Oscars tell Mizrahi: Keep your hands to yourself

Jan 23, 2006, 09:13 AM | by Gary Susman

Categories: Oscars 2006

91911__isaac_lIn the wake of Isaac Mizrahi's touchy-feely performance on the red carpet at last week's Golden Globes, the Academy is grumbling about E!'s plan to have Mizrahi manning the carpet at the Oscars as well. ''If they're suggesting they would do something similar on our red carpet, we would have some good discussions with them,'' Academy spokesman John Pavlik told the Associated Press. ''I can predict we would be extraordinarily angry if that happened on our carpet. I cannot predict what we would do afterwards.'' Presumably, that means banning E! from future red carpet coverage.

Is the Academy making a big stink over nothing, considering that no celebrities have yet complained about Mizrahi's manhandling? (Contrast this with the complaints from Dakota Fanning's camp over Kathy Griffin's joke at last year's Globes that the child star was in rehab, forcing an apology and charitable donation from E! and probably also leading to E!'s decision not to hire Griffin again this year.)

Do you think Mizrahi will tone down his act for the Oscars? Should he?

Im not gay im just happy Tue, Mar 28, 2006 at 02:07 PM EST

Let's see what Scarlett had to say:
“It was definitely in poor taste,” said Johansson, speaking about her reaction publicly for the first time.

“I’d been prepping for two hours with hair and makeup and getting dressed. And the first interview I do, someone who I have never met before fondles me for his own satisfaction.”

Johansson was wearing a clingy, low-cut gown that made the most of her ample bust line when Mizrahi made his move.

“Mostly, I was thinking, ‘Oh, my god. This is happening on live TV.’ I don’t think he got a huge thrill out it. He was making some shocking show or whatever for his channel and wanted to be different and racy and all of those things,” she said.

“When it happened, I think I actually said, ‘What the heck is going on?’ At the same time, people made a huge deal out of something that, in the moment, was not as exciting as it seemed afterward.”

Johansson, speaking from the Los Angeles set of her new movie, “The Prestige,” isn’t buying Mizrahi’s explanation that he was just a designer trying to figure out how her dress was made.

“I’m sure he was very fascinated by that — like he doesn’t know how a dress works,” she said.

Turn-about is fair play. The 'gropee' should have been thinking quickly enough to respond with the proverbial 'grab n twist'. Would have pretty much resolved everything right on the spot - esp if the executor of the grab n twist has long nails...

Darlene Tue, Jan 24, 2006 at 06:36 PM EST

For once, the Golden Globes weren't boring. More Issac, please.

Donna Tue, Jan 24, 2006 at 09:03 AM EST

"they seemed to be sticking out there waiting for someone to touch them"?!!??!! "she shouldn't have worn the dress"??!!?? Holy crap! I can just see you at your rape trial, "Judge, she was asking for it because she was wearing such a short skirt." For the good of all society, please keep your neanderthalic genes (and other body parts) to yourself.

joan Tue, Jan 24, 2006 at 08:45 AM EST

Isaac is a jerk. What reaction would his antics have generated had he been straight rather than gay? Just because the stars in question have chosen to take the high road and not comment any further on this crude, obnoxious creep's behavior does not absolve him from being the tacky, tasteless creep of the moment. When will his 15 minutes be over and he creeps back under the rock from which he emerged?

What?! Tue, Jan 24, 2006 at 01:11 AM EST

Unbelievable... any person who thinks this freak's nationally broadcast sexual assault of the said actresses is anything other than just that is a hypocrite... Think of any other profession where he wouldn't get fired, then sued, and you're kidding yourselves... Regardless of whether or not he has some ethereal "Gay Get Out Of Jail Free" card... Anyone defending his behavior is clueless.

aramis Mon, Jan 23, 2006 at 09:23 PM EST

Some people are so judgemental.

Isaac was entertaining. More so than I ever found the great Joan, and more so that Kathy was. Did he act inappropriately? I don't think so. Mostly because these are a bunch of celebrities getting together to celebrate each other's notion of what entertainment is and it's affect on relaying that notion to the people. In the spirit of such things, Isaac seemed the perfect personality to balance out any of those celebrities who might have found themselves a bit higher than anyone attending the event, and higher than the people watching at home who helped put them in such an event. His actions were entertaining, and this is proven by the fact that everyone seemed at ease with him. While Hillary Swank might have been annoyed with the question of her love life, she shook it off because she seemed to enjoy his interview. This goes with all the other celebrities I saw him with. Everyone laughed, as did I. If I was him, I probably would have touched Scarlett's boob too, they just seemed to be sticking out there WAITING for someone to touch them. If this was a problem for her, which, by the interview, it clearly wasn't, then she shouldn't have worn the dress, or she should have said something (and at this point, she hasn't said anything, so what does it matter?).

