Madonna and Carrie Underwood in the steel cage!

Nov 22, 2005, 03:47 PM | by Michael Slezak

Categories: 'American Idol', Madonna, Music

14426__cu_lTime goes by. So slowly. Time goes by. So slowly.

So slowly. So slowly. So slowly. So slowly. So slowly. So slowly. So slowly. So slowly. So slowly. So slowly. So slowly. So slowly. So slowly.

Oh, sorry, PopWatchers, I was just gettin' into the groove listening to Madonna's new Confessions on a Dancefloor, while simultaneously stressing out, wondering if Madge will debut at No. 1 on Billboard's album chart this week. To get there, she'll have to outsell American Idol Carrie Underwood's Some Hearts, and let me just say, if there's any justice in the music world, then gosh darn it, she will.

Then again, I really believed America was gonna do the right thing last May and crown Bo Bice as the rightful Season 4 champ over the Oklahoma farm girl, and you saw how that ended up.

Who do you think will triumph in this battle of the divas? The 22-year-old countrified Idol or the controversial pop star who's old enough to be her mother? Weigh in now. Results (gulp) tomorrow.

Carrie is A really good singer so Buzzs off

Caleb Sun, Jun 24, 2007 at 09:27 PM EST

Who's this Carrie Underwood and why would anyone compare her to Madonna, who is listed in the book of world records as the most successful female artist in history and listed on Forbes magazine's richest women in the world as #4? Not to mention her last tour was the highest grossing tour by a female artist in the history of music. But you're right, she is soooooo over with.

Here is carrie performing wasted on SNL saturday night

Holly girl, you need to learn how to spell.

Holly Sun, Aug 20, 2006 at 11:50 AM EST

This debate is really interesting lmao!! i just read some of it and im shocked to be onest!! I absolutely love Carrie, she is an amazing singer i don't care what anyone says she is ammazin, and i usually hate country music! but i love Carrie! Maddonna is also good tho! every1 is putting both of them down but i bet they both can sing better than you so u shud stop sayin it cos its really harsh!! Thanks for reading my comment!! I love Carrie underwood!!

Jenny Fri, Aug 18, 2006 at 07:15 PM EST

I hope Carrie keeps her respect. All the wild partying will only get her old looking skin before her time. She is way better than Madonna any day!

Just Me Thu, Aug 17, 2006 at 01:08 AM EST

Yes, Madonna is the best of the trash heap.

Indianafan Wed, Aug 16, 2006 at 10:47 PM EST

Happy Birthday Madonna. You are the best. :)

Juju Wed, Aug 16, 2006 at 03:51 PM EST

Whoever thinks Madonna is a superior talent compared to Carrie, has their brain waves off the chart! Madonna could not even begin to hit the high notes that Carrie can. I hope when Carrie's career is over, she will know it, and not resort to cheap demeaning gimmicks.

Just Me Mon, Aug 14, 2006 at 12:49 AM EST

Jessica:
You are ranting and raving, calm down girl! You claim to be an A student. Why is it that your i is not I. You do know that Americans capitalize I.

jessica Tue, Aug 8, 2006 at 08:28 PM EST

i agree w/ukebase, just because u dont' like carrie doesn't give u the right to be so mean, she's a great, kind, beautiful person, and has a great talent, she's my favorite singer yet! and madonna, is good, but face it she's old!! i'm not meaning to be mean to her but maybe she should retire, and carrie's not some ditsy country girl! i'm from the country so i dont' apprectiate that! and she's super smart, she just has blonde moments! face it we all do! she was an all a student and was in the National Honor Society. and so am i, so stop dissing on country girls and carrie cause just saying all that shows what kind of person u r! plus carrie has much more great qualities and a history to be a better hero and role model than madonna, just cause she's been in the buisness longer means nothing!

Nancy Walker Wed, Jul 19, 2006 at 05:30 PM EST

I must admit, at first I did not like Carrie, because I was hoping Bo would win. But Carrie's CD is the best one besides Kelly Clarkson's music. She is definitely a star. The song writers did her justice. I still love Bo, so I hope his next album will be a winner.

Nic Sun, Jul 2, 2006 at 05:43 PM EST

Madonna's album sucks, I'm glad to see a talented girl like Carrie (even though she's country) out sell and out rank Madonna in album and single sales, Madonna's too old to have a hit album because she's done everything and everything controversial. 3 flop albums in a decade, the grandma needs to give it up!!!!!!!!

Lana Sun, Jun 11, 2006 at 03:42 AM EST

Madge still is and WILL always be the queen!

ukebase Mon, May 22, 2006 at 05:44 PM EST

MADONNA IS STARTING HER LATEST CONCERT INSULTING THE LEADER OF HER OWN COUNTRY WITH PATHETIC STAGE JOKES,WHO DOES SHE SUPPORT?,MAYBE TO DEPERATLEY GET MONEY FROM THE COUNTRY SHE IS SINGING IN AND S__TTING ON AMERICANS AND THE DEVELOPED WORLD,SHE IS TOO OLD TO PERFORM,GOOD RIDDANCE.

ukebase Mon, May 22, 2006 at 05:40 PM EST

Madonna now in may 2006 is showing that she is a traitor to her OWN COUNTRY,desperatly trying to make all the rest of society buy her music,47 YEARS OLD she is and singing her original songs, pathetic and sad.

