Paula Abdul: What's up with her?

Mar 24, 2006, 01:06 PM | by Michael Slezak

Categories: 'American Idol', Reality TV

94211__paula_l Under the category of ''And you're just noticing this now?'', New York's Daily News has a story discussing the loopy on-air behavior exhibited this season by American Idol judge Paula Abdul -- and the fact that fans have been discussing her ''Glaaaadiator!'' moments on message boards all over the Internet. Now I'm not sure Paula's behaving much differently than she has for Idol's previous four seasons, but I'll say this:

I'm not especially bothered by her hyper-positive non-critiques (read between the lines, and you can figure out which performances she actually enjoyed). What irks me is how the ''Straight Up'' singer consistently, rudely interrupts the program's only coherent panelist, Simon Cowell. Hey, rude lady, let the British dude have his say!

Or else, as I've suggested before, swap Paula and Randy's seats, so she won't be able to get all up in Simon's space. Any other suggestions for improving the Idol judging process -- short of a tranquilizer gun?

We watch american idol in south africa and i must agree with most of the comments in that paula Abdul really makes no sense at all when she speaks. She slurs like a drunkard and is generally quite annoying to watch....i even resort to pressing the mute button on my remote because she annoys me so much

T Nyman Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 01:15 AM EST

I think Paulas behavior is odd. But what I find even more odd is how quick to judge people are. We do not know what is going on, we are only assuming.
If she is on pain killers for a legitimate reason and its do the show in pain or take meds., what would you do?
There are life situations that cause grief and pain. Some of us have actually been prescribed anti depressent drugs for legitimate reasons.
There are many diseases that cause odd behavior and speach problems. Just to mention one is a mini stroke.
I have a relative that suffered from mini strokes. We thought he had been drinking and accused him of such to which he denied it. We didn't believe him.
How ashamed we all are now since he has been put on medication for having many mini strokes and is going through rehabilatation therpy for balance, speech, and memory. He didn't even know himself he was having them.
So I saw judge not least ye be judged.
Just call me experience speaking!

I can honestly say that I have never wanted someone fired like I want Paula Abdul fired. I am so angry at the scandle that she is creating and what is worse she seems to be getting away with it. She has been completly off the wall in the last two interviews. I dont know what she is on but she is supposed to be a rolemodel, and instead she is flaunting her inability to stay sober long enough to give an interview to major TV news Broadcast at 8 o'clock in the morning. What is this woman doing? First she tries to seduce on the men on the show, now she is obviously on drugs. The woman needs a dose of reality. Give the job to someone who cares and will appreciate it. Get Paula off the show!

unknown Wed, Jan 17, 2007 at 12:31 AM EST

I'm watching Paula now on American Idol and I must say her behaviour is not only bizarre but annoying. I can't even watch her. I DO remember reading an article on her a few years back stating that she suffers from some sort of pain disorder...Could she be medicated? I could only think a medical reason would allow her to remain on A.I. I think if it were 'drugs' & alcohol she would be gone.

Juju Mon, Aug 14, 2006 at 08:41 AM EST

Paula is whacked! That is what's up with her. Every season there is a resident hearthrob she goes after. She is so transparent. She thought Constantine was going to win, and afterwards they would go celebrating. She used to look at Corey like he was "Soup Dejour." She kissed a girl contestant on the lips, smooched up Simon, She needs to go get checked for mono.

Nancy Walker Mon, Jul 24, 2006 at 09:50 PM EST

Paula just needs to grow up. I hate the way she goes after the young guys. I definitely believe the scandal about her and Corey Clark. She probably would have gone after Bo except, Carolyn wasn't having it. I remember how she drooled over that model/singer. He was such a jerk. He is silly too. He said:"Paula is a beautiful, beautiful woman. Too bad she is an older woman." This should tell her something.