People need to stop being so freakin' judgemental. It's sickening to see how hateful some people can be, and for no good reason.

djm Mon, Jan 23, 2006 at 06:56 PM EST

Let's not forget the reason that Kathy Griffin isn't on the show anymore - because Ryan Seacrest ripped her shirt open on live tv (the People's Choice Awards) and never apologized for it. Where is all of your outrage over that? If anyone should be banned from E! (and all other shows) it's Ryan. I still say boot him, bring Kathy back and have her & Isaac run the show.

Heathe Mon, Jan 23, 2006 at 06:50 PM EST

Isaac really needs to know at least a little bit about each celebrity he interviews. He made poor Hillary Swank and Natalie Portman feel so ackward and made himself look ill-prepared. Don't get me wrong, I thought for the most part he was funny, but those two interviews made me feel embarrassed for those stars.

Misty Mon, Jan 23, 2006 at 05:48 PM EST

That type of behavior may be ok for the MTV Video awards, but this is a classy event and should be treated as such. Not only were his hands all over the place, but his questions were completely out of line. Plus, the only reason that nobody objected was they were too embarrassed.

rob Mon, Jan 23, 2006 at 05:18 PM EST

i would like to see him at least one more time on the golden globes. i had no idea who he was. he was fun to watch.

cheriekeane Mon, Jan 23, 2006 at 04:59 PM EST

Isaac was fantastic! He was funny, witty, and made me laugh
so much that the pre-show was actually more entertaining
than the Globes Ceremony.

If E! knows what it's doing, they will keep Isaac,
minimize the screen time for Seacrest (that "tool")
and take it from there.

Sam Mon, Jan 23, 2006 at 04:40 PM EST

If a straight heterosexual guy did that to those women, he'd be shunned by media and celebrities alike. The fact that he's gay shouldn't make up for his crummy behavior.

Trish Mon, Jan 23, 2006 at 03:55 PM EST

I like Isaac...I do. But what he did was more than strange. Then again, Scarlett let him do it. I'm actually more floored by his question to Eva Longoria. Dude...why would you possibly care?

Kent in Kentucky Mon, Jan 23, 2006 at 03:48 PM EST

As long as the celebrities don't mind...WHO CARES!!!! Gay guys have a thing for women's breasts...not sexual, mind you...we just find them fascinating. When I saw him to that to Scarlett...I thought, "I would have done the same thing". I thought he was absolutely hilarious, and wasn't spending his time mugging for the camera.

I hope he's back on at the Oscars...and I hope he grab's George Clooney's ass this time!

chardonna Mon, Jan 23, 2006 at 03:33 PM EST

Groping aside, Isaac had a permanent foot in his mouth the whole time, asking inappropriate questions to Natalie Portman and Hilary Swank, making them both obviously uncomfortable.

Maybe there needs to be some thinking outside the box regarding the pre-show. I'd much rather hear about predictions and other not-nominated performances, as well as what's next on the plate for the nominees, with the occasional glimpses as to who is wearing what. All the focus on celebrity is boring. Give me what I want - movies.

djm Mon, Jan 23, 2006 at 03:33 PM EST

I am more shocked by the homophobes posting in this thread than by anything Isaac did on the red carpet.

If Scarlett doesn't have a problem with being felt-up by Isaac than we shouldn't be worried about it either. Isaac was far more entertaining than Ryan Asswipe - oops, I mean Seacrest. I wish E! would dump him, bring Kathy back to host and have Isaac do the red carpet thing - now that is a show I'd watch with pleasure.

Msally Mon, Jan 23, 2006 at 03:32 PM EST

To Ftworthbabe: so you think Isaac asks the questions we all want to know?? Judging from the responses on this board, it would seem that most of us (many, anyway) would not be included in your "WE" world.

I, for one, don't give a hoot about someone else's hoo-hoo. His behavior was ridiculously bad.

Phoebe Mon, Jan 23, 2006 at 03:22 PM EST

I didn't think anyone could possibly be as bad as Joan Rivers, Star Jones, and Kathy Griffin, but Isaac was really inappropriate. I can't believe he felt up Scarlett Johansen. He's annoying just like all of the others. Why can't they find someone funny, charming, and NOT ANNOYING? I don't understand why it's so hard.

Jeric Mon, Jan 23, 2006 at 03:21 PM EST

Ryan needs to go. Kathy needs to come back. I find myself having to tune into the TV Guide channel b/c E! got rid of Kathy.