BILLY Sun, Mar 26, 2006 at 10:07 PM EST

OK... LOOK... CARRIE WON AI... MAINLY CUZ SHE IS THE AMERICAN GIRL NEXT DOOR... AND BO IS A CRACK HEAD... (CNN SAID SO)... HE WAS ARRESTED IN 2001 I THINK IT WAS... AND CARRIE HAS A TRIPLE PLATINUM ALBUM YOU BITCH... SO DON'T DIS CARRIE!!! CARRIE'S SINGLE STAYED #1 FOR 6 WEEKS AND JUST RELEASED ANOTHER ONE THAT THEY ARE PREDICTING WILL STAY LONGER... Marshall Thu, Mar 9, 2006 at 04:50 PM EST

CARRIE UNDERWOOD!!!!!!!!!!!! YAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAY

Chelle Sat, Feb 18, 2006 at 08:00 AM EST

Madonna is great well was in the 80's! I love Carrie she's a great singer and i love her album. Carrie's just living her dream and it looks like its on the right track, she deserves everything good cause she seems like a great girl. Carrie's HOT and beautiful and Madonna's Not!
(at least Carrie could sing and dosent need a pre-recorded track to mime to)

kurt Wed, Jan 25, 2006 at 11:49 PM EST

carrie underwood is BORED SING!!!!!

erkel Wed, Jan 18, 2006 at 11:45 PM EST

Carrie is, by far, the biggest winner in the U.S. Madonna's CD is in the top 20 for the 9th week: when, however, did that become a "flop?" Then again, Madonna still has the number one album all over the world, something Carrie will never accomplish. I personally like both of them and think they are amazingly talented women.

Christina Warren Wed, Dec 21, 2005 at 05:24 PM EST

LMAO!! Just saw on Billboard, Carrie Underwood's sold over 1.1 million and Madonna 800k! Looks like Madonna won the first round but Carrie's winning the war.

Too funny because Carrie Underwood is country and Madonna is not but I think it's funny!! LOL!!

ashok Tue, Dec 20, 2005 at 12:53 AM EST

just love madonna. I DO

Thyda Tue, Dec 13, 2005 at 03:38 PM EST

Wow, I really don't understand the debate here...

Comparing a pop icon who's been in the music industry for years with a fresh newcomer who sings country music??? Come on! How old was Carrie when Madonna had her first hit album? If you want to bash Carrie, first, listen to her CD before, second, be sure you are a country music fan before complaining, and third, remember this is Carrie first CD ever since her win (only 7 months ago!).

Also, if you are a mega Madonna fan, it probably means that you don't like country music so please, stop putting Carrie down for nothing. Helloo? Two totally different genre of music.

For a person who always hated country music and who refuses to listen to it, I have to admit Carrie quite opened me to this genre. Her first single "Jesus take the wheel" is amazing and the lyrics are very deep, I love it.

Ok, Carrie debut second in the pop chart, wait does that mean it's not good? Come on, if she would have outsold Madonna now I would start asking questions! Remember that she is a total newcomer in the music industry! And the charts that matters for her the most is probably the country charts, where she debuted at number 1 and still is right now. How amazing is that?

I'm Canadian and I love this American Idol ;)

Louse Tue, Dec 13, 2005 at 03:04 AM EST

What a crazy article! America did do the right thing and chose Carrie! It wasn't even close!

Go listen to Bo's new CD, then listen to Carrie's CD. America got it right! The Bo you saw on Idol is NOT on this CD. It's a cheap pop copycat CD.

Madonna rocks BTW!!

Jen Mon, Dec 12, 2005 at 11:19 PM EST

Where's the new article to show how Carrie Underwood has beaten Madonna's last week sales and is about to outsell Madonna's US sales once this week is over. Too bad Madonna had to take number one. Carrie's CD is going strong, strong strong and Madonna's is dropping, dropping, dropping, down the charts! Obviously Madonna's a smart business woman. She released 4 versions of her CD for digital downloads knowing her hard-core fans would buy more than one version. Madonna was lucky this time but Carrie will outsell Madonna in the US on this CD, mark my words.

MADONNASUCKS Sun, Dec 11, 2005 at 03:06 PM EST

MADONNA,HER UGLY FAT ASS KIDS,AND HER HUSBAND ARE WORTH SHIT. AT LEAST CARRIE CAN KEEP HER FUCKING PANTS ON LONG ENOUGH TO SING. MADONNA IS THE BIGGEST WHORE ON THIS DAMN EARTH.

AND THE ONLY REASON MADONNA IS STILL SELLING 4 RECORDS A YEAR? HER SLUTTY,POP TART FANS WHO WORK STREET CORNERS TO SUPPORT HER. YEAH,THAT'S REALLY SOMETHING TO BE PROUD OF,JACKASSES.

kenneth Sun, Dec 11, 2005 at 09:07 AM EST

Carrie who? Oh the AI winner... Rarely anyone knows or even remembers her throughout Asia.

Madonna? My dad's idol since 1984, mine at 1998 and still gaining respect and fans worldwide in 2005.

Pat Thu, Dec 1, 2005 at 05:53 PM EST

I'm not gonna go back and forth. Madonna is good and Carrie is good. Madonna has had a great career and is still going. Carrie will have a great career too. I made my point that Madonna fans are ripping Carrie and you made yours that Carrie fans are ripping Madonna. I do think however certain comments made by fans can turn you off to an artist. I never said it was mature, lol, that's just how I felt after reading some of the things that were said. I'm sure sooner or later I'll get it. So I'm ending it here, theyre both good, lol.

