contestants. His vocals are incredibly strong and without television showing the gimmicks and beauty of the first two even their fans will realize it was their stage presence that had them hyped up not their vocals.

I personally am waiting for Elliott's first CD to be released and unlike a couple of the posters above I won't be buying 100 to make him go platinum. He will go platinum with each of his fans just buying one.

Jackie Sat, May 27, 2006 at 11:49 PM EST

Elliot is fabulous and will go far.
I see him outshining Taylor (longterm) and Katherine (short and long term) with he and Chris the ones that really come out on top in sales.
I think Mandisa will surprise people and do well too.
I LOVE "A Song For You" and wish it had been released on the AI5 CD. I also LOVE "I Believe To My Soul".
Both are just out of this world great.
I can't wait to buy his CD.

elliottiscute Sat, May 27, 2006 at 08:35 PM EST

Hey Whatheheck, yeah man what the heck are you talking about Elliott being unattractive! He is a beautiful person and thats all that matters and secondly he has a beautiful, velvety voice unmatched by the top 2 on AI. Elliott was never their favorite because the AI machine were just as shallow and hollow like you and tht is why he wasnt getting much publicity or press coverage. He got to where he is with just his vocal talent. I have news for you, Prince is 4"11 and he is more popular than any tall a@#$%# singer I know on this planet, Michael J. Fox is 5"3 Im taller than he is that didnt stop him from doing what he loves best and that is acting. Elliott loves to sing and I say you better just leave our Man alone if you havent got nothing nice to say! And yeah, just in case you didnt know he sang back-up on Planz album and it sold 4,000 more in a span of one day when they found out that Elliott was singing as back-up. Yes, indeed, he will outsell the final 2AI. Elliott is a class singer, and thats one thing I cannot say about you, evidently you likey cheesy songs, so go away-whatheheck whatever your name is-ha ha ha Cheeseball that should be your name!

Linda Sat, May 27, 2006 at 07:28 PM EST

Many of you Elliott "bashers" would be surprised at how huge his fan base really is. All I can say is "we'll see". I for one will the first in line to buy his CD.

whatheheck Sat, May 27, 2006 at 06:38 PM EST

Slezak,
You've out-dumbed yourself this time! Seriously, how are you an entertainment journalist, when, based on many things you've written about American Idol, you're completely blind to the way the industry works!!

Elliott has a fabulous voice, absolutely. But at the end of the day, he's still a 5'4 hobbit with little charisma and hardly any stage presence. In the music biz, a good voice comes secondary to everything else. And because Elliott doesn't even HAVE anything else, he's not going to outsell ANYONE else. Well, I mean, I guess my mother or father would buy his cd...but they're in their seventies. So maybe Elliott will be big with the geriatrics...?

Chris, Taylor, and Katharine will undoubtedly enjoy the most post-American Idol success. The buzz around Chris has been huge since his elimination and if he releases a decent enough album, he should do fine.

Taylor might have a bit of difficulty getting radio play since he doesn't fit into a specific format (a view reiterated by the associate editor of Rolling Stone), but ultimately, he will sell albums. His uniqueness will also increase his appeal, generate interest, and result in good numbers.

As for Katharine McPhee....Slezak, seriously, come on! I mean, YOU may not personally enjoy the girl, but I thought Journalism 101 was all about learning to write UNBIASED articles. If you put aside your personal preferences, you'd realize that Kat's potential extends FAR beyond the recording industry. The buzz around her is HUGE right now. In fact, she has received as much media attention as Taylor-if not more- since the finale of American Idol. The coverage of Taylor seems to stop at the fact that he is the winner of American Idol. The coverage of Katharine, however, extends far beyond her tenure on Idol.

David Foster has expressed interest in working with her. So has Andrea Bocelli. Tommy Motola said, "she really scored big with me" and Clive Davis has made it beyond clear that he is looking forward to getting her in a recording studio. Additionally, there are new reports that Spielberg wants a meeting with her. Whether or not anything materializes from that is irrelevant, to be frank. However, Katharine has a definite future on the screen if that happens to be something she is interested in pursuing. Additionally, there are reports that Katharine will be pairing up with Diane Warren to write songs for her first album. That's a pretty big deal.

