The five best new TV shows

Oct 12, 2005, 05:15 PM | by Gary Susman

Categories: Television

145817__pb_lHave you tied your TiVo in knots trying to keep up with all the new series launched over the last month? Doesn't it seem like this year's crop has yielded more good shows than usual? If you're having trouble keeping up with (or getting into) the season's best new programs, check out the primer on the five best new shows so far (including character guides and plot synopses) in the upcoming issue of Entertainment Weekly.

As you might have guessed, Everybody Hates Chris, My Name Is Earl, and Prison Break (starring Wentworth Miller, left) made the list. Also included are two less buzzed about shows: Supernatural (''Not since The X-Files has a show reveled so successfully in giving us goose bumps,'' writes EW's Tim Stack) and How I Met Your Mother (EW's Whitney Pastorek appreciates that the show has ''twiddled merrily -- but not overbearingly -- with traditional sitcom structure'' and gives the show ''mad super bonus points'' for casting Neil Patrick Harris and letting him cut loose).

Agree? Disagree? Which new shows would make your top five list?

Uhn... There are a lot of good series. I like The Closer ("Em Nome da Justiça", in Brazil), Cold Case ("Arquivo Morto" in Brazil), Without A Trace ("Desaparecidos" in Brazil) and Supernatural ("Sobrenatural" in Brazil). What a pity "Xena: The Princess Warrior" (another favorite TV series) had tragically finished. I hope Supernatural does not end in tragedy as Xena did.

Kaitie Thu, Mar 23, 2006 at 09:47 PM EST

Prison Break and Supernatural are two of the best shows I've seen in a long time.

Supernatural creeps me out just as much as any big budget horror flick would.
Prison Break has a twisted and intreging story line and new twists and turn in every episode.

And as an added bonus, both shows are lead by two Beautiful men.

Jamie Thu, Mar 2, 2006 at 05:32 AM EST

Supernatural is the best show ever Jared Padalecki is so SEXY!!! I love him so much. The OC is also the best Benjamin McKenzie is so hot!!!!

Osman Mon, Oct 31, 2005 at 08:26 PM EST

Top 5 New Shows
----
1. Prison Break - Really Interesting Idea, but not enough ppl watching

2. Commander in Chief - Was skeptical at first but now i think it has promise

3. Out of Practice - I think this show is the funniest of the new shows.. I watched the first two episodes of EHC and MNIE but I never got into it

4. Supernatural - just started watching this show like 3 days ago.. I never like shows like this but it creeps me out.. I love it!!! Invasion and Surface i never watched to i dont know.. dont really have time for it

5. Nothing really left so i pick: How I met your mother... I really liked this show at first but its kind of getting really really boring... so it makes my top 5 but if there was something else... it would be here.. you know what.. actually its a tossup between this show and Reunion.. I thought i liked that show as well but ... i dont know anymore

Top 5 Returning Shows
----
1. Lost.. I dont care what anybody says.. this show is THE BEST... i cant live without a weekly dose to LOST.. I think its the best show on television

2. CSI-CSI Miami- CSI NY... 3 very good shows.. new york has surprised me this season.. its getting good ratings and the stories are very interesting.. but i hate the fact that they changed the girl... Miami is second best for me now ... and CSI:LV im kind of dissapointed... i dont really enjoy this cast anymore and i dont know why.when im watching it i feel like if it was the new york cast, it went from the best csi show,to the worst, but still good.

3. Greys Anotomy: I love this show.. i didnt really like t he first episode.. i kindof had to force myself ..but know I cant live without it.... Very funny, best cast... i wouldnt change a thing.

4. Family guy - oh man.. this show cracks me up... this show needs to win a gazillion awards man...

5. there are too many shows.. i cnt really decide... So here is a list that ties for 5th place lol

24- Very very well done... top of my 5th place list
DH - tis good but.. its getting slower... not really enjoying it

Without a trace.. Now i know alot of ppl dont like this show because the think the only reason people watch it is because it comes after CSI. But i have to like this show becasue if it wasnt for this show.. i wouldnt have gotten into all the crime shows on CBS...

