What the critics are saying about Madonna's new album

Nov 15, 2005, 10:46 AM | by Michael Slezak

Categories: Madonna

9355__madge_lMadonna, take a bow. The reviews are in for your spankin' new disc, Confessions on a Dancefloor, and they're pretty darn positive. Yet while most (but not all) critics PopWatch perused this morning had nice things to say about the thumping beats and spacey beeps concocted by you and co-producer Stuart Price, it was uncanny how many of them blasted your lyrics for the song ''I Love New York.'' I guess maybe you should've picked something besides ''dork'' to rhyme with the world's greatest city. (Hmmm…what about "spork"?) Anyhow, here's a random sampling from eight reviewers around the country:

''Every song is tailor-made for getting your groove on, with surprisingly few clunkers.''
--Tim Pratt, Detroit Free Press

''In dance music, words exist to be repeated, twisted, obscured and resurrected. How they sound in the moment is far more important than what they mean, and Madonna knows that better than anyone. Confessions on a Dance Floor is 56 minutes of energetic moments. It will leave you feeling silly for all the right reasons.''
--Josh Tyrangiel, Time

''Featuring some sharp electronica production and more than a few moments of pose-striking irresistibility, it's also worthy of praise as Madonna's best album at least since 1998's Ray of Light -- and possibly since 1989's Like a Prayer… [Still,] most of the misfires come from the lyrics…the Madonna-for-poet-laureate campaign begins here and now, reader.''
--J. Freedom du Lac, The Washington Post

"Her voice, vastly improved since that '80s squeak, sounds pretty and unfettered (even when computerized) as it rides over tense waves of blip-whoosh-thrum technoise and blissful snap-crackle beats. There's no excuse, however, for clichés, nursery-rhyme simplicity and tired topics, such as the price of fame in 'How High.' Surely Madonna is capable of wittier couplets than 'Sticks and stones may break my bones, but your names will never hurt.'"
-- Edna Gundersen, USA Today

''Of course, since we're talking about Madonna, the feat of making terrific dance records wasn't enough. She also has to teach us something. Thankfully, her windy bromides don't kick in until halfway through.''
--Jim Farber, New York Daily News

''We have indeed heard it all before: the helium warble disco; the dark, twisted-fantasy bedroom grooves; the laughably bad stabs at musical theater; the failed attempts to go techno; the electronically tweaked folk schmaltz… Madonna has provided a decent disco soundtrack, with the best songs ready to slip in easily right after 'Believe' by Cher and just before that sure-fire crowd-pleaser, 'YMCA' by the Village People.''
--Jim Derogatis, Chicago Sun-Times

''[The CD] works well, at least most of the time. The songs are stylish and sexy, with hauntingly erotic choruses, repeated phrases and gently thumping pulses. Several of the tracks, such as the sweeping trio of 'Get Together,' 'Sorry' and 'Future Lovers,' are gorgeously textured with an ambient, spacey backbeat that's reminiscent of Brian Eno and U2's collaborative work, Passengers: Original Soundtracks 1.''
--Malcolm Mayhew, Fort Worth Star-Telegram

''Her lyrics are hit and miss, but Madonna gets into the groove and proves she can still pack a dance floor.''
--Thor Christensen, The Dallas Morning News

Okay, PopWatchers, tell us what you think about Confessions on a Dancefloor. Ready? Go!

This "Aisha" suit is baseless. She is a pro se litigant whose case was thrown out. She is filing another baseless appeal and requested recousal of SECOND judge Cooke because she believes there is a conspiracy against her. In her appeal, she claims BOTH judges "violated [her] rights and their oath of office." This is common, crazy people filing pro se suits. She alleges many "suits" against Madonna that do not exist. Another statement in her appellate brief: "If the judicial system will not address these crimes being committed, the Copyright Office must then be barred shut." She writes in her motion to reinstate: "Due to inadequate information I received over the phone and not being familiar with the appeals process as a pro se litigant, I request the Court reinstate my appeal that was dismissed on May 15, 2006, and accept the new appeal submitted herewith." and "I was also the victim of mail tampering." This person is CRAZY. go to www.aishamusic.com. It's scary actually.

