At a Human Rights Campaign gala Saturday, Wentworth Miller revealed in a video obtained by TMZ that he had tried to kill himself as a teenager. The actor, best known for his role on Fox’s Prison Break, came out as a gay man last month.

“The first time I tried to kill myself I was 15,” he says in the video. “I waited until my family went away for the weekend and I was alone in the house and I swallowed a bottle of pills. I don’t remember what happened over the next couple days, but I’m pretty sure come Monday morning I was on a bus back to school pretending everything was fine. And when someone asked me if that was a cry for help, I say no, because I told no one.”

Miller came out publicly in August, in a letter to the St. Petersburg International Film Festival declining to come because of Russia’s anti-gay laws. “As a gay man, I must decline,” Miller wrote in his letter. “I am deeply troubled by the current attitude toward and treatment of gay men and women by the Russian government. The situation is in no way acceptable, and I cannot in good conscience participate in a celebratory occasion hosted by a country where people like myself are being systematically denied their basic right to live and love openly.”

At Saturday’s gala, Miller lamented not coming out sooner. “I had multiple opportunities to speak my truth, which was that I was gay,” he said. “But I chose not to. I was out in private, to family and friends … but professionally, publicly, I was not.”