Numbers- love it... but kindof unrealistic
Entourage- go auqa man.. i like it
LAs Vegas - very very cool
W&G - funnyiest show on television (well, there is FG)
House - i like the idea.. but i odnt like some cases
Cold Case- I guess

Shows that i wacthed last season... but isnt so hot anymore
---
1. Medium - no time for it + boring now
2. OC- one of my favorite shows, its just repeating it self.. over and over and over again.
3. Arrested Devolpment- i like it but its kinda repeating itself.. very funny tho. i dont mind it
4. 2.5 men- i watch it .. very funny but after ELR...its lost most of its rating and so i feel like i liked it becasue i was in such a good mood after ELR finished.. not its still funny but its same old same old

top 5 shows that i wish was still on the air
--
1. Eyes- this is a no brainer.. very well made show its was just in the wrong time slot and abc prematurely cut it. I loved this sohw som much.. if they had moved Greys anotomy and givin Eyes that timeslot for a week or two... OR switch it with allias... or switch lost with allias... it would have lifted off and become a top 10 show... very bad move on ABC
2.Fastlane - i loved this show
3. Oz really good
4. ELR - i know it was getting repetitive...but my mondays are not the same without it
5. i would same family guy but its back on YAY

best drama- LOST
Best Comedy - Will and Grace
Best animation - Family Guy
Best Cast - Greys Anotomy
Best Crime show - CSI NY
Best Reality - Amazing Race
Best Alien Show - Supernatural
Worst Show - there is alot... killer instinct i guess
Best Cable show - Pinked/ Entourage
---

Best overall

LOOOOOOOOOOOOOSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSTTTTTTTTTTTTTT
without a doubt

Next fall season: Rusell Peters is coming oout with his own sitcom.... Hope CBS picks it up and puts it in mondays at 9..it will be the best new comedy of that season..

Rusell Peters is halarious

Joni Ruttenbur Mon, Oct 31, 2005 at 01:18 PM EST

"How I Met Your Mother" is SOOOO overrrated. And there's only one problem with casting Doogie Howser as Barney. Neil Patrick Harris is so GAY that it strains all credibility for him to be this lady killer. He looks and acts gay throughout the show. Put him in a gay bar and just maybe I would buy his character.

mel Sat, Oct 22, 2005 at 07:15 PM EST

Prison break is by far the best show that i have seen in awhile. I didnt expect a lot from it when i saw the previews but when i watched it i loved it! Grey's anatomy is another show that is so good! the second season is even better then the first season.
The best shows this season are (in no particular order)
1.)prison break
2.)Greys Anatomy
3.)Over There
4.)The O.C

Head Cases - thought it had promise (oh well)

Catherine Fri, Oct 21, 2005 at 06:55 PM EST

Personally, I think prison break is the best show in a long time

top four:
1.Prison Break
2.Bones
3.My Name is Earl
4.Everybody Hates Chris

My favorite returning show would have to be House. The Oc has completely lost it's touch. It keeps repeating itself.
Although Prison Break is my favortie at the moment, I find it hard to imagine that they could keep it interesting once they are outside the walls of the prison. I don't see this show having a long future.

P.S. Wentworth Miller is gorgeous.

nikki Fri, Oct 21, 2005 at 12:00 AM EST

Prison Break
Over There
The Office
Rome
Desperate Housewives

martin Tue, Oct 18, 2005 at 09:28 AM EST

Seems like there's a lot of 'alien shows' this year, I had a hard time to seperate Invasion and Surface at the beginning. But they're both quite good.

This years best show is without a doubt Prison break. One of the best shows i've ever seen, a bit to soon to say it but i actually think this is better than 24.

Jim Tue, Oct 18, 2005 at 03:48 AM EST

Excellent shows this year. As usual The West Wing, Smallville, Desperate Housewives are good. CSI:NY continues in good form.