kg3131 Sun, Jul 16, 2006 at 04:29 PM EST

paula should be replaced with someone who has their head screwed on right ... shes rude and obnoxious and looks high all the time

renea Fri, Apr 7, 2006 at 09:49 PM EST

Well i can tell u what is wrong why shes actin that way is because shes been high for the past couple of episodes she needs to do somethin to find help for her problem that is whats goin on
i mean paula is a wonderful beautiful person and so famous but if she cant keep it tunned down she needs to be took off the show no matter what and quit flirtin with all the boys like ace deffiently its just not right renea from mississippi

foxy Thu, Mar 30, 2006 at 05:05 AM EST

I have wanted to make a comment about Paula actually since last season. You know i like that lady but I think she has a serious problem and I think it is that she is on some type of medication or just drugs period. She is actually embarrassing at times i mean really the stupid things she says just don't make any sense. She drools over the guys which is also ridiculous she is old enough to be there mother and I don't know I feel there is something terribly wrong with her. I feel she needs some help not just all this critizing for in the past season, although i saw some of this behavior last season, she was just great so something has gone wrong.
Why doesn't AI do something about this. If she has a drug problem get the lady some help for heaven sake.
Simon may come across to tough at times but he is the only one that makes any sense and at least 75% of the time I agree with what he has to say.
I thought i would just die when Ace first sang and she is drooling almost and at the end says HELLO in the dumbest voice that sounded like a 12 year old girl.
SOMEONE HELP HER PLEASE!!!

Rishi Mon, Mar 27, 2006 at 03:04 PM EST

Paula can you say Crack Cocaine

Maurine Mon, Mar 27, 2006 at 09:31 AM EST

Viewers should be able to vote her out.

The show would be much better without her. Either just have Randy and Simon or get someone else who is sane.

Gwen Sun, Mar 26, 2006 at 08:19 PM EST

If Paula wants to give some asinine comment (I wouldn't call it a critique) after someone's performance and Fox wants to waste that air time, more power to them and her. But, should she interrupt Simon's comments? Heck, NO! She drove me nuts Tuesday night. Do they think this is good for the show? Or, does she actually think Simon has nothing good to say? Come on! I honestly think that they should ONLY let her nod if she liked the performance and shake her head if she didn't. Lord knows she'd black herself out because she'd be nodding all night.

Babs Sun, Mar 26, 2006 at 05:34 PM EST

Amen to all of you that share the message to Idol of time to move along Paula! Trade seats or something. Let Simon be the 1st to critique! Quit the stupid remarks and back talk to Simon....for ratings....NOT!

Ron Sat, Mar 25, 2006 at 11:50 PM EST

I think it's ironic that Paula and Randy alway accuse Simon of being rude. The reality is that he sits quietly and lets them make their comments and then they interupt and yell at him when it's his turn. It seems to me that he could teach them a thing or two, especially Paula. They should get rid of her and replace her with someone interesting. I would suggest Olivia Newton John or Tina Turner, someone with real talent.

Barb Sat, Mar 25, 2006 at 07:42 PM EST

I seriously believe Paula is on some serious meds these days. It's sad to say but this show is all Paula has and she needs to get her act together. She never gives any constructive criticism (all of them rarely do unless Ryan asks for some)so how are any of the performers going to improve without it? I think more people are watching to see her train wreck, so maybe its all for ratings?

donner Sat, Mar 25, 2006 at 06:42 PM EST

Paula isn't going anywhere- Simon loves her (told Larry King that the other night) and since he's a huge part of the show, if he likes her, she'll stay...But its too bad, cause she's a complete FLAKE and IDIOT who cannot construct a simple sentence...I can't stand her and I'll often mute her, or change the channel when she's on...

Mike Sat, Mar 25, 2006 at 02:09 PM EST

She's been inebriated on that show since the beginning of season 4. And I love the ongoing trainwreck! Keep it up Paula!

Ricki Lewis Sat, Mar 25, 2006 at 10:08 AM EST

I don't know whether she is a brilliant act or a trainwreck. All I know is she was a washed-up has been until this show so if she's smart she'd get her act together and stop ogling boys young enough to be her sons.

molla Sat, Mar 25, 2006 at 01:29 AM EST

I'm going to comment as the lone person that thinks Paula is fun to have on the show. I really don't like how she interrupts Simon, but for snark-value alone, Paula is worth keeping on AI. She is the wacky neighbor. She is the comic relief. I always get a few good laughs at her.

JJ Sat, Mar 25, 2006 at 01:21 AM EST

I agree that Paula is rude and annoying when she interrupts Simon. However, her comments are as repetitive as Randy's and even Simon's. The only comments Randy makes about their voices is when he says that it was "pitchy" or "just awwright for me". Not exactly constructive or thoughtful. Simon tends to use the same adjectives, but the only thing that separates him from the other two is his use of analogies, some of which make absolutely no sense. Bottom line: All three of them tend to be predictable!

