What are your favorite pop Christmas carols?

Categories: Music

132722__run_lLet's face it: Whether you're trudging through the mall to shop for presents or fleeing to the drugstore to pick up the prescription that helps you cope with holiday stress, you're going to be bombarded with Christmas music for the next month. Wouldn't it be great if you could at least raise the hipness quotient of the piped-in carols, so that you're not listening to the Muzak versions of ''Sleigh Ride'' or ''Joy to the World'' for the zillionth time? Help your fellow PopWatchers by building a sap-free iPod playlist of the best rock-era Christmas carols.

Let's restrict the list to original tunes composed or performed by pop singers, rockers, and rappers; no covers of traditional tunes, and no novelty songs, no matter how much you like Bruce Springsteen's cover of ''Santa Claus Is Coming to Town'' or Elmo and Patsy's ''Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer.'' I'll start you off with some of my favorites -- several of which, it turns out, are compiled on the album Rock N' Roll Christmas:

''Father Christmas,'' The Kinks
''Christmas in Hollis,'' Run-DMC (above)
''Christmas Wrappin,'' The Waitresses
''Happy Xmas (War is Over),'' John Lennon
''2000 Miles,'' The Pretenders
''Christmas (Baby Please Come Home),'' U2
''Merry Christmas Baby,'' Chuck Berry
''Step Into Christmas,'' Elton John
''Fairytale of New York,'' the Pogues
''Christmas,'' The Who

Which other holiday hits belong on this list?

Great to see the Pogues are up here, i hate that the BBC are trying to censor it i mean no one cares about a few swears but where the hell is Aerosmith? They did a great cover i just can't remember what it was......

søren Sun, Dec 9, 2007 at 10:21 PM EST

It seems no one has mentioned my favorite xmas song of all time "I want a hippopotmous for christmas" by gladys peevy ( think thats the spelling) but it is a very awesome song

SkyeSimplePlanFan Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 06:14 PM EST

Simon (UK) Fri, Mar 30, 2007 at 12:55 PM EST

Stop the cavalry - Jona Lewie
Just listening to this one gets me in the mood for cosy a Christmas around the fireplace. Maybe you never got to here this one across the atlantic?

Renee Fri, Dec 1, 2006 at 01:32 PM EST

Did everyone forget about Bon Jovi's "Please come home for Christmas"?

Dr. BLT Wed, Nov 15, 2006 at 10:07 PM EST

There are so many wonderful Christmas songs. I love O Holy Night, I Wonder as I Wander, and Little Drummer Boy. As far as new Christmas songs go, I am a little biased, but Black Santa is pretty darned good. I'm proud that this song of mine entered the mp3 download charts at #21 last Christmas:

Black Santa aka The Black Santa Song

I agree, The Pogues - Fairytale has been my one and only carol for years now.

Some of these other suggested songs sound promising too.

JB Thu, Dec 22, 2005 at 07:40 AM EST

How about "Just Like Christmas" by Low. Has a great vibe, and also: "Christmas Song" by Raveonnete

Mark Mon, Dec 19, 2005 at 01:51 AM EST

How about some hip hop song that is basically a drum beat and a repeating rif, but the lyrics say "I'll be home, for christmas, bells ringin' choir singin'. It's my desire." and at the end of the song the drums kick into double time. That's a good song that can be heard often if you work somewhere that pipes in the muzak. Wish I knew the title of the song.

Brendon Sat, Dec 17, 2005 at 08:25 AM EST

The Waitresses. Superb. Here's a short, short video Xmas card I made that uses part of the song.

Pass it on...

aslkdfjsdfi Thu, Dec 15, 2005 at 07:10 PM EST

"Oi to the World" originally by The Vandals, re-done by No Doubt. You guys all have terrible taste in music.

aubrey Wed, Dec 14, 2005 at 07:38 PM EST

Merry christmas and happy holidays...N*Sync

oh yeah im such a loser..good song though

Erin Madsen Mon, Dec 12, 2005 at 09:41 PM EST

This is insane. Has no one ever heard Slade's "Merry Xmas Everybody"????