Happy Birthday Madonna. You are the best. :)

Josh Thu, Apr 13, 2006 at 11:56 PM EST

Madonna is a great artist, some of you guys are nuts...
Madonna has a ton of money and when you have money crazy people will sue you hoping you will settle out of court since it usually is chaeper than going to court.

As far as this crazy woman Aisha, anyone who spends 10 minutes reading her site knows she is WAY past wacked.

Only a idiot would give it any merit...

Why anyone would bash Madonna is beyound me, she is a giving person who has donated millions to many causes including Aids. VERY few artist give what Madonna gives.

She is not a thief, and we all know that.

Its sad when someone like Madonna works there tail off to get to the top and you have a bunch of vultures trying to dis-credit and rip them apart based on ENVY!!!

tall_paul Fri, Jan 20, 2006 at 06:53 AM EST

It never fails to amuse me that people comment about the fact that Madonna will never have another number one single again. In American, this may be the case. But all of these people saying this have to realise that the world is a large place and doesn’t just consist of the United States. So far Madonna has spent 10 weeks at number one in the European charts with ‘Hung Up’, her album ‘Confessions..’ sold 4 million copies in it’s first week on sale and has reached number 1 in 29 countries.
The truth is, unless you are a hip-hop/R&B act, it’s near on impossible to get a top ten hit in the states, let alone a number one. If the American charts were based soley on sales, as apposed to airplay, they would be very different. A number one in America just means that some big radio executive has decided to play the song to death. The fact that a disco song can get to number 7 in 2005 says a lot. Nice to hear a song that isn’t about guns, street crime and ‘Ho’s’for a change.
As for the album, I think worldwide sales speak for themselves. It’s an amazing return to form. And if when I’m 47, I have half the energy and creativity as Madonna, I’ll die a happy man.

madonna does it again and again and again , people discussing her , like it or not . since 1984 people say , she can not sing , she is a one hit wonder she can't dance blabla 22 years later people still discussing her ... she is too old , she make crappy songs . C'MON , SHE IS HERE FOR ALMOST 23 YEAR she must have something other whiles she was turn in too dust 15 years ago with her fellow artist like cindy lauper , debbie gibson . bla bla . is cindy lauper still being compared with gwen stefani ? is whitney houston still compared with beyonce ? Madonna survived them all SHE IS A HELL OF A ARTIST amen

Lee Mon, Dec 19, 2005 at 01:04 PM EST

What a lousy album Madonna has produced from the so-called panels of professional producers. The lyrics from "I love New York" was uggh....rubbish....her voice is basically drown in the music beat. Moreover her songs are gravitating towards the retro times.Yeah..she seems to be "re-inventing" her music, but sorry she's definitely heading the wrong direction and you and I know that this type of music won't cater to a large demographic group of people. After two weeks in top ten on Billboard 200 Albums, you've slip off 10.Sorry Madonna, I think you should stick to what u do best which is writing storybooks for children, being a good wife and mother than to shake booty and show some butt cheeks. It's just morally degrading.

Nouha Wed, Dec 14, 2005 at 05:01 AM EST

I really admire Lady Madonna. She is wonderful on the dance floor and she really was right to start with the Hung up video clip...perfect.
whatever her age, she is beautiful!
I love you Madonna.

