Nintendo Wii U sales triple after price drop

While the videogame world waits quivering with trepidatious excitement for the oncoming arrival of the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One, Nintendo has seen a significant jump in sales for its third-way Wii U. As reported by GamesIndustry, the tablet-control console saw a 200 percent spike in sales last month, following a $50 drop in price for the Wii U Deluxe Set to $299.

A possible X factor: the new Deluxe console also included a downloadable HD edition of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, the 2002 cel-shaded GameCube curio that has gained steady acclaim over the last decade.

Maybe this will lead Nintendo into a new vintage phase, releasing HD-quality editions of their back catalog. The company could use some more games, period. Going into this console-packed Holiday season, Nintendo has only two major releases: A new edition of Wii Fit and a new Super Mario 3D Land game where the characters can put on catsuits.

Still, the new price point might help Nintendo’s case in the next-generation console wars: It’s $100 cheaper than the PS4 and $200 cheaper than the possibly NSA-sponsored XBox One. Anyhow, the Wii U is selling better than it was, so we can all go back to complaining that there isn’t a new Zelda yet.