Kate Tue, Dec 6, 2005 at 09:58 AM EST

Father Christmas is one of the funniest songs about the holiday I have heard, and then there's John Mellencamp's I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus and Bruce Springsteen's Sant Claus is Coming to Town that always make me smile hearing them.

Kate Tue, Dec 6, 2005 at 09:50 AM EST

"I Want an Alien for Christmas" Fountains of Wayne

J.Me Tue, Dec 6, 2005 at 08:25 AM EST

Oh, I forgot Darlene Love - "All Alone On Christmas" (from "Home Alone 2")

Allison Tue, Dec 6, 2005 at 08:21 AM EST

I'm Jewish but absolutely love "I Believe In Father Christmas" by Greg Lake of ELP fame. It's a hauntingly beautiful song.

J.Me Tue, Dec 6, 2005 at 08:16 AM EST

Faith Hill - "Where Are You Christmas" (from "Dr. Seuss' How The Grinch Stole Christmas" movie)

Britney Spears - "My Only Wish (This Year")

Dolly Parton - "Hard Candy Christmas" (from "The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas")

Wham! - "Last Christmas"

Mariah Carey "All I Want For Christmas Is You"

sara Tue, Dec 6, 2005 at 01:29 AM EST

Guster - "Mamacita, donde esta Santa Claus?" and while I'm speaking Spanish, I've always loved "Feliz Navidad"

Jim in San Diego Mon, Dec 5, 2005 at 08:55 PM EST

Can't believe that no one's mentioned this song: Little Saint Nick by The Beach Boys. An all time original classic!!

Nancy Mon, Dec 5, 2005 at 08:46 PM EST

Donna, that song (if I'm thinking of the right one) is by Dan Fogelberg. I'm pretty sure it's called "Another Auld Lang Syne."

Nancy Mon, Dec 5, 2005 at 08:43 PM EST

I can't believe no-one has mentioned "Maybe This Christmas" by Ron Sexsmith.

Winona Mon, Dec 5, 2005 at 04:38 PM EST

Donna - are you thinking of "Christmas Wrapping" by the Waitresses?

Scooby Mon, Dec 5, 2005 at 04:25 PM EST

Mistress for Christmas, AC/DC

Yes AC/DC did a Christmas song!

Roxanne Mon, Dec 5, 2005 at 04:01 PM EST

Just the whole "A Charlie Brown Christmas" soundtrack. U2, The Pretenders, and John Lennon are next.

Anne Mon, Dec 5, 2005 at 03:56 PM EST

I think "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" was originally sung by Darlene Love, who sings it every year on Letterman. U2's version is also great. I also love Annie Lennox singing Winter Wonderland. Her voice sounds like cool, clear, crystaline snow!

Jen Mon, Dec 5, 2005 at 02:54 PM EST

Sarah McLachlan's "Song For A Winter's Night" is great, but it's actually a cover of a wonderful Gordon Lightfoot song.

One of my new favourites is "Elf's Lament" by the Barenaked Ladies and Michael Buble.

Gila Mon, Dec 5, 2005 at 02:14 PM EST

"Christmas" - Blues Traveler
"Footprints" - Barenaked Ladies

Connie Mon, Dec 5, 2005 at 02:08 PM EST

To replace the Kinks I propose "(It Must Have Been)'Ol Santa Clause" by Harry Connick, Jr.

jambajim Mon, Dec 5, 2005 at 02:03 PM EST

not really a xmas song but Fountains of Wayne's "Valley Winter Song" is a gorgeous track that gets me in the holiday mood.

also: Christmas Time is Here by Vince Guaraldi Trio
also: My Evergreen by Squirrel Nut Zippers
also: Fiona Apple's rendition of Frosty the Snowman
also: The Christmas Party by The Walkmen

Connie Mon, Dec 5, 2005 at 01:53 PM EST

9) "Soulful Christmas Tree" James Brown
10) "Christmas Time is Here" Vince Guaraldi Trio

Christmas girl Mon, Dec 5, 2005 at 01:47 PM EST

Some of you guys are missing the point. It's supposed to be an original song NOT a cover.

