What's your secret iPod shame?

Apr 20, 2006, 03:15 PM | by Mickey O'Connor

Categories: Music

So I was in the shower this morning, and what should come around the iPod shuffle bend? "The Things We Do for Love" by 10cc. If that doesn't ring a bell, go to your favorite music-download service (iTunes definitely has it), listen to it, and come back. Yes, I'll wait...

Now it's already well established on these pages that I have no taste. But tell the truth -- that hook is like aural gold, no? ("Like walking in the rain and the snow when there's nowhere to go and you're feeling like a part of you is dyin'...") You totally love it, right?

An informal survey (a.k.a., poking my nose into my coworkers' shared folders) reveals that more than five of them also had 10cc in their iLineup. What are the chances? Interestingly, women seemed to favor 10cc's airy, morose "I'm Not in Love," but that's neither here nor there. Also in heavy rotation: the Beach Boys; Matthew Sweet; Ace of Base; Jack Johnson; and Dusty Springfield.

So tell us: What is your secret iPod shame? The thing you belt out in the shower (not that I was belting necessarily...) or gives you a secret smile on the bus when it comes on?

Hey, there's nothing shameful about listening to Terence Trent D'arby. He made some good music and he was pretty talented. Pretentious and arrogant, but talented.

Juvenile "Back That Thing Up"

John Mon, Apr 24, 2006 at 10:20 AM EST

I'm just embarassed that (because of that well-placed apostrophe) the first thing that comes on if I accidently hit play while I'm on the main menu screen is 'N Sync.

Maria Mon, Apr 24, 2006 at 09:28 AM EST

A few songs by Taylor Dayne, which I deleted when I went to Philadelphia to visit a friend who's in a punk band. I didn't want her judgment.

dap Mon, Apr 24, 2006 at 12:23 AM EST

Put me down for Haddaway's "What is Love" also, plus "More More More" by the Andrea True Connection, plus a song from the 70s called "Jeans On" by David Dundas, and (dare I admit it?) Get Busy by Sean Paul...the song has taken on a whole new meaning after seeing it in the Carl's Jr. milk shake ad...

Rye Sun, Apr 23, 2006 at 09:41 AM EST

"Perfect Day" by Hoku (from Legally Blonde soundtrack. And mind you - a married thirtysomething guy should not enjoy it so much.

Mrs. Logan Echolls Sun, Apr 23, 2006 at 01:57 AM EST

Dude, I HOPE you are not implying that Jack Johnson, who I want to be when I grow up, is a music library shame.

I include in my list Breathe, Londonbeat, 2Unlimited, 3T (remember Michael Jackson's nephews?), Was Not Was "Open the door, get on the floor, everyone walk the dinosaur", the music from the Super Mario Brother video game, Roxette, KWS "Babe, I love you so, and I want you to know, that I'm gonna miss your love, the minute you walk out that door, please don't go", Jefferson Starship (yeah voted the worst song, but who doesn't know it?), Ashford and Simpson "Solid! Solid as a rock!", Safire, Mathew Wilder "Ain't nothin going to break my stride, nobody's gonna hold me down, oh no, I got to keep on moving", Bobby Brown "Humping Around", this song by Bree Shard called "David Duchovny" 'cause I feel like such a stalker but it is the most original song ever...and okay I really have a thing for David Duchovny (all should check it out, really. "David Duchovny I want you to love me, to kiss and to hug me, debrief and debug me."), Bruce Willis (Respect Yourself), the 80's Chicago stuff like "Look Away", The Weather Girls "It's Raining Men" (I cannot believe that hasn't been mentioned!), 2 In A Room "Wiggle It", Stars On 54, Snap, "Thong Song", No Mercy "Where Do You Go", Mister Mister, and I could go on and on....

There versions of "I Never Promised You A Rose Garden" by Loretta Lynn, Lynn Anderson and Martina McBride.

RobThrobs Sun, Apr 23, 2006 at 12:03 AM EST

i can't believe i forgot to list my number one guilty pleasre..i had to scroll down to find it...it's Johnny, Are You Queer? by Josie Cotton, circa 1982..sample lyric: when you asked for a date, i thought that you were straight...it's the best song for closeeted, questioning, "curious" and "i'm straight up to the point i get drunk" boys...listen to it and realize that twentyfive years ago, a punk(ish) rockchick had yer number

RobThrobs Sat, Apr 22, 2006 at 11:29 PM EST

oh, and number one on my TO DOWNLOAD LIST: midnight at the oasis by maria muldaur, a freakishly-addictive song from the seventies (midnight at the oasis, send your camel to bed) i remember it from when i was a wee laddie...i LOVED it..i was camp when camp wasn't cool...and i thank everyone who posted..my TO DOWNLOAD list is now way too long..but howcome no one mentioned Point Me In The Direction Of Albuquerque by the Partridge Family?