Mario Thu, Dec 1, 2005 at 05:44 PM EST

I never denied I was a fan of Madonna, I think that's quite obvious from my previous posts. What my posts lack is offensive name calling or "ripping" into Carrie. I don't see how pointing out the flaws of your initial post (elaborating on the comments against Carrie but not following up on the comments against Madonna - that's not being biased, simply pointing out the obvious) is having a double standard. Sure, I made some snarky remarks re: Jesus taking the wheel but that's not a stab at Carrie or Carrie's fans, it's taking a stab at the holier than thou crowd who think that because Carrie made a song mentioning Jesus, that it's her they need to support.

Ultimately, nothing we say here really matters in the larger scheme of things because they both have made their money and for what it's worth, I hope Carrie has a long and fruitful career.. I don't plan on buying her CD, not because I like Madonna or because she's Carrie or because she mentioned Jesus but because I simply don't like country music, plain and simple.

I get so sick of having to point out when people are hypocritical with their comments or make uninformed judgements on one thing or another; you said it yourself, you hadn't read through all the posts before making your initial entry.

As for not buying Madonna's CD because of her fans, well.. sorry if this is going to offend you but does that sound mature at all? The only one missing out will be you because believe it or not, this is a good CD - not trying to sway you in either way, you will do whatever you want to do but how ridiculous does that sound, to not buy something because a group of people whom you don't know, won't care or don't even matter in the first place said something you found offensive??

Pat Thu, Dec 1, 2005 at 11:12 AM EST

Mario, my argument is not weak. I'm not hear to make a fight, it's quite obvious you're a Madonna fan so you can think what you want. You are doing the exact same thing you just told me I did. You just told me about a double standard. The thing you were worried about was that Carrie's fans'comments about Madonna not being brought up. I never called her a "crotch grabbing hag" or whatever you said. I happen to like Madonna also. Now that I read it all, I do see some bad comments about Madonna as well. But this is not the only place I have heard bad things about Carrie from Madonna's fans. I believe I know the reason why, someone already touched on it, Carrie made it a big competition for #1 so all of her "good fans" decided to go on a rip about Carrie this week. I don't support ripping of Madonna or Carrie. But I have seen far more Carrie rips then I have Madonna rips. I hope Madonna does great. As I stated in my last post her fans are the ones that turned me sort of against her this week not her.

Mario Thu, Dec 1, 2005 at 09:10 AM EST

Pat, just come out and say you don't want to support Madonna, period. Your argument is so weak when you focus on what Madonna fans have been saying about Carrie but then refuse to address the same being said about Madonna from Carrie fans. Do you think it's proper, fair or even polite to call someone you don't know a "crotch grabbing slut" "hag" etc? Your post displays the double standard I mentioned before, Carrie/country/Jesus fans are quick to point the finger and blame others but always refuse to look at themselves or find ways to excuse the questionable actions of those who happen to agree with them, regardless of how wrong, offensive or misinformed their comments may be.

Pat Wed, Nov 30, 2005 at 11:40 AM EST

I have seen a lot of the Madonna fans ripping Carrie for no reason. If you don't like her don't listen to her. I like Madonna, she has been around for how many years and is huge. So I'm not going to say anything about her. I like Carrie also, I think she is gonna be awesome and I really didn't care who outsold who. But now that I read some of the things that Madonna fans are saying and some of the stuff being said on here. I hope Carrie wipes the floor with her. Not because of Madonna, because of her big mouth fans. Once her big mouth fans shut their mouths maybe ill consider buying her cd, until then you lost one of her and im sure many to come fans.

MAMA Tue, Nov 29, 2005 at 05:19 PM EST

The comments that I have read must have, (for the most part), been written by children. When you all grow up, you will appreciate music for what it sounds like to your ears. Not for what the singer was wearing or how old he or she is. madonna and Carrie both have something non of us have, a multimillon dollar recording contract. Therefore all real logic dictates that they both have musical talent. Buy it or don't buy it but enough with the meaningless personal attacks. Neither of these women care what you think of them as people because you don't know them. They just hope that you like their music (art) and buy their CD.

carrie s a good singer ...but do you really think she'd be thriving in 10 - 15 yrs (or less)...come on guys...how long has Madonna been around...and we still love her. Carrie = Madonna .....i dont't think so.

kent Sun, Nov 27, 2005 at 12:33 PM EST

madonna parked her bike on a swingset.

brittany Sun, Nov 27, 2005 at 09:45 AM EST

Carrie is better than her to me any day.. At least she can accually sing unlike M who can only say time goes by so slowly..

kris Sat, Nov 26, 2005 at 09:16 PM EST

OHHHH LORD all the drama..once again for the 100th time in madonna's long twenty plus something career...SHE SELLS WHEN THE MUSIC IS GOOD...American Life any1???? she's no more trashy than say mariah wearing the outfit she wore this past thanksgiving halftime show or splashing around in a pool during the VMA's or Janet bearing all,, THE ONLY diffrence is madonna never claimed to be the "wholesome pure perfect female" FROM DAY 1!!! where as mariah burst onto the scene (same as crackhead hostoun) playing the "all perfect wholsesome female singer" ..AFTER THE MASSES bought,,yes BOUGHT their act and pulling the wool over your faces,,their true emergence arrives,,,mariah..now stating this was always who she was,,short shorts,,,clevage and looking like shes looking at a mirror at herself in all these new videos,,,whitney,,becoming "americas all american sweetheart" did and still does have a drug addiciton,,in 1989 during promoting rythm nation,,janet jackson (dressed from toes right to the top of her neck) dressed in black)says she would never use her sexual side in music or videos,,UM flash foward to 1993's "IF" NUFF SAID,,,MADONNA DAY 1 never pulled any punches and till this day has never made any public apologies for ANY OF IT,,and as for yout tv contest winners,,,well good luck to them,,,thye didnt have to sweat and work and struggle like madonna or even mariah..and for those who say madonna sells becuz she's wearing a pink leotard in her new video PLZZZ your not only cluless (not to mention probably 15) your an IDIOT!!! she sells cuz she is good,,she has NOT LASTED by changing her hair style or color,,by her style of clothing or being provactive HELL half the things they do now are just as bad if not worse!! we all can only hope if these new up and comers and tv contest winners will decide to mold themselves after madonna,,,strong,,sexy,,,talented,,unapologetic and most of all ENTERTAINING!!!! Madonna ,,THANKS for the fantastic memories and KEEP THEM COMING!!!!!!!!!

