'Idol': What should Taylor and Katharine sing?

May 19, 2006, 01:25 PM | by Michael Slezak

Categories: 'American Idol', Reality TV

142917__katharinemcphee_l Yes, it's true that this season's American Idol finalists have taken delight in spurning the song requests that all of us have been posting here at PopWatch for the last several weeks. And indeed, some wise person once said that insanity is repeating the same activity over and over again and expecting a different result. But who ever said PopWatch was a place of mental stability? In that spirit, here are my final attempts to sway Taylor Hicks and, pictured, Katharine McPhee (who are both awaiting your letter grade of their work to date) to create my ultimate Idol season finale. Won't you do the same?

Taylor: Okay, I get it -- loud and clear -- the gray-haired dude is not about to tackle ''Lady Marmalade'' (his loss). But my good friend Doni from Kentucky emailed me last week with a suggestion that's even more must-hear: Michael McDonald's "I Keep Forgettin' (Every Time You're Near).'' Trust me, Taylor, sing it, and things will never be the same again.

Katharine: All of you know I'm immune to the McPheever (symptoms of which include an occasional shrieking noise in the ears and severe ego-tosis), but I could possibly (maybe) (almost) catch it if Katharine took on Pat Benatar's ''We Belong.'' It's delicate, but not so delicate that Kat won't be able to go for the power notes (which she seems intent on doing); plus, it's got a clear, gorgeous melody. Now, sing it. SING IT!

Don't get me wrong, I think that Taylor is phenominal but when he mentioned the "Soul Patrol" I don't think that he meant "Hey! I wanna dress up as a California Raisin for the finale!" The stylist should have been dragged out onto the street and shot. When Taylor meant that he wanted to dress like "The King" he did not mean "King Friday", Ok? And Kat's dress was so friggin tight that she looked like a tube of "Crest". I liked the pleats on the bottom though.

So let's talk about the songs. Poor kitty Kat lossed her meow. Instead of giving her a bowl of milk, I wanted to throw a shoe! See ya on Broadway. While Taylor's song sounded a little like "Amazed" by Lonestar, the song is going to be played everytime CNN shows a video of soilders in Iraq. It is a song that for now is very marketable. Yes Taylor, you made us proud.

gale Wed, May 24, 2006 at 01:15 PM EST

The song Katherine performed last night, "My Destiny", was a horrible song! It's insipid sh*t and put her at a distinct disavantage. I gather she didn't have much say about it, but had to take the song as one of her own. Doesn't anyone else agree about the sub-par quality of that song? Yuk!

Melanie Mon, May 22, 2006 at 10:37 PM EST

I definitely think Taylor should do a Beatles song, he did so well with "Something" a few weeks back. Whatever song Katherine sings, someone just needs to let her know that sometimes singing softly can be just as emotionally powerful as blasting the big notes.

maraplum Mon, May 22, 2006 at 06:25 PM EST

Taylor: "Golden Slumbers", by the Beatles
Kat: "Jealous of the Moon", by Nickel Creek

Chardylove Mon, May 22, 2006 at 04:17 PM EST

Taylor: Al Green's "Tired of Being Alone"
Kat: The Pretender's "Ill Stand By You"

jose Mon, May 22, 2006 at 03:10 PM EST

i think ktharine is going to sing something like BEAUTIFUL by christina, but she should sing: MARIAH CAREY'S STAY THE NIGHT..
Taylor should sing: CANDY SHOP, BY FIFTY CENT! IMAGINE THAT

Rose Mon, May 22, 2006 at 02:50 PM EST

Two picks each:
Taylor - She Came In Through The Bathroom Window, Into The Mystic
Katherine - Different Drum, Blue Bayou

WML Mon, May 22, 2006 at 01:41 PM EST

Is it just me or does anyone else think there is some sort of "Manchurian Candidate" conspiracy going on with Taylor? After he sings and Ryan talks to him to give out the numbers, Taylor always says "Soul Patrol" at least once or twice. I think that his voice saying those words triggers some sort of chips in people's brains that make them want to vote for him. How else to explain how a Ray Charles/Joe Cocker/Michael McDonald love child with no conceivable talent will win this freakin' thing? I know that at least this year I won't be spending any money on an Idol winner's CD (actually make that 2 years in a row, what with Carrie "I have no personality but I want to sell you Skechers shoes" Underwood and her CD of Dixie Chicks reject songs). Oh, well...maybe next year.

