'Survivor': Jeff Probst gives you a personal tour of the 'Heroes vs. Villains' Tribal Council set

Categories: Reality TV, Survivor

The Tribal Council set in Samoa for Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains is up in the air…literally. Perched Swiss Family Robinson style 40 feet off the ground, the set is one of the most unique in the history of the show. The only thing that would make it any cooler is if Jeff Probst would snuff someone’s torch and then simply push them off the edge into the abyss. (If Jonny Fairplay were around this season, Probst just might.) But you don’t have to wait until Thursday night to see it: As a special treat, the host is going to conduct a private Tribal Council set tour just for you, dear EW.com readers. And watch out, because someone is getting voted off at the very end. To get an advance sneak peak at the new Tribal Council, as presented by Probst himself, click on the video below. (And if you missed some of our other exclusive behind-the-scenes videos, make sure to check out Jeff’s discussion on players who DIDN’T make the cut for Heroes vs. Villains, and also watch the Survivors themselves talk about who is overrated and doesn’t deserve to be there.) 'Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains': Who's overrated? The players give their picks on who doesn't deserve to be there.

We all enjoy playing armchair quarterback, right? Like me, I’m sure there are certain people you think don’t deserve to have been chosen to appear again on Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains. But whom do the players themselves think is overrated and hadn’t rightfully earned their place? Well, we asked them! Some were too nice and diplomatic to answer the question. Others (like Cirie, J.T., Sandra and Tyson) let it fly. And then there is Courtney, who gave an answer that only Courtney could give. Click on the video below to see for yourself. Check back every day this week for exclusive behind-the-scenes video of Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains. (You can also find interviews with all of the players at our super snazzy Survivor video hub.)  And to have all the latest Survivor scoop sent directly to you, follow me on Twitter @EWDaltonRoss. Breaking News: Jeff Probst tells EW.com he has renewed his 'Survivor' contract, but for only one year

Categories: Reality TV, Survivor

Good news, Survivor fans: Jeff Probst, whose contract on the CBS hit reality show was expiring, has decided not to snuff his own torch…yet. The host tells EW.com he will be back on the show past the season’s 20th edition, Heroes vs. Villains (which kicks off Thursday night at 8pm). “What has kept me interested in Survivor for 20 seasons is the study of human nature,” says Probst. “How we justify our ethics, and watching what happens to people when they are put in situations of extreme conflict. Sometimes it’s hard to watch, and sometimes it’s enjoyable to watch, but it is always interesting to watch.”

But, like any good Survivor story, this one has a twist. When Probst renewed his contract in the past (after seasons 12 and 16), it was for four cycles over two years. His latest renewal, however, covers only seasons 21 and 22 and will expire in 2011. While that would seem to indicate that the host is ready to finally call it quits and take his act elsewhere next spring, Probst insists that is not necessarily the case. “I’m not approaching this as my last year of Survivor,” says Probst. “I was just comfortable taking it one year at a time. It certainly made it easier for me to just commit to one year and then we can revisit it again next year if everybody wants to.” [Could Survivor continue if Probst hangs up his snuffer, plus more after the jump.] (Read full post)

'Survivor': Jeff Probst talks about who didn’t make the cut for 'Heroes vs. Villains' -- and why

There’s been a lot of debate as to why certain people made the cast of Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains. Of course, the other side of that is why certain people did not make the final cut. Why isn’t Panama’s Shane Powers on the Villains tribe? Or Thailand champ Brian Heidik? How can you have Heroes without Ozzy, Yul, Terry Deitz, and Mike Skupin? And did they even consider bringing back bad boy-turned-quitter Jonny Fairplay? We went straight to the source for the answers: Jeff Probst. I spoke to Probst in Samoa right as season 20 began filming and he went over who couldn’t make it, who wasn’t invited, and why he hates I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here! more than life itself. All that and more will be revealed in the 3-part video below. Check back every day this week for exclusive behind-the-scenes video of Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains (and see interviews with all the players at our Survivor video hub). 'Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains': Why some players aren't crazy about Rupert