In what world would Elliott Yamin- a boring, unattractive, unremarkable guy with a great voice- outsell Katharine McPhee- a charismatic, effervescent, beautiful girl with a good voice? Seriously, Slezak, come back down to earth.

sonya Sat, May 27, 2006 at 05:46 PM EST

Elliott Yamin is a true inspiration and ideal to us all! He needs to make a CD fast! I, too, have E-train withdrawal. Best vocal I've heard in a long time! Can't wait to hear him on tour!

JamesT Sat, May 27, 2006 at 02:30 PM EST

and that should read STAR !!

JamesT Sat, May 27, 2006 at 02:29 PM EST

Watching the show this week made me realise what a stat Elliott Yamin has become, he was not in the final but he absolutely owned the finale. Go Elliott !

Dilondon Sat, May 27, 2006 at 02:27 PM EST

It has been amazing watching the Elliott evolution! I know this guy is going to be the biggest star American Idol has ever produced, I hope it's sooner rather than later because I already have withdrawal symptoms.

edouard sefard Sat, May 27, 2006 at 12:22 PM EST

re Ed's comments above: Ed didn't mention that the so-called self-proclaimed Hollywood "Gay Mafia" speaks only for the most superficial, ignorant and sex-and-crack obsessed and ultra narrow-minded but highly visible slice of that world. You give all gay men a bad rap Ed, so you just stay in gay porno-land with your fake D&G where you belong, and while you're picking up your crack pipe and hitting the pause button on your second-hand vcr, we unashamed normal folks (gay and straight) will be buying Elliot's CD's and cheering the success he earns through his talent. Period.

Gale Sat, May 27, 2006 at 10:44 AM EST

Chris was my pick from the get go, but Elliot is awesome as well. If Chris had had the charisma and stage appearance the Taylor has he would have blown them away.I predict Chris as well as Elliuot will have a great music career! You go guys!

Carol Diehl Sat, May 27, 2006 at 08:58 AM EST

It's amazing how our boy Elliot has evolved right before our eyes, and in just a few months time. I disagree with those who say he will be forgotten in a year, this guy has something , he just keeps getting better

Carol Sat, May 27, 2006 at 08:55 AM EST

I love all of the positive feedback about our boy Elliot
It's like we watched him evolve over just a few months time. Like I said before he just keeps getting better

willow Sat, May 27, 2006 at 08:51 AM EST

ed Sat, May 27, 2006 at 12:50 AM EST

The most talented person I have seen in a long time. I will surely buy his music. The guy has talent and he is already getting comfortable performing. He seemed very relaxed and his personality really came out in the finaly.

virginia Fri, May 26, 2006 at 11:20 PM EST

Elliott Yamin will be a World Idol!!!!!

Jay Fri, May 26, 2006 at 10:16 PM EST

I truley know what I like about Elliott. He has made me enjoy music again. His voice is magical. He will be a top seller.

Aida Fri, May 26, 2006 at 09:53 PM EST

I just want to say I am glad so many people feel the same about Elliott that I do. Not only was his singing fabulous but the essence of his person came right through the satelite. Each person who wrote in or voted was touched by Elliott in a way that made us each feel a change for ourselves through his way of presenting his music. He has so much to share inside of himself that we all will benefit from. Claudette, thank you for the grace of your child in our lives. Blessed Be

Faeire Fri, May 26, 2006 at 09:03 PM EST

Thank you Elliott...for making me want to sing and dance again. Most of all..thank you for making me love all kinds of music again. You've given me so much already. I can't wait to buy your CD!!!

Kehaulani Skye Fri, May 26, 2006 at 09:02 PM EST

E-TRAIN!!!!!! thank you for seeing what the rest of the media fails to see(or doesn't care to admit!)

