'Spider-Man 3': The new suit?

Feb 24, 2006, 09:44 AM | by Gary Susman

Categories: Spider-Man 3

93141__spidey_l Superhero Hype introduces this striking new photo from Spider-Man 3, one that raises a lot of questions. According to the website, it's not a black-and-white photo; rather, it depicts a charcoal-colored Spidey costume. (There's an even bigger version of the image at MovieCityNews.)

As fans of the Spidey comics know, Spider-Man wore a black suit like this for a few years in the mid-1980s, only to learn that the costume was an alien parasite. When Peter Parker ditched it, the alien outfit found a new host, the villain Venom. Spider-Man director Sam Raimi has reportedly said that he dislikes the Venom character and would not include him in the 2007 sequel, but rumors that Topher Grace's character is, in fact, Venom have been dropped by Variety and by costar Kirsten Dunst. (Distributor Sony has kept mum regarding Grace's role.)

So what does the picture tell us? Is that Tobey Maguire in the shot, or Grace? Was Raimi planting a red herring? And is black the new red-and-blue? What say you, PopWatchers?

That was beautiful K mont! I think that you hit it on the head!

Duck Fri, May 25, 2007 at 05:37 PM EST

Well, this was definetely a good movie! But, for all the 06 posters, srry, but for it to be venom, the eyes would need to be wilder, and higher up on the head. Also with the mouth, you would be able to see the mouth, that thing is huge!!! Well, (spoiler) MJ doesn't die just yet, but like a few of you said, Harry does defending Peter.

Comment in ref. to a one made by Jimmy Mac, May 19. Hey, Jimmy-bro:I encourage you to think a bit deeper-it seems you missed some major points.I think it is the best super-hero movie, tho I'll admit I haven't seen them all and never have read the comic books.About Parkers cheesy dancing-to show how ridiculous evil is when it tries to look cool-the point=evil is not cool. This is a great message for kids in days when hollywood usually teaches that evil is cool. The end taught an amazing point that I think you missed: Forgiveness brings freedom-for the forgiven and the one forgiving. Sandman was trapped in something he never intended to be-he said so. He was being eaten up by guilt from the poor choices of his life. His greif literally melted away when Parker forgave him. The same thing was tearing up Pete, and when he forgave Flint you saw freedom come to him too. Great FX/CGI and messages except that good is stronger than evil and 3 showed the black suit stronger than the red/blue

Jimmy Mac Sat, May 19, 2007 at 11:30 AM EST

Spider-Man 3 Sucked Ass. It was quite possibly one of the worst superhero movies I've ever seen. I enjoyed Jon Cluade VanDamme's "Street Fighter" more than this. It was slapped together, too much going, and Parker danced like he was in Saturday Night Fever half the time. And the ending topped it off. After Sandman becomes this cheesy 90 foot giant thing, he walks up to Spiderman and goes, "sorry man" and floats away in a cloud of sand. HORRIBLE.

Mon, May 7, 2007 at 12:27 AM EST

that image is in fact Spider-man thinking after what he has realized what he has done to MJ on top of "the church"

android Mon, Apr 9, 2007 at 08:44 PM EST

spiderman 3 is gonna be kickass yeah

Heather Watson Mon, Apr 9, 2007 at 10:25 AM EST

yeah, I'm really looking forward to seeing the outcome of this series...is there going to be a fourth one? Or is that still undecided? And if so...is Tobey Maguire remaining as Spider-Man? I'm sorry...I've lost track of things for awhile...I was shocked when I found out that Topher Grace was playing the role of Venom...no offense Topher but, he's kinda small for the role. And I also just found out that Harry will be playing the role of Hob Goblin in this movie. I did manage to see some pictures of him in uniform...And Gwen Stacy she's a twist in the storyline eh? So, does Peter and Mary Jane split up or do they work things out through the tough times? I hear Peter gets violent with her...is this true?? And I also hear that a character dies...I've been told it's Mary Jane then I was told that it was Harry cause he gets into a fight with Peter as Hob Goblin avenging his fathers death and dies in the process. So Peter kills his best friend...Like I said before...I fell behind on the facts

well i believe that it is a different pic because look at the fabrics detail, the red and white suit wasnt like that

webslinger24 Sat, Apr 8, 2006 at 01:05 AM EST

If anyone is a real Spidey fan and loves all of the characters, they should realise that Venom is an alien, hense the teaser picture is totally wrong on VENOMS point of view.