Grey Anatomy is getting better and new shows Prison break and My Name is Earl are excellent.

Falling are The O.C (how much more of the same angst can we take), Lost (nothing is ever answered), Numb3rs (i dire need of something new) and Medium (not going anywhere).

Was suprised to see Just Legal disappear so quickly, had promise.

kethira Mon, Oct 17, 2005 at 11:26 PM EST

Top 5:

Invasion
My Name is Earl
Criminal Minds
Supernatural
Everybody Hates Chris

I was done with Ghost Whisperer after 2 shows
I've already given up on Prison Break
I'm about ready to call it quits on Threshold

Still loving The Office
Still don't get Desperate Housewives
Boston Legal rocks, but for how much longer?
Lost may have lost its magic, but I'm giving it the benefit of the doubt

allen stone Sat, Oct 15, 2005 at 03:52 AM EST

Lots of great new fall shows! My Top 5!

5.ghost whisperer
4.my name is earl
3.bones
2.supernatural
1.prison break

My Top returning shows!
6.Veronica Mars
5.Smallville
4.Stargate SG1
3.Stargate Atlantis
2.Nip Tuck
1.Alias

Nettie Fri, Oct 14, 2005 at 11:08 AM EST

What's with all the comparisons of Prison Break to 24?

24's breakout first season is leaps and bounds over Prison Break in quality, plot, suspense and acting.

Prison Break is just ok, and Wentworth Miller is no Kiefer Sutherland.

annette Fri, Oct 14, 2005 at 11:01 AM EST

My Top Five:

1- Everybody Hates Chris
2- My Name is Earl
3 - Commander in Chief
4 - HIMYM (only because of N.P. Harris
5? - If I have to choose a fifth choice, (sigh..)I guess
Prison Break - although it's preposterous premise is wearing on me.

My Number 1 Worst new Show:

Invasion - I stopped watching with the 10/12 episode.
I gave it a chance, but it is just awful - see ya.

Nancy Thu, Oct 13, 2005 at 07:56 PM EST

My Name is Earl. That show better be in line for a slew of Emmy awards next September. The entire cast is fantastic and every episode makes me laugh until I fall off my sofa. I also love HIMYM and don't understand why everyone is suddenly ragging on it. Neil Patrick Harris has definitely left Doogie Howser in the dust, and any show with Alyson Hannigan in it is worth a watch. And can anyone tell me who plays the older brother on Out of Practice? I'm not totally crazy about the show, but I watch it to see him. What else has he been in?

Ron Mwangaguhunga Thu, Oct 13, 2005 at 07:20 PM EST

ROME!!! How could you forget?!

Brady Thu, Oct 13, 2005 at 05:45 PM EST

I've definitely gotten hooked on Prison Break. It's given 24 fans something intense to watch so we can have our fix until January.

The other new show I'm hooked on is Invasion. Very good show. Pretty spooky, and, while it doesn't advance the story real fast, it is kept entertaining by freaking you out with stuff. I'm guessing that we'll get our answers before Christmas break.

I haven't watched any other new shows, and I'm trying to not get hooked on any more.

Kristy Thu, Oct 13, 2005 at 03:22 PM EST

I really like My Name is Earl. It's probably the funniest show I've seen in a long time. I'm sure it will be cancelled soon (almost all the shows I like never make it through 2 seasons.) I like HIMYM too. Neil Patrick Harris is hilarious. My husband and I have incorporated the phrase, "It'll be LEGENDARY!" into our day-to-day speech. Alyson Hanigan is really funny too.

brandon Thu, Oct 13, 2005 at 03:21 PM EST

My name is earl
criminal minds
prison break

djm Thu, Oct 13, 2005 at 02:26 PM EST

My favorite new shows this season is Martha Stewart "Apprentice" (she is so much better than Donald) and My Name is Earl. "Earl" is actually my fav, but Martha runs a close 2nd.