Ha Sat, Dec 10, 2005 at 04:59 AM EST

Madonna is a good performer, not a singer. Her voice is too weak - she can not sing at high tune, she can not sing at low tune

Have any one heard about an Americal Idol singing Madonna song in a contest?? Not at all - because singing Madonna song can not prove that they have a voice

Because it does not require a good voice to sing Madonna song

Sorry but that is the fact, Madonna is a good performer, with so many funny things done to draw people's attention, not by a wonderful voice

Gitte Sat, Dec 10, 2005 at 04:51 AM EST

Any body been looking at billboard.com this week??? Madonna albumn is No. 8, and MariahCarey at her 34th weeks on the board is ranked at No. 7

And then Hung up is No. 14 on Hot 100 this week, slips from no. 7 last week

Does that not say anything to you?? seems like Madonna chance of having another No. 1 on Hot 100 is too far to reach

Poor her, but her time is over now, and all efforts to make herself younger does not and can never works

Lupe Fri, Dec 2, 2005 at 04:14 PM EST

****fantastic*** I have been listening to this CD all week to learn all the words..Lady M..was awesome in 1984 when she came out with Lucky Star and her music made me want to dance at my freshman homecoming dance and now at the age of 35 I still want to shake my ass to her great music and my little 2 year old digs the funky ass sounds...Great F***kin Job...Madonna

mimi Wed, Nov 30, 2005 at 06:35 PM EST

She was the queen.
She is the queen.
She will be the queen ever...

She knows what she is doing.
This album is very addictive. It makes you forget when to stop listening... absolute pleasant drug.

Are you ready to jump?

I have to thank for the joy of MUSIC she provided us.

madonna4ever Mon, Nov 28, 2005 at 02:32 PM EST

Madonna is the queen,

all you haters, posting here about her age,

shows how pathetic it must be to be you,

no matter how old you are, madonna will always look better than you at any age, ha!
ps
madonnas new cd and music is hot and fresh and just the album of the year, a true masterpeice!!

Chris Thu, Nov 24, 2005 at 02:24 PM EST

Well, I think the album is great. let the facts speak for themself. The album is # 1 not only in the U.S but in 25 other countries. Warner Bro. released a statement that the album sold over 4 million copies world wide in its first week. Also, the album and single appear on 12 of this weeks Billboard charts. And the best of all Hung Up ties ELIVS for the most top ten hits by any music artist. I expect that to be broken when "Sorry" is released. You go girl.

Mario Mon, Nov 21, 2005 at 11:08 AM EST

eh..

I see the knuckle-dragging neanderthals are out in droves. Nothing new, their comments get a big *YAWN* from me as I've heard wittier, funnier stuff. This is nothing new, for those of us who have liked Madonna for some time, we know that people with very narrow minds and blurred points of view exist and often take opportunities at taking jabs at Madonna.

This CD is a solid pop album... don't take it from me, I'm 32 and considered "over the hill" by the youth obsessed people in the US.. take it from my 13-16 year old nieces who are all grooving to Madonna's latest effort, Confessions on a Dancefloor.

As for the comments about Gwen.. I'm not sure she can do it any better considering she's playing "dress-up like Madonna" these days; what's hilarious is that I vividly remember Gwen Stefani saying she would never sink to such levels of using her sexuality to garner sales and look at the skank now! At least Madonna never had problems letting people know she was using sexuality and her image for attention/publicity. The hypocricy is laughable!

Way to go Madonna, you get a rock hard body I would love to get down with - plus talent to boot!

Douglas Douglas Fri, Nov 18, 2005 at 06:14 PM EST

what is to be expected from Madonna is the unexpected! she never fails! Confessions...is a CD that needs to be played over and over again! the style is far from what we have heard and this almosts makes her a new singer...this proves she can more than re-create her look but also her human self! Shalom!

=O= Fri, Nov 18, 2005 at 02:04 PM EST

I find it really interesting that so many have taken this as an opportunity to slag off or tear something/someone down. Kinda sad. Not sure what motivates some. I thought that the world was moving beyong the agism and homophobia of the past. Guess Madonna has more work to do. (this coming from a Straight Male long-time fan, we exist!)

