Get ready for 'The Smurfs: The Movie'!

84822__smurfette_lSo did you hear the one about the live-action Smurfs movie? No joke -- apparently, there are people in Hollywood willing to finance this absosmurfly terrific idea. (La la la-la la la, la la-la la la...)

I'm worried, however, that our little blue buddies will meet the same fate as The Grinch, Josie and the Pussycats, and other beloved animated pals who've seen their Q ratings plummet at the hands of A-list actors buried under 10 pounds of makeup. (No, mommy, the scary cat hurts my eyes!)

Sign the EW.com petition right now to protect Bugs Bunny, Woody Woodpecker, and, yes, even The New Shmoo. Anyone else we should add to our list of endangered friends?

Of course, you could skip the whole preservation effort and get right to the important question: Which actress deserves the coveted role of Smurfette?

I vote for Jeff Goldblum to play Gargamel. I loved Scooby Doo as a kid, but didn't like Scooby Doo at the box office. All of the actors sucked except the guy from Scream that played Shaggy. Give me the old stuff anyday!

It's not a movie with actors in costume..It's a 3D/CGI cartoon.

where's the movie? and who would play smurfette, hmm... jessica simpson

Mark Sun, Jul 29, 2007 at 02:29 PM EST

Smurfette...I would say it would be pussycat doll member Jessica Sutta, because she's always has the best voice, even in music business.

charmane Tue, Jun 12, 2007 at 06:43 PM EST

i love the smurfs

Amber Tue, Jul 25, 2006 at 08:47 AM EST

They should have John Lithgow from 3rd Rock from the Sun play Gargamel....that would be perfect.

Poohboy Sun, Feb 26, 2006 at 01:39 PM EST

If Sean Connery plays Poppa Smurf, then I'll watch it!

It will make money and that's all that matters. Bill Murry for "Gargamel". They will probably just make it animated so they can make more money with Smurf 2,3,4 etc. How about "Creature From The Black Lagoon"? I think this would make a better movie than what has been in theaters recently. Although, it would be another remake. If Hollywood needs some help I'm available. Hollywood can't think of anything original these days. What’s next Rambo 7, Rocky 12, Incredible Hulk meets Godzilla with Alien riding shotgun. I would be willing to wager that I could make a block buster film that would top all of these in combined sales. Anyone want to invest in the next Blockbuster film; my film? I’m waiting. No guts no glory. No money no glory either. Everlastn1@hotmail.com

prefer 3d animation like shrek though, quite a cool idea

You'd be surprised how popular the smurfs still are. Many children are finding their parents' old collections of the little blue guys and asking their parents to get more for them. In Australia there is a big revival with smurf merchandise and dvds hitting the shops big style! Watch this space! :-)

If you are going to dis the live action remakes of cartoons, you are already to late to save Bugs Bunny. Remember he's co-starred with Brendan Fraser AND Michael Jordan already...

As for Smurfette? Rebecca Romjin Stamos. Thanks to the X Men, we already know she looks good in blue ;)

I would have to say Jessica Simpson would probably be the best to play it...I STILL can't believe hollywood still thinks this is a good idea...esp done as live action. If they think this will help the boxoffice slump, then they should be fired!

Did anyone catch that SNL parody of "The Anna Nicole Show" with "The Smurfette Show", where Smurfette was like grinding on any object, and she's like "My SMURF itches!"?

Rachel Wed, Jun 22, 2005 at 04:19 PM EST

Hey now, hands off "Josie and the Pussycats." I thought that movie was wonderful, campy fun. The producers and director obviously had a tongue-in-cheek take on the material. And how can you criticize a movie where Seth Green, Donald Faison, and Breckin Meyer had hilarious, and uncredited cameos as a boy band called "Du Jour"?!!

But yeah, the smurfs movies sounds like a big, blue trainwreck.

I agree with mag...my 4 year old doesn't even know what a smurf is. Bring back the original cartoons on Nick or Cartoon Network. A movie with real people will SUCK!!!

Aldarras Wed, Jun 22, 2005 at 01:50 PM EST

I would think Smurfette should be someone who's cute but can be seen as not just a pretty face. She has to play up to the fact that she's the only female, but have the moxie to handle both the schtik of the physical comedy that a live-action Smurfs movie will, no doubt, involve.
I would go with one of the Olsens. They have name recognition, experience with slapstick and straight comedy, and the right sort of look and previous video exposure to draw in the younger crowd--who, obviously, would be the target audience for this sort of movie.

Teresa Wed, Jun 22, 2005 at 01:14 PM EST

I think some of the old shows should be left alone. Come on "the smurfs movie" How sad is that. It would be cheaper to bring the original back on a dvd set. If the new generation see's it it should be all Original, not a fake remake. (Don't get me started on Jessica Simpson in The Dukes of Hazzard)What are these people thinking?

mag Wed, Jun 22, 2005 at 01:12 PM EST

Paris Hilton! Since the movie will suck anyway!

Cindy Wed, Jun 22, 2005 at 11:58 AM EST

The real question is who'll play Gargamel...someone very tall I suppose.

RevZ Wed, Jun 22, 2005 at 11:15 AM EST

More rehashed garbage? I think Hollywood needs to fire (or ban) EVERY single writer until they come up with an (oh the horror, I know!) Original idea. Stop remaking everything. Just because it was great the first time -- or most of the time it was mediocre to begin with -- does NOT mean it will be any better. In fact, it almost universally worse.

kjones Wed, Jun 22, 2005 at 10:39 AM EST

how old are the smurfs supposed to be? are they adults? i always thought of them as kids with poppa smurf as their dad.

cc Wed, Jun 22, 2005 at 10:22 AM EST

Smurfette...tough call. I'm going to go with Lindsay. Since she's blonde now. But wait until she turns blue from malnourishment. Less time in make-up.

What about Droopy?