Sabrina Sat, Nov 26, 2005 at 06:16 PM EST

Am I missing something? Exactly what does Madonna have in common with Carrie Underwood, other than being female? They sing different styles of music, have distinctly different personalities, and are unlikely to appeal to the same fan base. If an ipod can hold 5000 songs, two female artists can produce music without all this antagonism.

G.Johnson Sat, Nov 26, 2005 at 09:15 AM EST

I don't hate Madonna, but some of her fans comments where pretty nasty regarding Carrie during this little week long competition for most album sales. And it certainly caused me not to purchase her (Madonna's)newest album.

I think that their very rudeness and quickness to attack shows their fear. Madonna is slowly fading away.........and they - down deep- even realize this that she will be replaced in the limelight of musical stardom by a group of up and coming younger females. Carrie certainly being part of that new group. Such is life.........always,evetually it is in everything" out with the old-in with the new."

Love live the new girls reign.

Jude Sat, Nov 26, 2005 at 07:55 AM EST

Carrie Underwood is a fantastic new talent, can't stop listening to her CD "Some Hearts" I say she is going to shine in the music world. It seems the fans of other singers freaking out and
putting Carrie down can be compared to a new beautiful incredibly talented girl moving into a town and all the women hate her because they find her threatening? If this is not true, then why all the fuss people?

Sharon Fri, Nov 25, 2005 at 02:04 PM EST

Carrie fans never said Carrie was more popular than Madonna. Why do Madonna fans have to continually write things when no one said that! Madonna has been and is a global star for 20 years!

Why are Madonna fans so nasty? Carrie fans are all over the world. Sure, there are many countries that don't get the American Idol broadcasts, country music or magazines that Carrie has been featured in. Carrie was a college student unkown only a year ago. She just had the highest debut by ANY country singer EVER! Can you at least give her a little respect?

Madonna is world famous and there is no need top put down Carrie to make Madonna fans feel better. It's great that Madonna has been around for so long. She's got a lot of fans. I was one too but then as I got older I got turned off more and more by her antics. BUT I still give the woman credit. Putting down a new singer who has just begun is not nice.

Country music stars generally have very long careers. With a voice and looks like Carrie Underwood has, she'll be around for as long as she chooses to sing.

ArmandoCcs Fri, Nov 25, 2005 at 12:51 PM EST

to all carrie fans... let's wait 25 year from now and see where Ms Underwood is in 2030. Madonna has been at it since 1980!!!!
When Madonna asks you to "Jump" you just have to ask "How High"...

ArmandoCcs Fri, Nov 25, 2005 at 12:41 PM EST

¿Carrie fans around the world? Let me tell you. I live in Venezuela. NOBODY knows who she is... American Idol is on (cable) TV (on the Sony channel)... but still she's just someone that was on that show and won. That's it. American Idol CDs aren't even released here... and much less if it is country music.... So, no Carrie Underwood fans 'around the world'... In the other hand Madonna is #1 on the music charts.

Joyce Thu, Nov 24, 2005 at 11:56 PM EST

Madonna has a personality and still exudes danger and unpredictability. She is down and still dirty enough to interest her fans.

Carrie, while lovely, is just a lovely face with a nice voice and willing to be molded into a Country Rock Star.

Big Bang Thu, Nov 24, 2005 at 01:31 PM EST

You Carrie fans are flattering her SO MUCH. Come on! Comparing her to Madonna? Thats the best compliment Carrie could ever receive. Madonna doesnt have to prove anything, she's an icon, she's a legend, the album is currently no.1 in 25 countries, has sold 3.5 millions on Confessions's first week.
Good luck to Carrie she looks sweet.

Carlos A. Thu, Nov 24, 2005 at 11:03 AM EST

But that is my point Rocky, not everyone in the world cares about that type of music :o)

Rocky Thu, Nov 24, 2005 at 01:49 AM EST

When Carrie fans talk about fans around the world, it's obviously in places where Idol has been on the tv! How else would people know who she is unless they heard her on tv or her song on the radio???

Africa, Indonesia, Phillipines, etc. Places that aired Idol or play Carrie's first song. Carrie has fans there and is just starting!
And no one is saying Madonna is not a world wide star! Of course she is!!

Yeah, I guess Mexico is real big on American Idol and Country music then..duh!

Carlos A. Wed, Nov 23, 2005 at 11:33 PM EST

I just don't understan why Carrie's fan keep saying "around the world"... uhmmmmm NOT TRUE, i mean, c'mon, i live right in the border with the U.S. in Mexico and i ASSURE you that NO ONE has any idea who she is, NO ONE. Good for Carrie to have a nice openning week, but she's just a local singer.