RobThrobs Sat, Apr 22, 2006 at 11:25 PM EST

I Eat Cannibals by Toto Coelo (it's incredible, they're so edible)...The Safety Dance by Men without Hats (you can dance if you want to, leave yourself somewhere behind)...Touch Me by Samantha Fox (i want to feel your body ALL NIGHT LONG)...Nobody by Charlene (well, your NOBODY called today) and Truly Madly Deeply by Savage Garden (i want to dance with you on the mountains, i want to bathe with you in the sea)...there was a time when these were socially-acceptable songs to like, but NOW? i embarass myself by knowing all the words
oh, and does anyone remember a cheesy country song from the seventies called, i think, Rose Garden? the chorus went "i beg your PARDON, i never promised you a ROSE garden"..who did it? i CRAVE that song

Brit. Fri, Apr 21, 2006 at 06:00 PM EST

I have two Ashlee simpson songs.
What a shame.

Joe Fri, Apr 21, 2006 at 04:57 PM EST

Definetly the Spice Girls and all their solo stuff. Geri Halliwell is definetly one of the top played artist on my IPod especially her version of It's Raining Men really brings out the queen in me. I also would have to admit Mandy Moore, (shes got a great voice) very underrated, some Jessica Simpson, A little bit of Lindsay Lohan and of course I think the #1 guilty pleasure is Britney a lot of people listen to her they just don't admit it!!!!

Gizmo Fri, Apr 21, 2006 at 04:12 PM EST

Ambrosia, Bread, John Denver. Why? I'm 26. And I am sooo glad to see that "Cool Rider" from Grease 2 gets stuck in some one else's head! And does the entire sntk. of Grease 1 go w/o saying? Bertie Higgins- Key Largo. (At least I was alive when that came out.) And am I the only one who sings to songs with no lyrics like the Beverly Hills Cop theme? Billy Ocean. Bloodhound Gang- The Bad Touch. Bobby Darin's Beyond The Sea makes me want to waltz around, but I can't waltz, hence the embarrassment. One Singular Sensation from The Chorus Line. Cathy Dennis.

I also went through this list to look for songs to download and I don't know what this says, but many on here I don't find embarrassing in the least. Thanks a lot to those who do for giving me a new complex. Appreciate it!

CS Fri, Apr 21, 2006 at 03:43 PM EST

I'm glad I'm not the only one who has Haddaway's "What Is Love" -- though I'm not too ashamed. It is pretty kick ass. But one of the most shameful tunes that occasionally comes on: the theme song to "Saved by the Bell."

Imelda Fri, Apr 21, 2006 at 03:36 PM EST

Nikka Costa's "Everybody's Got Their Something" and David Bowie's "Let's Dance"

kate Fri, Apr 21, 2006 at 02:22 PM EST

Have many of the "gems" mentioned before, but here are a few more: Grease 2 - Cool Rider. (seriously love this song) Also Xanadu and Magic by Olivia Newton-John.

jon Fri, Apr 21, 2006 at 02:00 PM EST

Two words: Mandy. Moore.

Sophie Fri, Apr 21, 2006 at 01:48 PM EST

Winger - Seventeen

How can you not enjoy an old(er) man lusting after an underage girl? lol

mag Fri, Apr 21, 2006 at 01:27 PM EST

No way is Matthew Sweet a secret shame! And the Beach Boys?? Pet Sounds has been hailed as one of the best records ever made! Even Entertainment Weekly named "God Only Knows" as the BEST love song of all time!

Kat Fri, Apr 21, 2006 at 12:59 PM EST

The Monkees!!!

Maggie Fri, Apr 21, 2006 at 12:24 PM EST

Oh, and I forgot the Eden's Crush Popstars CD (I'm turning red just typing this)

Maggie Fri, Apr 21, 2006 at 12:21 PM EST

Brandy (You're a Fine Girl) - Looking Glass
Jive Talkin' - Bee Gees
Blowin' Me Up (With Your Love) - JC Chazez
The entire Girls Just Wanna Have Fun soundtrack

Sean Fri, Apr 21, 2006 at 11:09 AM EST

"Yentl" Original Motion Picture Soundtrack. I'm not a proud man.

