Dane Cook is comedy's future

9737__cook_l Soon, there'll be no escaping from Dane Cook. HBO has signed a multi-project deal with the chart-busting comedian (the details of which are here and here), with provisions for a concert special, a documentary series called Tourgasm (about the college tour Cook and three stand-up colleagues undertook last spring), and a half-hour comedy series. Most intriguing is a set of shorts he'll create for downloading to iPods or cell phones. (At iTunes, Cook's Comedy Central concert has surpassed shows like Lost to become the service's most popular downloaded show.) ''His career is about to take off,'' HBO chief Chris Albrecht tells Variety, ''and he's the kind of talent that can exist in several spaces.''

No, dude, his career has already taken off. Cook was going to be huge in the tiny-screen world with or without HBO (just check out his multimedia-heavy website); you're just along for the ride.

I had the misfortune of seeing Cook on Jimmy Kimmel. Like his act, he was about as funny as chemo.

He's a hack and a joke thief, but not even one with the good sense to steal decent material.

terri Fri, Jul 11, 2008 at 12:21 PM EST

Dane Cook is crap and needs to learn to pick up his dogs crap too

Steven Wed, May 28, 2008 at 04:50 PM EST

Take a look at the few tools that "love" Dane Cook. They have the intelligence of a toad.

The thing I hate the most about him is how fake he is. What, there is nothing contriversial going on in his life? It's all, constant, non-stop GOOF upon GOOF upon GOOFY stupid human stuff. Yeah, it CAN be funny once in a while but, the whole hour and a half of just goof??? He has no problems, complaints, disagreements with what's going on in the world??? That's called fake.

Motley Crue was credited with having the first power ballad with "Home Sweet Home" and at the time, they caught a bunch of shiit from their fans for it. Which lasted all but two seconds once they heard the song because Motley was supposed to be "heavy" all the time. Tommy Lee said in an interview about that....."Yeah, it's cool to be rocking hard 'n heavy but, if you're that guy ALL the time then you're just fake and not real".

It's just that how the hell does this fake, one sided dude sell out an arena????

Steve Sun, May 18, 2008 at 02:02 PM EST

I am so glad I see so many people hate him too. I saw there is a new myspace page called danecookssucks.com. No other comedian has the amount of negative press this guy has. You won't see artielangesucks.com. Think kids, why is it only him?? Do a Google search if you don't believe me.

I think what got him big is his early success with the college crowd which basically a bunch of kids recently thrust out into the world with NO world experience. He's probably one of the very first comedians live they have ever saw so they ASSUME all comedians are like that. I would put up anything Eddie Murphy has done live against Dane Cook. Dane doesn't know what a freakin punchline is. He just rambles on and on.

I found people that posted YouTube videos of this one guy on MadTV who does a great impression of Dane on stage. Do a search for it.

The complaint I think we all have is how the hell does this tool sell out the arenas??? Only answer I have is the kiddies he caters to.

guys, dane cook is a comic genious, he knows what our generation thinks is funny just like comedians from teh past did but he is not the FUNNIEST of all comedians, as someone stated down a few comments, watch demetri martin, he is funny as hell with inteligence. I dont hate Dane Cook, but his career wont last that long, I mean look at the Blue Collar people jeff foxworthy, larry the cable guy, Ron White, and Bill engvale, their careers were amazing when they were popular for about 2 or 3 years, look at them now, nothing....you never hear abotu them at all. SO in conclusion, DC fans, enjoy his limited fame, and haters, just wait a few years and then start complaining about the next dane cook to come

ThomasS Thu, Dec 13, 2007 at 02:39 PM EST

The first time I heard DC I was in shock. His humor is High School locker room BS. I could not believe people think he's funny. It must be: - young girls, - mass hysteria - great publicist - lower generational standards (my bet)

he make Erkle look like Jerry Lewis.

PigKnipples Sat, Sep 29, 2007 at 02:16 PM EST

Dane Cook is an embarrassment to 'real' comedians, and should be ashamed of himself to even walk onto a stage where many deserving performers who had true comedic talent stood, all without the crutch of My-Space and pre-pubescent girls.

jamie Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 01:49 AM EST

Oddly enough, all the Dane Cook supporters can only talk about what a great guy he is personally (maybe true, but irrelevant) or how popular he is. There's not much to say about his comedy strangly enough...