When Madonna told us all what to expect from her new album, she said that we should expect a fun, non-stop dance album. That is exactly what she has produced. There are at least 6 songs that are single worthy, which is good for any artist, no matter what age, genre, or whatever. Every artist is inspired by (and may even borrow from) others. It's called inspiration and every artist, even the most obsure and "underground" gets inspiration from somewhere/someone. If you don't like it, simply do not buy it, do not dance when it comes on in the club, do not bob your head and sing along when it plays on your car radio. If it grows on you, as I suspect you secretly like is already, jump on the bandwagon and get your groove on! Either way, music is a entity that should not be used as a factor to judge or criticize. If it was, Mariah Carey fans would not be able to walk in public. (Sorry for that, couldn't resist) Just enjoy it or don't. Find a blog for music that you like. Wouldn't that make you day just that much better?

Confessions is a fun, well produced group of guilty pleasures. It's when you have trouble admitting how much you might like something, that you know it really pushes the right buttons. Just go buy it!

Thanseer A. Fri, Nov 18, 2005 at 06:40 AM EST

JB Fri, Nov 18, 2005 at 02:25 AM EST

MADGE is BACK!..I have always been a fan..From the first time I head 'EVERYBODY' way back in 1982. I have enjoyed her music all these years!..I think this truly talented 'DIVA' has once again proven our 'youth obsessed' society that age is irrevalent, when it comes to 'real' talent..GO Girl!!!

alex Wed, Nov 16, 2005 at 10:27 PM EST

I don't understand why people are making a big deal about her age either...

SHe's 47! not 80!

WHy is it in the mindframe of people that just because you're over 40...you deserve to DIE???

get over it. madonna at 47, is in better shape than MOST 19 year olds in America (stuffing down McDonalds )..she looks incredible and can probably outdo most in a marathon with her years of dance training and vigorous physical fitness regimes.
Comments about agism are ignorant.
Most people wish they could look and dance like that at 47...I know my mother does.

enough with the negativity..and celebrate this woman who has accomplished so much.

47 years old is still very young...she's not going to be set out to pasture anytime soon.

CHer is almost 60..and still doing it....
and Tina Turner was doing it til almost 70.

Madonna has a looooong way to go...so get used to it..and get over yourselves.

alex Wed, Nov 16, 2005 at 10:20 PM EST

We need to stop making comments on Madonna's personal life and choices..and focus on the fact that BEFORE Gwen, or Britney, or Kylie..Madonna was still the queen of dance music in the 80's and through the 90's. She DOES have 34 #1 dance hits on the Billboard Chart. She is the queen of dance. This album was meant to be silly at times, frivolous and unapologetic, retro..and have influences of everything..it wasn't meant to be BREAKTHROUGH...or some NEW futuristic sound......it is NOT supposed to be a deep lyrical shakespearean text.

get over the negativity....

let's celebrate someone who has been constantly working and never takes a break for 22 years now. She looks better than ever..her new video is funny and silly, done with tongue in cheek and actual wit (which so lacks music videos today)..and this album is amazingly fun! turn the volume up all the way...give it a few listens...and the songs will all grow on you.

it is a triumphant way to stay strong. Way to GO!!!

People never like to see others do well because its a reflection of what they may have NOT accomplished in their own lives. Madonna's body is better than most 19 year old american girls stuffing themselves on McDonalds and she has 2 beautiful children, a great marriage and many homes and a long lasting brilliant succesful career that most people will never be able to reach half of.

I think that threatens people...and it makes them feel insecure.

We should celebrate this. She is an american legend. The perfect rags to riches story..and this should be commended..because it is what everyone dreams about accomplishing....and only few dare to realize those dreams.
Madonna did it...and that is all worth it.

maggie Wed, Nov 16, 2005 at 10:18 PM EST

more power to you madonna, that's great dancing
for a 60 year old woman. Your in great shape but
don't let the camera get too close on your face

Love Confession Wed, Nov 16, 2005 at 10:05 PM EST

There was a huge lack of popularity of the "American Life" album. I do not consider it a flop. I've heard some opinions that the album voiced Madonna's negative views regarding politics and religion. Although I don't necessarily agree with all of Madonna's views or how she chooses to voice them, I really loved the American Life album like many of her other previous celebrated and shunned albums. It is important to note that American's Life's strongest tracks, "Die Another Day," "Nothing Fails" and "Love Profusion" were not politically or religiously opinionated at all.

