Apropos of Nothing: New VW ads with Peter Stormare

Feb 24, 2006, 10:58 AM | by Gary Susman

Categories: Apropos of Nothing, Television

Over at YouTube, we spotted these advance clips of Volkswagen's hilarious new ''Un-Pimp My Ride'' commercials. (Don't know when they'll debut on TV, but you can watch the ads here, here, and here.) Not only is it a trip to hear Prison Break's Peter Stormare, in his Swedish-German accent, grunt out slightly stale slang phrases like ''drop it like it's hot!'' and ''oooh, suh-nap!'', but the ads are also a lot less creepy than the carmaker's current ''Make Friends With Your Fast'' spots, with that bizarre, demonic robot bunny.

Andrea I think that you were looking for someone to take this racial frustration out on and this is the best you found. The commercials are not making fun of African Americans or Hip-Hop they are simply making a joke on Pimp My Ride and those who feel the need to put 1000lbs of Unnesessary plastic on a cheap car. As for "YOUR" language that he is mimicking, I wouldn't refer to it as a language so much as it is a butchering of a language.

what is the woman's name in the volks wagen commercial

CM Wed, Mar 29, 2006 at 11:17 AM EST

Andrea,
Get a grip sister! These commercials are hilarious. Stop reading prejudice into everything. Find your sense of humor and get over it!

Jonatan Sun, Mar 26, 2006 at 10:22 PM EST

Anybody here who pronounes Stormares lastname correctly more than me, being from sweden? Hihi! MAN! he's simply hilarious in the ads!

miyna Sun, Mar 26, 2006 at 10:43 AM EST

I completely love these commercials. Stormare is one of my favorite actors, and watching him 'un-pimp' folks' rides has become a hobby, even more than watching X-to-tha-Z on the actual show. Andrea, seriously, lighten up. I'm a Black woman, and I and my children (12 and 15) love these commercials, and so do so many of my and their friends. I don't see anything Hip Hop about it. It's comedy/satire. If you can't laugh at it, you shouldn't be watching it. Just change the channel.

first of all, the robot thing rules...loosen up - you already know the GTi is a hella-fast car why do you need to see what it can do, you should already know...The un-pimp your ride commercials are supremely hilarious as they rip on suburban gangster wannabes pouring their WIC check into their Hondas...kitW is right - dispose of your jump-to-the gun racist defense attack mode and your vanity, the commericial is not about black people, it's about the VW and the deutschland. Where are the black people in the commercial anyways? I think that was a vain self imposition. Overall these commercials are better than any that came out during the superbowl and will do wonders for VW's GTi and all other models no matter what the demograph is. BTW, those "da da da" commercials had to of been part of the worst ad campaign ever. represent deutschland!

Dougie Mon, Mar 20, 2006 at 11:16 PM EST

who is the girl from the commercials....name??

VeeDubbin' Wed, Mar 15, 2006 at 05:06 PM EST

Frackin' hilarious commercials! I'm totally getting/finding/making one of the "My Fast" creatures to put in my black Mk3 (1998) GTi VR6 (might get a second one for my Mk2 GTi, too). And Peter Stormare does a great job in the un-pimp commercials! So far, all of the Mk5 commercials I have seen are hilarious; I'm definitely downloading any and all that I can find. Finally VW is putting out some edgy commercials! As an added bonus, they're bashing the ricer scene, too! It's a great time to drive a GTi.

As for those playing the race card: it's 2006 already, get over it. Stop trying to find racial issues hiding under every rock you see. It's a bloody car commercial, not a white power ad or some other BS. If you want to get on some carmaker's case, go trash-talk GM for their new Tahoe commercials, which clearly target the African-American demographic.

Rahul Wed, Mar 15, 2006 at 12:41 AM EST

Who is that weird german scientist girl??? I found more of her on that site at the end of the commercials. www.vwfeatures.com After you configure your car you can watch a film with her and your car in it... but the film is different when you change parts of the cars. Get the Xenon headlamps!!! It's soooo WWWEEEIIIIRRRDD!!!

Chad Mon, Mar 13, 2006 at 06:36 PM EST

Pretty sure you weren't looking to start a social dialogue here (maybe you were ...) - but, i find your comments to not only be out of line, but mostly irresponisble. Comparing VW commercials to blackface? really? poking fun at people who "pimp their rides" - freely, by the way, with their own money (or their parents') - and poking fun at slavery are comparable? seems like a bit of a stretch to me.

KitW Mon, Mar 13, 2006 at 06:30 PM EST

Andrea, you're sadly mistaken. Your hypersensitivity to the plight of "your people" do not make for a convincing arguement, when you are clearly outside the target demographic for this commercial. The pendantic accusations you punctuate with haphazard use of capitol letters to emphasize points your prose was unable to, make little sense and provide no meaningful additions to this discussion.

