Mariah Carey's next (gulp) movie role

Feb 28, 2006, 10:55 AM | by Michael Slezak

Categories: Deals, Film, Music

113027__mariah_l Do Mariah Carey and movies belong together? Apparently, producer Lee Daniels (Monster's Ball) thinks so, as he's cast the pop star in the indie drama Tennessee, in which she'll play a waitress who tries to locate her long-lost father after her brother is diagnosed with leukemia. Daniels told Variety that he'd never seen Carey's 2001 debacle Glitter (well, duh!), but that her recent musical comeback and her work in 2002's Wisegirls convinced him she was right for the part.

(I would weigh in with an opinion, but my therapist has advised me not to -- Glitter flashbacks and all. You understand, right?)

So I leave it you, PopWatchers? What do you think? Does Carey deserve a second chance at movie stardom, or is this an ill-advised decision that'll put her resurgent singing career at risk?

I fail to see how this concept will work. All her music sounds the same.Ditto with her look..always over-done in diva fashion. I find it hard to believe she will be able to dress down and pull it off. I am sure the world will wait with baited breath to find out.

angie domino Sat, Jan 5, 2008 at 06:56 PM EST

yes she does!!! ive seen both of those movies and i own them both they are really good....i love glitter and wise girls...shes also in the bachlor and shes good in that movie too!!1

Michael Wed, Sep 26, 2007 at 06:34 AM EST

Unfortunately I aint seen Wise Girls yet but told it is quirky and sooo classy. I loved Glitter especially when she sings to Max Beesley back stage when the other lady tries to take all the credit.

alyson Tue, Aug 28, 2007 at 03:22 PM EST

its killing, what is the name of the song that mariah carey is dancing to in the club in the beginning of the movie, i believe she is leopard..

Bailey Fri, Aug 17, 2007 at 03:51 PM EST

Yes, Glitter sucked. But I saw WiseGirls and was impressed. Mariah's character in that was def entertaining. Give her the right role and she's not that bad. But only with the right role. Don't give that girl anything too deep, cause she's not winning an Oscar anytime soon.

karissa Tue, May 8, 2007 at 11:50 PM EST

patricia Mon, Mar 20, 2006 at 05:57 PM EST

1. Mariah is not fat, she's thick.
2. Mariah is a performer - performers sing, dance and act!
3. It's an indie film.

Relax. Have a shot.

NIECEY Sat, Mar 4, 2006 at 04:04 PM EST

YALL JUST NEED TA STOP HATIN ON MY HOMEGUH MARIAH JUST CUZ SHE DOIN IT BIG AND SHYT U TRIFLIN TRICKZ DON'T NEED TA BE TALKIN CUZ U AIN'T GOT SHYT ON ME AND MARIAH SO GET IT STRAIGHT B4 I SET U STRAIGHT

The only question I have is will she be naked? I would love to see those big assed tittes!!!

Faith Tue, Feb 28, 2006 at 11:31 PM EST

Oh, for the love of all that is holy!!! Please!! Spare us the pain of Mariah Carey trying to act! Glitter, hello??!!! Plus, someone introduce to that girl a gym, or personal trainer, or something. She keeps getting bigger, but her clothes don't. Disgusting!!

THETRUTH Tue, Feb 28, 2006 at 10:06 PM EST

To be honest i dont like putting people down at all. Maybe she cant act maybe she can, who knows. All i have to say is everyone though MADDONA in evita was a great performance. I though Maria perfomance in Glitter was like watching gone with the wind compared to evita!

S Tue, Feb 28, 2006 at 07:25 PM EST

When you can't act then you can't act, what makes the director think she'll be a good actress in his movie?

djm Tue, Feb 28, 2006 at 06:41 PM EST

Concentrate on losing her back fat and implants - TOO FUNNY!!!! I think she should stick to small bit-parts. Although I'd love to see her pull a Charleze Theron and get all skanked out. We all know she'd never do it though.

madeline7 Tue, Feb 28, 2006 at 05:57 PM EST

I agree with Jimmy. I've always found Mariah's acting in music videos to be pretty irritating, so whether to go see "Glitter" was never an issue. But the girl can obviously sing.

