'Dancing With the Stars' judge's naughty past

Jun 16, 2005, 03:05 PM | by Michael Slezak

Categories:

155247__dwts_lEver get the feeling you've seen Dancing With the Stars judge Carrie Ann Inaba before? Maybe it's because she played Fook Yu (scroll down) in Austin Powers in Goldmember. Now, I'm not exactly sure I'd agree with Inaba's assessment that the role was ''all in good taste,'' but considering she's worked behind the scenes as a choreographer for such reality shows as Who Wants to Marry a Multi-Millionaire?, Married by America, and The Swan, played ''Goddess Dancer'' in the big-screen bomb Showgirls, and worked the pole during Madonna's Girlie Show Tour, I guess everything's relative.

DWS is a great show. My husband and I love to watch the dancing, the costumes, and we chuckle over the jokes. Sure we don't always agree with the judges but that's always the case in competitions. Must admit we love Bruno, he is so expressive and most of the time he is right on. Len sometimes forgets that he is judging people who are just learning, even if it is with professional instructors. And we also like Carrie Ann now that she is not so serious. People out there relax, it is just entertainment.

Dave Mon, Nov 3, 2008 at 11:47 PM EST

dump Len and get positive judges

Jason Thu, Oct 30, 2008 at 09:06 PM EST

GET RID OF CARRIE ANN. SHE IS SO DUMB AND IGNORANT. WHAT A STUPID THING TO SAY TO CLORIS WHO IS 82. GET A LIFE CARRIER ANN - YOU DONT' KNOW HOW TO JUDGE OR DANCE.

Jananne Hayes Thu, Oct 30, 2008 at 08:57 PM EST

You need to go NOW. Your comments to Cloria were not only ignorant and unacceptable but discussing. Who do you think you are. You are not only a pomous, ignorant judge but dont you really don't know anything about professional dancing. Get a new job ans Life,

Dave Polsinelli Wed, Oct 29, 2008 at 07:29 PM EST

Cary Ann (sorry if mispelled) can no longer be considered a viable judge if she thinks that Toni Braxton was a "great dancer". At best Braxton was trying but only a fair dancer and virtually all of our household and friends were happy to see her go. She was in no way winning caliber. While I agree that Cloris needed to go, it was absurd of Cari Ann to say that Braxton was in any way a viable candidate. She need a judgement adjustment to understand what talent and entertainment are all about.

Karen Dooley Wed, Oct 29, 2008 at 12:40 PM EST

The 3 judges should be replaced with new blood. Len talks about the way that the dancers does the dances get with Len this is 2008 NOT 1940's and as far as Carrie Ann she should be fired for her comments on 10.27.08 the viewers get to vote not just the judges what is wrong with her arms they are always flying and Bruno needs to speak slower so we can understand him. Again, ABC needs to get judges like Michael very well spoken with his comments good or bad. I hate watching this show live now I DVR and its great because I can FAST FORWARD through the judges editorial.

Deborah Tue, Oct 28, 2008 at 07:14 PM EST

Carrie-Ann was definitely out of line in her remarks to Cloris. Rude and ignorant comes to mind. It isn't Cloris's fault that the viewers preferred her to Toni Braxton. The judges probably thought that Cloris would be voted off after the first or second week and now that she hasn't been, it's getting nasty. Maybe people admire and respect the fact that at 82, Cloris is doing a show like this one. At 82, a lot of people can't find their way to the bathroom, much less remember the steps to a dance routine! If the judges don't want to take the chance that the viewers will want to keep someone they consider not up to par, they should not allow anyone who is older, and who can't put their leg above their head on the show! Carrie-Ann is a rude and nasty woman and she definitely owes Cloris an apology. The guest judge last night was the only decent, respectful judge on the panel. Personally, I wish the viewers could also vote for new judges!!!

Julie Tue, Oct 28, 2008 at 01:47 PM EST

Carrie Ann Inaba, you owe Cloris an apology for your comment about Tony Braxton being let go last week. You forget Cloris was invited to the show. Its not Cloris fault she has more audience and more friends that are voting for her. For being 82 years old she is doing a great job.
Carrie Ann I would like to see you dancing at that age. The show invites a 82 year old to dance with 19 or older people, what do you expect? If you want her to compete at her age group, then you should have a show dancing with the stars all older people.