Bonnie in T.O. Fri, Apr 21, 2006 at 10:57 AM EST

Hmm, where do I start? And let me preface this by saying that these are mixed in with a lot of great songs:

Poison, "Talk Dirty to Me"
Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam, "Head to Toe"
"Rumpshaker"
"Captain of Her Heart"
Throw in some Backstreet Boys, with a sprinkle of "Shake you down" by Gregory Issacs, and a dash of Lionel Richie and you've got the recipe for one big pile of CHEESE.

Joe Fri, Apr 21, 2006 at 10:49 AM EST

My secret IPOD shame is Hilary Duff. I know she dont have the greatest or most wonderful voice but she does have some great pop songs that make me turn red when someone catches me listeining to Wake Up or Beat Of My Heart. So you can all start throwing your papers at me!!!!

Janet Fri, Apr 21, 2006 at 10:16 AM EST

thanks Danni, now I have the Oompa Loompa song in my head....

Oompa loompa diddely do, I have another riddle for you!!!

ouch. sure you aren't on acid?

Ken M Fri, Apr 21, 2006 at 10:08 AM EST

It's a Sunshine Day by the Brady Bunch OUCH!

Danni Fri, Apr 21, 2006 at 09:25 AM EST

Here we go, and no, I'm not on acid:

Oompa Loompa song from the original Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Prince (everything) but worst one is, Rasberry Beret.
Criss Cross
Debbie Gibson
Young Black Teenagers - Tab the bottle and twist the cap
Peter Gabriel - best of cd
The Fat Boys
Vanilla Ice - Ice Ice Baby (Original version)
Milli Vanilli - Blame it on the rain
DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince
Journey

okay, now that I realize it, more then half of my 30 gigs is shameful and I will run out of room to list all my guilty pleasures. I must go now and download something a little more hip.

trapper Fri, Apr 21, 2006 at 09:12 AM EST

F*ck Her Gently, Tenacious D

ayo Fri, Apr 21, 2006 at 09:00 AM EST

i am not ashamed to say that i have jet crush on you or that there is a disturbing amount of lionel richie on my ipod. what i am a little troubled by is the fact that i scrolled down this list pen in hand so that i could download stuff later.

Andy Fri, Apr 21, 2006 at 08:55 AM EST

"Africa" by Toto.

Christina Fri, Apr 21, 2006 at 08:52 AM EST

I want to swap ipods with each and everyone of you, we'll all be on the same page! There's a reason these songs were hits at some point.

My biggest shame is probably the entire first Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch cd...

John B Fri, Apr 21, 2006 at 08:44 AM EST

Charles and Eddie - Would I Lie To You

Rin Fri, Apr 21, 2006 at 08:26 AM EST

OK...sure NO one has this I am truely a freak when it comes to this song as well as to what I thought it was about....Duran Duran "The Chauffeur". In 1989 when I was in the Navy some guy( I liked) played it for me, for years I thought the name was Blue Silver. Searched like mad to find it becuase I loved it, thought it was about these 2 kids in love, long country dirt road, hot rod, rain... blah blah blah...finally found the song can't stop playing it, but also found out it is about 2 lesbian chauffeur drivers( not that I care) it just ruined my visual. I also have an ass load of The OutField "Josie", "Nervous Alibi" and David & David, "Welcome to Boomtown"

Buffy Fri, Apr 21, 2006 at 07:40 AM EST

Dude, Matthew Sweet is so NOT a shameful iPod artist.

Lisa Fri, Apr 21, 2006 at 07:19 AM EST

Oh my God, I used to sing "The Things We Do For Love" standing in the backseat and sing it in my mom's ear on the way to nursery school (back when you didn't need to be in a car seat till you were 12) and I never knew who it was - thank you! That said, I shamefully have some of the ESPN Jock Jams albums, including Montell Jordan and "This is How We Do It"

Quentin Fri, Apr 21, 2006 at 05:02 AM EST

Jack Black & Sarah M Gellar's rMovies Kick ass" definitely get me jumping on my feet all over the (very limited) morning bus space.
Oh, and i can't get enough of the Pretty Woman soundtrack. Man, i'm a 21 yo male...
But if you want something so shameful i had to delete it, go for 2 be 3's "Partir un Jour"...