I love the upbeat/trancey "Confessions on a Dance Floor." PI believe the possible US radio friendly singles are "Jump," "Push" & "Sorry." Tracks that I tend to skip are "I love New York" and "Like It or Not"

To Danny T: Just because Madonna is being sued by various people doesn't mean she is guilty of the allegations. It will be up to a court of law to decide. It is probably best to stop spreading rumors and keep your opinions that are represented as fact underground for now.

Tubby Simpson Wed, Nov 16, 2005 at 09:37 PM EST

Woo hoo, here we go with another re-invention of Madonna. I think that this album is painful and should be given to muso's as a guide for what not to do.. I haven't actually heard this CD, but I usually speak my opinion about things I have no knowledge of!

I'm embracing my fatuality, deal with it

jodee Wed, Nov 16, 2005 at 07:41 PM EST

tired!
gwen does it fresher, does it better.
maddie should hang it up.
isn't she getting an english degree at oxford?
what's up with the lyrics?

hung up--to dry.

glitter beard Wed, Nov 16, 2005 at 07:16 PM EST

Well, I think the new Goldfrapp (Supernature) album is a much better dance album.

What I like best about "Confessions..." is the way each song flows into the next. It really allows for a kind of cohesiveness that you can't deny.

I wish the whole album sounded more like "Future Lovers." To me, THAT is the real dance music. It's HARD.

CJ Wed, Nov 16, 2005 at 06:39 PM EST

First off, the naysayers in here are laughable. Call her old or whatever, that is juvenile and is a reflection on the poster not Madonna. Good music is good music, whether it is by a 20 yr old or 60 yr old. This album delivers. It is her fun album. For those that say Madonna steals or other such BS. Madonna is highly regarded by both critics AND her fellow musicians. She is consistently ranked among the Greatest Women of All Time in music and Greatest Artists of all time. She has produced 2 CD's considered masterpieces, Like A Prayer and Ray Of Light. Madonna is also highly regarded as a songwriter( though that isn't apparent on the new CD). If you want good grooves, some funky music, some hard beats, great melodies, this CD is well worth buying. Madonna has been making great music for decades. She has worked with a variety of people on her CD's. It isn't a coincidence that their best work is always with her. The common factor is of course Madonna. She is a musical genius. That is clear and backed up by critics. Of note, on the Most Acclaimed Artists website, which compiles the most critically acclaimed artists of all time, she does extremely well. Eat it and weep haters.

i love new york, other cities do not float like a cork Wed, Nov 16, 2005 at 05:56 PM EST

Confessions is great! Practically every cut could be a single. Who cares if New York was made to rhyme with dork? I'm too busy dancing to think about it. To say that this album is bad because of lousy lyrics is like saying Titanic was a flop because of the lousy dialogue.

Why Madge? Wed, Nov 16, 2005 at 03:53 PM EST

Why do they call her Madge? is it because that she now looks like the old lady that makes people soak their hands in Palmolive?
Just wondering.

GOFF Wed, Nov 16, 2005 at 03:36 PM EST

Here is some more deep and powerfull messages from this album, from New York

"If you don't like my attitude
Then you can F off
Just go to Texas
Isn't that where they golf"

GOFF?

She is done Wed, Nov 16, 2005 at 03:32 PM EST

The critics didn't pan her for getting political, that was all her excuse. The real reason was more like:
"I drink a soy latte, I get a double shotte". American life stunk but she made excuses, this album isn't much better.

