'The Tomorrow People': How one twist got me hooked

I’ve watched The Tomorrow People from day one, and I’ve always enjoyed it. I think the world is intriguing, dangerous, sexy, and most importantly, entertaining. But Wednesday night’s episode was something special. It involved a twist that changed how I’ll watch the show moving forward. After Marla’s big reveal, my relationship with The Tomorrow People is no longer a matter of enjoyment or entertainment. I’m hooked. I’m in. I’ll see you all at the finale.

For months now, I have been watching Stephen discover what it means to be a Tomorrow Person. I’ve watched as he searched for his powerful father. I’ve watched as he tried to protect his mom and his little brother. And week after week, I’ve felt like Stephen’s home life was fine, but certainly not a point of intrigue for the show. However, all of that changed a few episodes back when Marla, Stephen’s mother, started dating a man named Peter. After Stephen tried to read Peter’s mind and was blocked, Stephen started to suspect that Peter was a paranormal. Flash forward to a camping trip and an unfortunate event with a cliff, and Stephen realized it wasn’t Peter who had been using powers. So who was it?

All signs pointed to Stephen’s little brother until, last night, Stephen confronted Luca about his abilities, and all Luca fessed up to was a new interest in marijuana. So what was going on?

In the episode’s final moments, Stephen was warned that Ultra was going to try and kill his best friend, who just so happened to be eating lunch with his mother. By the time he got there, he was too late. The guns were already firing. I gasped as I realized that they were going to kill Marla off. And then I screamed when I realized how very wrong I was.

It turns out that Marla is more than Stephen’s sweet mother who was once been left behind by her husband. Rather, she’s a Tomorrow Person! And not just any Tomorrow Person. The fact that she was able to stop bullets, in addition to the time she pushed Stephen out of Peter’s head, means she’s incredibly powerful. And did I mention that this new twist also means that Stephen is what they call a “synergist?” Basically, because both of his parents were paranormal, he’s more powerful than your average Tomorrow Person. In other words, this just. got. real.

I cannot describe how happy I am to have a (literal) badass mother on the show. Watching Stephen worry about protecting his family was starting to feel a little stale, and now, everything’s shifted within that dynamic. As a character, Marla was in desperate need of some complexity, something I didn’t even realize I’d been yearning for until now. And as a show, bringing in adult paranormals is a great way to broaden the universe. It adds more depth. It adds more danger. And I love it.

Lastly, not only is Marla being presented as a powerful paranormal, but she’s been able to keep her abilities a secret from everyone around her. Maybe I’m wrong, but it doesn’t seem to me like Jedekiah knows (or else why would he treat her like such a fragile mother hen?). And if she can remain a secret — assuming those Ultra hit men didn’t see her through the dust — then she just became the Tomorrow People’s biggest weapon.

All in all, expanding the Tomorrow People world is precisely what this show needed, and I can’t imagine a better person to add to the mix. I was a fan of the show before, but after Wednesday night, I think it’s safe to say I’m hooked. Now, how about we get Marla in on the action? A Marla-Founder showdown, perhaps? Let the games begin!
