The Kardashians come out with their own line of Silly Bandz: What will they think of next?

Not a family to shy away from expanding their empire, the Kardashian sisters have joined the ranks of celebrities like Justin Bieber and John Mayer and have announced their own line of Kardashian-branded Silly Bandz. The ubiquitous brightly colored rubber bracelets will come in Kardashian-themed shapes: a letter K, a purse, a high heel, the logo of their store (Dash), a diamond ring, a perfume bottle, silhouettes of the three girls, and some really deformed looking lips. I can only wonder how many episodes into the season of Kourtney & Kim Take New York it’ll take until we see the sisters donning their own Silly Bandz. (It will be like their very own Wriststrong!)

I can’t say I’m surprised that the Kardashians have come out with a set of Silly Bandz, but it really makes me wonder what the sisters could possibly come up with next. READ FULL STORY »

'Home Alone' gets reenacted by Twitter actors and doesn't lose its charm

Home-Alone-TwitterFew things signify that the holidays are finally here like my all too frequent viewings of my favorite movie, Home Alone. I’m firmly in the school of thought that Home Alone is a surprisingly timeless tale, but I can totally understand how some people might like to see it done with a more modern twist. An updated Home Alone isn’t necessarily a bad thing — the movie did celebrate its 20th anniversary last month — but losing its 1990 flavor (Kevin’s reindeer sweaters! A fun house without high tech gadgets to catch the robbers!) would, in my eyes, probably negatively impact any 2010 adaptation of my most beloved childhood movie. Enter the great Twitter reenactment, a perfect way for Home Alone to translate to 2010 tech friendly audiences who may not want to devote two hours to actually watching the movie.

Today a group of Geek Squad representatives have adopted appropriately named character Twitter handles to reenact Home Alone. While some handles are perfect in their simplicity — Buzz’s pet tarantula and bed-wetting cousin Fuller made me smile — the ones behind the movie’s major characters actually hit the nail right on the head. There’s some verbatim quoting, a lot of describing thoughts and actions in brief 140-character bursts, and even the famed Wet Bandits enter Kevin’s house of pain scene reads really well in the Twitter format.

Elle Fanning's busy December: 'Somewhere,' 'The Nutcracker 3D,' and a Vanity Fair feature

Elle-FanningImage Credit: Jon Kopaloff/Getty ImagesAfter years of Dakota Fanning effortlessly playing every child role on the big screen, it’s time for her 12-year-old sister Elle to have her deserved moment in the spotlight. December has proven to be a pretty big month for the girl who is not yet even a teenager. She’ll appear in one of my favorite movies of the year, Sofia Coppola’s Somewhere, in addition to the big-budget The Nutcracker 3D, and she even has a Vanity Fair spotlight feature about her. She may not have won the Homecoming Queen title this year like Dakota, but I’d say that proving her acting chops and getting featured by Vanity Fair is an upgrade — and hey, she still has more than a few years to win that crown.

On top of being really talented, and more or less always picking great roles, I’ve always liked both Fanning sisters because of how down-to-earth they always come across in interviews. READ FULL STORY »

Katy Perry joins Darren Criss and the Dalton Academy Warblers to sing 'Teenage Dream'

Darren-Criss-Katy-PerryImage Credit: Michael Buckner/Getty ImagesIn the off chance that “Teenage Dream” fatigue has not yet kicked in, last night at the Trevor Project Live benefit in Hollywood, Darren Criss and the Dalton Academy Warblers performed the mega-hit “Teenage Dream” with a very special surprise guest. About halfway through the performance, Katy Perry took the stage, sang some big vocal ad libs, and then joined the group for the rest of the song. Whether you think she added something to Darren and the Warblers’ performance or not, it was great to finally see Katy join Darren and perform the hit at such a special event rather than on a television show. Check out the (very blurry) video for yourself — Perry shows up around the 1:22 mark:  READ FULL STORY »

Cutest marketing tactic ever: Mozilla Firefox streams round-the-clock videos of baby firefoxes

red-panda-firefoxImage Credit: Stan Osolinski/Getty ImagesMozilla Firefox finally wants you to know that firefoxes actually do exist  — they’re red pandas — and have come up with the cutest way to show off the inspiration behind their mascot… while getting you to download a software upgrade.

Head over to FirefoxLive.org, and you can view a 24-hour stream of the red panda cubs, along with their parents and aunt, going about their days at the Knoxville Zoo in Knoxville, Tenn. The frolic cam is the most entertaining, but if the cubs begin looking bored, there’s a solution: You can to download the latest Mozilla Firefox update. If enough people download the upgrade, the firefoxes get a jungle gym for playtime. How cute would that be?

After you’ve downloaded the upgrade, you can click around the site, learning about the endangered species and how to support both the Knoxville Zoo and red pandas in the wild, through an Adopt a Panda program in Nepal and India. You can even follow the action on Twitter at the @cubcaretaker handle. Warm fuzzies for your Friday afternoon! I wonder how PopWatch can adopt an animal mascot, and which one we should choose.

Have you visited the firefox-cams yet, PopWatchers? Do you think they’re cuter than the puppy cams I’ve grown so used to?

It's Shake 'N Bake, and 3-year-old Taylor Momsen helped... without raccoon eyes

I’m so accustomed to seeing Taylor Momsen as a teen angst-ridden, raccoon-eyed actress, that I admittedly have forgotten that she was an incredibly cute little kid. In the days before Little J started scheming against Blair & Co., on Gossip Girl, little Momsen starred in commercials, including this highly adorable Shake ‘N Bake ad. So before tonight’s episode of Gossip Girl, enjoy this video of Momsen, in which the scariest thing in the video isn’t seeing a 17-year-old girl in lingerie, but rather the freakishly unnatural sound of chicken crunching as it’s first bitten into.

Before you can ask yourself how this little moppet hocking Shake ‘N Bake transformed into this generation’s bleach blond Elvira, Momsen recently spoke out against her parents, saying that they robbed her of her childhood. (Her parents signed her up with Ford modeling agency at age two — she’s three in this commercial — and since then, “I didn’t have friends. I was working constantly, and I didn’t have a life,” Momsen said.)

What do you think about little Taylor Momsen, PopWatchers? Does anyone else remember this commercial? READ FULL STORY »

Betty White is our newest Forest Ranger

Betty-WhiteImage Credit: Kris Connor/Getty ImagesLooking at Betty White’s resumé, it would be hard to imagine that she still had some career dreams that were left unfulfilled… until yesterday. Apparently, a young Betty White once dreamed of becoming a forest ranger — a career not allowed for women during White’s youth. But yesterday, the Forest Service presented her with a badge and the rangers’ iconic Stetson hat in a ceremony that made Betty White an honorary forest ranger. Is there anything left on Betty White’s bucket list? (I hope so.)

White had a very outdoorsy youth, which is hard for me to picture, because when I imagine the actress in the great outdoors, the scene in which she dances around a campfire chanting in The Proposal is the only thing that comes to mind. Some of White’s first memories, though, include riding horses with her father in the High Sierra and camping in Yellowstone. After stressing the importance of preserving the wilderness, the actress told the Forest Service, “In my heart I’ve been a forest ranger all my life, but now I’m official.” And I wonder what her first official order of business will be? Chiller's 24-hour 'Buffy' marathon: Change your Sunday plans!

Buffy-Sarah-Spike-vampireImage Credit: Jerry WolfeIn case you like waking up really early on Sunday mornings and were looking for something to do that involves vampires instead of football, this news is for you: Chiller announced via press release that they will be running a 24-hour marathon of the first season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer this Sunday, starting at the bright hour of 6 a.m. EST. Remember, vampires never sleep, so 6 a.m. is fine for them, but for us mortals, be sure to set your DVR to catch this marathon of amazingness. (Public Service Announcement: On Sunday the clocks fall back, so change your clock and enjoy the extra hour that may make an early morning Buffy marathon a bit more enjoyable.)

The marathon kicks off Buffy‘s daily run on Chiller — which begins Monday — and yes, the series will run in order, which is great for newbies and Buffy enthusiasts alike. I, for one, have been catching episodes of Buffy on LOGO, but I’d also really enjoy starting from the very beginning, if only to remind myself why the series was the most memorable show of my teenage years.

As excited as I am to see the first season and laugh at the ’90s fashion, the episode I’m most excited to see is “Angel,” because it’s the episode that got me hooked on Buffy in the first place. The first epic kiss! The star-crossed lovers! A vampire falling in love with a vampire slayer! Which episode of Buffy are you most excited to see, PopWatchers?

'The Walking Dead' walks on Google Maps

As much as I’ve always loved the utility of Google maps, I never pegged it as a service applicable to pop culture. But, apparently, it is. See: this fantastic and spoiler-filled Google map geared entirely around The Walking Dead, also known as the coolest thing I’ve seen all day.

Jason McDonald created the completely annotated map, which chronicles the births, deaths, appearances, and other events and locations from the 78 issues of The Walking Dead comic book series. It’s certainly made me want to delve further into Robert Kirkman’s world — I find it pretty cool to see a comic-turned-TV series that’s so rooted in fantasy (zombies!) through a lens of something so familiar to my everyday existence. I’ve loved the Walking In Holden Caulfield’s Footsteps map, but this map takes it to the next level. Which other shows, books, or movies would you like to see get the Google map treatment?

Those of you who’ve read all The Walking Dead books, give it a look and sound off below as to the accuracy of the map, and those of you who are looking to avoid spoilers, check the map — and read the comments — with caution.

The Situation wants 'Today' show viewers to know that 'grenade' is a humorous term

Today The Situation can add “author” to his ever growing resume. (The day the phrase “New York Times best-selling” precedes that “author” will be one that may make me shed a single tear.) To promote his new book Here’s The Situation, Mike Sorrentino stopped by the Today show for an interview with Al Roker, who asked him about the interesting subtitle for his book, “A guide to creeping on chicks, avoiding grenades, and getting in your GTL on the Jersey Shore.”

For us Jersey Shore faithful, that subtitle seems innocuous enough. Sitch’s talking points on the show don’t seem to go past grenades, creeping on girls, and GTL, and that may be why I personally derive so much laughter at his expense enjoy him. But Roker, like so many people, rightly questions whether the term “grenade” — a not-so-attractive girl for those not down with the lingo — is offensive to women. (See video embedded after the jump.)