Tully Mon, May 22, 2006 at 01:25 PM EST

Obviously, Micheal Sk doesn't like Katharine but it isn't totally her fault. The producers like her, that's the reason why she's survived the contest this far. Kat will win. My song choice for Kat: Don't Make My Brown Eyes Blue (so hopefully she won't shriek); for Taylor: Georgia On My Mind (so hopefully he won't prance around the stage). How I miss Elliott!!!

Ab Mon, May 22, 2006 at 01:25 PM EST

Go Taylor!!!!!

Aaron Mon, May 22, 2006 at 01:24 PM EST

Katharine needs to sing a song that balances jazzy soul and singer-songwritery lyrical conviction. My vote's for "Poetry Man" by Phoebe Snow. Taylor seems to do especially well when he sings songs that hit really deep emotions ("Levon", "In the Ghetto", and "Something") so my vote goes to Bob Seger's "You'll Accomp'ny Me," perhaps the sweetest, most genuine rock song ever written to someone.

Rich Mon, May 22, 2006 at 01:06 PM EST

THE song that Taylor should sing is SOUL MAN by Sam and Dave from the movie "Blues Brothers".

Tracey Mon, May 22, 2006 at 12:55 PM EST

Since Taylor brings Michael McDonald to mind, Taylor should not sing Michael. He should save that for an album. I think he should sing something funky, and I would suggest Chaka Khan's "Ain't Nobody".

As for Katherine, I don't care, however, it should be something that doesn't make her screech.

Alicia Mon, May 22, 2006 at 12:41 PM EST

I'd love to hear Joe Cocker's "A little help from my friends". I think Taylor could belt that out

WRC Mon, May 22, 2006 at 12:38 PM EST

Taylor -- "It's a Miracle"

McPhony -- "Go Away, Little Girl"

Ashley Mon, May 22, 2006 at 12:33 PM EST

Taylor - Anything by Michael McDonald.
Katharine - Anthing by Linda Ronstadt...please! Or possibly "Don't you make my brown eyes blue" by Crystal Gayle.

GO KAT!

liz Mon, May 22, 2006 at 12:25 PM EST

Katharine will sing a new song called "My Destiny" on finale night. The song was written by a Brit, a Swede and a Norwegian.

As for the other songs, they should sing:

Taylor: Goodbye Yellow Brick Road by Elton John
Katharine: Angels (Not the screechy and awful Jessica Simpson version, but the beautiful Robbie Williams version.)

Anonymous Mon, May 22, 2006 at 11:56 AM EST

Taylor--I agree with the "Moondance" suggestion.

Kat-Don't care, snack break time.

Amanda Mon, May 22, 2006 at 11:48 AM EST

They sing?

Kevin Mon, May 22, 2006 at 11:29 AM EST

Taylor:
"Ants Marching" - Dave Matthews Band
"I'll Have To Say I Love You In A Song" - Jim Croce

Katharine:
"Walking On Sunshine" - Katrina & the Waves
"I Love You Always Forever" - Donna Lewis

ps in seattle Mon, May 22, 2006 at 11:27 AM EST

Taylor: Georgia.
Kat: Uh, just not interested.

Tino Mon, May 22, 2006 at 11:05 AM EST

Besides the awful songs the show will make them sing, here are my picks:
1. Kat - Wurlitzer Prize (by Waylon Jennings)

2. Taylor - Roll Me Away (by Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band)

Reda Mon, May 22, 2006 at 10:59 AM EST

Three comments:
1. Nobody should sing "Lady Marmalade" ever, ever again.