Venoms suit even when on spidey had white bars across his forehand for webslinging and the spider across his chest was larger and broader and WHITE. even his eyes are wrong, and to that point the alien suit was smooth..

Like a wetsuit, black and white suited with the characters profile indicating that there was a good side to Venom and not totally evil. But Carnage, the pure evil and bastard side and side product of Venom.

But everyone should know what happened to Spidey when he became Captain universe.

I really hope that Sam Rami Doesn't disgrace Venom, EVEN THOUGH HE DOSEN'T LIKE THE CHARACTER.

And in the true story line of the characters what about the other super villian? Hope they don't stop at 3 and follow through.

if they do stop at 3, then R.I.P. to the lizard, electro, hob-goblin, carnage, and to the other cool supervillians that spidey and to wrestle with in his story and adventures.

Maybe he was feeling a bit emo and wanted his outside to match his inside.

JaY Tue, Mar 21, 2006 at 10:15 AM EST

It looks nothing like the symbiote suit and his in the dark ( at night ) and its raining of course the suit would look dark but it looks nothing i repeat nothing like the symbiote suit

Pat Sun, Mar 19, 2006 at 08:35 PM EST

Where is the white patch on the back of his hands for the webbing.....?

Aimee Sat, Mar 4, 2006 at 12:11 AM EST

http://www.joblo.com/index.php?id=10505

Shows a close up of Spidey's eye. You can actually see venom there.

Abubu Tue, Feb 28, 2006 at 10:36 PM EST

From the comics, the black suit is from that intergalactic space war. From the cartoon, the synbiote comes from space with JJ's son. But from the new spider-man comic, "Ultimate Spider-man", Venom is actually a genetically made weapon developed by Peter's late dad. The weapon later fuses itself to Peter.

im im trying to say is, maybe in the movie, the black suit isnt an alien organism but more of a genatically made entity. It goes of from the original comic's plot. But lots of people are either gonna love it or gonna hate it.

Lazlo Tue, Feb 28, 2006 at 12:02 AM EST

That's totally Spidey wearing the symbiote suit. So it doesn't have its own emblem. Doesn't it make sense for the symbiote to cover what spidey already has?
The second movie sets up the symbiote suit with Jameson's son returning from a space voyage. If you look how he moves when he goes to help MJ at the end, you will notice he is quite agile. This movie will have Spidey in the black suit and end with him getting rid of it and Brock picking it up.

Mike in Moncton Sun, Feb 26, 2006 at 05:14 PM EST

Go to the Ain't It Cool News site and see the 'rumors' and 'facts'. This, in fact, is a COLOR picture of the black and white costume, or alien symbiote. This is a classic brooding shot of Peter in costume, agonizing over being stuck with the alien symbiote.

Curt Connors is supposed to be in '3', but just as Curt Connors for now, helping Peter out with matters. A newer version of the Green Goblin is supposed to happen with Harry Osbourne, as was hinted in '2', and there's allegedly supposed to be a fight scene climax to bring the house down with GG & Spidey taking on Sandman and Venom. Venom's 'demise' is supposed to be left open for the fourth film. Harry Osbourne and Aunt May are on the chopping block for '3'.

Sam Raimi doesn't really like the Venom character, but since it looks like he's going to tweak his appearance and story, it looks like he's going to do it. And he'll do a great job. He's even including the Bell Tower sequence in the movie, where Peter gets rid of the symbiote and Eddie Brock picks it up. Could Carnage be far behind??

I place all my trust in Raimi, since we've all doubted him before with the first two films and he knocked both of them out of the park.

Matt Sat, Feb 25, 2006 at 02:37 PM EST

Come on people!... The pic is Spider-Man in the Symbiote suit without equivocation... The tone of the pic, the pose he's in, and the rain pounding down on our hero all foreshadow a somber moment in the film we have yet to see...The fact that Spidey's arm is covering his mouth is classic Raimi messing with peoples expectations... And based on the fringe(But clever) theories on this board... It worked! See you on 5/4/07

EJ Olokpa Sat, Feb 25, 2006 at 11:04 AM EST

I don't like this suit. I am old school fan . I am 31 yrs old and I like the old suit. I made spidey look like a ninja !