Dana Fri, May 26, 2006 at 08:44 PM EST

Elliott sings from his soul with a unique sound that makes the ear just long to be closer to him, a sign of great success to come. He sings jazz/R&B riffs with an amazing natural ease, and women from 15-70 on the fan sites report that their hearts are melting on the sidewalks. PRODUCERS:ARE YOU LISTENING? We need an Elliott CD asap.

atlantiskat Fri, May 26, 2006 at 07:46 PM EST

Elliott has the sexiest most soulful voice in years. Please get this guy a contract. I can not live without more of him. He is my only idol.

Sue Fri, May 26, 2006 at 07:35 PM EST

Elliot, Elliot, Elliot. He is EXACTLY what an American Idol should be! I think America should have been able to 'write in' their choice of AI and I think Elliot would have won. Kat and Taylor were dismal the show before the final and it just made Elliot stand out more. Even people at the office who had previously chosen Taylor said the same. He has a wonderful voice that will endure AND, listen up America, he actually is a good person and one that children should get to know and want to emulate. I will buy ANYTHING Elliot!!

franck Fri, May 26, 2006 at 07:11 PM EST

I am 48 and grew up with classical music, the Beatles, braodway and jazz. My first concert was the Everly Brothers in 1962, when I was 4 years old. My parents listened to big band and frank sinatra. I was passionate about all types of music. I dropped out of the music contempoarry music scene 20 years ago --- just got too busy with my medical career. I love Elliott's taste in music so I just bought my first Usher and Alicia Keys CD. I am unearthing my David Brubeck LPs and oteh favorites. This boy Elliott has resurrected my love of music and I will definitely follow his music career. He is the most talented idol of all time. I just downloaded his Moody's Mood For Love from I tunes and I must have listened to it 20 times already! Thank God for Elliott!

AL Fri, May 26, 2006 at 04:32 PM EST

The answer as to who will sell and be a success: TWO WORDS YAMIN FOREVER!!!!

RBlues Fri, May 26, 2006 at 04:06 PM EST

Thank you Yvonne! Just ordered the CD, and it will definitely tide me over for now.

nunnya Fri, May 26, 2006 at 03:54 PM EST

Elliot won my vote during Queen week. I haven't been able to stop singing If I Can Dream from Elvis week and I voted like it was my job to get him into the Finals. During the finale I found myself admiring how adorable he looked. I can't wait to see what he does next. I hope he sells millions of records and buys his mom a big ol house!

Sheryl Fri, May 26, 2006 at 03:40 PM EST

Elliott is absolutely real and a fantastic talent.
I have always watched AI and can compare from year to yr.
This year, I was entranced with Elliott from the start
Never a wrong step with song choice, his character or his voice
Looking forward to many yrs of beautiful music

Yvonne Fri, May 26, 2006 at 03:27 PM EST

There is a 39 cut CD on eBay. Of course, it's a conglomeration of things from AI, but it's something! Just go to eBay and search under "Elliott Yamin".

trudi Fri, May 26, 2006 at 03:09 PM EST

Is his Elliott's CD out yet?
No?
Too bad, because I would be buying it off of Amazon this very minute.

jv Fri, May 26, 2006 at 02:53 PM EST

all i can say jamal, is thank god he's no clay aiken

miss bunny Fri, May 26, 2006 at 02:51 PM EST

The American Idol finale was disappointing. I watched two substandard compeititors perform. The best of all-- Elliott Yamin--should have been on the podium. His vocals are nothing short of a masterpeiece. None of the contestants could sing Moodys Mood for Love and his live rendition of House is not a Home sent chills down the spines of all those who love good music. I will be first in line to buy his CD's. He will outsell all the others worldwide...just wait and see......as long as AI doesnt make him wait forever to record.....I for one Believe to My Soul that ...I will remember your name..ITS ELLIOTT YAMIN.

Yvonne Fri, May 26, 2006 at 02:36 PM EST

Hey Princess, you hit the nail on the head. "Boomers" (the largest/wealthiest segment of the market) will support Elliott. We did grow up with the great crooners. Just when I thought they'd all fanished, low and behold her comes Elliott. My music taste runs from Mozart to Pink Floyd, but in my opinion there is nothing like a guy who can go out there and sing his heart out. That's what Elliot does and that's what people will want to hear.

