When the Travel Channel’s Hotel Impossible decided to launch its two-part special, Operation Sandy, Anthony Melchiorri and his crew headed to Seaside Heights, New Jersey, nine months after Hurricane Sandy. They expected to find everything from struggling businesses to water damage, but the one thing they didn’t expect was what they found at the Thunderbird Motel, a family-owned establishment in Seaside Heights.

After visiting the hard-hit motel in hopes of helping to repair it, Anthony immediately ran into problems when he upset the family by making their son look like an idiot (or so they claimed). Arguments and death threats ensued, before Anthony managed to get things back on track — until the father let it slip that this hotel was one of hundreds for him. Unlike what he had said earlier about this hotel being his 401K, he actually had $40 million worth of properties. And to top that off, he wasn’t even going to let his son run the hotel, which was the main reason Anthony had agreed to help.

After learning that everything they were told was a lie, Hotel Impossible experienced a first in the show’s history: Anthony walked away from a hotel. Needless to say, it wasn’t quite the post-Sandy tearjerker I was expecting. Hopefully in the second hour of the special, Anthony can find some Jersey Shore residents who actually need help.