Larry Sat, Feb 25, 2006 at 07:46 AM EST

I think the poster is great. It's obviously doing what its supposed to do and that is intrigue, engage and provoke. Can't wait for the movie. Didn't like the first one, thought the second one was fire and am eating up all the buzz on this one already!

Doug Sat, Feb 25, 2006 at 03:27 AM EST

You guys seriously think that's Venom??? C'mon...it's not the right suit. It's not even a BLACK suit. It's just a dark picture. IF they do the black suit/Venom story, they REALLY need to do it over 2 films (introduce the black suit-which that is NOT-at the end of this one, have part 4 be the Venom story). Nothing else would do such a complex story justice.

Namar Sat, Feb 25, 2006 at 12:02 AM EST

i thik the suit is HELLA KOOL!

but it cant be Venom...

too predictable if u ask me...

Chris McVetta Fri, Feb 24, 2006 at 10:47 PM EST

Whatever happened to the build-up to The Lizard in Spider-Man 1 and 2...???

Perhaps Sam Raimi should cast Phillip Seymour Hoffman as "The Kitchen Sink."

Carrie:

Sorry, but I have no idea what you're seeing in the eyes- could you maybe point it out (photoshop in an outline or something)?

Lynn Fri, Feb 24, 2006 at 08:35 PM EST

I'm confused...I thought it had been confirmed that Topher Grace was in fact going to play Venom and Thomas Haden Church was going to play Sandman. I remember reading it on this site, in fact. Can somebody explain?

Anthony Fri, Feb 24, 2006 at 04:19 PM EST

That is a picture of Spider-Man, not Venom. Venom's suit is much more different than the suit in this picture, which looks just like Spider-Man's suit but in black. And it is also absurd to say its Venom because you "can't see his mouth". The black Spidey will lead to Venom though, probably at the end of this movie, setting him up for Spider-Man 4. And I think it will be a bit darker movie. I assume that both Harry and Mary Jane will die as both James Franco and Kirsten Dunst have said this is their last movie.

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f264/bvanhaun/spiderman3eye1.jpg

I stole these links from imdb.com. Take a closer look, I can see Venom or Hobgoblin in the middle. My real theory is that the picture is of Topher Grace as Venom, though, since the mouth is covered by the arm.

cRAIG Fri, Feb 24, 2006 at 02:36 PM EST

being 35 years old, i guess i'd be considered an old-school Spider-Man fan. that may explain why i don't want Venom or the black suit in the third film, and last with Raimi/McGuire/Dunst. whatever happened to
Lizard? they had Dr. Connors makes cameos for nothing?
i was naively hoping for the Hobgoblin storyline, which was probably the best i ever read...

Jakeem Fri, Feb 24, 2006 at 02:05 PM EST

I'm still trying to figure out why they hired a blonde to play Peter Parker's redhaired girlfriend, and a redhead to play a possible blond love interest!

Eric Fri, Feb 24, 2006 at 01:47 PM EST

Check out this sony link. Looks like it is a black suit and not just a black and white photo.

Joel Fri, Feb 24, 2006 at 01:41 PM EST

Anyone notice how Spidey has his head bent down, as if in mourning ala the color black as well. Since Gwen Stacy is in Spidey-3, and in the comics she dies, maybe Spidey dons black to mourn his first true love dying in this film as well.

Jenet Fri, Feb 24, 2006 at 01:31 PM EST

Venom or no Venom, why not give Spider-Man a black costume? Think about it: wouldn't that be way more steathly than bright red and blue? Just look at how they changed the costumes in the X-Men movie to make them more like actual uniforms and less like cheesy leotards (yellow and blue spandex, anyone?). Not that, you know, the X-Men movies have been nearly as good as the Spider-Man movies.

