'Sopranos' or 'Housewives'? Which will you watch?

Mar 8, 2006, 10:44 AM | by Gary Susman

Categories: 'The Sopranos', Desperate Housewives, Television

9111__sopranos_l Hoping to drum up excitement for this Sunday's double premiere of The Sopranos and Big Love, HBO has made available a 10-minute clip of the first episode of Big Love (at AOL Television). And as for The Sopranos, well, we did our best, but omerta still reigns there, so no preview clips, but there is this addictive Sopranos Sudoku game (posted, aptly, by New Jersey's Star-Ledger newspaper).

Will it be enough to compete with ABC's Sunday night one-two punch of Desperate Housewives and Grey's Anatomy? Probably not. In a way, The Sopranos is about to become the victim of its own success. To wit: Housewives might never have been greenlit without the example of HBO's Six Feet Under, a show made possible in turn by the popularity of The Sopranos. Still, it's possible that Sopranos devotees will stick around to watch HBO.

Which will you watch, and which will you record to watch later?

Lisa Mon, Jun 11, 2007 at 02:10 PM EST

Sopranos-no contest, DH is a joke the only reason I get HBO is because of the Sopranos!

Bob Tue, May 23, 2006 at 02:10 PM EST

Does anyone have a DVD or VHS recording of the final episode of Grays Anatomy that I can buy?

daniel Mon, May 8, 2006 at 07:36 AM EST

steven Sun, Mar 12, 2006 at 10:38 PM EST

by woke up as it ended i mean. woke up as the soprano's ended.

steven Sun, Mar 12, 2006 at 10:36 PM EST

Hey.. i fell asleep and woke up right as it ended. does anyone know exactly when they repeat it?? thanks in advance.

caron Sat, Mar 11, 2006 at 03:25 PM EST

I will be watching Sopranos and Big Love ..it a no brainer...DH sucks this year anyway so we wont miss anything. But I will TIVO Greys Anatomy. Thats a show worth recording.

Brian Sat, Mar 11, 2006 at 02:28 PM EST

No Contest Housewives all the way, HBO will repeat it 30 more times in the week

Janet Thu, Mar 9, 2006 at 11:52 PM EST

Sopranos - no contest. "The Sopranos" is the best show on TV and maybe the best show of all time. It is artistically honest, fresh, powerful. It doesn't set up its plots to cater to the Hollywood in crowd and the current Hollywood crazes. It comes from where all good art should: the heart and soul of the creators. If you know any of the worlds it inhabits (New Jersey Italian-Americans, psychotherapy, the people who need/use it), you know how honest, accurate and perceptive it is. If Nancy Marchand had not died, it would have been even more mesmerizing because I think the main focus has always been the far-reaching effects of the mother-child bond, especially when it is pathological in some way. The Mafia is just part of the scenery - this show is about PEOPLE and their lives and conflicts. And the cast is the BEST ever - Gandolfini is incredible; Bracco and Falco and Imperioli fantastic. And there is never a false note in any of the cast - great directing. The show is a gem.

Stephan Thu, Mar 9, 2006 at 02:24 PM EST

TV?
TIVO?
Don't need those!
I'll read a book!!!

JMH Thu, Mar 9, 2006 at 01:27 PM EST

The Sopranos. it's time for housewives to spend time with Adriana in the woods.

maddy Thu, Mar 9, 2006 at 11:31 AM EST

Are you kidding? Absolutely no contest .. The Sopranos is much, much better TV (it's not TV, it's HBO). I won't even TiVo DH. Hopefully DH's ratings go down the drain and they cancel it.

Jeff Thu, Mar 9, 2006 at 09:32 AM EST

Sopranos or Desperate Housewives...hmm...I'll watch Family Guy!

Miles Thu, Mar 9, 2006 at 08:15 AM EST

oh, well, I'll tivo soprano's, but I guess i'm in the middle of the DH season, can't stop watching that... but who cares, there's TIVO and on DEMAND... and the 20th century vcr... you can watch your cake and eat it too... this is just a topic what with technology today.

