UPDATE: Less than 24 hours after launching, Burton surpassed his goal. See below for his tear-filled reaction:

ORIGINAL POST: LeVar Burton is hoping to tap into your nostalgia — and your wallet — for a good cause.

The actor wants to revive his beloved children’s show Reading Rainbow as a web series, which he’ll use to introduce the joy of reading to a new generation. The Butterfly-in-the-Sky-Guy is asking fans to help raise $1 million via Kickstarter by July 2.

Burton’s vision for Reading Rainbow 2.0: Create a new version of the show that is available to any child with access to the Internet. He also wants to establish a classroom version of the program and allow low-income schools use of the materials for free.

Reading Rainbow originally ran from 1983 to 2006 and continued in reruns until 2009. For everyone who followed Burton’s advice — “take a look, it’s in a book” — and wants to help him continue his mission, rewards for donating to the campaign include Reading Rainbow tote bags, Burton meet-and-greets, and a once-in-a-lifetime chance to wear the visor his character Geordi wore in Star Trek: The Next Generation.

“So let’s do this, y’all,”  Burton says in the charming campaign video. “Reading Rainbow is back, for every child, everywhere… but you don’t have to take my word for it.”

Watch Burton’s full pitch below, and keep an eye out for a fun little Next Generation cameo at the end:
