Since when were female law enforcement officials the hottest commodity on TV?

Female-law-enforcementAmerican audiences have been taken into custody by a group of no-nonsense, tight-business-suit-wearing females in the justice department. This summer it seems like every channel you flip to features a high-profile show about an impossibly beautiful woman fighting crime. These girls are powerful and well-trained, with an uncanny ability to chase down their foes in heels, and whether they’re cops, spies, detectives, or judges, these women are taking down criminals — and arresting huge numbers of viewers. Could this be the new television trend? Just take a look at the evidence from the past week:

  • The season premiere of TNT’s smash hit The Closer, which features Kyra Sedgwick as Deputy Chief Brenda Johnson, found a huge 7.7 million viewers. READ FULL STORY »

Krispy Kreme Cheerwine doughnut announced: Let's brainstorm other ultimate Southern collaborations.

Cheerwine-Krispy-Kreme-doughnutYesterday morning, North Carolina Governor Bev Perdue introduced the world to a dessert so unabashedly sweet, so egregiously caloric, so overwhelmingly Southern that Paula Deen is kicking herself for not thinking of it first. The treat in question is a Krispy Kreme doughnut, filled with Cheerwine-flavored creme and topped with chocolate glaze and sprinkles. Now, for those of you unfamiliar with Cheerwine, it’s a super-carbonated cherry concoction bottled in North Carolina. You’ll pretty much only find it in the South, so chances are, if you’ve never been to a Piggly Wiggly, you’ve never seen Cheerwine, either. Just take my word for it: It’s delicious. With the introduction of Cheerwine creme, the doughnut delicacy has reached a whole other stratosphere of Southern-ness. So the delicious collaboration has me pondering what other Southern pairings we can expect in the coming months. Sweet-tea-glazed cheese straws? Pork-rinds coated in peanut brittle? Fried butter balls floating in mint juleps? Biscuits stuffed full of Virginia ham? (Oh, wait.)

But let me turn this over to you, PopWatchers. What other Southern couples have the potential to take over the culinary world? Do you think this veritable diabetes explosion sounds as tasty as I do?

'Jersey Shore' red carpet: On the scene at the soundtrack release party

jersey-shoreImage Credit: Janet Mayer/PR PhotosGuidos, rappers, Housewives, drag queens, and a singularly unique creature named Snooki. These were just some of the guests at the Jersey Shore soundtrack release party at New York club Marquee yesterday. I had the opportunity to work the red carpet for EW at the event, and let me tell you, it was an experience I won’t soon forget. Here’s how the tackiest night of my life went down… READ FULL STORY »

Exclusive: 'Iron Man 2' DVD/Blu-ray special features focus on the future of the franchise

iron-man-2-labImage Credit: Francois DuhamelWhen fall rolls around this year, millions of people will stare in wonder at the little blurs of red and gold flying through the sky. I’m not talking about gently falling leaves – I’m talking about the home market release of Iron Man 2. Paramount will release the movie on DVD and Blu-ray on Sept. 28, and they’ve given EW the exclusive first look at the featurettes. If you’re a superhero geek like me (and given Iron Man 2‘s $309 million gross, there’s a good chance you are), this is certainly reason for excitement. So, in an effort to unlock every bit of information I can about the Iron Man universe, I’ve spent a good while perusing the titles of these featurettes (listed below), and I’ve come to a few conclusions: READ FULL STORY »

'Tosh.0' attracts 2.4 million viewers: The best pop culture clip show out there?

daniel-tosh-computerImage Credit: Ian White/Comedy CentralCould Comedy Central ever have known what a hit Tosh.0 would become when they launched it in June 2009? A web-clip show modeled after The Soup, Tosh.0 features comedian Daniel Tosh offering his spin on viral Internet videos, and in just one year, the program has grown from “3-year-old crying over Justin Bieber” levels of notoriety to “Charlie bit my finger — again!” levels of fame. Now, in its second season, Tosh.0‘s most recent episodes have garnered more than 2 million viewers, with the most recent airing achieving a huge 2.4 million. This is a far cry from the first season average, which came in at just above a million viewers, so it’s no surprise that Comedy Central has already renewed the program for a third season, set to debut in January 2011. Still, I’m wondering: In a television landscape inundated with pop-culture clip shows like The Soup, The Dish, and Web Soup, why is Tosh.0 blowing up?