Laura Mon, Oct 27, 2008 at 09:26 PM EST

...dance. She can't move for nothing. I agree, I was pissed last week when the sent home Toni Braxton and kept her. She had fun and entertained us all, but she needs to go. This is first a dance competition and people and forgetting that.

Laura Mon, Oct 27, 2008 at 09:23 PM EST

I don't usually agree with what Carrie Ann has to say about the dancers but tonight I did. Cloris is in here 80's and it is a great thing that she is so active but lets be honest people she CAN'T

Keo Mon, Oct 6, 2008 at 10:46 PM EST

To the Judges:
You all are being very unfair to Cloris -- she made a strong, valiant effort to be serious & give the Paso Doble the Dignity, Aggression & Seriousness that it demands ... AND that you all have emphasized! As the website says, "Paso Doble: The paso doble on the competition floor should create a Spanish bull fighting atmosphere..."
Then you count her out for not being witty (esp. Carrie Ann!). Nothing funny in a bull fight! Now she comes back & overdoes the wacky aspect a bit & you count her out for that! No wonder she is confused -- you've given direction to the other contestants (better & better each season), but you've fallen flat on your collective faces -- shame on you!
You ALL owe her an apology!

It also seems that Toni's scores are a bit higher than her dancing would otherwise bring -- others who have danced similarly have received lower scores than you have been giving Toni. What's up?

dani22 Tue, Sep 23, 2008 at 10:23 AM EST

Carrie Ann is da bomb. She always gives good advice to the dancers and she seems to know what she's tlaking about. Season 7 will be the best season yet!

Carrie Ann is HOT HOT HOT! I also feel that she always gives the most valuable advice to the contestants.
Season 7 is off to an awesome start I cant wait to see this competition really heat up!

Brenda Riggs Mon, May 5, 2008 at 09:04 PM EST

1)I'd LOVE to see the judges and Tom Bergeron dance. 2) We, the audience, see every possible angle of a dance while you get a pretty much 2-dimensional version. You miss a lot, and it shows in your critiques. Also, please remember your stars are INVITED on the show to have fun and compete, not to be unnecessarily ripped to shreds. There are nice ways to judge.

OMG… Did you hear???

I’m so excited, DREW LACHEY, former “Dancing With The Stars” champ will be performing THRILLER with the SoBe Life Water Lizards. It is tomorrow in Time Square at 9am. How cool is that? I think it is at Military Island! Tell everybody you know!

I must say that I've watched a few episodes and I didn't find myself absolutely needing to tune in. Probably because I am not interested in ballroom dancing. I think "So You Think You Can Dance", and MTV's up and comming "Rapping With The Stars" will be more appealing to me.

From http://thecolumnists.com/fox/fox49.html

Girlie man? No. Girlie fan.

Ask most guys why they’re dazzled by “Dancing With the Stars,” and they won’t sidestep the truth. It’s the chicks.

Especially Laila Ali. She’s a knockout figuratively. Good for her daddy for producing something glitzier than a heavyweight title belt.

Then there’s that dancing titlist, Cheryl Burke. She rode Drew Lachey to the top two seasons ago. Then rushed Emmitt Smith to the trophy last fall. Now she’s trying to win with “90210” actor Ian Ziering. If the judges are staring at her backless outfits, she’ll wear a threepeat.

As for the sexiest of them all, Julianne Hough, I save her for the last of my musings:

Week 1: Some wag wrote that model Paulina Porizkova was safe from the voters’ ax. Wake up. The tall Czech was too short on name recognition. Even more than 2004 Miss USA Shandi Finnessey. Which meant no fan constituency to offset any rips from the judges.

Sure, the Clyde The Glide can't hide his dulln

Bucky Fox Tue, Apr 10, 2007 at 04:04 PM EST

Goodbye, Gibbons.

It’s the strongest lock since I picked Florida to buck Ohio State in the college football title game.

OK, so I picked Ohio State to return the favor in the recent hoops final. But who’s counting?