2. Taylor should sing "Ma Na, Ma Na, Doo, doo, doo doo doo" by the Muppets.

3. Here's my quick impersonation on an Elliot song: "Booooooooooooooorrrrrrrrrrrrrrriiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnngggggggg."

Sugarpie Mon, May 22, 2006 at 10:39 AM EST

Taylor should sing - "Love's been rough on me" - Etta James

Katherine should sing - "You're beautiful" - James Blunt

Rick Mon, May 22, 2006 at 09:46 AM EST

Taylor: You've Made Me So Very Happy - Blood, Sweat, and Tears
Kat: I Can't Make You Love Me - Bonnie Raitt

spud Mon, May 22, 2006 at 07:43 AM EST

Taylor should sing something from the Rob Zombie catalog, probably "Dragular" but he should sing in the manner of a 12-year old girl.

Hopefully, that would send his barroom karaoke shtick packing!

Karo Mon, May 22, 2006 at 07:04 AM EST

Taylor should either sing "Never Been to Spain" (I've been saying this since I first heard him) or "Givin it up for your love" by Delbert McClinton. Either of those would so rock with his voice! And for Katherine I'd choose "Dog and Butterfly" by Heart.

PSC Mon, May 22, 2006 at 06:54 AM EST

Coran I agree; I am tired of Slezak's trite and pointless comments against Katharine. His criticism is anything but constructive. We got it! He does not like Katharine. But of the two, she is the better vocalist and has taken more chances than all the idols this season

Aaron Mon, May 22, 2006 at 01:48 AM EST

Taylor should sing GEORGIA (on my mind).
Kat should sing SHOW ME THE WAY TO GO HOME.

RobThrobs Sun, May 21, 2006 at 11:09 PM EST

taylor: come to my window by melissa etheridge
katherine: unbreak my heart (toni braxton) - which, btw, i would have gargled GLASS to hear mandisa sing

teepee Sun, May 21, 2006 at 09:27 PM EST

Tayolr should sing "Hell and High Water" or anything else sang by T.Graham Brown.

Me-me Sun, May 21, 2006 at 08:32 PM EST

Katherine should sing "Goodbye to You" by Scandal--because hopefully it would be appropriate! She is just an average vocalist, with a huge ego and a bratty attitude. Taylor could sing anything he wants and it will sound great. He is such a classy classy fellow, and he handles constructive criticism graciously. Katherine just gets angry, bratty, makes excuses, and backtalks the judges.

Starfish Sun, May 21, 2006 at 06:35 PM EST

I wanted Elliot to do "Have a Little Faith in Me" or something else by John Hiatt, but I think Taylor would do that one exceptionally well too. I am all for Taylor now. Glad someone else brought this song up besides me.

Smarty Pants Sun, May 21, 2006 at 05:55 PM EST

Taylor should sing "New York State of Mind" by Billy Joel.

Katharine should sing "Suzanne" by Leonard Cohen.

sowhatnow Sun, May 21, 2006 at 08:27 AM EST

DJM has it right! John Hiatt is perfect for Taylor. In fact when I heard "have a little faith in me" a few weeks ago I thought that it was perfect for him. He could do any John Hiatt song and it should be greagt. I hope he does not choose to imitate Michael McDonald.

dap Sun, May 21, 2006 at 04:24 AM EST

These are the two most generic dare I say weakest finalists out of all the Idol seasons. I'm not watching, I'll probably get around to reading the recap here after the event.

Gwen Sat, May 20, 2006 at 10:59 PM EST

On second though, Kat should sing "I Have Nothing" since the judges apologized.

Gwen Sat, May 20, 2006 at 10:57 PM EST

Although I'll give a fair recap, like I always do, I'm really pulling for Taylor to win this one. I'd love him to do anything by Michael McDonald, and perhaps "Georgia" by Ray Charles. Anything with a soul/gospel feel to it would be good as well.

Katharine's gonna screech her head off and complain about the judge's comments, so I don't care what she sings.