Is it the host? Clearly, audiences are on board with Tosh’s brand of frat star/web geek humor, and while some write him off as obnoxious, he has a knack for making pop culture accessible to the uninitiated. READ FULL STORY »

Forget all the 'X-Men: First Class' casting rumors: What mutants are YOU hoping to see?

x-men-mutantsImage Credit: Marvel EntertainmentThe casting decisions surrounding Fox’s forthcoming blockbuster X-Men: First Class have been coming at us faster than a speeding bullet. (Yes, that is a DC Comics reference. Deal with it.) First there was Professor X. Then Magneto. Then Emma Frost. Then Beast, Banshee, and Havok. It seems like every time I turn around, a new mutant has been cast, and much like Deadpool at the end of X-Men Origins: Wolverine, my head is spinning (Though, still attached). For now, I’m just trying to ignore all the casting rumors. I don’t know who is going to end up in the final movie. I don’t know if Fox is trying to mislead the media and keep their superhero lineup under wraps. All I know is that there are a few X-Men I’m dying to see on the big screen, and I haven’t heard anything about them yet!

DISCLAIMER: The X-Men universe is pretty flexible. READ FULL STORY »

What movie makes you proudest to be an American? Least proud?

saving-private-ryanJuly 4th is upon us, and people across the good ol’ U.S. of A. are gearing up to celebrate. Some of us plan to cook outside with our families and watch a dazzling fireworks display. Others might crack open a beer and some cracker jacks at their favorite baseball team’s diamond. Many will visit memorials for the men who fought for America’s independence. You know, the standard stuff. But there’s another 4th of July tradition that shouldn’t be forgotten: watching patriotic movies. For a lot of people, Independence Day is an annual excuse to turn on a great movie about our great country and appreciate the land where we live.

I’ve been thinking about which movies tug my American heartstrings the most. READ FULL STORY »

Entertainment Weekly intern: A day in the life

Tags:

How can you tell that times are changing? When you can make a video, post it on YouTube, and get a summer job out of it! Well, actually, there was a lot more to it than that — you know, interviews and applications and writing samples — but my shameless attempt to get a dream EW internship eventually led to…a real EW internship! Now I’m here, and it’s great.

I’ve been working in the EW New York offices for almost a month now, and things couldn’t be going any better. I’m learning, I’m writing, and I’m soaking in the whole experience. Since I’m having such a good time, I thought it might be fun to give people a little glimpse of what it’s like to be an intern here, so I put together another video — only this time, it’s in the EW offices, not my bedroom. Check out what a day in the life of an EW intern is like: READ FULL STORY »

'Pawn Stars': Rick Harrison talks about cable's most unlikely hit!

Pawn-Stars-RichImage Credit: Joey L/History ChannelIf you’ve never seen The History Channel’s Pawn Stars, you are seriously missing out. Much like an actual pawn shop, this good-natured reality show — which airs Monday nights at 10 p.m. ET — has a little bit of everything: unbelievable objects, absurd stories, ridiculous family banter, and surprise fortunes. Viewers can’t get enough of the cable smash, which is reaching ratings heights that almost any network would be willing to trade for. We got the chance to speak with shop-owner Rick Harrison, the man-in-charge on Pawn Stars, about the success of the show, his old man’s work ethic, honesty in the pawn business, and a whole lot more.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: How did the show come about?
RICK HARRISON:
I was pitching the show for four years, and nothing ever came of it. Out of the blue, Leftfield Pictures calls me up and says, “Hey, we’re thinking about trying to do a reality show in a pawn shop.” I said, “Oh, really? I’ve been trying to get this thing going for four years!” It was really refreshing. They were from New York. They weren’t from Hollywood. They were really business-minded, from the first call with them to being on the air for six months, and from there, the ratings just kept on going up. READ FULL STORY »

Wimbledon tennis match has gone on for 10 hours: What else could you do in that time?

Tags:

Isner-and-MahutImage Credit: Hamish Blair/Getty ImagesFirst the World Cup, now this? What an exciting day for sports news! After almost ten hours of play at Wimbledon, a first-round match between American John Isner and France’s Nicolas Mahut has become the longest match in tennis history — and it still isn’t over! Due to a rule that prohibits fifth-set tiebreakers at Wimbledon, the tennis stars are currently tied at 59-59, and the match has been suspended until Thursday.  It must be grueling for the players, but the audience must be exhausted as well. I’m sure some bored spectator  thought, “I’d rather watch grass grow than watch this for another hour,” only to realize that on Wimbledon’s courts, you can do both. Tennis jokes aside, though, this record-breaking match has got me wondering: What else could I accomplish in ten hours? I’ll start the list below, and you can serve up your ideas in the comments!