The better Joe Thu, Jun 7, 2007 at 07:48 PM EST

dane cook is awesome fuckers
slapstick comedy mixed in with a tad of verbal is really a prime combo, so shut up!

To Dane's #1 fan...you are a tool. Dane Cook is horrible. He is a performer, not a comedian...big difference. Does he even tell jokes? Seems like he just acts everything out in a ridiculous manner and gets laughs for that. Try watching someone like Demetri Martin, then you will see some intelligent comedy.

Joe Mon, Jan 15, 2007 at 10:32 PM EST

He sucks.

DaneCookIsAnUnfunnyLoser Mon, Jan 8, 2007 at 11:19 PM EST

Mitch Hedburg is funnier than alleged comedian Dane Cook and he is dead. Dane Cook is the unfunniest comedian ever. If I had to vote for the best comedian ever and the choice was between Dane Cook and Carrot Top I would have to think long and hard and then I would probably shoot myself in the head. I love peoples "proof" that he is funny based on how many albums he sold. That is like saying Britney Spears is a good singer because she sold a ton of albums. Mass sales are generally driven by a cycle of media hype that makes every easily influenced person believe that they must get album X or like comedian Y. If you think Dane Cook is the future of comedy then the state of comedy in America is in worse shape than I thought.

brett Thu, Oct 5, 2006 at 11:33 AM EST

he's horrible

Plymouth Jim Mon, Sep 25, 2006 at 09:17 PM EST

Hype, in love with himself, delivering to a generation reared on subpar work of Sandler, et al. Can't carry Dave Attel's jock.

Charlene Ruark Wed, Mar 29, 2006 at 02:56 PM EST

I first heard of Dane last year when my daughter, Shelby, was diagnosed with cancer. During this very difficult time she would listen to his tapes and laugh hysterically even when she was very sick, she absolutely loved him. We arranged for her to attend one of his shows and meet him, but she was rushed to the hospital with a high fever and could not make it. When Dane found out he called her on the phone. He became very friendly with her and called a few times to talk to her. He sent her a clip of his show in Boston where he dedicated her favorite skit "Koolaide" to her by saying "This one's for you, Shelby". She was absolutely thrilled, he brought her so much joy and we will always be grateful. We lost our beautiful daughter on March 15, 2005. Dane paid her the ultimate tribute by dedicating his CD "Retaliation" to her life (in the inside jacket). So, whatever anyone thinks of him, I can vouch that he his an unbelievable guy who brought a smile to our angel's face. Thank You Dane.

Dane's #1 Fan Wed, Mar 15, 2006 at 07:40 PM EST

You are all stupid! Okay not all off you said dane was bad, and you people are smart and know comedy, the rest of you SUCK! Dane Cook IS a comedy god, he is the funniest stand-up comedian ever, and is not "over-rated" at all! People talk about him and love him so much because he is that good! You dumba$$es wouldn't know comedy if it kick your ugly faces in! Your all dumb, and worthless! Dane rocks, and let me think how many times has he sold out shows? How many people bought his CDs? Oh thats right MILLIONS! So you're going to say that ALL OF THOSE PEOPLE ARE WRONG! Oh and at what place was his new CD on the charts? OOOOOOOOOOOOH, #4! Suck on that losers! To those of you that like and support Dane Cook, you are smart people and you rock!

Chris McVetta Fri, Mar 3, 2006 at 11:07 PM EST

I call this the "Ryan Reynolds syndrome."

The need by Hollywood to shoehorn "the next big thing" into the role of "the future of comedy."

It doesn't matter if he is actually funny or not - he just needs to be pie-in-the-sky marketing tool for La-La-Land.

Still confused-? Look up David Spade in your Comedy Dictionary (Look no further than "Joe Dirt" for further evidence...).

Mike in Moncton Fri, Mar 3, 2006 at 04:09 PM EST

If even a fraction of 1% of the public like Cook's stuff enough to buy it or buy into it, he'll be a success. That doesn't mean he's any good. But it does mean he's successful, and good to that fraction of people.

No good to me though.

Todd Fri, Mar 3, 2006 at 08:33 AM EST

I don't find Dane amusing, because I used to write stuff like he performs, and the writings would get canned, and if I spoke those words I got in even more trouble. All the adults around me suppressed and stifled me, and it bothers me that someone can get rich off of what got me detention.

