Our Top 5 TV Catchphrases of 2005

Dec 20, 2005, 10:33 AM | by Michael Slezak

Categories: 'Lost', 'Six Feet Under', Britney Spears, Reality TV, Television

9116__barney_lTV Tattle points out an interesting article in New York declaring How I Met Your Mother ''the most catchphrase-happy show on TV.'' Which got me thinking about the TV quotes I loved (and quoted) the most in 2005. With all respect to Britney, can you handle my truth? Here's my top 5:

5- ''Suit up!'' --Barney (Neil Patrick Harris, left), How I Met Your Mother

4- ''We're going to have to take the boy.'' --Creepy, bearded ''Others'' guy, Lost

3- ''Narm!'' --Nate Fisher, Six Feet Under

2- ''Hell to the no!'' --Whitney Houston, Being Bobby Brown

1- ''I don't need to see that!'' --Valerie Cherish, The Comeback

I don't know about you guys, but as Bobby and Whitney once said, ''They work, they work for me. They work, they work for me.'' Have I missed any of your favorites? Or should I have rearranged the order? Weigh in now.

I think people are getting "catchphrases" confused with memorable "quotes." Catchphrases are signature lines used often by a character or characters, e.g. Barney's "Suit up!" and "Haaave you met Ted?" from HIMYM, "Seriously?!" from Grey's Anatomy (which should be in the Top 5), or "I don't need to see that!" from The Comeback (which, incidentally, shouldn't be anywhere on this list, much less #1). Catchphrases from older shows would include, "The plane, boss, the plane!" from Fantasy Island, "Norm!" from Cheers, or "Doh!"/"Don't have a cow, man."/"Eehhhxcellent" from The Simpsons.

All the memorable one-liners from The Office, LOST, and reality TV are just quotes. Occasionally a quote becomes a catchphrase, a la "I'm Rick James, B*tch!," but I think that is the exception. Almost anything said during the hour of My Name is Earl and The Office could be a...wait for it.........LEGENDARY one-liner (homage to Barney). That's some funny stuff.

I can't believe Ari Gold's line from Entourage isn't on the list as it has already moved into other areas of pop culture, being used on several other TV shows (e.g. The Office).

For crying out loud...I just responded to a year old blog post...Lord help me...

"Do'h"-the simpsons

Stu Pidarse Wed, Jan 4, 2006 at 03:35 PM EST

"It's Karma's army, made up of people of all the lands of all the worlds" from My name is Earl is simply a classic line delivered with pitch-perfect amazement. This show, along with The Office, can give at least one catchphrase a week.

What about Gabrielle's response to the hot nun on Desperate Housewives when she said money can't buy happiness? Gabrielle - "Sure it does, that's just a lie we tell poor people so they won't riot." Classic.

Greg Wed, Dec 21, 2005 at 09:21 PM EST

The Comeback? Are you freaking kidding me? That show was so bad that HBO cancelled it after 1 year - and HBO NEVER cancels anything after one year.

ceci Wed, Dec 21, 2005 at 03:43 PM EST

What about... "What are you doin, alcoholic bitch" from America's next top Model..

kel Wed, Dec 21, 2005 at 03:41 PM EST

"Feliz Naviblah" from My Name is Earl. "Narm?" What the hell is that?

RCeesy Wed, Dec 21, 2005 at 02:21 PM EST

Let's Hug it out Bitch !!! - Ari Gold (Entourage)

'The Office' Is The New 'Arrested Development' Wed, Dec 21, 2005 at 01:56 PM EST

You think we should see other people? Exclusively?
(Michael on the phone to his boss the morning after they slept together on The Office)

Celia Wed, Dec 21, 2005 at 12:51 PM EST

By far, one of the most memorable lines fro 2005 was delivered countless times by Heidi Klum: "You're either in -- or you're OUT."

Oh, Project Runway. How fabulous you are.

Z Wed, Dec 21, 2005 at 12:50 PM EST

Awww Hell to the naw (or no whichever you prefer) is my absolute favorite. I use almost everday..That Whitney, she cracks me up (pun intended)

"Bitch took my ride"

Eva Wed, Dec 21, 2005 at 09:11 AM EST

I have two..."Bullshivism, pure Bullshivism", can't remember where I heard it, but I thought it was great! And "Don't judge me!" from My name is Earl.

Bill Wed, Dec 21, 2005 at 09:02 AM EST

Here's some from the most recent, and best of the season, SNL.

"Pass that Chronic(what?)cles of Narnia!"

"Mr. Pibb + Red Vines = Crazy Delicious"

"Snack Time Mother@#$%er!"

and my personal favorite:

"He looks like a rabbit..."

OMG, this...

"Yeah Brad, I'd love to, but, I'm babysitting my little brother so (grows beard) 'We're going to have to take the boy'"

... hilarious. I love the visual of someone all of a sudden growing a beard.

MIles Wed, Dec 21, 2005 at 02:23 AM EST

I could fill a page with Arrested Development Catchphrases that I use commonly, but, I'll just list three:

-COME ON!
-I've made a huge mistake
-What a fun, sexy time for you both

Though I've recently caught myself singing "FOR BRITISH EYES ONLY!" at the top of my lungs.