On the floor that counts right now — “Dancing With the Stars” — Leeza Gibbons won’t stand for long. Like tonight. She’ll glide right past Clyde Drexler and fade stage left.

Not that it matters much. Drexler is a slam-dunk goner next week. McCartney will beat it soon thereafter. The Cheers guy is facing a last call. Billy Ray won’t be aching in practice much longer.

Start counting down to the Fat One vs. Ohno.

Joey is this season’s Mario Lopez, a ringer stepping all over the competition. The big guy truly hammered it out last night, doing footwork only a pro can nail.

As for Apolo, he has two big factors that will shoot him to the final: a gold-medal ethic and a partner who is a drop-dead superstar waiting to happen. That would be Julianne Hough, the hottest teen to hit

Scott Thu, Mar 22, 2007 at 08:28 PM EST

I'm afraid that even from the first episode this season it doesn't look like a great cast. The "stars" are so less than stars that they make the Surreal Life casts look like superstars! (And that's tough to do)

I DON'T KNOW WHAT THE DEAL IS WITH THE JUDGING PROCESS ON THIS SHOW BUT IT DOES NOT SEEM LIKE ACTUAL GOOD DANCERS ARE GIVEN THE CREDIT DUE THEM. I'D LIKE TO SEE A WHOLE LESS JUDGING OF PERSONALITY AND A WHOLE LOT MORE JUDGING OF DANCING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lewis Walsh Wed, Nov 1, 2006 at 09:35 AM EST

Dancing With the Stars: Great costumes, wonderful professional dancers, terrible match of music to dances. The musical director should be fired immediately.

DaveK Mon, Feb 27, 2006 at 10:47 PM EST

The real problem is allowing the audience to vote. It's not about dancing. Stacy and Drew were good. Jerry was not that good but lasted because he is likeable. Lisa could dance but she was not as good as these two. The guy bounced the frist week and P were the worst.

dave Sun, Feb 26, 2006 at 11:31 PM EST

Even though many will feel sorry for Stacy losing,
somehow it seems to fit. DWTS has simply embraced
the WWE format. The entire program is a put on. At its very core is the soul of liberal belief: OJ was
innocent, midnight basketball keeps them out of jail
and ebonics is good for self esteem. Can I have your
vote now?

Pat Sun, Feb 26, 2006 at 10:25 PM EST

Should have been two winners tonite! And not Jerry. Stacy and Drew both deserve to win tonite. Unbelievable!!
Pat

Linda Sun, Feb 26, 2006 at 09:39 PM EST

Jerry's still on and Stacy is out. I could care less who wins. Jerry is a nice guy but never should have made it to the final three. This was my last Dancing with the Stars.

Fet Up Sun, Feb 26, 2006 at 09:18 PM EST

I have to say half way into the show. That I can't believe that Jerry is still in it and Stacey is out. This goes to show you that the viewers out there are purely stupid. To back the worst dancer since the show aired (Jerry). If Drew doesn't win tonight against Jerry, this household will never watch Dancing With the Stars again.

Swing dancer Fri, Feb 24, 2006 at 11:06 AM EST

For weeks we had this big build-up on Stacy and she was not pushing the limits in her dancing. And then you come to the freestyle and the women with all the makings of putting a great routine together falls flat. I don't blame Stacy for the routine I blame Tony for putting that crap together. I would like to see Stacy and Tony do a freestyle route to "Foot Loose".
What the hell was the show producters going don't they review the route before the show. They had a chance to real have great Sunday and now hey will have a flop. If they don't watch out the will have a results of Jerry, Drew and Stacy. If Stacy would win I see her making $$$$$ but Drew he will go back to acting with his fame of being the ex-brother-inlaw to Jessica Simpson.

Maureen Fri, Feb 17, 2006 at 09:42 PM EST

LISA GOT ROBBED! That Jerry Rice may be nice, but not at all top material. Lisa was wonderful and I cried when she lost...it was totally not fair! What's with the public voting for him! You know he is not a good dancer for that caliber of competition. Really, let the best person win..and not by favoritism!

