Google employees develop gadgets that help make the world a better place. Sometimes they get kids to help.

Today’s Google doodle highlights one such invention, a “transformative water purifier” from the mind of 11-year-old Audrey Zhang of New York. Zhang’s fanciful machine takes in liquid from polluted rivers, lakes, and oceans, and then transforms it into clean, drinkable water. “When humans and animals drink this water, they will live a healthier life,” Zhang wrote in her description of the piece.

Zhang’s doodle was the 7th winner of the annual U.S. competition, which took in over 100,000 entries from kids in grades K-12. Zhang also got the chance to direct the animation of her doodle at Google’s headquarters, before flying back home with a $30,000 college scholarship and $50,000 Google for Education technology grant for her school.

But Zhang’s not about to rest on her laurels: She told Google employees that the dragons in her doodle will reappear in the novel she’s writing.