My favourites (and let's face it, most pop Christmas songs are pretty lame -classics are classics for a reason!) are "Christmas Day" by Dido and "Christmas Must be Tonight" by Robbie Robertson. I also like "The River" by Joni Mitchell, but I have to confess I actually prefer the Robert Downey Jr. version (but don't tell anyone!)

Melissa Mon, Dec 5, 2005 at 01:25 PM EST

Little Drummer Boy (Peace on Earth) by Bing Crosby and David Bowie. What an unforgettable duo...I'm shocked no one posted it yet!

Also, Blue Christmas by Elvis is an all-time favorite :)

GC Mon, Dec 5, 2005 at 01:15 PM EST

CHRISTMAS IN MALIBU by THE RADUDES

The Ramones - Merry Christmas (I Don't Wanna Fight)
The Flaming Lips - Christmas at the Zoo

Craig Mon, Dec 5, 2005 at 12:48 PM EST

Why hasn't anyone mentioned Donny Hathaway's "This Christmas"? It's a classic!

cathy Mon, Dec 5, 2005 at 12:45 PM EST

People, people. 32 comments and not one person mentions Happy Holidays or The Most Wonderful Time of the Year by Andy Williams!!! You can't help but sing along with a big goofy smile on your face. It's the first Xmas CD I put on every year. Plus, the very first It's a Very Special Christmas with Whitney back when she was awesome belting out Do you Hear What I Hear and the Eurythmics, Sting, Bruce, and my fav - It's Xmas Time in Hollis Queens, mom's cookin' chicken and collard greens.

Joyce Mon, Dec 5, 2005 at 12:37 PM EST

All I want for Christmas - Mariah Carey
Last Christmas - Wham

Paul Mon, Dec 5, 2005 at 12:16 PM EST

How about:
1) Where Are You Christmas? by Faith Hill
2) Up on the Housetop by Kimberley Locke
3) Oh Holy Night by Kelly Clarkson OR Mariah Carey
4) Do They Know Its Christmas? by Band Aid
5) Silver Bells by Clay Aiken and Kimberley Locke

Those American Idol Christmas CD's aren't half bad....

Lisa Mon, Dec 5, 2005 at 12:13 PM EST

The U2 one is the best. But I also love that one from one of the Home Alone movies.

JrsyGrl Mon, Dec 5, 2005 at 12:13 PM EST

Joe C, good call. Faith Hill's "Where Are you Christmas" is great.

And Donna, I agree with you on "Christmas Shoes". One of the worst songs (Christmas or otherwise) ever written!

Chris Mon, Dec 5, 2005 at 12:11 PM EST

Oh, and how could I forget "Santa Claus, go straight to the ghetto" by James Brown!

Thad Mon, Dec 5, 2005 at 12:11 PM EST

Eric, Its "Another Lonely Christmas" by Prince

Great song! (especially the long version)

Ana Mon, Dec 5, 2005 at 12:00 PM EST

Donna - you're talking about the Waitresses' "Christmas Wrapping". Great Song.

Qraig Mon, Dec 5, 2005 at 12:00 PM EST

I might get slack for this, but I like Madonna's cover of "Santa Baby" and anything Christmas-y by The Carpenters. There I said it. I feel no shame whatsoever.

Qraig Mon, Dec 5, 2005 at 11:59 AM EST

I might get slack for this, but I like Madonna's cover of "Santa Baby" and anything Christmas-y by The Carpenters. There I said it. I feel no shame whatsoever.