KC Fri, Feb 24, 2006 at 01:27 PM EST

Venom should've been left for when the series finally goes downhill and the movies are made for "straight to video" fare.
There are so many other great classic-villians they could've gone with and Raimi succumbed to the fan boys.
Sad.

Winona Fri, Feb 24, 2006 at 12:59 PM EST

It's Venom. It's gotta be. Very cool picture!

Big Johnson Fri, Feb 24, 2006 at 12:58 PM EST

I can't wait to see Venom, but I am more concerned with exactly how they are going to incorporate the plot - I mean even if you go with the acceptable cartoon version (Jameson the astronaut brings the symbiote costume back from a space flight) of it's acquisition,it seems like a lot to fit in one movie - Spidey acquires suit, lives with suit, ditches suit, suit finds Brock, Brock becomes Venom. I suppose Topher could be playing Brock, and Spidey could use the suit's enhanced powers to fight off both Sandman and the return of the Green Goblin (Harry Osborn) before ditching it and Brock finds it at the end of the movie to prepare for Venom's introduction proper in Spidey 4. And as far as Raimi's tweaking of details, we know he's willing if it makes sense (no web cartridges, Peter has grown spinnerets - which of course makes the symbiote's ability to generate unlimited webbing moot already). The symbiote's melding with Pete's mind and all may just generate itself the way Pete's always known his costume to be - except it's black now. Oh well, I guess we'll just have to wait and see...

Marty Fri, Feb 24, 2006 at 12:56 PM EST

Anyone else notice that in the poster, Spider-Man's head is bowed down concealing his mouth? What does the lower half of his face look like? Hmmm?

GT Fri, Feb 24, 2006 at 12:40 PM EST

Sorry Dan no Kingpin in the Spidey movies. When the Daredevil movie was made it was made by another studio and the Kingpin character was part of that liscence. That is the same reason why the reporter in Daredevil doesn't work for the Daily Bugle, since that is part of the Spider-Man Liscence.

Ep Sato Fri, Feb 24, 2006 at 12:22 PM EST

I always disliked the Venom sublplot, but always thought that black costume was a tough mofo.

Can this mean a "Secret Wars" movie is not so far off? Doobie Doo!

Sean Fri, Feb 24, 2006 at 12:13 PM EST

THAT SUIT IS AWESOME

Lee Fri, Feb 24, 2006 at 11:28 AM EST

I think it is just a dark picture of the regular costume. Maybe to portray a darker movie. As for the rumor that it is the Venom symbiote, I seriously doubt it. It looks nothing like the Venom suit, the suit was all black with a huge white Spider on his chest and back with completely different, more wild eyes. So I truly doubt that it is Tobey in the Venom suit.

dan Fri, Feb 24, 2006 at 11:03 AM EST

cool poster!! Right up there in line with the batman begins artwork...lets remember that tobey was a shrimp and people were suprised to see him bulked up for the first spidey movie...cant wait for this one!

P.S. WILL WE EVER SEE KINGPIN IN ONE OF THESE MOVIES?

pn Fri, Feb 24, 2006 at 11:02 AM EST

Stryking resemblence to the black suit

Thad Fri, Feb 24, 2006 at 11:01 AM EST

The black suit had no web designs, it was more like a sleek rubber suit with the white spider and the eyes are wrong. This poster looks tricky. Its not the true black suit. Just looks like the old suit in grayscale. Raimi is too much into detail to have this flaw. Cool poster though.

John Fri, Feb 24, 2006 at 10:56 AM EST

Based on the poster, it loks like Spidey will be driving the Dale Earnhardt Chevy.

brandonk Fri, Feb 24, 2006 at 10:50 AM EST

If they were going to release a picture that showcased a new black and white suit, why didn't they constrast it with color in the background? It just looks like a grayscale poster.

jcoop Fri, Feb 24, 2006 at 10:40 AM EST

whoever it is, it's awesome!

jojo Fri, Feb 24, 2006 at 10:23 AM EST

I bet that's a plant and that it's Venom. Maybe they're going to be doing single posters of characters, like X3. That would be awesome.

Adair Fri, Feb 24, 2006 at 10:23 AM EST

Have you seen Topher Grace? Skinny kid. Unless he's wearing a bodysuit, that's Tobey, he's a little thicker.
