Who's the next Carrie Underwood?

Mar 1, 2006, 11:02 AM | by Gary Susman

Categories: 'American Idol'

Well, that didn't take long. We're only a couple weeks into the semifinals of American Idol, and already, the producers are bringing back last year's winner Carrie Underwood to sing her hit, ''Jesus, Take the Wheel'' on tomorrow night's results show. There'll be a blatant contrast between Underwood's polish and the rawness of the current crop of semifinalists. Think any of them could actually achieve recording industry success on Underwood's level? Paris Bennett maybe? Melissa McGhee? Kellie Pickler? Mandisa?

Whose CD would you buy, PopWatchers?

Kellie Pickler is nothing compared to Carrie Underwood! Kellie doesn't even have half the talent that Carrie does and besides she's dumb as hell!

amanda Mon, Jan 15, 2007 at 09:16 PM EST

no matter what other peeps say carrie and kellie are the best ever and they are alot alike in my book.

Juju Thu, Aug 17, 2006 at 09:49 PM EST

Kellie and Carrie are two different women with a look of their own. I just hope Carrie does not turn into a tramp like Kelly has become.

kayla Sat, Jun 10, 2006 at 11:02 PM EST

i like carrie underwoods song because i like that song jesus take the wheel thats a good song please e-mail me back

Dre Thu, Mar 2, 2006 at 05:55 PM EST

John, you're a fucking moron. Please never speak in this blog again. Thank you.

tammy Thu, Mar 2, 2006 at 08:11 AM EST

As far as Carrie vs Kellie, Kellie has the personality that I wished Carrie would have had. As much as I loved hearing Carrie's voice, she bored me otherwise. I never enjoyed the interviews of Carrie as much as I already adore Kellie.

As far as singing, Paris has this amazing voice if she can pick the right songs. Someone take all of the Whitney, Mariah, Celine, etc. songs away from these women and make them branch out more. But if I had to pick on right now I would pick Katharine. Thank goodness we have weeks to find out who will grow and mature with the competition.

davidsask Thu, Mar 2, 2006 at 07:06 AM EST

The clear winner is in the guy's performances. Name doesn't have to be said!

john Wed, Mar 1, 2006 at 09:51 PM EST

Oh, and I'd buy Katharine Mcphee's or Ayla's CD...i kinda forgot to mention that.

john Wed, Mar 1, 2006 at 09:50 PM EST

Dre, what language! My ears are burning! Please Lord, forgive my eyes for seeing the f word!! I beg of you!

Anyway, I never really understood why people come into these response thingys and are all acting like 'Oh my God this is so stupid, u guys need to get lives.' Personally, when someone takes the time to read an article and then go one step further and make a comment to it, obviously this person is trying to hide the fact that they just read an article that they don't want to admit for whatever stupid reason, so, instead of saying something intelligent, and frankly, worth the time it takes to read, they act like they're above everyone else and say something stupid like you did, Dre. But that's just me. And yes, that was the longest sentence ever. Ever.

Thad Wed, Mar 1, 2006 at 07:55 PM EST

Mandisa, thats it. period.

Dre Wed, Mar 1, 2006 at 07:17 PM EST

I have a better, more relevent question... who gives a fuck?

jamal Wed, Mar 1, 2006 at 06:04 PM EST

MANDISA ROCKS DA HOUSE! SHES ARETHRA 2.0!

dwight Wed, Mar 1, 2006 at 04:55 PM EST

Jonathon - - "Jesus Take the Wheel" is Carrie's current single. It just spent 6 weeks atop the country charts and is still in that chart's top 5, so it seems obvious that is what she would sing...

dwight Wed, Mar 1, 2006 at 04:53 PM EST

Mentioning Melissa McGhee in the same paragraph as Carrie Underwood should be illegal. MM is wretched. Go back to the pagent circuit where you belong, honey.

suzzysnet Wed, Mar 1, 2006 at 04:41 PM EST

I agree that Kellie is too similar to Carrie as far as experience, looks, etc. But although I like Kellie she is just not as polished as Carrie was even in the beginning of last year's Idol. Katharine has my votes so far.

belle4397 Wed, Mar 1, 2006 at 04:34 PM EST

Who says the next winner has to be one of the girls? I think the guys are much more interesting. Personally I'm rooting for Ace, he is HOT and he sings really well.

jonathan Wed, Mar 1, 2006 at 03:58 PM EST

paris all the way! and mandisa! and katharine! kellie is too much like carrie.. not gonna happen.

djm Wed, Mar 1, 2006 at 03:47 PM EST

PS - Isn't "Jesus take..." like 100 years old? Didn't it come out like last Sept. or something? Doesn't Carrie have any other singles on her cd that she can perform? I think she has/had a great voice but she just isn't a compelling performer to me.

djm Wed, Mar 1, 2006 at 03:44 PM EST

So far there hasn't been a "Summertime" moment this season (nor, sadly was there one last season for me). The closest thing so far this year was Paris on the audition show - when she did that jazz number my jaw almost hit the floor and I got chills - and face it, she was doin it all alone with no back-up and she was brilliant. I am hoping she recreates that at some point this season. Since the show has started I have fallen for Mandisa and taylor - i'd probably buy a few tracks from iTunes from them.