Susandy Tue, Feb 7, 2006 at 07:37 PM EST

Hey, this show keeps me awake! I love it! Now that P's out I can watch without wanting to swear at the TV. What were they thinking! His big clunky clown feet would have broken Ashley's foot had he missed his step! Anywho, George has got me in stitches every show but he is no Jonathan. It's nice to see Tia losing so much weight and it is inspiring me but my favorite is Stacey. Show off. And I've heard Drew will be doing the next new reality show called "The Newdaddy" not to be confused with "The Newlyweds". HA HA. Ahhhhhh. Keep em coming reality TV. We could blog all night....

Jane Kima Mon, Feb 6, 2006 at 02:18 PM EST

Wow... no wonder she's so comfortable in those extremely low cut dresses. I'm a little disturbed, to be honest, why she wears them every week. A little too risque for a judge when the other two are wearing tuxedos.

MO Sun, Jan 22, 2006 at 06:09 PM EST

Extremely interesting to read last year's comments/criticisms about the outcome of DWTS....
Talk about a true shame is what is happening on the 2K6 show. A disasterous decision on ABC's part to include audience votes.Takes the professionalism completely out of it.
Maybe next year...

Steve Bailey Thu, Jul 7, 2005 at 04:17 AM EST

I quite agree with the poster who said that John O'Hurley was robbed. This guy has been a class act throughout, knocked himself out, and yet seemed to be thoroughly enjoying himself the whole time. Kelly Monaco shakes her hips and gets carted around by her partner, and she gets a perfect score?? Fred and Ginger are rolling in their graves tonight!

Kim Wed, Jul 6, 2005 at 11:14 PM EST

"Dancing with the Stars"

I have a real problem with the outcome of the "Dancing with the Stars" competition.

John O'Hurley and his partner Charlotte did an even better job with their quick-step, than they did the first time. They were rewarded with wonderful marks.

Kelly Monaco (and her partner Alec) didn't do quite as well with their repeat performance, as they did the first time. You'd never know it from the marks, however.

Then came the free dance. John and Charlotte were wonderful, and got good marks.

Kelly made several mistakes, that were visible to even non-pro dancers. Yet she and Alec were awarded the first perfect scores of the competition. Not from one judge, but from all three.

I guess I'm supposed to surmise from this that it was the best performance of the entire competition? Not even close.

But wait, here's a possible explanation: Kelly Monaco, DWTS new darling, just happens to be employed by ABC.

Conflict of interest, much? I mean a win by Monaco is nothing but good press for "General Hospital" (lagging in the ratings) and ABC, right? Not to mention that the "winners" will appear on "Good Morning America" tomorrow. Another ratings bonanza for ABC.

I have a suggestion for season 2 of this show:

a) either give the competitors the scores they truly deserve

or

b) as in most contests, perhaps employees of Disney, ABC and their subsidiaries should not be eligible. Just like for the rest of us.

O'Hurley? You got ROBBED.

Deanne Tue, Jul 5, 2005 at 03:11 PM EST

I am so happy DWTS is on television because now people can see real entertainment!

Can I just say that I was once in love with Joey McIntyre back in his New Kids on the Block days, but he has become so not attractive in his "old" age. It depresses me.

Shi Thu, Jun 16, 2005 at 09:27 PM EST

Carrie Ann was also a fly girl on "In Living Color"...that's where I (sadly) first recognized her from...this show is such the guilty pleasure for me!

Charity Thu, Jun 16, 2005 at 05:33 PM EST

If people want to watch ballroom dancing, watch "Strictly Ballroom" a briliant film that carries much more value than watching "celebrities" (who is the celebrity on the show?) try to dance (yes Kelly M. I mean you), and play to the camera that they are not liked by America (yes Rachel H. I mean you, my goodness you were a model, stop your whining, of course no one wants to see you win, you are a model), I will admit I watched for a few mintues last night, and am ashamed. I then but in the film and life felt so much more at peace and right. Who cares about the scandal of a judge? So American Idol.

David R. Thu, Jun 16, 2005 at 03:39 PM EST

This show is so lame -- and they're calling it summer's biggest hit. Why doesn't the public ever support GOOD shows, like "The Real Gilligan's Island"? (Kidding.)
