Miley Cyrus is perfectly happy being Single Miley, the singer told Ellen DeGeneres on Friday’s The Ellen DeGeneres Show.
Cyrus and actor Liam Hemsworth called off their engagement in mid-September. DeGeneres recalled, “So the last time you were here, I threw you an engagement party.”
“Do you want your money back?” joked Cyrus, as clips of male strippers cavorting around her on a November 2012 episode were shown. DeGeneres pointed to the screen and said, “You enjoyed it.”
The host’s penchant for lighthearted banter continued with Cyrus revealing she’s in good spirits following the end of her relationship.
DeGeneres asked, “Is that an awkward thing that all this attention is going on and you’re not with him anymore?”
“It’s not really as awkward ’cause I’m living it and I think people spend more time actually thinking about that than I really do, because I just believe that when a chapter is done, you have to close it and start that new one, and that’s kind of where I am right now,” Cyrus said.
On her detractors, “They’ve actually shown more respect. I don’t really look up anything, so maybe they haven’t been showing respect,” she said, “but from what I have seen I feel like people have really focused on my music right now.”
Cyrus revealed that her new album, Bangerz, is about Hemsworth: “The whole album is a story of that. And I think it says that, starting with “Adore You” and ending with “Someone Else,” is I feel you can really have — find like this arc of like growth.”
She said that when she finally listened to her record in her car, it all made sense. “I think I knew more intuitively what my life — where my life was going than I actually thought I did at the time.”
Are they still friends? Noting that she’s been too busy to see anyone, Cyrus said, “I’m just letting that chapter kind of close and then just looking forward to that new one.”
“I keep saying I’m the happiest I’ve ever been and that’s not even a dig. That’s just me because I really am genuinely happy, finally with myself, which I think sometimes it takes you separating yourself from someone else to really be happy with who you are,” she told DeGeneres. “I’ve never been able to just be alone and I’m obsessed with being alone and like hearing my thoughts.”