I'm voting Soul Patrol.

Lisa Sat, May 20, 2006 at 07:50 PM EST

Taylor should sing "Wishing you were here" to Elliot.
Kat should sing "I Know What Boys Like".
Taylor all the way.

idolfanatic Sat, May 20, 2006 at 07:14 PM EST

they are singing two songs they've already done and an original that i guess will be the first single release for the winner...cheese whiz i'm sure...anyway, for taylor: levon and try a little tenderness and for katharine: someone to watch over me and either until you come back to me or since i fell for you

Andrew Sat, May 20, 2006 at 04:17 PM EST

I agree with your whole post, Corran. I'm actually not too fond of either finalist (I'm missing Elliot and Chris right about now). I suppose Katherine is, as someone put it in another post, the "lesser of the two evils" so I will root for her, as long as she keeps her oversinging and arrogance to a minimum.

MauraES Sat, May 20, 2006 at 01:09 PM EST

Taylor should sing Good Lovin' by the Rascals -- it's a natural!

Tim Sat, May 20, 2006 at 09:12 AM EST

Taylor should perform something you would sing at a wedding. He'll need the practice.

ShaneXtopher Sat, May 20, 2006 at 08:41 AM EST

I think Kat should do the Axel F Theme from Beverly Hills Cop. It's perfect for her, as there are no vocals. :-)

jason Sat, May 20, 2006 at 08:34 AM EST

i think tammy is right. like last year, they sing their best performance, they both sing the idol single, and each sings a different original tune. however, that doesn't mean it will happen again, but i think it will. i DO think they should still do one song they've never done before. last week someone said kat was doing "the first time ever i saw your face". that would win her the whole thing, IF she did the celine dion version though. we'll see.

Josh Sat, May 20, 2006 at 05:00 AM EST

I would die if Katharine did Laura Braniggan's "Gloria", she'd be perfect for it. Taylor would redeem himself in my eyes only if he did "The Thrill is gone" by BB King

Lori Fri, May 19, 2006 at 11:04 PM EST

Kat should sing Anna Nalick's "Breathe (2AM)" or anything by Carole King.

Taylor should do "Georgia on My Mind" or how about "America" (you know...Oh beautiful, for spacious skies...)

tammy Fri, May 19, 2006 at 10:27 PM EST

I think I read they are going to sing songs they have sung in the competition before, nothing new unless it's a song specifically written for the AI5 winner.

Corran Fri, May 19, 2006 at 07:47 PM EST

Guys, remember, Slezak HATED beyond belief Carrie Underwoof from last year and even put her on the number 1 spot of most overrated contestant on Idol. Ego-tosis and screachy Mr. Slezak? That reminds me a bit of yourself actually when she shreak like crazy for Mandisa then have the ego to write her a criticizing open letter. Anyways folks, I got the McPhever but I definitely wish Chris or Elliot would have joined her in the finale. Best of luck Kat fans, PLEASE VOTE!!!

Maeve Fri, May 19, 2006 at 06:36 PM EST

I have to agree with previous posters on this one:
Blue Bayou would be excellent for Katharine.
We've Got Tonight for Taylor. I have been hoping he will sing this song all season. Perfect for him.

Nancy Fri, May 19, 2006 at 06:07 PM EST

Katherine should sing "Blue Bayou" by Roy Orbison and later covered by Linda Ronstadt. I think she'd do great with that song.
Taylor should definitely go with a Blood Sweat and Tears song, as suggested by some others here. "Spinning Wheel" would be a good choice.

Jill Fri, May 19, 2006 at 05:33 PM EST

Taylor: Honky Cat or Rocket Man by Elton John; Never Been to Spain or Joy to The World by Three Dog Night

Katherine: Ironic by Alanis Morissette; I Will Remember You by Sarah McLachlan

jon Fri, May 19, 2006 at 04:46 PM EST

I think the perfect song for Katharine would be "Shadowboxer," with that sultry, sexy vibe.

didier Fri, May 19, 2006 at 04:35 PM EST

Katharine should sing anything by Donna Summer, Kat has the same mid-range as Donna, I noticed the day she sang Someone to watch over me....
Taylor should try anything by Peter Gabriel.....