Some people compare Mariah with others, such as J.Lo : Up to and including "Out of Sight" Jennifer Lopez enjoyed good to excellent critical reviews, even when scripts were less than perfect. She was selected from many candidates to dance on "In Living Color", to portray the murdered singer Selena, and to co-star with George Clooney in "Out of Sight". Lopez wasn't a star yet; she got the parts because she was good and stood out from the rest. People who tell you otherwise are trying to rewrite history, for their own personal reasons.

I think this "triple threat" goal that many performers want to pursue is a career land mine. Jennifer's acting career started suffering when she became "J.Lo", crowded her already tight schedule making albums, and spread herself too thin. I really like some of her songs, but (jmo) she should have worked harder with a vocal coach to maximize her voice ( as Madonna did before "Evita") or made it a lower priority. Jen probably was more distracted when choosing scripts and preparing for movie roles. And, though it isn't "fair", the Bennifer fall-out probably hurt the most. Jen looks much calmer and happier now and I'm really looking forward to a couple of the films she's completed.

So it all comes down to what does someone do best, can they maintain it, and how much of their personal life are they willing to give up to wear all these different hats! If I were Mariah, I'd be careful, remembering how she had a break-down during the whole "Gliltter" debacle.

Nancy Tue, Feb 28, 2006 at 05:47 PM EST

I say give the girl another chance. Look at Madonna, great singer, not a great actress. But in smaller roles like the one in A League of Their Own, she was funny and sexy. Maybe if Mariah sticks to small feature-type roles or cameos, she'll do fine.

Joe Tue, Feb 28, 2006 at 05:08 PM EST

Look, the director's right, ya gotta see Wisegirls. Mariah CAN act; she did a good job in that movie! Go MC!

Z Tue, Feb 28, 2006 at 04:59 PM EST

In the infamous words of Whitney Houston....Awww Hell To Da Naw!!!

Jon R. Tue, Feb 28, 2006 at 04:41 PM EST

Wasn't this supposed to be Janet Jackson's role. If that's the case, then we will be seeing Mariah Carey co-star with Macauley Culkin. That will be, um, interesting.

mike Tue, Feb 28, 2006 at 04:15 PM EST

Will there be a choir of children behind her in the movie like EVERY tv appearance? I'll pass on opening night.

ed s. Tue, Feb 28, 2006 at 04:00 PM EST

Gosh, I always notice that if the topic is Mariah, there are a lot of people posting their comments. I means to say, she's popular! Movies or music, she'll make it! Next topic pls...

roxie Tue, Feb 28, 2006 at 03:53 PM EST

Good for Moo-riah! She was fun in 'Wisegirls.' But is there a movie screen big enuff to fit that supersized booty?

EP Sato Tue, Feb 28, 2006 at 03:24 PM EST

I won't touch Glitter, it's too easy. Mariah's best work as an "actress" came when she played roles that parodied her own persona. When she cameo'd on "Ally McBeal" as a beautiful diva (who couldn't get any dates because of her massive ego), it was pretty darned high-larious.
Mariah's not made for dramatic, Oscar nominated roles and should be happy with simple cameos. I understand she isn't happy ruling JUST pop music, but even Octavious Ceasar knew when to quit...

Rashaan Tue, Feb 28, 2006 at 03:08 PM EST

Okay has Mariah not learned from her past? She is not an actress. What she needs to do is just enjoy the successes of her lastest album and not do anything to take away from that (at least right now). Some people are just not meant to act and she is one of those people. I can just imagine Mariah with her chubby cheeks and cheesy breast implant as a down to earth waitress???????...LOL @ the thought...Stick to what you excel at Mariah...create a perfume, a skimpy dress line....anything except for you trying to act??..ummmm why is there film being wasted here and as I recall didn't "Wisegirls" go straight to video? I think her performance in glitter was ten times better and that in itself is not saying anything positve at all...Mariah do not embarrass yourself or in this case me...LOL...

