Diver Tom Daley, the British heartthrob who was one of the faces of the 2012 London Games where he won a bronze medal in the 10m platform, has announced he’s dating a man in a video posted on YouTube. Watch it below. At around 2:10, the 19-year-old begins speaking about a change in his life that occurred last spring, “when I met someone and it made me feel so happy, so safe, and everything just feels great. And well that someone… is a guy,” he says. “Of course, I still fancy girls,” he continues, “but, I mean, right now I’m datin’ a guy and I couldn’t be happier. It feels safe, and it just really does feel right.”
Daley, who lost his father to cancer in 2011, goes on to anticipate fan reaction, whether it be disbelief or questioning what his late dad would say (“He always said to me, ‘As long as you’re happy, I’m happy,’ and right now, I couldn’t be happier”). While his mother and close friends have been extremely supportive, he says the rest of his family have had “mixed opinions” about how he should handle his happiness: keep it a secret, just do a statement, do a magazine cover or a TV interview. “I didn’t want to get my words twisted. I wanted to put an end to all the rumors, the speculation, just say it and just tell you guys,” he explains. “My friends and family are always there to support me, and I hope you guys can be, too.”
Daley has his sights set on winning a gold in Rio in 2016, and is headed to a training camp until Christmas.