Stephanie Travitsky Fri, May 19, 2006 at 04:23 PM EST

Meier,

"Waaalk! Are you talking to me?!" lol. Yeah Pantera night. And Simon should "Run to the Hills" on Iron Maiden night.

Seriouly, Kat should sing "You're No Good"- Lyrics by Clint Ballard Jr., originally performed by Ellie Campell and later covered by Linda Rondstat. She is close to Rondstats vocal range so I think that the song would fit her.

Taylor "I keep Forgetting (Every Time Your Near) by Michael McDonald or "Minute by Minute" by M.M. and the Doobie Brothers. Doni has it right, and Taylor would execute both brilliantly. If not "New Orleans" by Gary US Bonds.

upshot Fri, May 19, 2006 at 04:07 PM EST

Taylor should sing either the song he originally auditioned with and play some harmonica as well,
and/or 'Moondance' by Van Morrison.

Katherine can sing anything she wants as long as she comes in second place.

Meier Fri, May 19, 2006 at 04:07 PM EST

I think it should be Pantera Night.

djm Fri, May 19, 2006 at 03:50 PM EST

I think Taylor should sing "Have a Little Faith in Me" by John Hiatt (I think that's his name - damn, getting old sucks!). It's a slow song, but I really think that he could do that song justice. Another I'd like to see him do is "I Am" by Jonny Lang - it's a song written by Prince and it has Taylor's name all over it.

As for Katharine, I really don't care what she sings, as long as she doesn't win this competition.

Liz Fri, May 19, 2006 at 03:39 PM EST

Why doesn’t Taylor sing a medley of his audition songs since that’s the only time I was impressed with him.

Kat should sing “My Favorite Things” ala Julie Andrews.

Bring back Elliott, it was a tie wasn’t it?!! Whaa.

Melanie's Sis Fri, May 19, 2006 at 03:39 PM EST

I would love to hear Taylor sing Warren Zevon's Werewolves of London. Katherine needs some rock and roll, like Heart's Magic Man.

dan Fri, May 19, 2006 at 03:29 PM EST

Kat should sing Angel from Sarah McLachlan or Mariah Carey's Without You.

Paulo C. Fri, May 19, 2006 at 03:28 PM EST

I have caught the McPheever, and I am so happy about it. Katharine should sing a great American standard, or, maybe, a jazzy Norah Jones (or Madeleine Peyroux) tune. That's what she does best. As for Taylor, what about Joe Cocker's "Unchain My Heart" or a Van morrison's song.

themathnerd Fri, May 19, 2006 at 03:26 PM EST

Taylor should channel Joe Cocker again and sing "With a Little Help From My Friends"

Christopher Fri, May 19, 2006 at 03:11 PM EST

For Taylor, I would recommend either Tim Buckley's "Dolphins", or "Hard To Say" by Sister Hazel. Both are in his range, and while "Dolphins" is very powerful when done right, it's a bit melancholy-- better to go with the crowd-pleasing, blues-rattling "Hard To Say". And it would be a fun song he could get his whole body behind.

I have been wanting for the longest time for someone to pull the unexpected double whammy of adding Dwight Yoakum-ish twang to the old Olivia Newton John nugget, "Make a Move on Me". Katherine could simultaneously stun critics and break hearts with that song if she felt it.

Cliff Fri, May 19, 2006 at 03:04 PM EST

Both choices are good songs. We Belong is especially pretty and perfect for Idol. Although, you're mistaken if you think Katherine is the one with the bigger ego. All that mugging, twitching, self-hugging, and yes, falling on the stage are not just Taylor being swept up in the moment. It's grand-standing, vain and distracting millions of voters from his alternating between mumbling and growling.

ps Fri, May 19, 2006 at 02:51 PM EST

Suggestion for Taylor - Bob Seeger's "We've Got Tonight"

so sad Fri, May 19, 2006 at 02:50 PM EST

I would rather hear Chris and Elliot sing a duet of "Teddy Bear's Picnic" than hear those two sing anything, but I guess their fans have better things to do on Tuesday nights than sit around dialing the phone for two hours. (Don't blame me, I'm in Canada and we can't vote).