Mary Alice Wed, Mar 8, 2006 at 09:58 PM EST

I will watch DH and GA and tivo Sopranos and Big Love. Thank God for TIVO, how did we ever live without it.

cindy Wed, Mar 8, 2006 at 06:11 PM EST

Ha-ha! You CANNOT be serious! "Desperate Housewives" couldn't even carry "Sex and the City"s Jimmy Choo's let alone compete with "The Sopranos". Absurd!! Anyone with an ounce of taste will be watching Carmela and Tony this Sunday.

Dan Wed, Mar 8, 2006 at 05:46 PM EST

Definately The sopranos. I think housewives is an awful show and greys anatomy is just another ER. The sopranos ill go down in history as one of the greates TV shows in histroy and the other shows will be lucky to be around in a few years.

Nicole Wed, Mar 8, 2006 at 05:40 PM EST

I will be watching The Sopranos this Sunday. DH is a piece of garbage.

Tiffany Wed, Mar 8, 2006 at 05:38 PM EST

Without a doubt THE SOPRANOS is in aleague of iots own. The writing itself writes itself around DH, which, I'm sorry is just a soap opera at night. DH sucks.

Garry Wed, Mar 8, 2006 at 05:19 PM EST

I love "Desperate Housewives" and would happily watch it any time, any day--especially opposite a show that glorifies a family of murderers.

Jules Wed, Mar 8, 2006 at 05:00 PM EST

Since there is rarely a show that offers such intense storylines, taut dialogue, and polished characterization as The Sopranos, I believe I'll be drooling over HBO on Sundays. Desperate Housewives is campy drivel, it's nowhere in the same vicinity as Sopranos.

cirocco Wed, Mar 8, 2006 at 04:26 PM EST

I'm renewing my subscription to HBO just so I can watch the sopranos this sunday!!

Stephanie Wed, Mar 8, 2006 at 04:10 PM EST

I once had dinner with Michael Imperioli and his wife. They are really intelligent and amazing gifted. However, I am sorry I am a traitor. I love Desperate Housewives. I wish that I had TVO.

Gus Wed, Mar 8, 2006 at 04:06 PM EST

SOPRANOS, no question about it, I will pay for HBO 3x if I have to!

Ivonne Wed, Mar 8, 2006 at 04:05 PM EST

THE SOPRANOS..WE BEEN LONGING FOR THIS.. DH IS NOT AT ALL A BETTER SHOW, IF DH COMES BACK W/BETTER Ratins it is only because SOPARANOS is on CABBLE TV.

Sue Wed, Mar 8, 2006 at 03:53 PM EST

I live on the west coast and will watch Sopranos and Big Love on the east coast feed at 6 and 7 o'clock, then catch DH (yawn)and Grey's at 9 and 10. DH is really getting old this season what with the focus almost entirely on Gaby. And yes, it's true that in the ratings DH will beat Sopranos due to cable vs. network, but that doesn't mean DH is the better show. No way! I have spent the past 2 weeks watching Season 5 of the Sopranos to refresh my memory. You know what they say, "good things come to those that wait" and I am sure we are in for a great final season of Soprano's!!

Janie Wed, Mar 8, 2006 at 03:02 PM EST

The only shows I watch on Sunday are Cold Case, Crossing Jordan, and re-runs of Veronica Mars.

Todd Wed, Mar 8, 2006 at 03:00 PM EST

"Desperate Housewives" has definitely lost my interest this season, but "Grey's Anatomy" was thankfully there to pick it up again. Granted, I'm one of the many without HBO right now, but even if I had it, I'd pick "Housewives." It's been so long since I've seen "Sopranos" that I'm not sure I even remember what's going on. I am, however, very interested in "Big Love." My sweet, sweet Ginnifer Goodwin can do no wrong. I've ever seen "Mona Lisa Smile" a few too many times just to watch her. She's amazing and I hope this show succeeds in making her a star (but what is up with Chloe Sevigny? She looks terrible.)