Thad Thu, Mar 2, 2006 at 10:10 PM EST

Cook is the worst. Is this just another hype wagon? Who is diggin this stuff, frat boys? 'Waiting' didn't win any laugh awards. Sat Night Live was not funny. He must have an amazing publicist. Pay her well. Come back next year and hopefully no one will no who he is.

Jamie Thu, Mar 2, 2006 at 06:11 PM EST

I really like Dane's work, ever since I saw him on Letterman in the late '90's (yeah, back when I was in high school.) His act then was all about his childhood: toys and games (like Simon), and his love of Karate (thwarted by his "cheap old man" father, who sent him "to a free aerobics class and told me it was Kar-a-te." His success is well deserved, he worked hard on it. (That website? That was one of his first major purchases, he sunk his time and money into promotion and accesability. Guess who I, and many others, heard about Myspace from? That's right, Dane!)

jacquard! Thu, Mar 2, 2006 at 05:00 PM EST

Rock on Fatima!

Fatima Thu, Mar 2, 2006 at 04:07 PM EST

I will never give in to Cook's brand of unintelligent frat boy humor. Seeing my high school be swept under his spell has left me feeling scared for the future of comedy.

jojo Thu, Mar 2, 2006 at 03:00 PM EST

Why are you guys knocking on Maria and Sven? They don't like Dane Cook, big effin' deal.

He's funny but I don't think he's a comic god. There are funnier people out there. He is getting slightly overexposed lately though.

Just my own opinion... I hope no one jumps down my throat about it. :)

Maria Thu, Mar 2, 2006 at 02:19 PM EST

Maria its ok, many of us mature way too quickly, I bet in grade school you were finishing your PhD in how to watch paint dry.

I am guess while it was drying you had some paint chips too, might have affected your sense of humor.

brandonk Thu, Mar 2, 2006 at 01:56 PM EST

I've seen several recordings of Dane Cook's comedy bits and watched his SNL show, and I thought he was hilarious. He's so energetic and raunchy, but in a goofy way. It helps that he's pretty cute, too.

dma69 Thu, Mar 2, 2006 at 01:38 PM EST

I think he's funny. Love his Burger King drive-thru routine from Comedy Central.

Tiff Thu, Mar 2, 2006 at 01:01 PM EST

No Maria, I wouldn't think that you are old. I'd think that you have no sense of humor!!!

maria Thu, Mar 2, 2006 at 12:05 PM EST

I agree!

I think Dane Cook is awful and over-rated. And,I'm sure some of you are thinking, "Oh for shame, Maria must be 70 years old. Everyone under 30 like Dane Cook." Please, don't make me choke on my McVomit. I'm 25, his target demographic.

I'd rather watch paint dry.

Shawn Thu, Mar 2, 2006 at 11:47 AM EST

Sven you must be really old and maybe you have a different kind of sense of humor, like the days of Andy Griffin Show or even older.

I am sure that for you to hate on Dane Cook this much and not respect the amount he has accomplished to this point, you must be a real bore....Well no bother, one less out of the millions that will be watching the Dane Cook specials on HBO. I am sure we won't miss you much.

Sven Thu, Mar 2, 2006 at 11:06 AM EST

I don't believe I said worst comic ever; only in the last thirty plus years. I can think of least four comics in the history of that noble profession who would rate lower.

Tiff Thu, Mar 2, 2006 at 10:56 AM EST

Are you kidding me. The worst comic ever. You must have not seen him live. I saw him in Boston a few months ago, when he flew in especially to come to the Comics Come Home show. His set was a surprise and only a few minutes long. I laughed more in that short time than I did all night.
I'm not the only one who thinks so either. Is CD has gone multi-platinum. All his shows sell out in a matter of hours. (Both shows at the TD Bank North Garden, sold out in less than an hour)
Obviously you have no sense of humor!!!

Mike in Moncton Thu, Mar 2, 2006 at 10:41 AM EST

Agreed, Sven.

The words that come to mind when I hear Dane Cook's name are "over-rated".

Sven Thu, Mar 2, 2006 at 10:29 AM EST

I don't know that there has been a worse comedian to come on the scene in over thirty years. If Dane Cook is the future of comedy, let me off this planet.