If u wanna talk about a real STAR/ARTIST, well u know who :o)

Rich Wed, Nov 23, 2005 at 08:07 PM EST

Personally, I am a huge fan of Carrie's. Don't get me wrong, there was a time, in the 80's that I was a fan of Madonna's. To be fair, I haven't heard Madonna's new album. I'm not really motivated to. But, I would encourage those of you who are dissing Carrie without hearing her album to reconsider your snideness. Carrie is a fantastic singer, be it country or pop. She is extremely easy on the eyes, but that's beside the point. She's also an extremely genuine and kind-hearted person. She makes being nice cool! Probably, also beside the point. What is on point is this: don't sell Carrie short. She has millions of fans around the world and her fan base is growing as we speak. Her sales figures don't lie. People love Carrie, and for good reason. Her vocals have a range which are awe-inspiring. Give Carrie's Some Hearts album a chance and you will not be disappointed!

Carlos A. Wed, Nov 23, 2005 at 07:51 PM EST

Well, Rick, tell that to the thousands of people who bought Confessions this week. Madonna has the number one album all over the world, she just sold 3.5 million copies all over...... how many has miss only in the U.S. will be a hit Underwear sold....... Thanks :o)

rick Wed, Nov 23, 2005 at 07:41 PM EST

For all you Carrie naysayers. It was just announced today that Carrie's new CD is #1 on the country charts and #2 on the pop charts for next week. Give the girl her due. What is up with America that we only like the people with "rough" images. Just because she beat out Bo doesn't mean she is terrible. Remember millions of Americans voted for her! And she won't replace Kelli who what it is worth. Are you naysayers just jealous? As for Madonna, she is old news.

Jeffrey Wed, Nov 23, 2005 at 07:10 PM EST

I was late! Jeez I was late for this debate haha! Now that the results are in where are the Carrie fans go??? Hello! Anyone???
Enough said! Madonna is HOT!

James C Wed, Nov 23, 2005 at 04:40 PM EST

Hooray for Madonna!!! She's also #1 on MTV's TRL! (Madonna fans, please go to MTV.com to vote for her.)

I wish radio would play HUNG UP more, though. Seems like it's never playing here in San Diego. I'm going to go call the radio station right now...

Rocky Wed, Nov 23, 2005 at 01:54 PM EST

Congratulations Madonna!! Number one!! Congratulations Carrie Underwood. I just read Carrie's was biggest debut every by a country singer!! AND biggest debut of new artists this year!!

Go ladies!!! Rock on!!

Anthony (Los Angeles, Ca) Wed, Nov 23, 2005 at 01:32 PM EST

Well, not to spoil the fun, I just found out on Billboard.com that Madonna's album: "Confessions On A Dance Floor" indeed did debut at No. 1 selling around 350,000 copies while Carrie Underwood did pretty good herself by selling around 315,000 copies of her album "Some Hearts." This marks her sixth No. 1 album on the billboard charts. Congrats to Madge on this one and for Carrie (who had a decent debut as well.)

Rocky Wed, Nov 23, 2005 at 01:19 PM EST

Kelly fans needs to quit it!! Y'all attacking Carrie here and posting over and over again on the other sites. Kelly's a megastar and would be disgusted to hear y'all constantly beating on Carrie. What are y'all so worried about Carrie for? She's country and wont' even be on the same charts as Kelly!!

Tracy Wed, Nov 23, 2005 at 01:16 PM EST

Selling a lot of records should not be the only thing to make someone sucessful! I mean look at Britney, she's sold a lot of records so you dont' have to sing well to sell!! Look at some of other junk on the radio, no talent!!

Bravo to Madonna and Carrie. I hope Carrie can be around for 20 years like Madonna. They are both completely different and don't need this nonsense!

I love Madge! Wed, Nov 23, 2005 at 01:15 PM EST

all Madonna haters need to get over it cause she's #1 baby!!! wannabe-country Carrie can take her one "hit" wonder act back to Kansas or wherever she's from... Kelly's the only real American Idol!

Lisa Wed, Nov 23, 2005 at 01:13 PM EST

Why is everyone comparing these 2 ladies??? Country singers DO NOT sell like Madonna, for the most part!! It's crazy and there is no sense fighting over it.

Good job Madonna, I like the Dance CD and good job Carrie, I like the singing on your cd.

Kevin Wed, Nov 23, 2005 at 01:09 PM EST

I hate country but I seen this Country Idol live and in person and her voice is real good. Both are eye candy and both have talent but I see The country Idol winning this race. Carrie will be commercials eventually she does have a nice smile.

Andrew Wed, Nov 23, 2005 at 01:08 PM EST

Madonna debutted in Canada at #1 with 74,000 copies-- 2nd best debut sales wise there this ear-- behind coldplay.

Madonna was #1 in the UK... and I'm sure countless of other countries as well.

By the end of the year-- Confessions will be selling Carrie's album 10 to 1 worldwide.

and Carrie is on Kelly, who's undisputable the best AI winner product to date.

Sharon Wed, Nov 23, 2005 at 01:06 PM EST

Okay, I love Madonna and I just went and listened to Carrie Underwood's samples of her cd. Both women are great!!

Why all the arguing? Reminds me of the war between the Mariah and Madonna fans. They never stop!! I hope Carrie's fans won't get mixed up in this. Carrie Underwood will be fine so chill. Let Madonna do her thing.

