Which Oscar movies do you still need to see?

Feb 27, 2006, 04:16 PM | by Gary Susman

Categories: Oscars 2006

15559__trans_lWith less than a week to go before the Oscars, you may still need to log a few hours at the multiplex (or, more likely, the art house) to cram for the big night. After all, when Reese Witherspoon picks up her Best Actress trophy, how can you shout, ''Felicity Huffman wuz robbed!'' if you haven't seen Huffman's performance in Transamerica (pictured)?

To help you plan your last-minute moviegoing schedule, we're reprinting the list of 25 movies you need to see by Oscar night that EW drew up a couple weeks before the nominations. As it turns out, we were overly optimistic about a couple of longshots near the bottom of the list. (Caché was ruled ineligible for foreign language film; Paradise Now should have been there instead. And I'm still disappointed that Upside of Anger and Shopgirl got ignored.)

Still, this is a list of great movies you should see anyway. In fact, I'm ashamed to admit there are a couple on the list I still haven't seen, so if I duck out of the office for the rest of the afternoon to camp out at the theater, it's all work-related, I swear.

(Click the jump for EW's list of 25 movies to see before the Oscars.)

Which of the films on the list below will you make a point to watch before Sunday's Oscar show?

Brokeback Mountain
Good Night, and Good Luck
Crash
Capote
Munich
Walk the Line
Cinderella Man
Syriana
A History of Violence
The Constant Gardener
Transamerica
North Country
Memoirs of a Geisha
Pride & Prejudice
Match Point
Mrs. Henderson Presents
King Kong
Hustle & Flow
The Squid and the Whale
Junebug
The Upside of Anger
The 40-Year-Old Virgin
Caché (Hidden)
Shopgirl
The Chronicles of Narnia

All i have to say point blank to the academy is this, the best film that was made last year was A history of Violence. And they gave it one nomination.

Brad Tue, Feb 28, 2006 at 07:47 PM EST

Of the nominees, I still need to see Cinderella Man, Walk The Line, and Pride & Prejudice. Luckily they are all out on DVD, so I can get them all in this week. Would have liked to have seen Paradise Now, but it came out on a busy weekend and then it was gone, so I missed out on that one.

The 40 Year Old Virgin should have been nominated for Best Picture, Best Actor, and Catherine Keener should have been nominated for Best Supporting Actress for Virgin instead of Capote. She was good in Capote but her part was underwritten and I didn't get a real sense of a performance from her. But in Virgin she played a real character, flawed and sexy and insecure and very real. Tooo bad the Academy is too dumb to understand just how hard comedy is to do. Anyone who's ever tried to tell a joke that just got blank stares knows how hard it is. In a better world, 40 Year Old Virgin would rule.

crash (excellent), constant gardener, walk the line, junebug (amy adams is wonderful in this) are all on dvd so it should make life easier!

i would recommend people to see brokeback on the big screen though - the cinematography is fabulous.

Martin Tue, Feb 28, 2006 at 12:00 PM EST

Cache wasn't eligible because though the film's in French, it is not French - it's Austrian. Therefore Austria could not submit it because Foreign Film submissions must be spoken in the language native to the country.
The Upside of Anger sooo should have been up for Best Actress, Supporting Actor, Screenplay, and Picture. The layers on the film, the beautiful, caring, raw performances...I can't get over it.

Erik Tue, Feb 28, 2006 at 11:53 AM EST

Luckily Brokeback came near my area and I got to see it twice last week. Transamerica is also playing next week, which is a big surprise.

Beth Tue, Feb 28, 2006 at 11:45 AM EST

Why was Cache ineligible?

Dan Tue, Feb 28, 2006 at 11:35 AM EST

I have seen just about everything. The only ones I want to see, but won't since they are not playing in my area are "Paradise Now" and "Mrs. Henderson Presents."

Shelly Tue, Feb 28, 2006 at 11:28 AM EST

I've seen 18 of them and plan on seeing another 4 of them by Sunday. At the risk of voicing an unpopular opinion based on some of the recent entries, I don't think Reese can even touch Felicity's performance. So she sang, big deal. I didn't see a big stretch in her abilities; she changed her hair color and frowned a few times. I saw Transamerica this past weekend and was totally touched and amazed by Felicity's portrayal. I'm sure Reese will win because there's a big love fest for her, but I'd love to see Felicity pull out a win.

Totally agree about "The New World" being an egregious omission from this list. It's nominated for cinematography, but should've gotten a whole lot more. People will still be thinking about this one many years from now.

Love "Brokeback," and really pulling for it and Heath.

Thought "Constant Gardener" and "History of Violence" were much better movies than "Capote," "Crash" and "Good Night..." and should've made the top 5 instead.

cj Tue, Feb 28, 2006 at 10:06 AM EST

you guys over do it sometimes felicity was not that good

Nick Tue, Feb 28, 2006 at 08:41 AM EST

Where the heck is Terence Malick's _The New World_?!?