Melanie Mon, Dec 5, 2005 at 11:59 AM EST

I am going to go with Joe and say "Let Me Sleep" by Pearl Jam is one of my favorites.

I will also agree with Donna that "Christmas Shoes" is one of the worst. I thought I was the only one who got the creeps during that song.

Chris Mon, Dec 5, 2005 at 11:52 AM EST

New favorite: "Snowflakes of Love" - Toni Braxton
and an all time favorite: "Christmas is here" - Donna Summer

Happy K Mon, Dec 5, 2005 at 11:51 AM EST

Love Bruce's Santa Claus is Coming to Town!

eric Mon, Dec 5, 2005 at 11:49 AM EST

OK so Mariah Carey may not be "rock" and I may not be a Mariah fan but she gave the world a Christmas classic with "All I Want For Christmas Is You."

greg Mon, Dec 5, 2005 at 11:46 AM EST

Prince had a christmas song and it was really sad but it was a great one.

Bonnie Mon, Dec 5, 2005 at 11:41 AM EST

Song For A Winter's Night - Sarah McLachlan

Christmastime - Smashing Pumpkins

Christmas Song - Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds

Christmas Day - Dido

Mary Mon, Dec 5, 2005 at 11:38 AM EST

My most favorite Christmas (cover) song is "Please Come Home for Christmas", by The Eagles. I listen to it year 'round, and it is the only "Christmas" music I like, except for Bruce. My other favorite (but cheesy) song is Dan Fogelberg's Same Old Lang Syne. It's only played around Christmas time.

Joe Mon, Dec 5, 2005 at 11:25 AM EST

Let me check my collection...how about:

Blink 182, "I Won't Be Home for Christmas"
No Doubt, "Oi to the World"
CKY, "Santa's Coming"
Oscar the Grouch, "I Hate Christmas"
Jill Sobule, "The Saddest Day of the Year" and "Jesus Was a Dreidel Spinner"
Pearl Jam, "Let Me Sleep"
Something Corporate, "Forget December"
The Eels, "Christmas is Going to the Dogs"
Cracker, "Merry Christmas Emily"

GT Mon, Dec 5, 2005 at 11:23 AM EST

What about The Ramones "Merry Christmas-I don't want to fight tonite"?

Also I totally love Christmas in Hollis

Joe C Mon, Dec 5, 2005 at 11:22 AM EST

1) Mariah Carey--Miss you most at Christmas time--poignant song
2) Wham--Last Christmas--Great cheesey song
3) Dwight Yoakim--Santa Can't stay--A song about a drunk Santa Claus--only in country
4) Billy Squier--Christmas is the time to say I love you
5) Faith Hill--Where are you Christmas

MaryAnn Mon, Dec 5, 2005 at 11:10 AM EST

I love ''Christmas Wrappin,'' by The Waitresses
Band Aid - "Do They Know It's Christmas?"
Kelly Clarkson "Grown Up Christmas Wish"
Josh Groban "Believe"
and of course "All I Want For Christmas is You" by Mariah Carey

Donna Mon, Dec 5, 2005 at 11:07 AM EST

There's one that I don't know the name of. Very poppy. Tells the story of a woman who keeps missing hooking up with a guy all year and then on Christmas Eve runs into him in the grocery story, picking up cranberries. sniff, sniff. Anyone know the name?

How about worst songs: "Christmas Shoes" Beyond cheesy into disturbing.

Rudolph fan Mon, Dec 5, 2005 at 11:05 AM EST

Anyone know where to find the song sung by the misfit toys in the original Rudolph special that just aired. that would be on my list of favorite holiday songs.

Winona Mon, Dec 5, 2005 at 11:03 AM EST

Mariah Carey - "All I Want for Christmas Is You" (I really can't stand her, but that song is awesome)
Wham! - "Last Christmas"
Hanson's covers of "What Christmas Means to Me" and "Run Rudolph Run" are great ones to crank, too.

