What are the worst movie sequels of all time?

154310__speed_l''Sequels, as a general rule, blow,'' writes Chris Nashawaty in the new issue of EW. ''But some are so ill-conceived, so cynically calculated, and so aggressively inept that they need to be called out and held accountable in the public square. Or, in this case, Entertainment Weekly.'' And that's exactly what he goes on to do in ''The 25 Worst Sequels Ever Made,'' a hilarious piece that includes my new favorite term -- je ne sais crap -- and skewers my all-time least-favorite sequel, Speed 2: Cruise Control costarring Sandra Bullock and Jason Patric, pictured). It should've been Rated P -- for puh-leeze!

Anyhow, PopWatchers, check out the full list of 25 offenders and then weigh in with your picks for the all-time worst movie sequels. Does your list match ours? Holla back!

Final Destination 2.

Ashley Tue, Mar 21, 2006 at 06:15 PM EST

Bring it on 2 was pretty damn bad.

Big Paul Tue, Mar 14, 2006 at 03:35 AM EST

What about Matrix 2 and Matrix 3? Lousy, self-indulgent, self-congratulatory, pompous trash compared to the original. The Wachowski Bros must have come down in a major way followig the post-Matrix wrap coffee break.... :(

Smokey and the Bandit 3

Stephanie Tue, Mar 7, 2006 at 01:23 PM EST

Arthur 2 was sooo bad.

Here are some of my choices for worst sequels:
Ghostbusters 2
Love Story 2: Oliver's Story
Caddyshack 2
Meatballs 2 and 3
Hardbodies 2
Weekend at Bernies 2
Every Police Academy movie after the 1st.
Grease 2
Smokey and the Bandit 3 (because Jerry Reed can't act his way out of a frozen orange juice container).

Always wary of sequels, I have avoided most of the list. To me, the worst are spun off of favotite movies. So Phantom Menace and Batman and Robin are at the top of my list.

Randall Mon, Mar 6, 2006 at 05:23 PM EST

Others have already mentioned it, but my first thought was "Where's 'Grease 2'?"

dma69 Mon, Mar 6, 2006 at 02:24 PM EST

I'm surprised no one mentioned Back To the Future II & III. Both were horrible.

Lisa Mon, Mar 6, 2006 at 11:18 AM EST

Legally Blonde 2. End of poll.

Howard Mon, Mar 6, 2006 at 10:33 AM EST

The magazine had a quality list of best sequels, except that Superman 2 was left off. All the others included above definitely hit the mark for bad sequels, though.

BoxOfficeGoddess Sun, Mar 5, 2006 at 05:28 PM EST

Great list! Too bad "Basic Instinct 2" wasn't released in time to make your list. And you forgot "Grease 2", "Psycho 2", and "American Pie 3".

BoxOfficeGoddess Sun, Mar 5, 2006 at 05:27 PM EST

Great list! Too bad "Fatal Attraction 2" wasn't released in time to make your list. And you forgot "Grease 2", "Psycho 2", and "American Pie 3".

Heather X Sun, Mar 5, 2006 at 04:36 PM EST

I just saw The Ring 2 last night and OH MAN was it awful. Utter CRAP!!

tommy five-tone Sun, Mar 5, 2006 at 03:31 AM EST

Uh, yeah, there's an error on your list. You included OCEAN'S TWELVE, but that's one of the *best* sequels ever. Thought you should be aware of your mistake so you make the necessary change to the story. No need to thank me. Just happy to help.

Mshelly Sat, Mar 4, 2006 at 09:26 PM EST

Ooh do I have a mouth full about this, you can add Jurassic Park 2 & 3, Species 2, Home alone 2 lost in New York ( how many times you going to leave the same kid home GEEZ ), Universal soldier 2, Psycho 2. Nightmare on Elm street After the 2nd one it was all down hill from there, Mission impossible 2, Creep show 2, Terminator 3, Dr. Dolittle 2 ( The 1st was bad enough & they had to go make a sequel ), Spider man 2, The Jaws sequels. Let's not for the Freewilly sequels, 2 fast 2 furious & Bring it on 2. As another poster so eloquently put it, here are a list of the most "craptastic" movie sequels ever. I'm sure you'll all agree *Smile*

Arthur 2: On the Rocks anybody?

Definitely Grease 2 and Bridget Jones 2

Secret of Nimh 2?

How about the ultimate worse sequel (of sorts) Prince in Graffitti Bridge!

WA Sat, Mar 4, 2006 at 05:41 PM EST

HEEEELLLLOOOOOO GREASE 2! One point to prove my case Michelle Pfeifer doing some weird dance step and song in "heaven", with a guy on a motorcycle riding around. Let's throw in one mo', a musical number in A BOWLING ALLEY! HORRIBLE, GLITTER HORRIBLE! Still Love ya Mariah!

Dre Sat, Mar 4, 2006 at 05:22 PM EST

#1 worst sequel without a doubt is From Dusk Till Dawn 2. Why oh why did this ever see the light of day!?!?!

Tom Sat, Mar 4, 2006 at 04:32 PM EST

Final Destination 2

Nutty Professor 2: The Klumps - a clump of crap is what it is!

Beverly Hills Cop 2 - a sequel co-starring Brigitte Nielsen? Is that supposed to be appetizing?

Meet the Fockers - terrible even with the presence of Babs.

Best sequels: Aliens, The Godfather Part II, Lethal Weapon 2, The Two Jakes, Return To Oz (not technically a sequel but a good picking up of the first story and taking it in a new direction).

Matt Sat, Mar 4, 2006 at 02:59 PM EST

Agent Cody Banks 2-'nuff said.