Hugo Wed, Mar 1, 2006 at 03:18 PM EST

Daisyj, you are a hoot!

Rich Wed, Mar 1, 2006 at 02:51 PM EST

I can tell you that I'm thrilled beyond belief to be able to see Carrie on tomorrow's broadcast! I've bought several Some Hearts CDs for family, friends, and for a variety of projects. As far as whose CD I would buy from this year's group, I'm afraid the rawness you eluded to has not engaged me to be able to predict that just yet.

daisyj Wed, Mar 1, 2006 at 02:46 PM EST

Frankly, that song of Carrie's has me kind of worried- don't you think she's distributing poor driving advice? In the first verse, the woman in the song hits a patch of ice on the road, and instead of staying calm and steering into the skid she just lets go of the wheel and demands that Jesus take over. Which seems like a bad idea to me- how does she know that Jesus is a good driver*? What if he gets panicky and slams on the brakes? Does he even get the pedals, or just the wheel? Anyway, there isn't a lot of ice where he grew up; it might make more sense to call on one of the Norse gods in this case ('Odin, Take the Wheel'?). Not that I'm saying she shouldn't perform it, but in the intrests of safety I think Fox needs to run a disclaimer at the bottom of the screen while she's singing.

(*Yes, I am aware that it is a metaphor. My point is that it's a bad metaphor.)

K, so right now, Ayla and Katharine have earned my votes, but not my 10 bucks. We'll have to see who can sing the "Alone" of this year..that is, the song sung on the show that I must find somewhere on the internet and download it so I can relive the performance over and over again cuz it's THAT good..seriously, last year, when Carrie sang "Alone" i knew that she was gonna win, she instantly made herself my favorite..so until there's an "Alone" moment, I don't know who's got my money.

And btw, Kelly Clarkson definitely rocks, Breakaway is like..one of the best CD's ever! No Idol shall ever match her fame!

Roman Wed, Mar 1, 2006 at 01:39 PM EST

I'm really digging Melissa McGhee right now. She was very on last night. I would definitely buy a CD from her. Same with Katherine McPhee or Mandisa. They're both great. I'm not sure if anyone can match Carrie in terms of industry success, at least not at this stage of the game. She's done wonders on the country charts and her CD is really good. However, Carrie hasn't come close to catch my fav Idol, Kelly, so really, they all have a long way to go.

Larry Wed, Mar 1, 2006 at 01:37 PM EST

Carrie and Kellie's voices are different but their backstories are similar. The whole "I've never been on a plane before, people in LA are weird, I ate calamari" thing grated on my nerves last night. I don't understand why the judges have to keep hammering us over the head with how LIKEABLE Kellie is. Why does it matter? Are they hoping for some weird, Dr. Phil-esque tie-in when she reunites with her dad?

Anyway...I would buy Mandisa's CD in a heartbeat. I like Katherine, Lisa and Ayla but would have to see what they came up with first. Kinnik has so much potential but I think she's homeward bound...

brandonk Wed, Mar 1, 2006 at 01:23 PM EST

Hissss...I know whose CD I wouldn't buy: Carrie Underwood's. If Paris or Mandisa put out a pop/rock CD, then I might buy it...I wish Fantasia had...I'm not a big fan of the gospel/R&B stuff.

Jaime Wed, Mar 1, 2006 at 12:43 PM EST

Kellie Picklers...cd.....but no one will ever be Kelly Clarkson.....I still have her cd in my cd player....

to brad Wed, Mar 1, 2006 at 12:33 PM EST

i get why ppl are comparing carrie to kelly, but the truth is, they're so NOT the same person. they share the same hair color and cuteness and that's about it. carrie always had a very flawless voice, while kellie's is decent but nowhere near as flawless. also, carrie's personality was very tame and kind of blah where as kellie is a firecracker. very outgoing, talkative personality! i think carrie is suited to be a singer while kellie is suited to be some sort of actress...just my two cents.

so far, i don't love anyone enough to buy the cds, but i'm sure in the coming weeks, someone will emerge as my favorite!

Brad Wed, Mar 1, 2006 at 12:20 PM EST

Mandisa all the way. And aren't Carrie Underwood and Kellie Pickler the same person??