Madonna would be laughing if she could read this. Girl knows how to stir the pot! Why do you think she's still being talked about 20 years later? Madonna's not dumb, she knows how to keep her name in the headlines. I think Madonna is probably the most famous person in the world!

r_quale@yahoo.com Wed, Nov 23, 2005 at 01:06 PM EST

*Sigh*... I remember back in the day when an artist (like, say, Madonna, for instance), had to literally WORK HER FINGERS AND HER ARTISTIC INTEGRITY TO THE BONE by moving to New York City with a pocket full of change and a dream... hit the pavement daily... go without food to pay for demos... sleep on the floor of friends' apartments only to wake up the next day and try, try, try to get someone to listen to your music... AND THEN you'd become the Worlds Greatest Female Pop Star of All Time... Madonna = Talent. Carrie Underwood = television ratings. Hate to tell ya...

Jai Wed, Nov 23, 2005 at 12:59 PM EST

Whoa whoa whoa. I feel like I've stepped back to the 90's. Are we on Jenny Jones? What's with all the hatin'? I think everyone needs to step back and stop with the psycho soccer mom/hockey dad motif. It's just the #1 CD. Both artists did great. I can't see Carrie Underwood being anything but excited that she sold almost a third of a million units. She's done great. And Madonna is a mother of two, so it's really classy that people are trashing her and calling her a slut. In addition, as if sexual proclivity has anything to do with artistic merit. Is it to say that because one enjoys sex, one cannot be an artist? That's a pretty high horse to be on. And what's with the age fetish? When I'm in my late 40's, I'd love to be in the shape Madonna is in. Sounds like some people are pretty insecure about their own ages to be knocking her for it. It sounds like a lot of snobbery to me for people to knock Madonna for having a long career. The whole "I liked her in the 80's and now she's over" just reeks of pompousness. I can't imagine how you'll feel when you're at work and people sit there calling you "over" for being old and hoping to replace you with a 20-something, or maybe I've just hit the nail on the head? Since Madonna is evolving with her music, some people's tastes have moved on differently. Why should her choice of moving into electronica strike such a strong chord?

Why can't everyone just respect each other's musical tastes? It's this type of closed-mindedness that condones conformism. "Gee, look at how many people listen to such crap. How can they be such sheep? Instead, everyone should be listening to what I like, because it's better and oh-so-cool. Yeah, then they'd totally stick it to the man and not be sheep." Duh.

ProBuck Wed, Nov 23, 2005 at 12:20 PM EST

I don't know anything about Carrie Underwood except she obviously has a built in audience from AI. I'm not hating but it's pop music folks. Pop music!!! The whole sex sells copout is ridiculous. You might not like it but Madonna is an artist. If Carrie Underwood is as talented as her supporters say, maybe in 20 years you can get all upset, spew bile and worry that she'll open at number one against Preston Federline's debut.

Josh Wed, Nov 23, 2005 at 12:03 PM EST

This is a funny article. Trashing Carrie for Bo. Lmao, listen to Bo's new songs. Pure pop trash. Too bad coming in second gave him less creative control than Carrie. The Bo from Idol has sold his soul. The hypocrite is making pop junk.

I'm buying Madonna's and Carrie's CD but NOT Bo's. He's not a rocker, he's a popper!! Hypocrite and liar, he sold his soul to the devil and then told his fans he would never do pop music. Liar!! I hate you Bo, I voted for you but you are a liar!! The new songs sounds like a very very bad Matchbox 20 impersonation!! They suck!

Larry Wed, Nov 23, 2005 at 11:58 AM EST

Madonna is a sex artist who knows how to sell herself. WTG Material Girl, you did it again. I hope your kids grow up better than you. But you're hot and I like trashy slutty women, so it's all good Madonna!

Tracy Wed, Nov 23, 2005 at 11:56 AM EST

Yo, peeps. Any fans see the G-A-Y club performance of Madonna's in England?? Lmao, she was nastier than ever.. Being older doensn't mean she got wiser or classier that's for sure. Sicko.

Michelle Wed, Nov 23, 2005 at 11:54 AM EST

Haha, that's funny of course the "crotch-grabbing slut" will outsell the pure country singer. DUH!!! Smut sells!!

Lisa Wed, Nov 23, 2005 at 11:52 AM EST

Well, I'm surprised Carrie came as close as she did to Madonna. I mean after all Madonna's new video is burning up MTV and country doesn't sell as well as pop so I'm surprised Madonna didn't sell more.

I don't think Madonna's album is as good as her older stuff but I know her fans like it so they can dance to it. My sister bought all 4 versions of Madonna's CD on I-tunes.

Mario Wed, Nov 23, 2005 at 11:51 AM EST

Bite me, You should really spell check your entries.. it shows your lack of intelligence.

Second, people may speak using "like" interjected after every two words but when you type "like" in your sentences, then that is something to worry about.

You made the following statement in your entry:
"I'm not saying that people haven't said anything bad about Madonna, but it's really low to have a prejudice for people just beacause they come from the south or mid-west!"

but you know, you started your entire entry with an insult of your own:
"Why the heck would you want to buy a Cd from a like 45-year-old slut?!?!"

You can't have it both ways, if you want people to respect you or people from the mid-west then you need to start showing a little respect to others. This is exactly why people make fun of mid-westerners and anyone who thinks of themselves "holier than thou"; because you make it so easy with your hypocrisy and ignorance, you give us perfect amunition with which to debunk your theories, morality (lets not talk about philadering religious men, closet cases, etc.) and everything else.

needless to say, Madonna -- the 47 year old, crotch grabbing "slut" as you so gracefully called her without knowing ANYTHING about her or knowing her personally, beat out your precious, perfect, pure and demure Carrie.. and at the end of the day, only you and yours have embraced her where the rest of the world moves on to bigger and better things, even if they happen to be 47 year old crotch grabbing sluts.