Ernesto Sat, Mar 25, 2006 at 01:11 AM EST

My problem with Paula started when she favored ACE this season, I mean is she deaf???????? Has anybody noticed how Simon tells at least three different people they are the best in the competition?????? I don´t think any of these judges make cohesive statements and that is why i don´t understand anybody voting based on their critique. Randy calls the girls "DUDE" for Pete´s sake!!! The solution would be to lose the judges, I think American people are smart enough to decide who can sing and who can´t without the need of those three ranting about how pathetic or not the kids are. We are talking about a public that made Britney Spears a big star selling more than 12 million albums of her first album and she CAN NOT sing to save her life.
Anyway, good luck and thanks for the article!!!!

R & R Fri, Mar 24, 2006 at 10:16 PM EST

Paula is okay but she seems to say the same things over and over. It is kind of annoying when she interrupts Simon. I wish she would stop showing so much cleavage because my 8-year-old son does watch the show too. After all, it is a family show!!

cj Fri, Mar 24, 2006 at 09:10 PM EST

please get her of the show.SHE IS USELESS

Nancy Fri, Mar 24, 2006 at 08:16 PM EST

I want to start an online petition to get Fox to take Paula off the air. However, being Canadian, Fox isn't going to listen to my opinion, so I'm hoping some brilliant American with great taste will do it. I don't know if Paula is on drugs or booze or what, but she never gives Simon a chance to say anything. Her critiques don't make any sense ("You are needed in this competition"--what the hell is that supposed to mean?)
Her crap about Taylor's dancing was just a case in point. Simon is right, it is a singing competition and not a dancing competition. Who cares about his dance moves? How is he going to sound on the radio? Maybe the best thing to do would be to bring in the guest judges again. Paula seemed more well-mannered when they were on. Plus we'd get fresh perspectives instead of "Yeah! You did your thing!" and "You look amazing."

Dylan Fri, Mar 24, 2006 at 08:14 PM EST

I think 'Roel' has made the only inteelligent suggestion which was to just cancel the whole stupid show. It boggles my mind how some people find entertainment value from such garbage. This is television's lowest point and will only sink lower until reality tv goes away.

lauren Fri, Mar 24, 2006 at 06:51 PM EST

paula is fine. people should get off her back. so she's loopy, so what?
she should stop interupting tho, that is just rude.

brent Fri, Mar 24, 2006 at 06:30 PM EST

I could not agree more. Even though Randy's verbal tics and statements are painful to watch, he at least comments on the actual SINGING. Paula is left to either copy what Randy says or to blather on about how "wonderful they look" or to let them know that they are a "precious little gift." Who needs this crap? These people aren't here for a self-esteem boost, they want to get better!

And I CANNOT watch her when an "attractive male" is singing. You can actually see her ovaries start to enflame. We all know you've had a string of loveless marriages Paula(Emilio, that one gay guy...) but please try to keep your hormones out of the criticism process.

Matt Fri, Mar 24, 2006 at 05:50 PM EST

Paula has GOT TO GO!! She is almost getting too much to watch AI at all anymore. Can't stand her incoherant ravings and interrupting Simon (the only guy there who knows what he is doing) I was REALLY hoping that Abdul would be fired after the "Cory-gate" incident - but no such luck. When are the producers of "AI" going to realize she has GOT TO GO!!!!

meg Fri, Mar 24, 2006 at 05:31 PM EST

When Paula is so obviously hopped up on something, liquid or otherwise, she's drooling into her own over exposed cleavage, its time for an intervention.

brandonk Fri, Mar 24, 2006 at 05:26 PM EST

I agree with switching Paula and Randy's seats. Having Simon go first would be nice too, except that he's the climax, and having to listen to Randy and Paula after Simon would make them sound even stupider.

lei Fri, Mar 24, 2006 at 05:10 PM EST

"Straight Up" is how Paula orders her drinks. This year its too obvious, takes away from the show, and even this year's contestants look impatient with her as she slurs incoherently.
They should put her on a 'medical leave of absence" and find someone sober.

Tiffany Fri, Mar 24, 2006 at 04:52 PM EST

I know it's unlikely that he'd ever agree to do it, but I'd love to see Barry Manilow replace Paula or Randy as a judge. I've never been the biggest Barry Manilow fan, but her really impressed me when he coached the contestants this week. He gave all the potential Idols such great advice-- very honest & constructive (and the man really seems to know what he's talking about). It'd be a nice change from Paula's incoherent blathering and Randy's "aiirite...Dawg" nonsense.

roel Fri, Mar 24, 2006 at 04:03 PM EST

just cancel the whole damned show altogether! get rid of them all in one fell swoop!