Jeannie Buxo Wed, Nov 16, 2005 at 03:19 PM EST

Madonnas come a long way from her start in 1982 and she has with every album led us through very personal experiences and lessons in her life. Through her music on Confessions on a Dancefloor, she is giving not only amazing dance songs to groove to but very powerful messages. I read that some critics dont like it when she does that but thats what Madonnas always done, its just that they are paying more attention to the music than ever before. All hail the Queen of the Dancefloor. Grade= A+

Danny T Wed, Nov 16, 2005 at 03:11 PM EST

Those of us in the "underground music world" are not impressed with M.

Madonna is notorious for ripping people off in this genre and others. Madonna as very few people know is very internet savy!, she communicates threw email and chat and gets her idea's from other online musican's which is very well know.

"The son of a fashion photographer has sued Madonna, saying his late father's images were copied by the singer in a set of videos for her song "Hollywood." Samuel Bourdin brought the lawsuit Friday in U.S. District Court in Manhattan, saying he holds the rights to the images created by his father, Guy Bourdin, who died in 1991"

Wow I am getting a different picture of Madonna already! "AP reports that Madonna is being sued for directing and production fees from her Reinvention Tour" Hum Im seeing a pattern here! "Madonna is facing a $300000 lawsuit for not paying the director of a recent television special."

And I belive in my opinion that is is just low when you steal idea's from musical artist that are trying to make something of themselves!

Here is a very sad example of this!

"Aisha has filed suit in Miami to stop Madonna, a known and chronic copyright infringer and plagiarizer, from using any more of the works in her copyrighted multi-million dollar valued music, film and literary catalog that she has already made use of in criminal violation of numerous U.S. and United Nations laws and treaties.

A portion of the proceeds from any potential court awarded monetary judgment will be donated to several charities and made public via Aisha's web site.

The problem began with Madonna stealing from Aisha's 2001 released copyrighted songs, photos and her widely read Sound Off Column in clear view of Aisha's site visitors, who began bombarding her with emails asking if she'd noticed how Madonna was stealing her work for use in her 2003 flop "American Life."

However, the problem progressed to something far worse - a commissioned campaign of invasion of privacy, illegal surveillance, wiretapping, harassment, stalking, assault, grand theft larceny and corporate theft.

Madonna's lawyer is Bertram "Bert" Fields, who is also the lawyer for the Church of Scientology ( several members of which were arrested and imprisoned by the FBI for wiretapping, among other charges ) and is himself at the center of an ongoing FBI probe for the illegal wiretapping of his famous clients’ legal opponents and publicly outspoken enemies.

Wow Madonna, you tables are turning. Very sad indeed! Why don't you give Fabian some support and listen to his music and think about the style in which the songs are written and produced, and even the lyrical content and then listen to Madonna's and ask yourself, could this be happening again? http://www.soundclick.com/fabian

Madonna is to dance music what Garth Brooks is to country. She needs to stop trying to be so "essential" and do what she does best: overproduced clubland trifles for people who like their "hits" shoved down their throats by DJ Numb-nuts.

You know that not everyone is a gay man right?

Derek Wed, Nov 16, 2005 at 12:08 PM EST

This album is absolutely fantastic and very contagious. She continues to amaze me as to how she can still come up with the hits after all this time. Those naysayers on this probably haven't even heard the album and are surely Mariah Scarey fans.

Michael Wed, Nov 16, 2005 at 11:58 AM EST

All of you naysayers are obviously Cher and Mariah lovers. Why even bother responding? This album rocks!!

SheBlows Wed, Nov 16, 2005 at 11:46 AM EST

Absolute garbage and has been since the early 90's. How about another round of Kool Moe Dee's wanker in your face, eh, Ethel?

Ars_Caracas Wed, Nov 16, 2005 at 11:30 AM EST

Great production. Great album. The lyrics... well, who cares about the lyrics if all you want to do is dance? Those that don't like this CD probably are Cher fans. Anyway, Madonna has been at it for more than 20 years...! Give her credit folks... the list of Madonnas-wanna-be that have come and go during the same period of time is a long, long one...Britney? Christina? Will they be around 25 years from now?. Christina has a great voice, but as we all know that's not enough these days... Can't wait for her (Madonna's) tour in 2006.