EP Sato Wed, Mar 8, 2006 at 02:41 PM EST

My man Tony will be reigning supreme once again. All it will take is the death of some major characters to get us uber fans to bust out our old season 1-5 dvds and anxiously await the next episode. The show has gone down significantly since season 3, but nothing brings oiut the best in a show like the line "the beginning of the end" (it worked for the SHield anyway).

california Wed, Mar 8, 2006 at 02:06 PM EST

I watch Cold Case on CBS, and then Law and Order Criminal Intent and Crossing Jordan on NBC. So I will be watching neither Desperate Housewives nor Sopranos.

Sam Van Eerden Wed, Mar 8, 2006 at 02:00 PM EST

Howabout.....Neither!

GoddessLu Wed, Mar 8, 2006 at 01:56 PM EST

Sniff. Why oh why HBO can't you give me inexpensive TV? I love both Sopranos and DH and am warming up to Grey's (but it's OK if I fall asleep). Actually I fall asleep sometimes during DH too...oh well--Go Tony!

brandonk Wed, Mar 8, 2006 at 01:44 PM EST

I don't have HBO, so that makes the decision easy. I would expect DH to beat the Sopranos, since it's on a network and more people have access to it. However, even if I had HBO, I wouldn't watch the Sopranos...nothing I've read about it has interested me.

pg Wed, Mar 8, 2006 at 01:42 PM EST

Since this is the premiere, I'm watching the Sopranos then I'll catch Big Love later in the week when it repeats. Strangely, I don't feel as though I'll be missing much by passing on Desperate Housewives

Mary Wed, Mar 8, 2006 at 01:41 PM EST

I live on the west coast so I can watch the east coast feed of the Sopranos at 6 and Big Love at 7, have dinner and then watch DH at 9 and Grey's at 10. Works out perfect!!

Michelle Wed, Mar 8, 2006 at 01:31 PM EST

Watch The Sopranos, record DH and hope I remember to watch it at some point. Will watch Grey live and record Big Love.

Lily Wed, Mar 8, 2006 at 01:15 PM EST

Sopranos all the way!!!
Do people still wtach DH? I gave up a long time ago.

Howard Wed, Mar 8, 2006 at 01:10 PM EST

Housewives will win, because you can catch the Sopranos any number of times during the week, and you have to watch or record DH on Sunday. However, with the ability to record two shows at once on the "Faux-vo", I'll record both and watch Sopranos first.

charlotte Wed, Mar 8, 2006 at 01:10 PM EST

I've never watched either of them and don't intend to. Not everybody can afford HBO!

Vance Wed, Mar 8, 2006 at 01:04 PM EST

I'm kinda over both, but bring on Grey's Anatomy at 10pm (sorry Big Love, love you Ginnifer Goodwin but George is more exciting).

Catherine Wed, Mar 8, 2006 at 01:00 PM EST

I will be watching the sopranos. I am so over Desperate housewives.

tyell Wed, Mar 8, 2006 at 12:53 PM EST

Its not a big choice. I can watch Eva Longoria in lingerie, or I can watch strippers and real live nude women on the Sopranos. Sopranos is the best show on tv, and desperate housewives is a mediocre attempt at network tv trying to catch up to HBO.

annie Wed, Mar 8, 2006 at 12:51 PM EST

I've lost interest in the Sopranos and don't care to go back.

Monday Wed, Mar 8, 2006 at 12:47 PM EST

will watch Soprano's and Grey's.

Tyler D Wed, Mar 8, 2006 at 12:44 PM EST

Sopranos. I'll tape Housewives and Grey's and watch both later. It will be weird catching up with the familia though. It's been off the air for so long that I started to forget what happened last season. However, I do often remember certain images or scenes from the Sopranos, and it kept happening so often recently that I had to go back a watch a few of my DVDs.