Tim Thu, Oct 13, 2005 at 02:13 PM EST

I enjoy HIMYM. Doogie's comments make the show more than the standard sitcom. The trip to Philly episode is proof of that.

Prison Break is great. Glad Michael rescued the cute doc. ;)

Sheila Hannon Thu, Oct 13, 2005 at 02:09 PM EST

How I Met Your Mother is the best new show in a long time. it just flows - excellent writing ( love the shirt episode last week) and the guy who plays Ted is right on the money. We also love chris and Earl..... finally some tv worth watching. Please get rid of Pamela Anderson and Wil & Grace... it is enough already!!!

dma Thu, Oct 13, 2005 at 12:08 PM EST

What's so great about HIMYM? It's Wonder Years crossed with Friends. Been there, seen it a thousand times before. Love Extras and Kitchen Confidential. P.S. Did Popwatch have to torture me with a hot pic of the Prison Break dude?

Media Grrl Thu, Oct 13, 2005 at 12:06 PM EST

Agree with Prison Break (the 2-parter prison riot was the most riveting TV of the season so far) and My Name is Earl (can't remember the last time a comedy was so laugh-out-loud funny from start to finish).

Everybody Hates Chris and Supernatural both do their respective genres credit.

But EW can do better than How I Met Your Mother. This CBS sitcom plays like one of the string of twenty-something sitcoms that NBC tried out in the 8:30 p.m. slot after Friends. I'd rather watch the original in reruns.

Matt Thu, Oct 13, 2005 at 10:46 AM EST

How is How I Married Your Mother getting all these raves? It's about the most predictable sitcom I've ever seen -- and that's saying something. I literally watched about 15 minutes of the episode where the guy throws like a million parties to attract this one girl before I just couldn't take it anymore. I switched and watched a Friends rerun because if I'm just going to watch a predictable, boring Friends knockoff, why not just watch the superior original?

Josh Thu, Oct 13, 2005 at 10:31 AM EST

I love 'HIMYM'. It's lead is appealing, the engaged couple are endearingly cute (different actors could have easily made them annoying), NPH is amazing, and I enjoy this half hour only next to 'Arrested Development' in my weekly watching. Sure, I wonder how long kids could really sit there listening and think maybe just narration would work... but it's a great show nonetheless.

Melanie Thu, Oct 13, 2005 at 10:20 AM EST

I am going to go with Killer Instinct. I think it would have a better chance if it wasn't on Fridays.

SB Thu, Oct 13, 2005 at 09:33 AM EST

What's with all the HIMYM bashing? The show is fantastic, I think it's well on it's way to becoming the new Friends - just please ditch the opening/ending shots of the kids - we get the idea. NPH is oustanding and AH is a delight. I laughed so hard when Ted told a girl he was breaking up with her because it was ineffable, and she turned it back on him "I'm not f-able?". And PS, a friend recently played "Have you met Ted?" with me and it worked!

Laura B Thu, Oct 13, 2005 at 09:24 AM EST

I was looking forward to How I Met Your Mother, but it seems incredibly stupid. Jokes seem forced, characters' attempts at humor are sorrowly lacking, and everything is cheesy. Criminal Minds, however, is fantastic. I love watching that show!

Stef Thu, Oct 13, 2005 at 09:06 AM EST

"My Name is Earl" is so funny and cute, I just laugh and laugh through that and "The Office." "Supernatural" really scares me, but I get scared easily. I'm really happy to see Gilmore Girls cutie Jared Padalecki starring in his own successful show.

Josh Thu, Oct 13, 2005 at 08:57 AM EST

Didn't 'EW' say 'Invasion' was the best new drama in its fall preview? It must have been hard to choose between that, 'Supernatural,' and 'Threshold' -- all three have promise, and yet none has truly broken out as not being cliched.