Charlie Tue, Feb 28, 2006 at 03:00 PM EST

Now I've been a Mariah fan since day one, but I can't watch her hit the big screen again. It has nothing to do with second chances and everything to do with profession. Singers should sing, actors should act, and folks should stick to what they know how to do well (of course, leaving room for people who are really multi-talented). Mariah can sing her butt off -- let's get another album together and forget acting.

Tanya Tue, Feb 28, 2006 at 02:49 PM EST

I think Mariah deserves a chance with this film. "Glitter" wasn't great, we all know that. She didn't have THE starring role in "Wisegirls." That was Mira. She did her little cameo in "The Bachelor." So, why not star in an indie film to help get her acting career back on track...should she choose to seek a future in acting. I think this is a much better route than her starring in a feature film. I love Mariah, but she needs a little more practice in the acting field. Once, and if, she can master it, then she should go for feature films.

johnathan Tue, Feb 28, 2006 at 02:28 PM EST

Of course she deserves another chance, and it's incredibly smart of her to take a low-key, supporting role in an independent movie instead of trying to anchor a big hollywood project. If the writing and directing can come together, then the movie might be pretty okay after all. We'll have to see how it comes along, but so far, so good.

Robert Tue, Feb 28, 2006 at 02:00 PM EST

Any horrific actress can be good in a movie, depending on the script, director and how talented their co-stars are. Just watch Out of Sight to see that J-Lo isn't always that terrible, just usually. It all depends on the other people in the movie. But, if they're going to give her a part that asks her to carry the movie.....they're in trouble.

Miles Tue, Feb 28, 2006 at 01:51 PM EST

Everyone in the world deserves a second chance. Go for it... I won't be at the theatre to see it, but I wish her the best... I'm just not a big Mariah fan either way.

maria Tue, Feb 28, 2006 at 01:48 PM EST

There are so many good actresses that deserve a leading role!!!!!!!!!!
Not her!

eddie Tue, Feb 28, 2006 at 01:45 PM EST

Mariah had already captured her audience through her music. She has the talent & she had proven herself in that category. She's already a musical icon from the 90's until now.

I've seen Glitter & Wisegirls and I can say that she has a lot of potentials! Given the right script, right director, right cast & of course the right movie company that will support her all the way, she'll make it.

I think with her stature, she does not need to prove anything. She's ready to move on to another stage...

Ned Tue, Feb 28, 2006 at 01:40 PM EST

I'm sure Glitter was bad, like most, I never saw it, but I did see her in Wisegirls, and she wasn't bad in that.

Liza Tue, Feb 28, 2006 at 01:37 PM EST

Give the girl a second chance, so she can fall flat on her face once again. Maybe then people will finaly realize she has no talent

Phyllis Gabor Tue, Feb 28, 2006 at 01:33 PM EST

Um, let's see ... she played a waitress in that Mira Sorvino movie WISEGIRLS and she was motherless in GLITTER ... So this TENNESSE is basically a merging of the two.

Mariah should just disappear, her "DIVA" posing is so old and tired ... maybe she should concentrate on getting rid of her back fat and those terrible implants!

Butterfly Tue, Feb 28, 2006 at 01:33 PM EST

Lets see .. one REALLY BAD MOVIE shouldnt direct the path of your acting career. If that was the case ALOT OF ACTORS/ACTRESS would be in the unemployement line!! Mariah you go girl ... do the damn thing and show these idiots what you are made of (dont let me down please)

Eh Tue, Feb 28, 2006 at 01:27 PM EST

They keep giving Madonna chances to act... Why not let Mariah give it another try.

Howard Tue, Feb 28, 2006 at 01:27 PM EST

What a ridiculous question. Why is it a question of her getting a "second chance"? She made one bad movie (OK, a REALLY bad movie), and because of that, she should never be in another one? I guess if that were the case, then Johnny Depp shouldn't have done anything after "A Nightmare on Elm Street", or Tom Cruise after "Losin It", or Jack Nicholson after "Little Shop of Horrors".