Veronica Mars Fri, Apr 21, 2006 at 04:59 AM EST

Here's my lengthy and incomplete list of songs that I roll up the car windows and sing REAL LOUD to. I am too old for many, too young for some, and others there are no excuse for. In my defense, my library is 4500+ so there are good songs too!

Bel Biv DeVoe- Do Me! (smack it up, flip it, rub it down...oh no!), 12 Gauge- Dunkie Butt, 98 Degrees- The Hardest Thing, All 4 One, Another Bad Creation-Playground, Backstreet Boys, Billy Ray Cyrus, Bullet Boys- Smooth Up In Ya, Christopher Cross, Color Me Badd, Dennis Leary- Word that sounds like bass coupled w/hole, Dino- Summer Girls, Divinyls- I Touch Myself, Donnie Osmond- Sacred Emotion, E.U.- Doin' Da Butt, George Benson, Gerardo, Henry Lee Summer- Hey Baby, Jamie Walters, Jeremy Jordan, John Stamos- Forever, Lionel Ritchie, EVERY SONG MADE BY NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK, Southern Culture On The Skids- Camel Walk, Spice Girls, Tiffany (new and old), Toto, Fraggle Rock theme Song, Ernie (from Sesame Street)- Rubber Duckie, Songs from the Care Bears Movies

Supermodel - RuPaul

Jaime Thu, Apr 20, 2006 at 08:50 PM EST

Hey, nothing shameful about the Beach Boys.

LFO's "Summer Girls", on the other hand? That's a tad shameful. But I will never, ever delete it.

Elizabeth Thu, Apr 20, 2006 at 08:37 PM EST

Where do I begin??

My entire iPod would be shameful to most... how about Richard Marx - "Take This Hear" - or Michael Bolton "How Can We Be Lovers"... with a little Nelson "I Can't Live Without Your Love and Affection" thrown in for good measure???

I love my cheeseball music... no shame here!

Don Thu, Apr 20, 2006 at 08:36 PM EST

No, but you do a mean Jefferson's theme at Karaoke night!

Annie Thu, Apr 20, 2006 at 08:34 PM EST

I don't own an ipod because I am not a big loser nerd with nothing better to do then listen to music.

Danielle Thu, Apr 20, 2006 at 07:50 PM EST

Every Spice Girls song from all three CDs, remixes of their songs, and some solo stuff from Geri and Emma. Surprisingly, I'm not shamed.

dj Thu, Apr 20, 2006 at 07:36 PM EST

you may not know who they are, but if you do, you know what i'm talking about. the group: STEPS, and the song: TRAGEDY. but you must also do the dance that goes with it. also, S CLUB 7.

Everything She Wants - Wham! Who doesn't love a little Wham! every now and then?
"If my best isn't good enough
then how can it be good enough for two?"

Charlane Thu, Apr 20, 2006 at 05:49 PM EST

too many to list here...but I'm a child of the 70's and there is a lot to either be proud of ... think Lynard Skynard, Blue Oyster Cult and The Grassroots!

nickie Thu, Apr 20, 2006 at 05:45 PM EST

I have Amy Grant's version of "The Things we do for love" on my iPod. Does that count?

Cass Thu, Apr 20, 2006 at 05:29 PM EST

Survivor. Sure, it's cool to like "Eye of the Tiger," but how many people get giddy when they hear "The Search is Over" or "I can't Hold Back"? I do.

Connie Thu, Apr 20, 2006 at 05:12 PM EST

In addition to my previous post, I'd like to add that I just sang *out loud* along to "Africa" by Toto which was followed immediately by "Believe It or Not" by Joe Scarbury. You know from Seinfeld...

Tommy G Thu, Apr 20, 2006 at 04:53 PM EST

Mr. Roboto - Styx.
Everybody Have Fun Tonight - Wang Chung.
Der Kommisar - After The Fire.
Relax - Frankie Goes To Hollywood.

Yes, I'm a child of the 80's. And dang proud of it.

Liz Thu, Apr 20, 2006 at 04:47 PM EST

How embarassed am I to say I like hearing Ashlee Simpson tunes from time to time on the ipod? Love "undiscovered" and "better off." In fact, I think that's what I'm going to go listen to right now!