I would have liked to have seen 'Kitchen Confidential' at least get an honorable mention and hopefully FOX will stick with it a bit longer.

lei Thu, Oct 13, 2005 at 08:29 AM EST

"Out of Practice" - is my favorite new show, who said the sitcom was dead?
For returning shows the only one that isn't showing signs of sophmore jinx is Veronica Mars, and I wasn't a fan last year became addicted over the summer so its new to me!

dh4645 Thu, Oct 13, 2005 at 08:03 AM EST

ROME!!! I forgot about ROME on HBO. So great. My favorite over the other previous 5 i have below.

dh4645 Thu, Oct 13, 2005 at 08:00 AM EST

my top 5 new shows are (not in any particular order:

-Surface
-Prison Break
-Earl
-Supernatural
-Threshold

my top 5 returning shows are:

-All 3 CSI's
-Nip/Tuck
-Alias
-The O.C.
-Numb3rs

Amelia Thu, Oct 13, 2005 at 07:48 AM EST

I LOVE Prison Break! The last two weeks were amazing, and I can't wait until the next episode. Hopefully they will continue to keep me on the edge of my seat with future episodes.
With that, the only other new show that I watch is "Everybody Hates Chris". Its very amusing!

Paul Thu, Oct 13, 2005 at 07:15 AM EST

My favorite 5 new shows are:

1. Threshold
2. Out of Practice
3. How I Met Your Mother
4. Prison Break
5. Bones

JasonHomey Thu, Oct 13, 2005 at 07:02 AM EST

I haven't watched a lot of new shows this year, but I enjoy How I Met Your Mother. Doogie does a great job and is very funny. I also have been sticking with Invasion for a little while longer. Their problem is their blessing. They have a great time slot, but then again, after you watch lost, you realize that invasion is no where near as good yet. You see how far they have to go.

Brian Thu, Oct 13, 2005 at 04:05 AM EST

1. Reunion - very interesting
2. Invasion
3. My Name is Earl
4. Surface
5. Commander in Chief

Laura Thu, Oct 13, 2005 at 01:26 AM EST

I don't have a top 5 favorite new shows, because there are only 2 new shows this season that I actually like:

1) My Name Is Earl - Hilarious!

2) Rome - Where's the love? This show has AWESOME acting, writing, characters, story, production values - just a wonderfully well done show.

As for the other shows on EW's list:
Haven't seen Supernatural.
Prison Break? Wentworth is hot, but the story is ridiculous and derivative.
Everybody Hates Chris - amusing at times, but I also find it to be so negative and depressing.
How I Met Your Mother? Give me a break! This show is so stale and unfunny, and pointless too - why would we root for him to get together with that one girl if we know she's not ultimately "the one"??

dave Thu, Oct 13, 2005 at 12:22 AM EST

do the end of summer shows count? because in that case, my top 5 would have to be:

my name is earl
kathy griffin: my life on the d-list
kitchen confidentail
extras
the comeback (r.i.p.)

thad Wed, Oct 12, 2005 at 11:04 PM EST

1. Surface: Wasn't expecting much, but great show so far with mystery of ocean and ET's. afraid of the government conspiracy plotline that seems to be upcoming though. stick with aliens and ocean.
2. Supernatural
3. Invasion: Good followup to Lost
4. Nightstalker: decent sub-storylines with a decent ongoing/overarching storyline.
5. Prisonbreak

supernatural rules! so glad for the shout out from EW. invasion & my name is earl are the other standouts for sure.

MsBHaven Wed, Oct 12, 2005 at 09:27 PM EST

'Supernatural' = 'Charmed' - skimpy outfits + 'Buffy' - witty dialogue + 1/2 'X-Files' + 1/2 'Poltergeist: The Legacy' - awesome creepiness + family dysfunction I'm really liking the show, though it might have something do with that pretty Impala.

What else... 'Prison Break,' 'My Name Is Earl,' 'Invasion,' & 'Surface.' Everything else is just... um not catching my eye. I'm sticking to my normal hash no matter how bad the show may have gotten. *cough*Alias*cough*Charmed*cough

definitely prison break and commander-in-chief (esp. the latter).