If she makes a good movie that people go see, good for her. If not, too bad. But if she wants to be in another film and someone wants to hire her, it's not a question of what she deserves.

jon Tue, Feb 28, 2006 at 01:22 PM EST

J.Lo isn't a singer who wants to be an actress, she's was first a wannabe actress and dancer... singing, unfortunately, came later...

annie Tue, Feb 28, 2006 at 01:19 PM EST

Oh Please, no. Stick to singing Mariah

I for one, wish she would stop making music videos.

GIO Tue, Feb 28, 2006 at 12:48 PM EST

I'm Pysched to read Mariah is going to give it a try again. I actually saw wisegirls and was pleasantly surprised by her performance..She was good. she does deserve a second chance. if J.Lo and For God's sake Madonna can count themselves as actress', then Mariah should be fine

shirley Tue, Feb 28, 2006 at 12:36 PM EST

NO! She does NOT deserve a second chance at anything. she already got one for her music and we are already suffering!! She really can't act, unless it's an unintentional comedy!

Sarah Tue, Feb 28, 2006 at 12:28 PM EST

She did a decent job in Wisegirls. I think lesser actresses have been very successful in movies with a good director and a good script.

ulrika Tue, Feb 28, 2006 at 12:12 PM EST

A waitress??? A waitress??? Will she allow her roots to show? To allow herself to look less gussied up? If she is serious about embarking on a career in movies, she should start small and do non-starring roles in movies and not jump out of nowhere to a starring role. Mariah, Mariah, Mariah. I think you sorround yourself with spineless, yes people who don't have the guts or the wisdom to tell you like it is. Yes, I am talking to you too Tom.

Nicky Tue, Feb 28, 2006 at 12:01 PM EST

No stick to singing only.

All these singers....Mariah, Madonna, J-Lo..they all want to act, but its too hard to forget about their pop persona when I see them in a role. Because they are SO big in the pop world, I can't buy into them in ANY role.

stan Tue, Feb 28, 2006 at 12:01 PM EST

hiring popstars to act means more work for the editor and director. what the director can't get her to fake the editor has to clean up.
but it means big bucks in the box office for an indie film, not usually box office hits. it also means that regular listeners of mariah are probably not to frequent indie films, but they will to see her and they just might get turned on to films that touch their soul in a way that medea and her antics just cant do.

Kirkjn Tue, Feb 28, 2006 at 11:58 AM EST

Glitter opened during the week of 9/11. It could have done better, couldn't have gone much worse. I think she deserves a second chance.

nathan Tue, Feb 28, 2006 at 11:56 AM EST

Give her a shot at a small part to begin with, but NOT a starring role. It's true, there are many many talented actresses around who do not get enough good work, and it doesn't seem fair that someone will get this possibly plum role because of fame achieved in another area of entertainment. Sometimes it works out: Mos Def and Ludacris are good examples, but usually its a disaster: Madonna, DMX, Shaq, Madonna....

Jimmy Tue, Feb 28, 2006 at 11:50 AM EST

Hell NO!! Mariah Carey's "comeback" is attributed to crafty producers and a great PR campaign. She can't even act... all her videos over the years have all been the same she is incapable of conveying anything but a blank Vapid look. I turn off the TV/Radio whe she comes on why would I waste 10 bucks to see her on the big screen.

fadumo Tue, Feb 28, 2006 at 11:40 AM EST

SHE IS THE GREATEST SINGER IN THIS MOMENT,BUT THAT DOESN'T MAEN ,THAT IT'S ALL SHE CAN DO,SHE CAN BE BETTER THAN THAT.SHE DESEVES A SECOND CHANCE.WHAT WOULD OU SAY ABOUT IT? ISN'T THAT RIGHT YOU GUYS.

jon Tue, Feb 28, 2006 at 11:38 AM EST

Everybody deserves a second chance. On the other hand, with so many talented, beautiful, underemployed actresses out there, I can't imagine ignoring the pros in favor of a pop singer. Personally, I'd like to see Nia Long in a movie a little more frequently than every three years.
