'Star Wars VII' casting news: Which unknown character is this unknown British actress playing?

STAR-WARS-STORMTROOPERS

So we know that Star Wars: Episode VII is filming. We think we know that the movie will visit Tatooine; we possibly know that the movie will visit Hoth; we don’t really know anyone in the cast yet, although rumors strongly indicate that there will be actors in this movie, possibly some actors who you will recognize. Not in that category: Maisie Richardson-Sellers, an English actress who The Hollywood Reporter claims is a strong contender for a major role in the hotly anticipated septquel.

Since this is a decidedly unofficial rumor based on anonymous sources discussing a film that exists at the epicenter of the internet echo chamber, this seems like a fine moment to ask the question on everyone’s lips this minute: Who is Maisie Richardson-Sellers playing in Star Wars: Episode VII? The Reporter says that MRS would be up for the part of “a young black or mixed-race woman who may be a descendant of Jedi Knight Ben Kenobi.” Um, HEAD EXPLOSION because did you just use the phrase “Descendant of Jedi Knight Ben Kenobi”?

This is a mind-boggling revelation if true, since Kenobi never had any romantic plotline despite being played by noted romantic Ewan McGregor for three movies. Of course, using the phrase “who may be” could imply that MRS is playing a young woman who claims to be, like, Kenobi’s grand-daughter, and then the whole movie is about her proving herself as a Jedi, even though she is maybe not actually Kenobi’s granddaughter. (Mystery!)

This whole “descendant of Kenobi” thing could also be a classic Abrams™ Brand Red Herring. Last year a character breakdown list for Star Wars 7 was released, which mentioned two female characters of some importance: a “late-teen female, independent, good sense of humour, fit” and “a second young female, also late teens, tough, smart and fit.” So is MRS independent and funny, or is she tough and smart? If it’s the latter, she’s clearly the film’s Katniss, a young wannabe-Jedi with a chip on her shoulder who grew up on the mean streets of let’s-say-Corellia and now she’s going to use her Tough Smarts to help the other characters when they have to go on the run in the seedier side of the Star Wars universe. Conversely, if she’s the “independent and funny” one, she’s clearly some sort of aristocrat — let’s say maybe born on Coruscant after the Rebellion, raised in the Senate Chambers, and then she has to go on the run with at least one child of Han and Leia, while Han and Leia are held captive by the evil Darth Adam.

Or not. What do you think, fellow Star Wars people?