Michelle Mon, Jan 23, 2006 at 03:11 PM EST

Put Isaac & Kathy on the red carpet & get rid of Seacrest & Guiliana. Boooring! Seacrest OUT.

Nicky Mon, Jan 23, 2006 at 03:08 PM EST

I don't get why Kathy was considered crude and vulgar, yet Isaac not. All designers are touchy-feely people, but c'mon, this wasn't backstage of a runway show, but on national TV.

But E probably loving all this after-chat. Because nobody is talking about vanilla flavoured Ryan S. and his equally bland co-host (Debbie?) are they?! After paying big buckaroos for Ryan, E probably got Isaac and the others on the cheap-cheap!

Maurine Mon, Jan 23, 2006 at 03:03 PM EST

I'm surprised no one slapped him or walked away in disgust. If he is on, I hope no one watches. I am less than impressed with Issac.

V.M.L. Mon, Jan 23, 2006 at 02:56 PM EST

Isaac was vulgar. He should go.

Laura Mon, Jan 23, 2006 at 02:36 PM EST

Get rid of Isaac! He was HORRIBLE and completely tasteless. Dump him!

kav Mon, Jan 23, 2006 at 02:20 PM EST

BRING KATHY GRIFFIN BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nick Mon, Jan 23, 2006 at 02:10 PM EST

Issac was the best thing about the red carpet show, he knows fashion, he knows the right questions to ask, most celebrities know and love him, so he is fantastic. I also liked Kathy Griffin, she knows her stuff, but some of her jokes were lost on the celebrities.

E! would be smart to get rid of Ryan Seacrest, really he is boring, bland and of no interest. Bad move E! It actually made me miss Starr Jones, and I thought she was not that great either!

Ep Sato Mon, Jan 23, 2006 at 02:00 PM EST

So long as he doesn't ask any of the Oscar women if they have a mohawk vs. bikini and avoids asking embarrasing questions about underwear he should be okay. But why risk it? I think the E folks are digging the buzz and are betting that they won't get banned next year no matter how many breasts Isaac puts his hands on.

Snowballs Mon, Jan 23, 2006 at 01:53 PM EST

He has NO fashion sense either.

Laurie in NYC Mon, Jan 23, 2006 at 01:52 PM EST

He was great! And so was Kathie G. These movie makers take themselves so seriously, they need to be poked and satirized -- after all, they're all playing "Let's Pretend" and that's the extent of their contribution to humanity: they are nothing more than court jesters.

Deidre Mon, Jan 23, 2006 at 01:39 PM EST

I like Isaac's shows. It was a great idea to hire him for his fashion background and his personality, but he needs to reel it in on asking questions about underwear, looking in women's handbags and touching. He is a better interviewer than he exhibited at the Globes. One more chance. I was happy they fired Kathy because of her vulgarity.

Mariane Mon, Jan 23, 2006 at 01:27 PM EST

Tasteless. Asking about pubic hair shaving was too much.

lizzie Mon, Jan 23, 2006 at 01:25 PM EST

I thought Isaac was great! He was the only one who added life to E!'s red carpet parade. The rest were BORING! More Isaac!!!

Sean Mon, Jan 23, 2006 at 01:17 PM EST

It makes no sense that they got rid of Kathy Griffin. She was spontaneous, funny and made the red carpet a riot. Who is making decision's at E!? An off the wagon Dakaota Fanning?

Kiel Mon, Jan 23, 2006 at 01:15 PM EST

Whoooooooo cares.

kosmo vinyl Mon, Jan 23, 2006 at 01:09 PM EST

Have you seen the UK version of "What Not To Wear"? Trinny and Susannah have a habit of being very touchy feely as well, as usual Americans are just to hung up on such matters.

Jeff Mon, Jan 23, 2006 at 12:59 PM EST

Only a gay man gets away with that type of behavior. I say can him.

mv Mon, Jan 23, 2006 at 12:41 PM EST

i thought he was inappropriate and funny and cringe-inducing all at the same time. i don't care whether they keep him or not, but i just can't believe he is deemed ok by E! and not Kathy Griffin? seems messed up to me.

ftworthbabe Mon, Jan 23, 2006 at 12:35 PM EST

Please keep Isaac!! At least he wasn't fawnign all over everyone- And he asked the questions that we all want to know the answers to but no one asks!! Way to go!!

Tracey Mon, Jan 23, 2006 at 12:14 PM EST

What has it come to? Ryan Seacrest, Star Jones, Kathy Griffin and Isaac, all terrible. Please E! get someone to do the preshow that is actually worth watching. Huge mistake letting Joan and Melissa Rivers go.

RDS Mon, Jan 23, 2006 at 11:52 AM EST

Mr. Mizrahi is smart enough to realize he may have stepped over the line once or twice. But he's charming and funny and different He deserves the chance to prove he can temper his contagious enthusiasm with a little more decorum. And there is the buzz factor to consider. Everyone's talking about his performance which must make the execs at E! pretty happy.

Suzy Mon, Jan 23, 2006 at 11:44 AM EST

Look, just because Mizrahi is a flaming fagg, it doesn't give him the right to grope as he wants or ask questions about the hair down there. He is AWFUL and should be fired in the name of good taste. Please E, get rid of this embarassment!

Dee Mon, Jan 23, 2006 at 11:35 AM EST

Bring back Kathy.

Msally Mon, Jan 23, 2006 at 11:30 AM EST

Mizrahi's groping of his guests was, literally and figuratively, simply atrocious behavior. We are such a "shock" culture that this is the best we can do??

Jon Mon, Jan 23, 2006 at 11:29 AM EST

How many of those gowns has Isaac designed and loaned for free over the years? Come on. If he can't be sarcastic and funny about the red carpet experience, I don't know who can.

Rachel Mon, Jan 23, 2006 at 11:10 AM EST

I didn't see it live but on the Leno Show, & I thought it was part of the gag on his show, but I couldn't beleive how digusting he was! So no mo Isaac! Please!

Ashley Mon, Jan 23, 2006 at 11:09 AM EST

Love love loved Isaac. Ryan Seacrest bores me to sobs and is snippy. Issac was having fun and the celebs (most of em anyway) seemed to enjoy him.

mike Mon, Jan 23, 2006 at 11:05 AM EST

The red carpet pre-shows totally mindless. I know a lot of people care more about what the stars wear than the awards. It's about movies, you know!

jeff Mon, Jan 23, 2006 at 11:05 AM EST

Bring back Kathy Griffin. She's the best part of the pre-show.

LHB Mon, Jan 23, 2006 at 11:03 AM EST

They kicked off Kathy Griffin because E! brought in Ryan Sechrest. They have a history that has become part of Kathy's routine, and it's not good.

frank Mon, Jan 23, 2006 at 10:59 AM EST

Get rid of him. He was awful at the Golden Globes. I cannot believe they gave up Kathy Griffin for him on "E"!!

Kari Mon, Jan 23, 2006 at 10:58 AM EST

I got the feeling that more big name people would talk to Isaac because he's funny, not threatening, not as self-congratulatory and certainly not stupid like some of the other personalities that work the red carpet. Keep him - he's better than 98% of what else we've seen. And if the Academy can't laugh at themselves a little bit, then really, get over yourselves. It's just a stupid awards show.

Mike Mon, Jan 23, 2006 at 10:54 AM EST

I don't care for Isaac, I would've enjoyed more Guiliana Depandi ga ga-ing over George Clooney.

Josiah Mon, Jan 23, 2006 at 10:52 AM EST

Bring on Heidi Klum! Isaac you are Out!

N. Kelker Mon, Jan 23, 2006 at 10:38 AM EST

I love the preshows, and in fact watch more of those than the actual awards. I found Mizrahi's behaviour to be totally inappropriate to the occasion. He was so obnoxious that I changed channels to another preshow. He should not be on the Oscar's red carpet, but if he is, he should tone it down!!

pn Mon, Jan 23, 2006 at 10:19 AM EST

As much disgusted and appauled at his behaviour to everyone at the globes this year i have to admit it was the most entertaining and outrageous pre-show coverage i have ever seen... ever....i found myself changing channels back and forth from nbc and E! and found myself actually jaw dropping when he gropped scarlet johansson breast, i have no idea how she felt embarresd, annoyed but she was laughing so was she enjoying it????

kj Mon, Jan 23, 2006 at 10:19 AM EST

i thought he was great! he was the best thing on the red carpet in years.

BK Mon, Jan 23, 2006 at 10:16 AM EST

Isaac was annoying, and needed to keep his hands off celebrities oobies and out of their purses. Not all gay men know fashion or how to interview appropriately/professionally!! I certainly won't be watching E!s preshow coverage.

Kiki Mon, Jan 23, 2006 at 10:00 AM EST

I LOVE Isaac. I think he was great and funny! He was so much better than Star Jones, who would spend most of the time trying to kiss up to the celebrities and making jokes that were not funny. Isaac understands fashion, he is fun to watch and the celebrities seem to like him as well.

brandonk Mon, Jan 23, 2006 at 10:00 AM EST

Who watches the preshows anyway?
