9225__wilson_l Wilson Pickett, who died yesterday of a heart attack at age 64, deserves to be remembered as a titan who was up there with Otis Redding in the 1960s soul pantheon. The "Wicked Pickett" was known for scorchers like ''In the Midnight Hour,'' ''Mustang Sally,'' and ''Land of 1,000 Dances,'' but he was also an astounding cover artist when it came to ballads (''Hey Jude,'' ''Sugar Sugar'' -- yep, he even made the Archies sound soulful). Despite his lack of chart success in later years, he reportedly remained a riveting performer well into his 60s. For proof, and to honor the man, listen to this streaming show of live Pickett tracks compiled yesterday at soul-patrol.com.

Another great singer gone on home. Wilson will always be remembered because he had the songs of our era. "RIP WILSON"

Pickett sang the original soul that has been crushed twisted, decapitated and de-balled not to mention de-hearted by hip hop and rap.He was one of the REAL ones. There are too few of them around.

I was so sorry to learn of the loss of this wonderful entertainer. I could have sworn that each time I heard "Mustang Sally," he was singing it to ME!

On the IFC channel Wednesday night, they showed "Only the Strong Survive" which featured Pickett prominently.
