'Halo 3: ODST' trailer: The ass-kickingest thing you'll see all day

Can someone remind me why there isn’t already a Halo movie? (Oh, right, because Hollywood is stupid.)

It’s like one of those Marine Corps ads you see in theaters — all somber and determined, yet hopeful and triumphant — but with aliens and spaceships and sweet, sweet helmets. (And I dug how no one speaks a recognizable language — better to swallow international audiences with.) I don’t know if the game is gonna be any good, but some advertising exec just earned his check.

Man, I could watch that all day. And probably will. Sorry, boss…productivity’s gonna dip a bit.

Comics and lingerie get it on, and it's not sexy...at all

If there are two things that I love, it’s comic books and mostly nude women. So one would think that putting them together would be like bunnies and carrots (though, as the Buffy musical once asked, what do they need such good eyesight for, anyway?). But this borderline SFW promo for Agent Provocateur’s new superheroine-inspired lingerie line — and attendant comic book — defies logic:

Somehow, this manages to be insulting to comic readers and spectacularly unsexy at the same time. In a season of comic-book mergers — Disney and Marvel, Warner Bros. and DC — this is one I could’ve done without. Am I alone? Ladies, would you wear anything advertised here? On purpose?

UPDATE: Operation 'Nathan Fillion, feel free to stop by' is working

I’ve been waging something of a one-man internet campaign to get the rakish Castle star to stop by the EW offices during his NYC visit next week. And what do I see pop up on my Twitter feed the other day? This:

fillion tweet

He’s teasing me, I know it. Toying with my emotions. Pawing at me like a very rugged cat playing with a ball of yarn. But I think it’s working. Stay tuned.

Please, 'A-Team' movie...tell me THIS isn't your B.A.

BA-Baracas-Rampage-Jackson_lI’ve nothing against the UFC or its champions. I’m not a moron: I don’t want to get hurt. But I am hoping for more from director Joe Carnahan and producers Ridley and Tony Scott when it comes to casting their A-Team movie. You’ve got Liam Neeson for Hannibal and Bradley Cooper for Faceman…but now we’re seeing reports that you’ve settled on Quenton “Rampage” Jackson for B.A. Barracus? [Neither 20th Century Fox nor the UFC responded to EW's requests for confirmation.]

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: B.A. (portrayed by Mr. T in the TV series) doesn’t need to be a musclebound mountain of a man. He needs to be scary. Intelligence and ruthlessness are scarier than body mass. And maybe I’m wrong about Jackson and he’d bring everything the role requires — and then some. But I’m just not feeling it. I just hope with the last outstanding role to cast — the loose-cannon Murdock — I’m pleasantly surprised.

How does news of Rampage’s casting sit with you: tired or inspired?

'Judge Dredd' redux: It might actually be good

judge-dredd-stallone_lWe Americans have had a sad history with Judge Dredd. The hardcore lawman, first published in Britain’s sci-fi anthology comic 2000 AD in 1977, is probably the most popular U.K. comic book character ever. He’s been written by luminaries like Grant Morrison, Garth Ennis, and Mark Millar. He is to British pop culture what Dirty Harry is to America’s: an uncompromising view of justice in a world that’s lost its way. And, most notoriously, Judge Dredd was adapted into the godawful 1995 Sylvester Stallone disaster, which marked the beginning of the end of Sly’s residence on Hollywood’s A-list.

The good news for lovers of Dredd, and dystopian sci-fi ass-kickery in general, is that Danny Boyle’s production company, DNA, is shepherding a new version of Dredd to the big screen, and they’ve engaged Alex Garland (28 Days Later, Sunshine) to write the script. And the cherry on top of this particular sundae is that British comics artist Jock (The Losers) is doing production designs, as he indicated in his Twitter feed.

All of which leads me to be hopeful for a new Judge Dredd movie — though I’d be more hopeful if Boyle signs on to direct. Where do you fall: eager, fearful, or don’t really care?

Nathan Fillion, Feel free to stop by!

castle-book_lI have written about Nathan Fillion quite a bit. Some might say too much. My wife, for one, who is neither a Browncoat (though I’m working on that; a Labor Day Firefly marathon was received rather well) nor a Castle watcher, would agree. If I had a therapist, I’m sure my man-crush obsession would find its way onto the to-do-on-the-couch list. I can usually keep said man-crush controlled…until I hear news like “Nathan Fillion will be at the NYC Apple Store in Soho on 9/18.” Then, the gears start turning, and I start wondering aloud, to coworkers, on Twitter, “How can I get Nathan Fillion to come to the Entertainment Weekly offices?” (Read full post)

Guy Ritchie's 'Lobo': More splatter, less PG-13

lobo-guy-ritchie_lI like Guy Ritchie, director of British underworld gems like Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch, as well as Robert Downey Jr.’s upcoming Sherlock Holmes redux. And I like Lobo, the DC Comics interstellar bounty hunter created by Keith Giffen in the ’80s, who revels in wanton, planet-scale acts of mayhem. Lobo, who rides a giant space-faring motorcycle-sled-thing, is the last of his race…because he killed the rest of his people. Probably because he thought calling himself  ”the last of his race” sounded cool. Lobo, who used “frag” as a four-letter substitute decades before “frak” came into vogue. So the two of them seem like a match made in director-subject heaven, right? Well, they would be if Warner Bros’ proposed Lobo flick wasn’t planned as a PG-13. (Read full post)

Marvel and Disney, sitting in a tree: What does that mean for you and me?

disney-buys-marvel_lIn case you hadn’t heard the news that pierced the geekosphere this morning, like Cyclops’ eye-beam through the fog, Disney is in the process of acquiring Marvel Entertainment for something like $4 billion. Details are only beginning to come out regarding the specifics of the deal — What will this mean for characters like Spider-Man (which calls Sony his movie home) and Iron Man (set up at Paramount)? Will this affect the comic licenses that Disney has granted to Boom! Studios for Pixar’s Cars and The Incredibles, as well as The Muppets? — so it’s a little early to start making judgments on the wisdom of said deal. But I hope it changes Marvel Comics in one simple way: Diversification. (Read full post)

'Dollhouse': TV show, or repository for geek-hall-of-fame actors?

glau-whedon_lWith the news today that Summer Glau — of the late Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles — will be joining Dollhouse for a few episodes, and once more going to work for Joss Whedon (who first cast her in an episode of Angel before making her the damaged heart of Firefly), something has become clear: Dollhouse is a nerd-actor oasis.

Glau will be joining Battlestar Galactica veterans Jamie Bamber and Michael Hogan, as well as Buffy/Angel alum Alexis Denisof and Dexter’s Keith Carradine — all of whom have signed on for the second season of Dollhouse. Which begs a question: Who else should book an appointment in the Dollhouse? I mean, if we’re gonna go this route, and stud the show with all these recognizable sci-fi faces, who would you like to see? (I’ve got my fingers crossed for Buck Rogers’ Erin Gray.)
