'Super Mario 3' with an acoustic soundtrack

Of all the hundred million reasons to praise Super Mario Bros. 3 — the warp whistles, the shy ghosts, the questionable assertion that raccoon body parts allow you to fly — you should never forget about the iconic musical score by legendary game composer Koji Kondo. Musician Scott Bradlee has put together an acoustic version of the score, set to a hypnotic speed-run of the game. It’s a classy, jazzy tribute, full of fun little moments — pay special attention to the moment around 10:35, when Mario fights Bowser. Check out the full video below:  READ FULL STORY »

PlayStation Network hacker gained access to millions of gamers' personal data, Sony reveals

As if not being able to play any Call of Duty games online wasn’t bad enough, now millions of gamers’ personal information may have been compromised. Sony announced today that its PlayStation Network service — which has been down since April 20 due to an “external intrusion” — was infiltrated by “an unauthorized person” who gained access to gamers’ names, mailing addresses, e-mail addresses, birthdays, logins, and passwords. Although Sony says there’s no evidence that users’ credit card data was stolen, the company says it cannot rule out the possibility. The PlayStation Network, which allows PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable users to download and play games, movies, and music online, serves a reported 77 million accounts worldwide, making this one of the largest breaches of personal identity data ever. 'Call of Duty' expansion pack: Fight zombies as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Machete, and Freddy Krueger! Kind of!

Call of Duty: Black Ops wasn’t perfect, but it featured a truly awesome mini-game, in which you play as John F. Kennedy, Richard Nixon, Fidel Castro, and Robert McNamara and try to fight off a horde of zombies attacking the Pentagon. (Between Black Ops and the new X-Men movie, the youth of America will officially never, ever accurately understand the Cold War.) For the upcoming Escalation expansion set, the designers have taken the whole zombie thing and run with it: In the new map called “Call of the Dead,” you can play as Sarah Michelle Gellar in her Buffy wardrobe, Danny Trejo in Machete mode, a pitchfork-wielding Robert Englund (a.k.a. Freddy Krueger), and Michael Rooker (the star of Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer who was recently seen on The Walking Dead).  READ FULL STORY »

Nintendo will release a new, post-Wii console in 2012

Remember the GameCube? The cutest widdle videogame console, which sported a Spyro-purple paint job that made it look a little bit like an overgrown steampunk SweeTart? The GameCube debuted in 2001 and looked deliriously out of place in a moment when the videogame world was trending towards badassery (the XBox), epic swagger (the PS2), and the ability to actually play DVDs. Thanks to the GameCube, the iconic gamesmasters at Nintendo spent the first half of the decade lost in the wilderness. What a difference a generation makes: Nintendo debuted the Wii in 2006, igniting a revolution in casual gaming that paid off with an estimated 86 million devices sold worldwide. (By comparison, both the XBox 360 and the PS3 have only just sold 50 million.) Now, Nintendo has officially announced that it will debut the successor to the Wii in 2012. READ FULL STORY »

New 'Child of Eden' trailer: The most strangely beautiful, and profoundly trippy, video game ever?

Have you ever enjoyed a hallucinogen-fueled siesta in front of an HD screensaver at a day spa? Then you might know what watching the new Child of Eden trailer is like: an ethereal romp through space teeming with lasers and flying neon whales, the upcoming Xbox 360/PlayStation 3 game seems to combine elements of an aerial shooter with a psychedelic return-to-the-womb. And it’s expected to support Kinect and PlayStation Move, which would require physical motion on your part. Completely doable, as long as the trippy graphics and tranquilizing music don’t leave you wide-eyed and drooling, that is. READ FULL STORY »

Emma Watson introduces the trailer for 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows -- Part 2' videogame -- EXCLUSIVE

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 2, the final film in the blockbuster movie franchise, brings to a close a few other long-running aspects of the Harry Potter franchise, as well. Among them: the last official videogame adaptation, due in stores July 12, just three days before the opening of the film. The Harry Potter videogames from publisher Electronic Arts and developer EA Bright Light Studios have gotten better as the series has progressed, with the recent installments doing a commendable job of capturing the darkening tone of J.K. Rowling’s stories and making wand fighting actually rather fun and cool. Judging from the cinema-style trailer for Deathly Hallows – Part 2 (which includes a brief, friendly intro from Hermione’s movie alter-ego, Emma Watson), EA intends to go out with its biggest bang yet. Although I have to admit, what sticks with me the most from this spot isn’t the demonstration of how the game plays, but the sick sight of Hogwarts under catastrophic siege by Lord Voldemort’s forces. Based on what I know of the movie, these images are a pretty accurate representation of the all-out wizarding war that awaits us on the big screen this summer. Check out the trailer below:  READ FULL STORY »

The secret of 'Super 8'/'Portal 2' interactive teaser? How about... gigantic monster humans from Wisconsin!

Super-8-map-Portal-2

With Super 8, one of the summer’s most eagerly anticipated would-be blockbusters, Lost co-creator and Star Trek director J.J. Abrams has made his most personal movie yet, one that speaks of a ‘70s childhood spent watching films and making films with his super-8 camera. With the marketing of Super 8, Abrams is indulging his zeal for more of-the-moment, cutting-edge media. On the heels of launching a Web-based scavenger hunt for strips of film that hint at Super 8’s backstory, Abrams has teamed with the makers of the just-released Portal 2 videogame (read our review here) to release an animated tease for Super 8. 'Portal 2' videogame review: Physics is phunny

Portal-2-game

Much will be written about how smartly designed Portal 2 is, and that’s not to be disputed. But what particularly stands out about the game is its nonstop humor. Portal 2 is the most hilarious form of entertainment I’ve encountered so far this year. There’s a delectably British sensibility to the jokes, even though developer Valve Corporation is based in the decidedly non-British city of Bellevue, Wash. For instance, one of my favorite gags is a sign that points to two nearby destinations: the Employee Daycare Center and Neurotoxin Production Center. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. After all, Portal 2 is, first and foremost, a physics-based puzzle game. READ FULL STORY »

Who's voting for Michael Vick as the 'Madden NFL12' coverboy? Can you say jinx?

Michael-Vick

For this year’s edition of its billion-dollar football video franchise, Electronic Arts teamed up with ESPN to let fans vote on which stud athlete would grace the cover of Madden NFL12. Thirty-two stars were slotted in a tournament bracket, and the contest is now down to two finalists: Peyton Hillis and Michael Vick. Meaning that this year’s coverboy will be either a convicted dog-abuser, or a relatively unsung player you wouldn’t recognize even as he ran you over on his way to the endzone. Though I’m sure the Madden folks believe that their product would sell even with O.J. Simpson on the cover, I’m guessing Vick and Hillis weren’t their top choices to be the face of their game.

It’s tempting to see Vick’s impressive showing as a sign that he’s finally moved past the illegal dog fighting and horrible treatment of animals that landed him in prison for 19 months, but Hillis’ candidacy indicates that the cover vote isn’t exactly a pure popularity contest. (The last two Super Bowl winning quarterbacks, Drew Brees and Aaron Rogers, have been eliminated.) READ FULL STORY »
