If the Vampire Diaries PaleyFest panel proved anything, it’s that this cast and crew are total professionals when working in front of screaming fans. (After five years, they’re used to it.) Luckily, we were able to cut through the excitement and pull out some delicious tidbits about what’s to come for the rest of season 5.

Hear are eight things we took away from executive producers Caroline Dries and Julie Plec, and cast members Paul Wesley (Stefan), Nina Dobrev (Elena), and Ian Somerhalder (Damon).

Sorry Twitter, but there is no rain kiss on the books.
Recently on Twitter, fans have been begging for a Damon-Elena “rain kiss.” The notion, which came from nothing but the desire of fans, was quickly denied. After reminiscing about how cold Atlanta is at the moment, and how a previous rain scene caused Dobrev to become very ill, Somerhalder joked, “Write another rain kiss, I quit.” Julie Plec added, “There will be no rain, yet.”

Before Damon and Elena have any chance of getting back together, they have to stop taking their pants off.
When asked about hopes for a reunited Delena, Plec said, “They’ve got to have a lot of actual, legit, grown-up conversations.” Their problem, according to Somerhalder, is that “they keep taking their pants off, and that’s what gets in the way of the grown-up conversations.” And as fun as it is to watch them in various states of undress, Plec added that they’ll eventually need to have a talk about that part of their relationship as well.

Katherine could be in hell, but it’s really up to you.
When asked about Katherine’s farewell, Dries spoke of their desire to make it “epic” and make it “feel different from any death we’ve seen on the show.” Despite the fact that it happened in a church — and, fun fact, that was the church from The Originals — Plec said they leave Katherine’s whereabouts “up to the viewers’ imaginations.” On whether or not she could ever come back, Dries added, “Never say never.” Still, they did emphasize that they worked hard to give her a “profound exit.” Another fun fact: Katherine was originally supposed to die in the 100th episode. But when push came to shove, they decided to have her jump into Elena’s body and prolong that story just a bit more to give her the kind of epic farewell she deserved.

Sorry Klaroline fans, but Caroline is staying in Mystic Falls.
Plec started answering the anticipated Klaroline questions with these words of wisdom: “Happiness is not necessarily a drama magnet.” She added that even if the couple was still on the same show together, she’s sure they would’ve gotten together only to be ripped apart. But the bottom line is that they’re not on the same show, and, “I feel like Caroline Forbes is such a crucial element…on The Vampire Diaries,” Plec said. Plus, “Klaus has s–t to do.” And although Plec added a little “never say never” for fans, Somerhalder had a strong opinion on the matter: “Caroline’s staying with us!” Then again, as Plec pointed out, these characters are eternal. As for whether they could be each other’s last loves, she said that time-wise, “I don’t know that I’ll be alive.”

The Stefan-Elena-Damon love triangle is far from over.
When asked if fans impact the writing for Damon and Elena, Plec emphasized that “there is an equally vocal amount of people that are Team Stelena. I watch my shows and I like that Olivia likes Fitz and Jake. It’s all cyclical. It’s all part of their journey with each other. If we let one affect us too much than we’re not being honest to the story.” And for those of you wondering if the writers already know how it’s all going to end, they don’t. “There is no ending written in the stars, nor should there be, in my opinion,” Plec said. Speaking of fate, we haven’t heard the last of Stelena’s cosmic pull. Plec confirmed that the next few episodes will dig deeper into the idea of the universe pulling Stefan and Elena together, even promising that the two will talk about it and their love story. More specifically, the episode Wesley just finished directing has “some really good Stelena stuff,” Dries teased. The word “nostalgia” was thrown around, and Wesley promised moments that will be “reminiscent of season 1.” But if Dobrev had it her way, in the end, “I think after everything these boys have put her through, she’s going to become a lesbian.”

Fans will be getting more Caroline and Stefan moments this season.
Plec confirmed that “Caroline and Stefan have a lot to do together in the next couple episodes….They go through some stuff together.” Wesley added that they “shot a moment the other night that was kind of an intimate thing.” And in case you were wondering — yes, Wesley is totally rooting for the two of them to get together. But as Dries pointed out, Candice Accola’s problem is that she has chemistry with every single guy.

Damon’s really getting drunk on iced tea.
Those Salvatore brothers sure like to drink, and boy, do they like their bourbon (even at 11 a.m.). But Wesley revealed that, in reality, the actors are enjoying nice shots of iced tea. The more you know!

Things are going to get even worse for Stefan.
Dries teased that Stefan will soon have a “hard time” and that things “get even worse for Stefan toward the end.” The youngest Salvatore brother reportedly takes “a turn for the worse” toward the end of season 5. Could it have something to do with the doppelgänger blood that the Travelers have? That’s yet to be seen.