Jen Wed, Nov 23, 2005 at 11:45 AM EST

Wow, Madonna fans are attacking Carrie on this site too? I never saw them as nervous as they were this week. Even the last minute mass emails from the record company begging fans to buy more copies to make Madonna number one and now they are on yet another site trashing Carrie. Anyone who actually listens to both CD's, can see quite easily Madonna's the dancer and Carrie's the singer. Carrie's the role model and Madonna is the buisness woman who knows sex sells and how to sell her self.

Congratulations Madonna and fans, Madonna's legacy of trashy video and disgusting performances continue. What an icon. Too bad she didn't go the high road instead of always choosing the quick buck.

I was a fan of Madonna's years ago but I feel bad if she gaining a new generation of fans. More trash to spread around the world, just what the world needs. Way to go Madonna. Leading the world with nothing, but ways to sell sex and make money. Congrats!!

Liza Wed, Nov 23, 2005 at 11:38 AM EST

Carrie who?

Rick Wed, Nov 23, 2005 at 11:38 AM EST

Hey no need for hating peps! To be honest, until a few weeks ago, i had no idea who Carrie Underwood was considering i don't watch American Idol. For a debut, her numbers are quite impressive. But just because your a fan of hers theres no need to trash Madonna.Everyone has different tastes. They're musical styles are quite different and Madonna has been around since the 80s for a reason:good music.Don't BS with the argument of she's all marketing, because if you've ever taken a business course you'd know in order to be a sucessful marketer you gotta have a good product. Even if Carrie would have topped this weeks Billboard, face it, if you know anything about pop culture, Madonna's name is going to remembered 100 years from now. American Idol's, not so sure.

jason Wed, Nov 23, 2005 at 11:35 AM EST

these comments are disturbing. the names and language people are using is horrible. we're talking about who will have a #1 record, not asking for people to pass judgement. first of all, women over 50 can be just as sexty as those under 50, the way we treat older women in this society makes me sick to my stomach. plus, madonna never said she had a good voice, she just wants to make music, and these things being said make my stomach turn. on the other hand, carrie does not need to be called a "whore"!?!? yes, there is freedom of speech and you have been asked for your opinion, but there is no need for hatred and judgement, these may be entertainers we're talking about, but they're also human beings. think before you speak.

soccermom Wed, Nov 23, 2005 at 10:54 AM EST

What's wrong with being a soccer mom and selling a million records? Madonna does both. Anyways, They are both very talented. Madonna always comes out with great music and I am sure Carrie's CD is good too. I have heard her sing and I will be buying both CD'S and buying extra's for Christmas gifts!
Don't waste any energy being insulting about either artist, They both have talent. I know I can't carry a tune for the life of me-that requires skill and dedication. Feliz Navidad Y Feliz AÑO NUEVO!

Brittany Wed, Nov 23, 2005 at 10:41 AM EST

Dude Madonna has no talent..she cant sing a god damn note, if u want some real talent its carrie underwood. Madonna thinks shesn hot and shes what like almost 50 now? pretty sick, she think shes still got it but shes going downhill..carrie is amazing..u carrie bashers are just too much lmao

justmatt Wed, Nov 23, 2005 at 10:15 AM EST

bite me, are you on drugs?

Lissa Wed, Nov 23, 2005 at 09:23 AM EST

Go Madonna! Carrie is a dumb blunde with no spunk. Save te deer in a headlights stare for a nursing hom performance you whore.GO MADONNA!

Michael Wed, Nov 23, 2005 at 09:21 AM EST

She is going to be #1. I just read it, its official. Why would anyone doubt her? She rules.

Bite Me Wed, Nov 23, 2005 at 09:12 AM EST

Why the heck would you want to buy a Cd from a like 45-year-old slut?!?! Madonna WILL probably out sell Carrie, but, atleast Carrie doesn't sound like a computer with a virus!! LMAO!! I crack myself up...

But, Madonna does have some good songs. Carrie has only been "famous" for like, 7 months and look how well she's doing!! I want to see one of y'all to go up and sing in front of hunderds of thousands of people! I want to know how you would feel if someone said that you were so stupid that you should TRY to walk in a straight line and that an ambulance would be waiting for you!! People have said that about Carrie!! I'm not saying that people haven't said anything bad about Madonna, but it's really low to have a prejudice for people just beacause they come from the south or mid-west!

Now, hmmm... Carrie has been #1 on multiple charts for many different genres. Madonna has only been on the like, the "alternative" chart!

Atleast us carebears are not obbsessed with lets-cut-off-my-circulation pants! And we don't wear black leather corsets with our chests hang over!!

If you have a strong opinion against mine, than BITE ME!!

Mario Wed, Nov 23, 2005 at 09:11 AM EST

LOL -

The haters kill me.. I love it when things blow up in their face. I guess JESUS wasn't interested in taking the wheel this time, probably grooving to Confessions on a Dancefloor; after all, he does like confessions doesn't he? :)

Come on, Confess... Madonna still kicks butt!

fredric Wed, Nov 23, 2005 at 09:08 AM EST

Nice to see that Madonna and her cameltoe still have some power. Now if we can get her to have more #1 singles to oust Mariah off that throne...

eddie Wed, Nov 23, 2005 at 09:02 AM EST

Carrie is boring as hell...I saw her on tour this summer...thats when I took a bathroom break. Madonna put her in her place. I'll bet 10 years from now Carrie will be a soccer mom driving an SUV, and Madonna will still be producing hits.