I've gotten into "Threshold", but I feel like the concept would play better as a miniseries or a show with a limited number of episodes, like "Rome".

Kitchen Confidential has potential, it just feels a little lukewarm. It would be better on HBO.

How about the 5 worst new shows? "Close to Home" and "Criminal Minds" have got to be in that Top 5

I haven't seen "Prison Break" at all. I saw one episode of "Supernatural", thought it was mediocre. "How I met Your Mother" has occasional great moments, but recent episodes haven't matched the wit of the pilot episode. I watched the first two episodes of "Everybody Hates Chris" and got bored with it. Which leaves....the great "My Name Is Earl"! Tuesday night is MUST-SEE-TV again on NBC, from 9-10 anyway, thanks to "Earl" and "The Office", which is practically new.

ok, totally out of the blue here, cause i couldn't figure out another place to ask this, but why isn't PinkIsTheNewBlog mentioned in your "Notable Blogs" section on the side bar? isn't it like, the blog-du-jour? i mean, besides PopWatch that is. p.s., i haven't been watching too many new shows this season, but in terms of concepts, My Name Is Earl trumps all.

My top 5 *new* shows (because I have a top 5 of returning shows, too!) are -- in no particular order:

- Threshold
- How I Met Your Mother
- My Name is Earl
- Supernatural
- Extras

Honorable mentions: Kitchen Confidential, Criminal Minds

Hmmm ... maybe I stay home too much ;-)

I watch all five shows.

Prison Break is the only show that can match the occassional intensity of "24".

Chris is funny. I love the dad.

How I Met Your Mother has Alyson Hannigan. Enough said.

My Name is Earl is the best of the comedies.

Supernatural is not nearly as good as these other four shows.

have found it so hard to watch all the new stuff and even harder to fit in some of the old stuff i watch. i am thinking of giving up on tv altogether.
prison break- entertaining but it makes me laugh unintentionally so i'm not the hugest fan(although wentworth is hot)
supernatural i found to be fun and scary and entertaining! everybody hates chris had a funny pilot and neil patrick harris makes How I Met Your Mother.
I find it sad to say that I have only been able to watch a couple of minutes of Earl, but last night's line about "that monkey in ET" cracked me up for hours.

Prison Break is a GREAT show. I didn't even have the desire to watch it until I was forced to by my boyfriend. Now we look forward to it every week. I also really like How I Met Your Mother. Neil Patrick Harris isn't all that funny but I suppose it's the writing for his character that's to blame. This past week's "Goonies" comments were enough to put it up there in the top 5 best new shows.

I tried watching Surface and Invasion and they are both ridiculous.

The first episode of "How I Met Your Mother" sucked bad. It had potential but, like a lot of pilots, it was trying too hard. But my husband I stuck with it, and it's starting to hit its stride. We even say, "Suit up!" to each other all the time. So it's in our top 5, as is "Prison Break." We'd also be watching "Supernatural" if we weren't so unnaturally devoted to "The Amazing Race," even in this season of family suckitude. But we did catch the first ep before AR premiered, and we commented on how good it was for 1) a pilot, and 2) a show on the WB.

I dunno about favourite... but that photo illustrates nicely the stupidity of Wentworth Miller's tattoo job. What's with the collar? It looks like he is wearing a T-shirt or it's some kiny-assed tan line... it's too late for the make-up department to change now, but let the tattoo's trail off people... he looks like he's been wearing his home-made tie-dye shirt out in the rain.

Dude, how does the bland azzed, rehashed old sticom "How I Met your Mother" make the top five list? Ya'll sent us free copies of the first episode and I STILL wanted my money back. Yo, don't believe the hype. And I am sorry but Neil Patrick Harris plays a carbon copy of Hank Azaria's role in Herman's Head. I know short term memory is common in pop culture, but come on...

It may not be as bad as I think it is, but it surely ain't that good. Even Kevin Sorbo's sitcom had more promise than "how I met your mom"
