Scripps National Spelling Bee boasts frenemies, winner who is much smarter than you

Forget the Super Bowl or the World Series: The most exciting competition of the year is the Scripps National Spelling Bee, which crowned a new winner last night. Intrigue, nerves, vocabulary — how can you not get revved up watching a competition featuring tweens that are far smarter than you’ll ever be? (Refreshing, though, isn’t it, that there are some out there whose interests extend beyond Justin Bieber and ruining our language one text at a time. Another draw: The competition hosted a pair of frenemies. Amazing.) Fourteen-year-old Sukanya Roy adorably picked up the win for spelling the word “Cymotrichous” correctly — you gotta love the way she knew she had it in the bag as soon as she got to the “t” in the word.

Also, props to Roy for not even breaking concentration when Dr. Jacques Bailly referenced Bon Jovi while using “Cymotrichous” in a sentence. (After all, it does mean “having the hair wavy.”) Whether that’s because she was focused, or has no idea who Bon Jovi is (get off my lawn, kids! I’m old) remains up in the air. READ FULL STORY »

'Cougar Town': Aloha means hello and goodbye. How dumb is that?

Aloha from ”We will never stop mocking the title…Cougar Town!” Here’s the good news: ABC treated us with a special, hour-long episode of CT set in Hawaii! The bad news: It was the season finale. Our favorite cul-de-sac crew will not return until November. (I’ll pause for you to pound some grape in an effort to deal with the news….) In the meantime, we’ve got a lot to cover. Let’s dive right in. READ FULL STORY »

'Glee' countdown: New York, concrete jungle where dreams are made

UPDATE: Glee season finale recap is live!

We’ve been building up to this all season on Glee, and now Nationals in New York are finally upon us! New Directions will get to sing Broadway showtunes on Broadway, and everyone (except for New Yorkers) loves lavish song-and-dance numbers on city streets, especially when balloons and dancing law enforcement officers are involved. We’ve been promised that everything will be bigger in the Big Apple: big songs, big drama, and even an “epic” Finnchel date worthy of Mr. Big. Lea Michele told EW that the dream date takes the pair through Central Park and the West Village — do I smell a horse-drawn carriage? (Ew.)  READ FULL STORY »

Baby, baby, baby, ew: Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez share (another) awkward kiss

Sorry, Harold Camping, but this is what the end of the world looks like. Well, for tween girls, anyway.

During Sunday night’s broadcast of the 2011 Billboard Music Awards, Top New Artist winner Justin Bieber planted one on his ladyfriend Selena Gomez on live television, for all the world to see. Not only devastating his young female fans, but making people of all ages terribly uncomfortable. READ FULL STORY »

Al Roker becomes the fifth Wiggle: 'This will be one of the highlights of my career' -- WATCH!

For Today‘s Anchors Abroad series, Al Roker traveled to Australia to join The Wiggles live on onstage, dressed as grapes, and in the music video, “Thank You, Weatherman,” dressed in an orange skivvy. And yet, my favorite part of this whole stunt is when we cut back to Roker and the ladies of Today in the studio this morning after the U.S. premiere of the video and they were dancing. We’ll miss Meredith Vieira’s enthusiasm. That’s in the second clip below. Enjoy.  READ FULL STORY »

'Cougar Town': Fear the chalk children

Much like the beginning of last week’s episode of We Should Have Live Cougars On Cougar Town, Travis was still hanging out in the dark mourning the loss of Kirsten. He hadn’t even been going to college. It was a Travisty. (See what I did there?) But breakups are hard. It took Jules a year to bounce back after she and Bobby split up, and it was the worst weekend of Bobby’s life.

Travis finally admitted that college might not be right for him after he was caught lying about being on spring break. So Jules gave him an ultimatum: Go back to college or move out and get a job. Travis knew his mom’s new tough love attitude wasn’t really her, despite her claim that she “tosses asses.” But who was she kidding? She couldn’t even let her son eat stale chips. Sure enough, Jules’ tough-love act didn’t last for long. Instead, she and Travis had a kite-flying, sandcastle-building day at the beach. Happy 25th birthday, Rob Pattinson! Here are 25 things that endeared you to me.

robert-pattinson

Ready to feel old? Today, Twilight star Robert Pattinson is 25 years old. That’s right: Though I’m still sticking by my theory that the guy has existed since the days of Easter Island (they have the same profile, guys!), Pattinson apparently just today turned a quarter-century years old. So, to celebrate this holiday, I’m going to slap on my beanie and list 25 things that endeared the coiffed-one to me. Without further ado:

25. As you see above, he can pull off the same jacket as Ron Burgundy.

24. He writes his own music, but doesn’t shove his music career down our throats like other actors-turned-musicians.

23. In 2009, even he looked like he wasn’t sure why he was at the Academy Awards. READ FULL STORY »

'Glee' Countdown: Prom, the most magical night of the year

If you’re like me and managed to avoid the Extragate spoilers, it’s still an exciting race for prom queen! Will McKinley get Zized? Or will perfect-nosed Quinn fulfill her royal destiny? Is there any way Santana and Karofsky’s scheme will work out? In my dreams, Rachel will win in a ballot-stuffing prank and go Carrie on everyone after a bucket of Slushee rains down on her. But it looks like she’ll have a fun, fun, fun, fun night after all. If no one asks you to prom, what do you do? READ FULL STORY »

Justin Bieber kisses Selena Gomez. Where does this rank amongst pop culture's most awkward smooches?

Justin Bieber’s caught-on-camera kiss with girlfriend Selena Gomez is awkward for two reasons: 1) The way Gomez goes in for a second peck, and catches Bieber’s cheek instead, and 2) I really feel as though I shouldn’t be analyzing the way two teenagers smooch — especially in slow motion. And yet, here I am doing just that anyway! Oh, blogging.

But where does this rank amongst pop culture’s most awkward kisses? READ FULL STORY »