Survivor fans love Rupert. They love the way he’s massive and hairy, but cute and cuddly at the same time — the epitome of a gentle giant. They love the way he stole shoes and wore a skirt in Pearl Islands. They love his tie-dye t-shirt. They love that he is a youth counselor. Survivor fans love Rupert. But here’s a little tip for you: Not all Survivors are as fond of the big guy. Jeff Probst chalks it up to jealousy on the part of other competitors who don’t get nearly the attention that the hippie Hagrid does. That could be it. But plenty of players have grumbled that Rupert has twice gotten a hero’s edit that he did not deserve, and that behind the cutesy cackle is a self-serving attention monger looking out solely for himself. 'Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains': Jerri on the competition -- 'Honestly, I don’t even know their names'

Usually, it is customary before playing a game with relatively high stakes (like, say, a million dollars, for example) to scout out the competition a little bit. You know, do a little film study, find out exactly what you’re up against. What their strengths are that need to be neutralized. What their weaknesses are that can be exploited. So, how much of that did Jerri Manthey do leading up to her appearance on Heroes vs. Villains? How about…none! Heck, she doesn’t even know whom she was playing against! “I do not know who everyone is that’s here,” she admitted to me in Samoa just before the game began. “The people I played in All-Stars with — I know them. Some of them I’ve met before, some of them I’ve met very briefly, and some of them I have no idea who they are. Honestly, I don’t even know their names.” [Jerri claims she's back in Black Widow mode, plus exclusive video after the jump.] (Read full post)

'Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains': Which woman is going to stab James in the back this time?

Poor James. The dude had two hidden immunity idols in his possession and still got voted out in China. Then he watched Parvati disintegrate his fearsome foursome alliance in Micronesia while blindsiding Ozzy. Now James Clement is hoping he doesn’t end up a major blockhead for the third time in Heroes vs. Villains. “I’m kind of like Charlie Brown sometimes,” he told me in Samoa before the game started. “Lucy says she’s gonna hold the ball and I go to kick it and then she moves it away and I fall on my butt. Hopefully this time I kick the ball and get Lucy.” (Read full post)

'Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains': Why everyone wants Parvati gone…and fast

Dangerous. That’s the best word to describe Parvati Shallow when it comes to Survivor. The woman will slay you with a smile. In 19 seasons, I’m not sure I’ve seen anyone play a better social game than Parvati, and I’m not just talking about the flirting either. Obviously, we’ve seen her get cuddly with boys only to discard them when their services (strategic or otherwise) are no longer called for. But it’s not just horny dudes that have fallen under her spell. She was also at the center of the female alliance in Micronesia, acting as a high-powered magnet for newcomers like Natalie and Alexis. She rode that all the way to the end of the game and won the million dollars. If I were a player in Heroes vs. Villains, Parvati would scare the bejeezus out of me and she’d be the first one I’d want out of there — which I suppose is the ultimate sign of respect. 'Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains': Can Tyson back up the tough talk?

Honestly, I was surprised when I first learned that Tyson Apostol would be invited to come back for Heroes Vs Villains. Mainly because it was obvious Coach and J.T. would be in the cast, and three people from a mediocre season (Tocantins) seemed like a bit much. I was almost sure Tyson’s spot would go to Panama’s Shane Powers instead. Shows you what I know. But I get why Tyson was selected for another go round: The guy is a confessional quote machine. Now, don’t get wrong: What he says may drive you crazy and make you want to throw your remote at the TV screen and then stick pins into your homemade Apostol voodoo doll, but, well, isn’t that what a villain is supposed to do? [Why Tyson's social game is underrated, plus exclusive on location video after the jump.] (Read full post)

'Survivor: Heroes Vs. Villains': Courtney says 'I feel like I'm playing with the big dogs here and I'm wrapped in bacon'

I should hate Courtney Yates. I mean, really hate her. She shows up to play Survivor, aggressively goes out of her way to make no moves whatsoever, and then, when she somehow, someway makes it to the finals in China, makes zero effort to win. And then when invited back for Fans Vs. Favorites, says, “No thanks, not interested.” All that could be perceived as a slap in the face to the thousands of people who would do anything to play this game. But I can’t hate Courtney. In fact, I find her fascinating. Maybe it’s because I appreciate seeing someone on TV actually more emaciated than yours truly. Maybe it’s because she can show up on the set of Survivor Talk and start chugging disgusting smoothie concoctions just for the hell of it — no questions asked. But I think it’s something else. I think it is the fact that Courtney has no misconceptions about herself in the least. She is refreshingly honest and candid, not just about other people she is playing against, but about what see sees in the mirror as well.  [Courtney on who is the most overrated person in Heroes Vs. Villains, plus exclusive on location video after the jump.] (Read full post)