Jellytot Wed, Nov 16, 2005 at 11:03 AM EST

dull......boring........unoriginal.........if you want to hear some vocally infused electronic/house productions, go buy some vinyl at your nearest underground record shop.......i wish pop stars would stick to what they know best -> crappy pop music.......Madonna had her day in the the 80's and early 90's......i think she should stick to concentrating on Kabballah and childrens books now.......in fact thats what this album amounts to lyrically.....a children's book.......

RickT Wed, Nov 16, 2005 at 11:02 AM EST

Madonna's new song is awesome! I like the beat! I have a feeling the remixes are going to be fabulous also. She's still got it! We love her!

djm Wed, Nov 16, 2005 at 10:46 AM EST

I am really enjoying this cd - I listened to "Get Together" as loud as I could this am on my way to work - excellent song! I also love "Hung Up" (the cd version is much better than the single I got from i-Tunes, or maybe it's just that the song is growing on me), "Let It Will Be", and "Like It or Not". Some of the other songs will grow on me I am sure. In all I'd say that there are songs I love and songs I like - and none that I hate (even with the empty lyrics that are at times laughable). I can't say that about any of the other cd's I bought this year.

This is crap. I listen to it once and could not put myself through the torture a gain. AWFUL lyrics....dated sound! Time for Madonna to retire to her English garden.

JrsyGrl Wed, Nov 16, 2005 at 09:59 AM EST

I can't help but laugh every time I see the clip of her video where she's doing the strange hip-dancing. She looks like what my friend does when she's goofing around.

Tim Wed, Nov 16, 2005 at 09:33 AM EST

Album of the year for me... I love "Let It Will Be" and "Jump"!!

Not good Wed, Nov 16, 2005 at 08:35 AM EST

She makes K-Fed's lyrics seem like genius, time to hang it up.

Disco is dead Wed, Nov 16, 2005 at 08:28 AM EST

This is terrible, it will please her core base of fans though; gay men.

rene Wed, Nov 16, 2005 at 07:56 AM EST

100% great. And using ABBA's sample in the lead single, very smart move: the best song on the entire CD, I can not stop listening since I bought it. And I agree, even better than "Ray of Light".

I love this entirely but mostly because it's Valarie Cherish resurrected! I swear, if HBO had kept The Comeback, this would have been a great plot line for the season opener.

george Wed, Nov 16, 2005 at 01:23 AM EST

it's her best album since LIKE A PRAYER. damn, it took that long for her to do a great album.

Bo Tue, Nov 15, 2005 at 11:14 PM EST

I bought the album today and after listening to it a few times, I'm in awe of the versatility of this woman. I grew up dancing to "Into the Groove" and "Holiday" and feel as though I've come full circle with my favorite single off the album, "Hung up." Go Madonna! You're simply amazing, even with your diva-like attitude.

JK Tue, Nov 15, 2005 at 07:25 PM EST

I agree this is a wicked dance album, and Future Lovers might be the sexiest song since ... hmmm, well, in a reeeally long time. But when it comes to lyrics like, "I don't like cities, but I like New York/ Other places make me feel like a dork" you can't help being pulled outta the groove and laughing out loud! I'll even go so far as to call that track the only misfire on the album. Most of her 'poetry' would make a self-indulged teenager nod in full understanding, but Madge should realize she's also speaking to the adults who grew up with her career. All in all one of her best, if you can forgive the lyrics.

i've guiltily always been a sucker for Madonna's "religious" songs (ohhh shanti....) and i do enjoy isaac. any/every song on this album is like peanut butter, they get stuck in your head and refuse to exit! i am liking it more and more as i listen- but oh the lyrics! they have always been pedestrian, but god they are painful! not only can i guess what rhyming lyric will come next, i actually burst out laughing a few times.

lloyd kandasammy Tue, Nov 15, 2005 at 05:57 PM EST

absolutely great dance music madge has come and she has proven why she is the undisputed queen of music whitney and mariah eat your half diva hearts out she will always be no 1

marty Tue, Nov 15, 2005 at 04:18 PM EST

BEST ALBUM OF THE YEAR - come on people, admit it. THis thing is great!!!! Kinda surprised myself at how much I like ISAAC (was sure it'd be a clunker but its great). And I LOVE NY is rockin'!!!!!!