Amber Wed, Mar 8, 2006 at 12:42 PM EST

There is no question...I have been excited to get back to Soprano's for almost 2 years. Why oh why did it take so long to come back? So I will watch Sopranos and Grey's Anatomy...Monday morning I will be tired.

Ned Wed, Mar 8, 2006 at 12:23 PM EST

Desperate Housewives, I don't have HBO so it's a pretty easy choice, lol. I just catch up with Soprano's when the DVDs come out.

Buffy Wed, Mar 8, 2006 at 12:22 PM EST

Neither, thanks.

nathan Wed, Mar 8, 2006 at 12:11 PM EST

Sopranos of course! Desperate Housewives is just a mediocre show created to fill the void left by Sex & the City. It has neither the humor or the depth of character that Sex had. easy choice.

lori Wed, Mar 8, 2006 at 12:06 PM EST

I'm getting HBO just for Sopranos. What does that say? DH doesn't even get tivo'ed anymore.

Evan Parker Wed, Mar 8, 2006 at 12:00 PM EST

Housewives and Greys. Why? Because HBO will be running Sopranos a dozen times next week. Probably watch Sopranos Sunday night on HBO West.

pn Wed, Mar 8, 2006 at 11:50 AM EST

Sopranos was just off the air with no original episodes for too long. I am going to have to go with Desperate Housewives and Gray's Anatomy

Robb Wed, Mar 8, 2006 at 11:48 AM EST

Sunday night is now miserable:

Simpson's: Jumped The Shark
Desperate Housewives: Jumped the Shark
Soprano's: Hit-or-Miss. Another season of abandoned plotlines and questionable moments is guaranteed. Hopefully no one "gets the Vito" this year.
Family Guy is the only good show on Sunday nights. (Ok, maybe Gray's, but we've never watched it.)

Katie Wed, Mar 8, 2006 at 11:47 AM EST

Sopranos, no contest. I've been looking for a reason to dumb the feeble Housewives, and this is it.

cathy Wed, Mar 8, 2006 at 11:43 AM EST

let's see, i actually deleted housewives off my tivo list last night because i realized i wasn't ever watching it. and i ordered hbo on monday after cancelling it after the last episode of sopranos.

John Wed, Mar 8, 2006 at 11:33 AM EST

F U C K

Paul U. Wed, Mar 8, 2006 at 11:32 AM EST

not that "Housewives" is high art...but it is definately better that Sopranos. i just can't watch it. i'mno prude, but it's just too much cussing and violence for me. maybe there is something wrong with me!

Josh Wed, Mar 8, 2006 at 11:25 AM EST

I don't have HBO and have never seen 'Sopranos,' so by default 'Desperate'. But if I was a fan of both, I'd go 'Sopranos' as the buzz for this season is great and 'DH' hasn't been as great this season. (well, taping one and watching the other actually, while also taping 'Family Guy' on another TV/VCR. But I digress). And then I would tape the first episode of 'Big Love' to see if I liked it, but watch 'Grey's' live.

Mike in Moncton Wed, Mar 8, 2006 at 11:20 AM EST

I don't watch either show...but, if forced to make a choice, commercials...or no commercials?

DUH.

Daniel Wed, Mar 8, 2006 at 11:15 AM EST

It's a no-brainer. You watch the Sopranos, and TIVO Desperate Housewives. The Sopranos haven't been on in almost 2 years. We've been craving, and lusting for it. Although Housewives is entertaining it's still not in the same league, and there are still those bloody advertisments to deal with. Sopranos wins the death match because I can watch with no interruptions.....

Brian Wed, Mar 8, 2006 at 11:10 AM EST

This one is a no-brainer. Sopranos wins without much of a fight. Housewives may get recorded, but Tony and Carmella are much - MUCH - more interesting than Susan and Mike.

jcoop Wed, Mar 8, 2006 at 11:05 AM EST

a no-brainer! i will watch the sopranos and record the sopranos to watch again. i'm desperately excited! housewives what?! i couldn't be less interested.