Kate Tue, Feb 28, 2006 at 04:30 AM EST

I'd like to see Goodnight and Good Luck and Walk the Line. That one should be out soon here in Hong Kong.

NYGuy Tue, Feb 28, 2006 at 12:03 AM EST

I've seen them all--Brokeback is the best.

Rahul Mon, Feb 27, 2006 at 07:41 PM EST

I've seen 20 of these movies. Top among the remaining: Match Point

celebrity wonk Mon, Feb 27, 2006 at 07:39 PM EST

I'd love to see more of these, but problably have time for only one. It will likely be "Match Point." I won't have to see "Brokeback" before the show. It will win and be out (no pun intended) after the show.

Melanie Mon, Feb 27, 2006 at 06:58 PM EST

I've seen 13 of these, including the best movie noms. Pulling for Brokeback Mt. still. A Constant Gardner and A History of Violence were so overrated. The 40-year-old Virgin was the funniest movie of the year, plus it was sweet and raunchy--how can you pull that off? Amazing. I want to try to see Syriana but may not make it. Oh, saw North Country yesterday. What a dark, depressing movie. Yes, it made me think, but it was so over-the-top depressing that I felt horrible just watching it. Blah.

djm Mon, Feb 27, 2006 at 06:32 PM EST

I have kids, so the only ones I've seen are Brokeback Mtn. and Crash. I wanted to see Transamerica, but haven't been able to yet. I also wanted to see Reese in Walk, but haven't yet. I am SO SO SO glad that Upside of Anger was ignored - that movie was horrid, made so by Joan Allen (whom I normally love).

Paige Mon, Feb 27, 2006 at 06:30 PM EST

I'm sneaking Capote in on Friday.

I've seen most of what I've wanted to see, but not Cache, not that that will affect my Oscar telecast outcome.

Having seen Transamerica, I wouldn't say Felicity was robbed. She was great, as always, but Reese was even better.

Josh Mon, Feb 27, 2006 at 05:48 PM EST

The only movie I have yet to see is Transamerica. It hasn't been playing anywhere near me, so I haven't been able to. I am ready for the Oscars, but I want some things to happen that definitely won't. ie: Keira Knightly for Best Actress, Capote for Best Picture, Amy Adams for Best Supporting Actress and History of Violence for Screenplay

Norm Mon, Feb 27, 2006 at 05:23 PM EST

No way! Reese had a lovely authenticy that Felicity could never achieve. She was working WAY too hard, whereas Reese gave a complex, though effortless performance. She definitely deserves the trophy that I'm sure she will win.
Keira Kneightly was wonderful as well. She reminds me of Audrey Hepburn.

johnathan Mon, Feb 27, 2006 at 05:20 PM EST

Still gotta see North Country, but I think it's on video now so it shouldn't be problem. Everything else is already under my belt.

Chris Mon, Feb 27, 2006 at 05:13 PM EST

I've only seen 8 as well, 4 of them nominees for Best Picture. I'm sure I'll see the rest of these movies all in good time, but the one that's killing me is Munich! I live near a modestly populated city, and Munich is showing nowhere! I hear it's coming to DVD, but I doubt it will be soon enough (unless, by some miracle, it comes out tomorrow).

The theatres do this to me almost every time! I always try to see all 5 Best Picture nominees before the Oscars, and there's always that one that slips under my radar. Happened with Gangs of New York, too.

Oh well. Of the 4 I've seen, Capote was the best. I loved that movie. It beats the other 4 on this list I've seen too (Walk the Line, King Kong, Hustle & Flow, and The 40-Year-Old Virgin).

Oh yeah, it DEFINITELY beats The 40-Year-Old Virgin...

Paul U. Mon, Feb 27, 2006 at 05:12 PM EST

i have seen 15 of them...i have to say, people should have given more love to Transamerica. it was MUCH better than Capote, Munich, or Good Night and Good Luck. but of course it was too entertaining to be a Best picture nominee...not boring enough. Reese was good but Felicity rules!

gina Mon, Feb 27, 2006 at 05:09 PM EST

I really enjoyed The constant Gardener, if you haven't seen it, I definitely recommend it! I hoping to catch the 40-year-old virgin this week.

Kerin Mon, Feb 27, 2006 at 04:51 PM EST

The only ones I haven't seen are Munich, North Country, King Kong, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Caché, and The Chronicles of Narnia. I doubt I will see any of those before Sunday. The only one I regret not seeing is The 40-Year-Old Virgin.

mike Mon, Feb 27, 2006 at 04:30 PM EST

I have visited the local arthouse a lot lately and rented videos. I have only seen eight of the 25.