Christopher Mon, Dec 5, 2005 at 10:54 AM EST

"Frosty The Snowman", by the Cocteau Twins
"25th December", by Everything But The Girl
"December Will Be Magic Again", by Kate Bush
"Make it Home" by Juliana Hatfield (and that 'Snuffy' guy who does all the music for the Bedford Falls t.v. shows)
"Merry Christmas From The Family", By Jill Sobule
"Better Days" by the Goo Goo Dolls

pssst, Grateful, that's "the rare ol' mountain tune"

EP Sato Mon, Dec 5, 2005 at 10:52 AM EST

Man, y'all haven't heard X Mas albums until you've listened to Willie Colon and Hector Lavoe's album "Asalto Navideno". The front cover of the album has them dressed as Santa and an Elf as they break into someone's house. Worth it for the song "La Murga", a salsa classic.

gabe Mon, Dec 5, 2005 at 10:50 AM EST

I Like Mariah's All I want for X-Mas is You

Spud Mon, Dec 5, 2005 at 10:46 AM EST

Add
Queen - "Thank God It's Christmas"
Band Aid - "Do They Know It's Christmas?"
and an overlooked gem from the "Scrooged" soundtrack
Robbie Robertson - "Christmas Must Be Tonight"

Ali Mon, Dec 5, 2005 at 10:40 AM EST

"Wonderful Christmastime" - Paul McCartney

Tonya Mon, Dec 5, 2005 at 10:34 AM EST

Power of Love - Frankie Goes to Hollywood
Do They Know It's Christmas - Band Aid
Wonderful Christmastime - Wings
Last Christmas - Wham

mon Mon, Dec 5, 2005 at 10:34 AM EST

I love "All I Want For Christmas is You" by Mariah Carey and i think this is the name of it "Feed the World" by all those 80s all-stars...oh and for cheese factor "Last Christmas I gave you my heart"

Megan Mon, Dec 5, 2005 at 10:32 AM EST

Christmas by Blues Traveler

Thad Mon, Dec 5, 2005 at 10:23 AM EST

I just can't get enough of the Luther Vandross Christmas cd. It has some tradional covers but also good orginal cuts

Every Year, Every Christmas
With A Christmas Heart
Mistletoe Jam
I Listen to The Bells

It's fast, its slow and its fun!

Brandon Mon, Dec 5, 2005 at 10:18 AM EST

Nice inclusion of "Christmas" by the Who. That's already on my Christmas playlist. I'm a big fan of "Maybe this Christmas" by Ron Sexsmith, "Happy Christmas (War is Over)" by John Lennon, "I hate Christmas Parties" by Relient K and the entire "James Brown's Funky Christmas" CD - but "Go Power at Christmastime" and "Santa Clause Go Straight to the Ghetto" are the best off that album.

Marisa Fuaro Mon, Dec 5, 2005 at 10:16 AM EST

Hey, isn't the U2 song a cover version?

I love the ones on the list. I also love "Christmas Time (Oh Yeah)" by Barenaked Ladies and "River," by Joni Mitchell. "River" might not really be a Christmas song, but it's got the right mood.

hh Mon, Dec 5, 2005 at 10:15 AM EST

Mariah Carey's "All I Want for Christmas is You"-- amazing!

bandito Mon, Dec 5, 2005 at 10:12 AM EST

How about "Thanks for Christmas" - XTC

Grateful Fan Mon, Dec 5, 2005 at 10:09 AM EST

Glad to see the Pogues get listed. Raise your hand if you actually know who they are. *waits patiently* Not qutie kid-friendly family song, but quite good nonetheless..Great appearance by the late Kristy MacColl

It was Christmas Eve babe
In the drunk tank
An old man said to me, won't see another one
And then he sang a song
The Rare Old Mountain Dew
I turned my face away
And dreamed about you