Lynny Thu, Apr 20, 2006 at 04:42 PM EST

I totally have 10CC's "I'm Not In Love"... does that make me popwatch-cool? ;)

Jeanne Thu, Apr 20, 2006 at 04:29 PM EST

Air Supply. Barry Manilow. Ace of Base. Debbie Gibson. Celine Dion. The Carpenters.

But I refuse to be ashamed! I just have eclectic tastes dangit!

maus Thu, Apr 20, 2006 at 04:23 PM EST

I Think I Love You, the Partridge Family.

Need I say more?

Jeff Thu, Apr 20, 2006 at 04:09 PM EST

I love you people!!! "Never been to me" anything from Grease 2, "No Matter What" I thought I was the only one who was in a good place when i heard these.

Don Thu, Apr 20, 2006 at 04:09 PM EST

"Pure". Yeah that song is crazy angelic in it's smile-inducing-ness.

Amy Thu, Apr 20, 2006 at 04:05 PM EST

"I've never been to me" by Charlene. Makes my husband cringe every time it comes on, but sometimes those cheesy 70's songs are perfect!! My favorite line is "I've spent my nights exploring the subtle whoring that costs too much to be free, I've been to paradise, but I've never been to me"....oh and the spoken word part, priceless!

Jordan Thu, Apr 20, 2006 at 04:04 PM EST

Celine Dion's "A New Day Has Come." I want to cry with both joy and embarrassment when it comes on.

gene Thu, Apr 20, 2006 at 04:03 PM EST

Another two words: Spandau Ballet

Kari Thu, Apr 20, 2006 at 04:02 PM EST

I love bad music, and some of the stomach churners on my ipod include:

Make a Move on Me by Olivia Newton John
Ignition (Remix) by R Kelly
Buffalo Stance by Nenah Cherry (He's a Gigalo, Man!)

TMC Thu, Apr 20, 2006 at 03:57 PM EST

Pure by the Lightning Seeds. Makes me smile every time I hear it!

Ama Thu, Apr 20, 2006 at 03:50 PM EST

I love 10cc, I'm not ashamed to have them in my iPod at all.
Grouping 10cc with the likes of Milli Vanilli and the Brady Bunch is blasphemy.

mike Thu, Apr 20, 2006 at 03:49 PM EST

Although I couldn't stand 99% of the crap from the last wave of boy bands, I do have Bye, Bye,Bye by NSynch on my ipod. Is there a support group I can call?

MGH Thu, Apr 20, 2006 at 03:45 PM EST

Tiffany. Debbie Gibson. The Go-Gos. Barry Manilow... Oh the list goes on and on.

dh Thu, Apr 20, 2006 at 03:43 PM EST

Color Me Badd. Color me embarassed.

Michelle Thu, Apr 20, 2006 at 03:41 PM EST

Totally unrelated, but I am in shock that Amy Sherman-Palladino and her husband, Daniel, will not be involved with GG when it moves to the CW. This is awful! The show won't ever be the same without them! We need some Popwatch commentary on this shocking decision!

Tim Lade Thu, Apr 20, 2006 at 03:38 PM EST

Since you've been gooooooooooooooooooooooonnnneeee!

And anything by Madonna which I always have to guiltily say I am listening to because I am mixing a cd for a friend.

catheroo Thu, Apr 20, 2006 at 03:35 PM EST

Thank you, Popwatch, for letting me know who sings "The Things We Do for Love" and "I'm Not in Love." Now 10cc can take their place among Leo Sayer, Milli Vanilli, Gordon Lightfoot, and the Brady Bunch.

Janean Thu, Apr 20, 2006 at 03:29 PM EST

5 more words for you: Lou Bega, "Mambo No. 5"

N'Jeri Thu, Apr 20, 2006 at 03:18 PM EST

"Band of Gold" by Freida Payne or "More Than Yesterday" by Spiral Staircase always get me to sing at the top of my lungs.

daisyj Thu, Apr 20, 2006 at 03:17 PM EST

Oh god, I don't even know where to start. "No Matter What", by Boyzone? Katrina and the Waves's "Walking on Sunshine"? (The song may not be that embarassing, but the way it gets me dancing is.) Meat Loaf? All worthy choices, but in the end I have no choice but to go with "Danger Zone" by Kenny Loggins. Sing it with me:
Revvin' up your engine
Listen to her howlin' roar
Metal under tension
Beggin' you to touch and go.

Oh yeah.

Don Thu, Apr 20, 2006 at 03:17 PM EST

Oh, yeah. Journey, too. Which one is more shameful?
