After watching the newly released iPad Air commercial, you may find yourself wondering why you feel so calm, so full of life, hopeful for the future — but also, with a slight edge of terror. Well, that’s because the crisp, clean TV spot is narrated by all-around wonderful human Bryan Cranston, who most famously also portrays all-around terrifying character Walter White from Breaking Bad.
The commercial premiered just a day after Apple announced the iPad Air (and the iPad mini with retina display), and taking a note from Breaking Bad, it comes with a major plot twist. Cranston isn’t waxing poetic about a pencil — there’s a whip-thin iPad hiding behind that No. 2. You got me good, Apple! That is seriously thin.
The commercial comes from a long line of Apple incorporating celebrities into advertising their latest innovations. You may remember Zooey Deschanel asking Siri if it was raining while standing in a room with windows, or way back in 1997, Richard Dreyfuss narrating the “Think Different” campaign: “Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers.”
The latest ad with Cranston is a little more subtle, just the hint that this might be the voice of someone who means business. Even if you don’t need to take your iPad to space, think about it this way: it’s quick and portable access to listen to Bryan Cranston read “Ozymandias” anytime you want.