Jeannie Fri, Mar 24, 2006 at 04:00 PM EST

Did anyone take a close look at her eyes? That girl has been ingesting something!

ftworthbabe Fri, Mar 24, 2006 at 03:57 PM EST

Instead of Janice Dickenson, let's bring back FAYE DUNAWAY- so she can say again-- "DON'T CALL US, WE'LL CALL YOU!"

Brian Fri, Mar 24, 2006 at 03:26 PM EST

Paula and Randy, but mostly Paula, are jsut annoying and have no reat insight. Randy thinks if he punctuates his sentences with "Dawg" that he is really saying something. I think in many ways he is just the "token black guy" which does both him and the audience a disservice. And Paula seems to make the whole goal of her presence to slop sugar on the contestants and send daggers at Simon. At least with Simon there is actual criticism, when you are good you are good, when you are bad you are bad, when you are mediocre you are mediocre and he doesn't mince words he just lays it out there. My idea is get rid of randy and paula and have rotating guest judges every week.

H Fri, Mar 24, 2006 at 03:08 PM EST

I think Randy and Paula should switch seats with two random audience members, who would likely have more coherent and relevant things to say.

dma69 Fri, Mar 24, 2006 at 02:57 PM EST

Paula does seem more loopy this year. She must've borrowed some of that "bliss" from Daniel Franco of Project Runway.

Joe C Fri, Mar 24, 2006 at 02:55 PM EST

I've said it before; Paula should be replaced by Debbie Gibson. She like Paula is a very POSITIVE person, but unlike Paula, despite the fact that her music was just as lame as the Straight Up Girl, at least Debbie could sing. It'll never happen, though; Fox won't mess with the chemistry.

Elizabeth Fri, Mar 24, 2006 at 02:24 PM EST

My opinion is that the producers push her to act that way so everyone keeps talking about it.

Brad Fri, Mar 24, 2006 at 02:14 PM EST

I think it's time for Paula to go and be replaced with Janice Dickinson !! She is, and always will be, the ultimate reality tv judge.

stephanie Fri, Mar 24, 2006 at 02:03 PM EST

Paula was never a good singer. She was too nasaly for my taste. She is just there to comfort the kids. Simon and Randy know what they are talking about, but does Simon sing? I don't think so.

Steven Fri, Mar 24, 2006 at 02:01 PM EST

I think Paula and Randy should switch seats. Heaven forbid the woman has to formulate an opinion of her own.

lucilia Fri, Mar 24, 2006 at 01:59 PM EST

Paula has been loopy since day 1. Actually I'd say this season she's been the "most" normal so far. Anyone who has ever watched the show knows to just ignore Paula's comments.

nessa Fri, Mar 24, 2006 at 01:55 PM EST

I want to punch her in the face when she interupts Simon. She is so obnoxious it drives me nuts. I have never understoofd why she is a judge on a "singing" competition - she was never that good of a singer..."rush. rush" anyone?

daisyj Fri, Mar 24, 2006 at 01:55 PM EST

Well no, now that you've taken the tranquilizer gun option off the table...

Maya Fri, Mar 24, 2006 at 01:47 PM EST

Agreed! Switch Paula and Randy. That way, Paula can't just repeat what Randy said, *and* she can't interrupt Simon. The only time she was vaguely coherent was when she went first at some point this finals season. I do enjoy her seal clapping though -- it's like she just painted her nails and wants to keep them from touching anything. Or she learned how to clap at Sea World. I missed the melon-moth-cornflake episode -- is it somewhere online? I think she's utterly useless as an actual judge but great as a morale-booster, which, when you're Bucky, is nice to have around.

Ann Fri, Mar 24, 2006 at 01:44 PM EST

I have to say that on Wednesday, when Kevin and Bucky were the final two, Paula gave the most lucid and meaningful speech she has ever made on Idol. But, other than that, she is incredibly annoying whenever Simon speaks. So, yes, please move her.

Kim Fri, Mar 24, 2006 at 01:41 PM EST

I completely agree. Paula has been on my nerves for the last few seasons and especially this one. Every time Simon gives his opinion and Paula doesn't like it, she rudely interrupts him and acts confrontational. It is annoying, unprofessional, and downright rude!! PLEASE replace her with somebody who has their head screwed on right and can give an honest critique.