If we must hear the gruesome twosome, Katharine is definitely the lesser of two evils when she does something soft. "We Belong" is a good pick, but she might do well with something by Norah Jones like "Come Away With Me" or "Turn Me On". If she wants to do something more bluesy she could do "Bring it on Home to Me" which Taylor might be able to pull off as well.

fred Fri, May 19, 2006 at 02:13 PM EST

isn't this the week they have to sing some cheesy song picked for them? do they really have a choice of what to sing?

Melanie Fri, May 19, 2006 at 01:50 PM EST

Taylor should totally sing "Life is a Highway" by Tom Cochrane!!
Kat should TRY and sing something by Sarah McLachlan... then we'll see if she is any good.

Ceballos Fri, May 19, 2006 at 01:49 PM EST

Not sure if Taylor has sung this or not, but my friend suggested Taylor sing "If you don't know me by now" by Harold Melvin and the Blue notes.

Katharine...hell, I don't know..."Total Eclipse of the Heart" by Bonnie Tyler...I like that cheesy song, and since i don't have McPheever, I might as well watch her sing something i enjoy (then again, I also enjoy "Against All Odds" and that turned out horribly)

jaime Fri, May 19, 2006 at 01:42 PM EST

KAT KAT KAT KAT KAT I LOVE HER!!!

stacey Fri, May 19, 2006 at 01:30 PM EST

Taylor should so win.

JAZZY Fri, May 19, 2006 at 01:18 PM EST

Kat should sing "Lady Marmalade" then she would definitely lose - she can channel Christina Aguilera yet again which she tries to do every week without success. At this point anything Taylor sings will be better. Love the Michael McDonald suggestion AND even Spinning Wheel ( that however could verge on karaoke for Simon...) GO TAYLOR!

Gretchen Weiners Fri, May 19, 2006 at 01:11 PM EST

I think Elliott should sing Ordinary People... oh wait...

Isabelle Fri, May 19, 2006 at 01:05 PM EST

Taylor: Imagine by John Lennon
Katharine: I'm a Woman by Peggy Lee

jason Fri, May 19, 2006 at 12:59 PM EST

If only Taylor WOULDNT sing... the joy I'd feel...
Katherine should sing "Dont Know Why" by Norah Jones and she'd be fabulous... Since I have to catch the McFeever now that my faves Elliott and Chris are gone, I think that'll be great for her.

kj Fri, May 19, 2006 at 12:56 PM EST

I think Taylor would sound awesome singing a Blood Sweat and Tears song like 'Spinning Wheel'. Katherine; maybe a bluesy song like Bonnie Rait's "Love me like a Man'.

Go Taylor!

ashley Fri, May 19, 2006 at 12:52 PM EST

OMG....if Taylor sang "I Keep Forgettin'", I think I may pass clean out!!!!! He is at his best, IMO, when he channels the great McDonald. Seriously, it would be the end of me!!

meme Fri, May 19, 2006 at 12:48 PM EST

Good choice for Katharine. I agree. When she sings softly (as in "Somewhere over the Rainbow", "Someone to Watch Over Me" and "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree") she sounds good, but when she belts it out (I'm still partially deaf from "Who Wants to Live Forever) she sounds like crap. She could probably do well with "Foolish Games" by Jewel or Gordon Lighfoot's "In the Early Mornin' Rain" a la Eva Cassidy.

ninjac Fri, May 19, 2006 at 12:29 PM EST

dude, you totally forgot that Taylor sang 'In the Ghetto' on Elvis night - one of your picks and did a kick'n job too.