Ron Mwangaguhunga Sat, Mar 4, 2006 at 01:39 PM EST

Scary Movie 2 is the worst by far. The Wayans Brothers all but admitted they wrote this on-the-fly to capitalize on the success of the first Scary Movie. I have never slept in a movie theater, but I actually slept in this one. If I ever see a Wayan, I'm demanding my money back.

ray Sat, Mar 4, 2006 at 01:02 PM EST

major league 2

gogo Sat, Mar 4, 2006 at 11:05 AM EST

This article was right on the money. I totally agreed with the list and honestly it could go on forever. I only have movie to add, Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle. This movie was soo unoriginal that it used some of the same songs from the first movie and was complete crap. I LOVED Charlie's Angels but the sequel totally ruined the fun. Also I wanted to tell Todd that the best Scary Movie is part 2. It was the funniest by far and if you are looking for anything to make sense in those films you are looking in the wrong place.

Sergio Sat, Mar 4, 2006 at 08:59 AM EST

That was such a great and funny article!!! And I gotta say that it must've been tough to choose only 25 among so many crappy sequels. What about Superman IV, The Ring 2, Neverending Story 2? Matrix Reloaded wasn't nearly as good as the original, but you gotta admit that it has one of the coolest car chases scenes ever.

Ned Sat, Mar 4, 2006 at 01:06 AM EST

I have a feeling that when X3 comes out, it will take top honors, but until then, I guess I would have to say Batman And Robin. Another 48 Hours wasn't very good either.

Todd Sat, Mar 4, 2006 at 12:29 AM EST

I was really glad to see crap like "Ocean's Twelve" and "Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights" on there, because it seems like studios getting REALLY lazy in hatching new ideas. These were just plain bad. The two I would like to add, though, are "Scary Movie 2" and "Halloween 3." Did either of these sequels even make sense? I know "Scary Movie" and "Scary Movie 3" aren't great (and "Scary Movie 4" probably won't be much better -- why, Anna Faris, why?), but they're both stellar compared to that middle piece of crap. What was up with that ghost? What was the point of Chris Elliott's character? How does David Cross keep getting conned into doing crap? And how come "Halloween3" didn't feature Michael Myers? Are we really supposed to be scared of a mask factory? It's a mask factory, for God's sake!

And if we're going to start adding things like "Prince and Me 2" to this list, I think we're going to be going for a while. "Bring it on 2"? "Wild Things 2"? "Cruel Intentions 2"? "Cruel Intentions 3"? "Skulls 2"? I think you see where I'm going with this. I mean, they're even making a "Cutting Edge 2"! At least Moira Kelly and D.B. Sweeney were smart enough to stay away from that wreck.

Jeff Fri, Mar 3, 2006 at 10:24 PM EST

What about Bridget Jones 2? Legally Blone and Bridget Jones were both really good chick flicks that even guys can love, and they ruined them with the worst sequels of all-time.

Chris McVetta Fri, Mar 3, 2006 at 09:53 PM EST

THE #1 worst sequel of all time is...

"Caddyshack 2"

I've only been able to watch it in 10 minute segments, here and there, before switching the channel and screaming: "That's all I can standz ...I can't standz no more!!"

Definitely a case where the makers of this ill-advised idea should NOT "be the ball."

"Men in Black II" and "Sister Act 2"...and there is a sequel to "The Prince and Me" that just came out too.

Laura Fri, Mar 3, 2006 at 07:18 PM EST

Oops! I spelled Chris Nashawaty wrong!! A thousand apologies!! [hides in a corner in shame]

Laura Fri, Mar 3, 2006 at 07:16 PM EST

I just want to say that that article was freakin' hilarious!! Kudos, Chris Nashworthy, for being able to make hysterical light of totally unwatchable, craptastic movies!

Though, I must admit that just looking of that picture of John Travolta in "Staying Alive" had me rolling on the floor with laughter...

Thad Fri, Mar 3, 2006 at 06:57 PM EST

Grease 2 (even though it has Cool Rider)
Exorcist 2 or 3
Charlies Angels 2
Rambo 3
Alien 3
Very Brady Sequel
Revenge of the Killer Tomatoes
Halloween (pick one)

Wait i'll think of more that were worse than the ones listed

Four Words People: Urban Legends Final Cut

dmac Fri, Mar 3, 2006 at 06:17 PM EST

Id Have 2 Say That Dirty Dancing 2 Havana Nights, Leprechaun In Space.

momo Fri, Mar 3, 2006 at 06:11 PM EST

i have to say "dumb and dumberer" was one of the worst sequels i've seen. i went to see it for $1 and i still left early. yuck.

as a kid i LOVED "the neverending story" and the sequel was craptastic!

oooh and what about "the karate kid" parts 3 and the next generation with hilary swank? talk about a franchise taking a huge nosedive into crapdom

Jakeem Fri, Mar 3, 2006 at 06:01 PM EST

I can't believe you consider any of those sequels to be worse than "The Exorcist II: The Heretic." Among its offenses is reducing the great actor James Earl Jones to a co-starring role as a witch doctor who spouts the ridiculous line: "If Pazuzu comes for you, I will spit a leopard."

brandonk Fri, Mar 3, 2006 at 06:01 PM EST

I vote for Batman Forever...I love superhero movies, but I couldn't get into that. Speed 2 wasn't horrible, but if you compare it to Speed, it was definitely a poor sequel. I have a feeling that X-Men 3 is going to go on the next "worst sequel" list.

Mike Fri, Mar 3, 2006 at 05:29 PM EST

So glad that Grease 2 isn't on the list! I would've been fuming!