Princess Fri, May 26, 2006 at 02:18 PM EST

I agree with your prediction-Elliott will soar higher than everyone else when all is said and done. He has a legendary voice- so velvety - so soothing and pierces right through your heart. I believe that he has a lot of babyboomers fan, and they like to listen to good music like the legends they've listen to in their youth. Most of these boomers have money to burn. I for one will spend all kinds of monies to buy all his cds when it comes out-then buy some more for my family for christmas gifts and I have at least 30 relatives who love the kinda music Elliott sings. I tell ya the kid is just warming up!

WRC Fri, May 26, 2006 at 02:18 PM EST

Dude, what is with you?

The question posed was, "Who do YOU think will be the top sellers from season 5?" Post an answer to the question and/or leave us alone.

Eric Fri, May 26, 2006 at 02:06 PM EST

That's fine and good, but he's riding the AI wave right now. And they're not really "his" singles. The true test will be if he can chart when he's doing it on his own promoting his own album of original material.

WRC Fri, May 26, 2006 at 02:00 PM EST

TWO of Elliott's singles are on the top 10 (adult contemporary) list! Not bad for third place.

Eric Fri, May 26, 2006 at 01:57 PM EST

What I meant about Slezak and the frenzy is about record sales. You're all Elliot fans. A lot of people aren't. And a lot of people aren't. He has an uphill road. He probably won't have a CD out for at least a year maybe two. This fervor will have worn off by then and him selling a lot of records won't be such a sure thing. Especially if he doesn't work on his charisma and stage presence. He only connects with a song if Donny Hathaway performed it origninally.

RBlues Fri, May 26, 2006 at 01:51 PM EST

To Eric:

Slezak didn't drive "US" into a frenzy --- ELLIOTT DID!

Yvonne Fri, May 26, 2006 at 01:50 PM EST

Elliott has struck a cord with me! I'm 58 and up until this year never watched American Idol. I became an Elliott fan early on in the competition. Don't know what it is, but this boy can make me weepy when he sings. He will do well because the market is not saturated with similiar artists. Chris is great, but there's plently like him out there. Same with Katherine (who doesn't connect with her songs)McPhee. Taylor is likeable and he's an entertainer, so he'll do fine. Can't wait to go along for a ride on the "E-train" as his career takes off!

Eric Fri, May 26, 2006 at 01:43 PM EST

Wow. That's all I can really say. It looks like everyone has a lot of confidence in Elliot. I wish I did. Because Elliot's a nice guy with a nice mom who has a decent voice when he doesn't overdo the vibrato. But will anyone remember him when he gets released from his Idol contract? Because Tamyra Gray was awesome too and everyone said they were going to buy her CD and not a lot of people did, which is a shame because it was good. I'm afraid the same will happen to Elliot. Now, by picking Elliot to outshine all 12 of this year's Idols Slezak has driven all you Yaminiacs into a frenzy, but be realistic. When fall comes all eyes are going to be on Kat and Taylor once again to see if it's going to be a Ruben/Clay situation or a Fantasia/Diana Degarmo situation. Sorry.

KiWi Fri, May 26, 2006 at 01:42 PM EST

Elliott Yamin makes my inner-13 yr old go 'SQUEEEEEEEEEEEeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!'

onewithE Fri, May 26, 2006 at 12:51 PM EST

PHENOM ALERT! Mark my words, Elliott will eventually dwarf Kelly and Clay in popularity and record sales.

linda Fri, May 26, 2006 at 12:51 PM EST

Elliott. Elliott. Elliott. I'm another one of those grey-haired groupies who will use all that "disposable income" I have to buy his cd's, go to his concerts and get goose-bumps when I hear him sing! I'm on the E-Train for a long time.

RM Fri, May 26, 2006 at 12:01 PM EST

Michael Slezak, a bouqet of love to you for this! As my grandmother was fond of saying, "From Your Lips, To G-d's Ears!"