The VW commericals in question in fact reference the sport compact market, which tends to have little to no african american representation.

And, before your lack of cultural sensitivity burrows you any deeper, the gentlemen's "false accent" is in fact his normal tone of voice.

Gary Mon, Mar 13, 2006 at 05:35 PM EST

Andrea, you need to do a little more research before wandering off on your high horse. These commercials are not directed at Hip-Hop in the least. These commercials are poking fun at the rapidly growing Sport Compact Culture and in particular, the RICE movement (Racing Inspired Cosmetic Enhancements), which has more diversity than a New York City subway.

It seems your anger would be much better directed at supporting the real issues impacting the black community rather than defending Hip-Hop by charging at windmills.

For extra credit, please define Hip-Hop...

trop Mon, Mar 13, 2006 at 04:11 PM EST

I don't remember "hip hop" culture (?) having ever been anything but a marketing ploy for years now.

andrea lewis Sun, Mar 12, 2006 at 11:13 PM EST

THESE COMMERCIALS ARE UNBELIEVABLY DEPLORABLE! I am so sick of major corps. and foreign folk constantly bastardizing Black culture and hip hop culture just to sell products. On the one hand, I am thrilled to see that mainstream is now completely permeated with Hip-Hop culture. On the other, as a young educated sister (who happens to know what Hip-Hop really is), I am offended by these blatant misrepresentations. This commerical is to us, what wearing "black face" was to our ancestors. I can't believe that people still find this b.s. funny!!!
To all of the major corporations who think its "cool" to see faux-accented white dudes mimicking our language, do focus groups with the appropriate people and give it a rest!!

stomp Wed, Mar 8, 2006 at 01:10 PM EST

hilarious commercial. if you want to see a sobre peter stormare, check out jonathon glazer's 'birth'. lemme hear you say vvvvat?

Anthony Sun, Mar 5, 2006 at 02:18 PM EST

In the movie Bad Boys 2, starring Marin Lawrence and Will Smith, Peter Stormare play’s Alexei the guy who was not afraid of actor Jordi Molla who played Hector Juan Carlos “Johnny” Tapia. When I first saw the ads I thought man!!! That’s hilarious… I thought the fast was and is a great marketing tool to get customers familiar with the new VW vehicles, but Peter Stormare portraying himself as Xzibit with the German Engineering in the house slang certainly out weights the competition of the fast if any.

Aaron Thu, Mar 2, 2006 at 01:01 AM EST

I saw "Constantine". Peter was intensely great as Satan. It's fun to see him lay on the accent, particularly since we know from his films he can turn it on or off. I like the new VW ads, tempts me to trade in my MINI...

Robyn Mon, Feb 27, 2006 at 11:00 AM EST

Y'know, I caught the end of one of these over the weekend and thought I'd lost my mind. I do love me some Stormare (am I the only one who saw "Constantine?" Probably...)

Ep Sato Mon, Feb 27, 2006 at 10:35 AM EST

Saw these during the weekend and could not stop laughing. My tivo practically had its hard drive burned out from all the times this ad was rewound and rewatched. Oh, and that VW looks super snazzy!

brandonk Fri, Feb 24, 2006 at 07:28 PM EST

Okay, those were hilarious. Ve're going to unpimp your auto!

brandonk Fri, Feb 24, 2006 at 07:25 PM EST

Yeah, usually VW has good ads, but those fast ones are weird and creepy.

Hugo Fri, Feb 24, 2006 at 05:43 PM EST

Fortunately my fast is not demonic. It just wants the slow drivers to get out of the fast lane. But if VW is trying to sell cars, scary robots with slasher-film voices isn't the way to go.

Howard Fri, Feb 24, 2006 at 01:18 PM EST

I usually prefer commercials that actually show what a product can DO, but these are hilarious. They're easily better than most of the ads that ran at the Super Bowl.

charlotte Fri, Feb 24, 2006 at 01:09 PM EST

That's a BUNNY??? And yeah...totally creepy.

mo Fri, Feb 24, 2006 at 01:01 PM EST

so happy that demonic, possessive robot thing is coming to an end!! friggin creepy.

Ep Sato Fri, Feb 24, 2006 at 12:05 PM EST

I wasn't feeling the "make friends with your fast" campaign at all. The oddball robot, the bizarro scenarios. Who is Volkswagen trying to sell these too anyway? The unpimp ads sound funny, but why not go back to the days of free rally driving courses with the purchase of a Volkswagen? That was one heck of a campaign AND it got me to buy a Jetta.

dma69 Fri, Feb 24, 2006 at 11:30 AM EST

My roommate and I kept asking "Who is that guy?". Now I realize it's the dude from Prison Break as well as Fargo.

Jill Fri, Feb 24, 2006 at 11:19 AM EST

They already debuted... saw one last night (Thursday) on ABC... I thought it was that Prison Break guy!