NCaine Wed, Nov 23, 2005 at 07:48 AM EST

I'm so sick of Madonna...she is what, 46 years old and humping the stage everywhere she goes in nasty crotch-hugging spandex outfits! I don't want to see that! No one in their right mind should want to see that, or her gross camel toe all the time. STOP! Put some clothes on and make actual music...you know, songs that have lyrics and a chorus, instead of crappy techno songs where you sound like a computer that get old after you listen to them for 2 weeks. Yeah Hung Up was fun, but now that I've gotten over it and listened to the rest of the Cd, I'm bored. I won't buy it...I did however buy Carrie's Cd and its the best post-idol debut Cd that's been made. Carrie will be a huge hit because the country world already is in love with her and she has crossover appeal too. And to everyone that is deluding themselves and thinking that Bo Bice should have won, or that he will do better than Carrie, i doubt 300,000+ people are going to rush out and buy his Cd...i sure wont.

greg Wed, Nov 23, 2005 at 07:31 AM EST

Carrie who? will be the question this time next year! Whereas Madonna the icon will be celebrating another number 1 album in another 10 years! Artists come and go, but Madonna stays! Always will!!! Deal with it haters :-)

India Wed, Nov 23, 2005 at 07:18 AM EST

Oh boo hoo! Carrie doesn't have a video out yet! You know why? Becuase her handlers probably cant figure out what to do with her, since all she knows how to do is rock back and forth and stare at the lens with her deer-headlights blankness.

kay Wed, Nov 23, 2005 at 06:51 AM EST

madonna's good but heck CARRIES BETTER!!! I wish Carrie would have more publicity before though...cause if she did she would have kicked madonna's butt!!! it wouldnt have been close...shes just been getting to all her publicity the comming week and more too come...

Carlie Wed, Nov 23, 2005 at 04:37 AM EST

"Madonna is one of the great artist of our time."

Hahahaha good one! People, this is Carrie's first cd, and might I add that her video isn't even out yet which would help a lot. It also seems to me that none of you know anything about country music. Figures.

John Wed, Nov 23, 2005 at 03:52 AM EST

Carrie is a whiny, picthy, boring singer.

Ro Wed, Nov 23, 2005 at 02:52 AM EST

Carrie is a million miles better than Madonna.

Madonna is a joke, with little to no talen, I might add.
NO idea how/why she is so big. But that's another story.

Madonna isn't even comparable to the awesomeness that is Carrie.
How can you even compare their voices?
Madonna doesn't even come close, vocally.

It's shame that Madonna beat Carrie.
But in a world where crap singers like Hilary Duff and Lindsay Lohan are chart toppers, what do you expect?

O_ssie Wed, Nov 23, 2005 at 02:45 AM EST

Carrie deserved #1. Its a shame that she wasnt handeld as well as Madonna\

I mean Maddona's song was the intro theme to CSI:Miami and CSI:New york like 2weeks ago.. and had a music video come out like 2-3 weeks before the debut

CArrie still doesnt have a video released to the public..

Carie deserves better :(

Jai Wed, Nov 23, 2005 at 12:03 AM EST

Also, it's Carrie's first CD. First CDs are always big because there is novelty involved; she was also an AI winner, not that it guarantees success, but it's one of the two extremes. Ashanti came out with half a million on her first CD and dipped with her second and flopped with her third. Ashlee is facing a similar scenario. This is Madonna's 14th CD. Not only can she release new material and fare well, she can still take on newcomers too.

Carrie's CD had to come out this week to take advantage of the CMAs. She couldn't have come out last week or she would have been trampled by Kenny "is-he-or-isn't-he" Chesney. We'll see if her CD has the same longevity as Kelly.

claudenorth Tue, Nov 22, 2005 at 11:43 PM EST

I had no idea that Carrie Underwood's cd came out the same day as Madonna's...

jason Tue, Nov 22, 2005 at 08:31 PM EST

nov 15th was a great day for me with madonna, carrie, mariah and alanis morissette's greatest hits coming out. i bought all 4, i'm just glad chicks rule this week. there's room for everyone in my CD collection, but like when mariah entered at # 1 with "emancipation", i'm glad to see madonna at #1 because both women were counted out after their last cd's but this year they both kicked a$$!!! chicks rule

Carlos A. Tue, Nov 22, 2005 at 08:11 PM EST

Of course that Carrie sold a lot, i mean, if from the AI factory and it has to sell a lot by default and please, u are not gonna tell me that with that name of a single she wasn't going for the middle America folks. That was just tooooooo easy.

Anyway, Madonna is on top, yay, lol

Christina Tue, Nov 22, 2005 at 07:45 PM EST

Well Madonna should of won the battle considering she's an icon. It would of been embarrasing if she didn't. Carrie had the biggest debut by a new country artist though and is the darling of the country music scene so I don't thin she will be heading back to the farm in Oklahoma anytime soon. As for Bo Bice being the rightful winner. Wait til you hear his new material. Everything you knew from Bo on AI is gone and his material is pure crap. It sounds like Clive Davis tied him to a chair and forced him to sing this stuff.

Scott Tue, Nov 22, 2005 at 07:32 PM EST

You have to give Carrie credit if she is that close at number 2. Not to say that she doesn't pale in comparison to the mighty Madonna (whose CD I bought day one), but, I think Carrie's sales can be commended. I agree with the post that said next week will be the true test though. I imagine Carrie falling quicker than Madonna, who I hope will stay at number one.