This season, I was so completely enchanted by Elliott that his departure left me quite literally in tears. For hours. Then, following his good example, I decided to just keep the faith that all would work out for him and that his unmistakable talent could not fail to find a platform. Your article, and these other posts, have given me greater confidence that It Will Be So. Thank you so much, and thanks to all of the many fans who will make certain that Elliott is not forgotten, and that he instead becomes the recording star he was meant to be.

WRC Fri, May 26, 2006 at 11:50 AM EST

I have never purchased the American Idol Encores CD.

This year ELLIOTT compelled me to because I NEED to hear him, yes NEED.

Release this boy's tracks from American Idol on a CD now! We demand it!

RBlues Fri, May 26, 2006 at 11:46 AM EST

Seems to me like there's gonna be a good old-fashioned "dog-fight" to see who gets to buy the Elliott CD first. EVERYBODY wants to be first in line.

I hope we don't all live in the same city!

GO ELLIOTT--WE LOVE YOU!

deborah Fri, May 26, 2006 at 11:41 AM EST

Elliott is BEYOND Clay Aiken. He will be very successful. He will not be forgotten, he has just begun. As he continues to gain confidence, he will continue to blow America away with his incredible voice. I can't get enough of him already...He is incredible, handsome, and sweet! I LOVE HIM!

Rebecca Fri, May 26, 2006 at 11:40 AM EST

Hey Ron....looks does not make a person. I see by your name your are trying to get the word out what type you are. Get off your high horse and come down to reality. Personality rules over looks.

tammy Fri, May 26, 2006 at 11:35 AM EST

Well if I have to go buy 100 of Taylor cd's to help him get to platinum, I guess that's what I have to do! I will definitely buy 1 if there are any left in the stores when I get there. :) I don't do Pop and I like that blue eyed soul that he sings.

YOLI Fri, May 26, 2006 at 11:31 AM EST

Elliott doesn't need to change a thing....he is HOT HOT HOT!!! And that voice, OMG, he knocks me off my feet!!! I'l be first in line to buy his CD no matter how long it takes to get to the store!!

Carol Fri, May 26, 2006 at 11:20 AM EST

Elliott is the only AI contestant who I would buy their CD - and I've been watching the show from the beginning. Just the tone of his voice is beautiful and he sings everything from the heart. He can sing any type of music well. He has gotten better looking each week. And he's the nicest, most humble guy. What more could you ask for?

Jeffrey Fri, May 26, 2006 at 11:19 AM EST

A 59 year old woman (yes) who owns everything from Piaf to Alicia Keys, I will believe Taylor can easily go platinum if his talents/energy are correctly showcased: How about an intial CD of "Taylor Hicks Live"?

I love Chris Daughtry and will buy him if he doesn't go out-on-a-limb alt/rock. Unfortunately, he loses his base when he doesn't.

Elliott. Well, sorry, but the guy just puts me to sleep. Excellent voice, songs to read by.

kbl Fri, May 26, 2006 at 11:18 AM EST

ELLIOTT IS IN A TOTALLY DIFFERENT CLASS THAN THE OTHERS. ELLIOTT'S MUSIC IS SENSUAL, AUDITORY AMBROSIA. BLUSHING HE WILL SELL AND STAY HOT FOR A LONG TIME. BEST OF LUCK TO AN AWESOME NEW ARTIST.

Stephanie Fri, May 26, 2006 at 11:16 AM EST

Was Toni Braxtons mic on? I could not understand a word she sang? Plus what's up with Meatloaf? He did not look well and I am thinking Parkinson's?

Veronica Fri, May 26, 2006 at 11:04 AM EST

I heard Elliott's single on our local jazz radio station last night and I became a cross between a proud-mama and a giddy teenager.

I LOVE ELLIOTT and I have since the first "vote-in" portion of the competition. I voted for him like a maniac and so did my teenage daughter. Elliott is a breath of fresh air, with a God-given talent, who deserves (and will appreciate) everything good that comes from this.

I NEED AN ELLIOTT CD NOW!! PRODUCERS ARE YOU LISTENING?