Carlos A. Tue, Nov 15, 2005 at 03:29 PM EST

I've been listening this album since it leaked 2 wks ago and i just cannot stop playing it. As a Madonna fan i am amazed at how she can still surprise me with a fantastic new album. It is my fav Madonna album now, second to ROL.
Sorry is such a great song, destined to become a Madonna Classic.
Grab it!!!

Cara Tue, Nov 15, 2005 at 02:26 PM EST

Have been listening online at AOL, really love it - especially Jump, an instant classic.

Michael Tue, Nov 15, 2005 at 02:21 PM EST

JUMP is one of my favorite Madonna songs now. The rest are amazing as well.

Patrick Tue, Nov 15, 2005 at 01:36 PM EST

Ammazing production! Love how the songs connect to each other (its non-stop to those who doesn't know). "Sorry" the rumoured second single will be a classic Madonna song for sure. This album is definitely in line with "Like a Prayer" and "Ray of Light". Congratulations M! You did it again!

Kimmie G Tue, Nov 15, 2005 at 01:34 PM EST

I can NOT wait to pick this up! I've been listening to it on line (VH1.com), and am loving it!! And the cover art? Brilliant.

Jason Tue, Nov 15, 2005 at 01:27 PM EST

Best album in years. Lyrically it's a little like middle school English class ("I Love New York"). She still can't let go of some of the themes from American Life ("How High"), but overall ever song is great. Except for "Issac" which is a bore and once again pounds us over the head with her religion.

frank Tue, Nov 15, 2005 at 12:58 PM EST

madonna's new album is smart and exactly what her long time fans have wanted for oh soooo long. It's a beautiful piece of work worthy of everyone to enjoy. congratulations madonna

Mario Tue, Nov 15, 2005 at 12:37 PM EST

This album is fantastic..pure adrenaline and fun... I love Sorry, Hung Up, Forbidden Love, Jump, and goes on and on!!! I Love it... Madonna, you did it again!

Ariel Tue, Nov 15, 2005 at 12:25 PM EST

The production of the album is fantastic -- but yes, some of the lyrics are laughable. I also tire of songs about being famous. (Yes, Madge, we get it: It's not a cake walk! Ok!) But still, as an only casual Madonna fan, I have to say that this is my favorite album of her's ever ... I think I like it even better than Ray of Light.

Carly Tue, Nov 15, 2005 at 12:24 PM EST

On the whole I like the album, but I agree that there's a few clunkers in there... for example, "I Love New York" and the first three songs after "Hung Up." But "Let It Will Be" and "Issac" make up for it, as does the finale, "Like It Or Not." It wasn't what I expected, yet that's turned out to (mostly) be a good thing.

eric Tue, Nov 15, 2005 at 12:21 PM EST

It's very slick, very cool and full of engery but I don't hear the "fun." Granted, the single's pretty catchy but the innocent with no message fun of her early work continues to be the missing element.

Nick Tue, Nov 15, 2005 at 11:49 AM EST

Madonna's new album is fantastic! Pure fun and energy from start to finish. Fave tracks right off, "Hung Up", "Get Together" "Push" "Sorry" and "How High" Nice job Madonna!

J.Me Tue, Nov 15, 2005 at 11:42 AM EST

Madonna's crafted an album of pure bliss, that will rank right up there with her "Like A Prayer" and "Ray Of Light" albums.
