'How I Met Your Mother' recap: How I [spoiler]ed to your mother

Well, I certainly didn’t see that coming.

After a few episodes that have tested the patience of some viewers (“We’re STILL NOT at the wedding?!” they say) , How I Met Your Mother has rewarded us with a huge moment. But as usual, it didn’t take place in the present-day.

You see, thirty-three hours before the wedding, a few things were going on: Barney’s mom and Robin were still in a massive feud, Marshall was still on the road with Daphne, and Ted was still trying to convince the hotel desk attendant that he wasn’t a lonely, suicidal man.

Starting with the latter point — because that’s how we eventually found ourselves at the aforementioned Big Moment — Lily convinced Ted that he should take Cassie (Anna Camp) to the lighthouse he so desperately wanted to check out. By Lily’s reasoning, Cassie was a normal-sized, attractive girl, and choosing her was a far better option than a life of endless quests for the Perfect Girl. Later, she would admit this was bad advice, but at the time, Ted went with it.

Like I said — bad idea. Cassie twisted her ankle, so Ted had to carry her to the top of the lighthouse, and once there, Ted tossed his cookies. According to Ted, the beauty of that location was, as a result of the incident, forever dead. Or so he thought.

That’s when we jumped two years in the future, and found Ted standing at the top with The Mother. (She’s back!) And there, as they bonded over the beauty of the landscape in front of them, he proposed. As you probably guessed, she said yes.

This wasn’t the only tender moment in the episode.

Elsewhere, Robin’s feud with Barney’s mom, Loretta, was finally put to a rest, which is a small miracle because it got pretty nasty. (Two words: Egg war.) But Loretta buried the hatchet after Barney proved to her just how in love he was with Robin. How’d he do so? He shared with Loretta that Robin could no longer have kids, but said he wasn’t marrying “some future possibility of starting a family, I’m marrying a girl who means more to me than kids.” (P.S. – We were shown the moment when Robin told Barney. Barney’s response? He gave her a hug. Excuse me while I awwww forever.)

Loretta hard feelings further softened when she learned Robin’s mom wasn’t coming to the wedding. (According to Robin, she never got on the plane because she was “too scared.”) Upon hearing that, Loretta gave her daughter-in-law to-be a hug, and asked Robin to call her “mom.”

I hope Robin’s mom finds a way to get to the wedding…mostly because I love playing casting couch.

Meanwhile, the storyline with Marshall and Daphne continued to be pretty uninspiring; I just can’t seem to warm up to the character after our less-than-pleasant introduction. The best thing to come out of this arc tonight was the call-back to The Proclaimers. And now that song’s stuck in my head.

A few more tidbits:

Observation: Between last week’s anecdote about that time Barney deuced his pants at Macy’s and tonight’s anecdote about him peeing himself, my message to Barney: Dude, control yourself!

I have to have: A “Totally Awesome Ted” mug.

Trivia: Ted once had a best friend…that was a balloon.

Am I the only one…hoping that Cleveland will erect a sign that says “Birthplace of Ted Mosby” on the day the HIMYM series finale airs? Get on that, Ohio!

Notable return of the week: Clint! (And Virginia)