Josh Fri, May 26, 2006 at 11:01 AM EST

I agree with most of the posters here, Elliot is amazing and ever since I saw him sing Moody's Mood for Love week 1 of the semifinals I was a huge fan. I'm bummed that the tour goes on forever because I cannot wait until Elliot gets into the studio to make his own CD. Keep the Elliot spirit alive and share the love!

Dee Fri, May 26, 2006 at 10:19 AM EST

I will buy anything Elliott puts out. You can get a taste of what's to come if you read the reviews on the the new American Idol cd Encores on amazon.com. Look who's the standout...Elliott. Most of the reviews are so, so but for Elliott. He blows everyone out the water.

I will also be buying Chris cd if he puts out songs like he did on Idol. I wanted a Elliott and Chris final.

I'm also not sure about Taylor going platinum. I'm a little worried about him because so many were rooting and voting for Taylor. However you ask them will they buy his cd they say no. They just want to see him dance in person. That's not going to translate to a cd. I hope Taylor's cd is hot because I want to love it.

kelli Fri, May 26, 2006 at 10:14 AM EST

I agree 100% with you! I can't wait to buy Elliott's c.d. It should have been Elliott and Taylor in the final 2!!!! I think we'll be hearing and seeing a lot more from Elliott Yamin! I too think he's a MAJOR hottie!!!!!

annie Fri, May 26, 2006 at 10:13 AM EST

Love me some Elliott!

linda Fri, May 26, 2006 at 10:03 AM EST

I love Elliot! I can't wait to purchase his CD!! His voice leaves me spellbound!! I am so addicted to Elliot!!! LOVE LOVE LOVE HIM!!!

jazzy Fri, May 26, 2006 at 10:02 AM EST

I totally agree - I think definitely Chris will go far especially after seeing him sing with LIVE on the finale. That guy was born to be a lead singer in a kicka** band! Taylor - I am impressed with all the interviews so far, last night he was on Leno and was very well spoken and professional. His priority is not to be famous just to make an amazing record. I think that's great. Elliott - well he was my fave from day 1 - he has just as much appeal as Michael Buble and can definitely see him going far...I would buy anything from him. His duet was so great with MJB and he appreciates the success. as for KAT I head Steven Spielberg has been calling - she just may be the next Julia Roberts - hopefully she doesn't forget her lines in a movie much like her singing...!

Kellie Fri, May 26, 2006 at 09:53 AM EST

I'll buy anything Elliott records. He was my favorite throughout the entire season and I was so hoping he would win. Chris and Talyor were my other 2 favorites, so I am happy that Taylor won. I'll buy his cd too.

I think Elliott will outlast them all and yes I think he is a hottie!!!

Ron B Fri, May 26, 2006 at 09:47 AM EST

Enough already, Elliot is too ugly to be anyones idol. Rotten Ron

Ed Fri, May 26, 2006 at 09:41 AM EST

Madonna rocks! Next year she'll be on AI as the suprise guest.

Ed

djm Fri, May 26, 2006 at 09:16 AM EST

I am guessing that Elliott will have a successful career - I have already purchased his song off iTunes and am waiting for more. The other one I am excited about is Paris. I am really curious what they are going to do with her - with the right material she could really be amazing. Oh, and GODDESSLU - I DID vote for Elliott - again and again and again - unfortunately there were more people that were swayed by Katherines cleavage than Elliotts amazing voice.

Tom Fri, May 26, 2006 at 08:58 AM EST

I just watched my tape of the American Idol finale. Elliott's rendition of "A House is Not a Home" was incredible, even better than Tamyra Gray's in the first season. Too bad it was an abbreviated version. I think if the competition had included a Bacharach night as in years past, Elliott just may have won. (Lisa Tucker would've stuck around a lot longer if she'd had a chance to perform "Alfie"--she was amazing too.)

Laura Fri, May 26, 2006 at 08:32 AM EST

I am a 33 yr old white middle class married mom of 2, and I am like a giddy pre-teen when it comes to Elliott. Yes, he has an unbelievable voice, but the thing about Elliott that makes him more than just an incredible voice is his soul--that man moves me. And that is what is going to make his a huge star who will span so many genres & demographics--you can't put my E in a box!