And, yes, you can use "We're going to have to take the boy" in everyday conversation. For example:

"You Mitch, you want to go see King Kong tonight?"
"Yeah Brad, I'd love to, but, I'm babysitting my little brother so (grows beard) 'We're going to have to take the boy'"

or

"I'm sorry son, it's illegal to place large flotation devices into the water without the proper permit, I'm afraid 'we're going to have to take the buoy'"

Eh, scratch that last one.

Lori Tue, Dec 20, 2005 at 10:50 PM EST

I'm on board with "Haaave you met Ted?" from HIMYM, too.

Cory Clay Tue, Dec 20, 2005 at 05:45 PM EST

"I think I've made a huge mistake" Arrested Development, started by and mainly used by Gob has also been used by his brother Michael

Brad Tue, Dec 20, 2005 at 05:16 PM EST

I pretty much agree with all these quotes for '05:

5- ''Suit up!'' -Barney is my favorite character from that show, he steals every scene he is in because of his one-liners.

4- ''We're going to have to take the boy.'' -Not that popular of a quote (even in the show), but you get the idea because they talk about "the boy" all the time.

3- ''Narm!'' -I don't watch Six Feet Under, but I've seen clips from the show of that part on Best Year Ever 2005, and it looked pretty funny.

2- ''Hell to the no!'' -It wouldn't be the Bobby Brown show without Whitney!!

1- ''I don't need to see that!'' -Ultimate quote of the year!!! I love The Comeback and am so glad that it is getting the recognition it deserves. If you could only see one new show from '05, it would have to be The Comeback! It is hilarious and such a great, original idea for a show!!!

Thank you EW for putting up these awesome quotes!

"I needed to see that!!"

EP Sato Tue, Dec 20, 2005 at 05:01 PM EST

Hell to the no. I've found myself using it in conversations more frequently than any educated person should...
that's just a big bowl of wrong

sarah Tue, Dec 20, 2005 at 04:35 PM EST

Though not as good as the others from How I Met Your Mother, I like Barney's insertion of “Wait for it” between the first & second half of pretty much any word.

toonces Tue, Dec 20, 2005 at 03:47 PM EST

umm is 'hug it out bitc#" in contention from Entourage? What's with the lame ABC/CBS comedies in this lineup??
Love the "moisture" line from Lucille Bluth.

"I'm a MONSTER!" from Buster Bluth

Tony N. Tue, Dec 20, 2005 at 03:39 PM EST

"Hell to the no!" is the best one, and I didn't even watch Being Bobby Brown. I also like "Suit UP", I only watch How I Met Your Mother for Barney.

Denise Tue, Dec 20, 2005 at 02:29 PM EST

"I don't need to see that!" is number one by far. Don't agree with Lost's "We're going to have to take the boy" because it can't be used out of context. The Comeback's quote is classic!

Patricia Tue, Dec 20, 2005 at 01:59 PM EST

From GOB on Arrested Development: "I've made a huge mistake." Technically introduced in previous years, but really taking hold (at least in my house) in 2005

Andi Tue, Dec 20, 2005 at 01:34 PM EST

"Because that's what Jesus would freakin do!" Also from Grey's Anatomy

Andi Tue, Dec 20, 2005 at 01:32 PM EST

Seriously! from Grey's Anatomy

Sarah Tue, Dec 20, 2005 at 01:19 PM EST

Tell me what you don't like about yourself. - Nip/Tuck

Joyce Tue, Dec 20, 2005 at 01:16 PM EST

Oh hell to the no! is perfect!!! Narm is a killer too (no pun intended).

Bren Tue, Dec 20, 2005 at 12:47 PM EST

The list became null and void when The Comeback and How I Met Your Mother was included.

Zac Tue, Dec 20, 2005 at 12:46 PM EST

Hey Steele, the beauty about Have you met Ted is you can replace it with any persons name and it still resonates. Even if you are not familiar with it...still funny and classic pick up line.

Alin Tue, Dec 20, 2005 at 12:43 PM EST

....Gilles Bensimon....

America's Next Top Model. That guy's name is forever scorched into my memory.

Todd Tue, Dec 20, 2005 at 12:39 PM EST

Lucille Bluth: "I don't know if I can spare the moisture."

steelej10 Tue, Dec 20, 2005 at 12:02 PM EST

The problem with catchphrases are, out of context they mean nothing. I don't watch "HIMYMother", "The Comeback" or "6'Under" so to me these phrases are pointless. Catchphrases need to stand on their own so even if you aren't familiar with the origin they still resonate.

Laura Tue, Dec 20, 2005 at 12:01 PM EST

Would definitely have to agree with "Haaave you met Ted?"

Sean Tue, Dec 20, 2005 at 11:58 AM EST

"Well...Happy Birthday Jesus, Sorry your party's so lame". - Steve Carrell The Office

Zac Tue, Dec 20, 2005 at 11:47 AM EST

By the far the best catchphrase is from How I Met Your Mother...."Have you met my friend Ted?" Loves it.

Melissa Tue, Dec 20, 2005 at 11:27 AM EST

I think the better catchphrase from How I Met Your Mother is "Haaaaave you met Ted?"
