Three-time Academy Award nominee Michelle Williams will make her Broadway debut as Sally Bowles in Roundabout Theater Company’s revival of Cabaret.

Cabaret will play a 24-week limited engagement, beginning previews March 21 and officially opening April 24 at the Kit Kat Klub: Studio 54. Williams will appear alongside Alan Cumming as the Emcee, who starred in the last revival of the musical in 1998. The production will be directed by Sam Mendes and co-directed/choreographed by Rob Marshall.

“Michelle Williams is an actress of rare gifts and she will make an astonishing Sally Bowles,” says Rob Marshall. And I am especially excited that Alan Cumming is reprising his extraordinary performance as the Emcee for a whole new audience to experience.”

Initially, Cabaret producers wanted to cast Amazing Spider-Man star Emma Stone as the iconic Sally Bowles — the role made famous by Liza Minnelli in Bob Fosse’s 1972 film adaptation. However, Stone’s reps said that prior movie commitments prevented her from taking the part.

Williams got her big break on Dawson’s Creek before embarking on a celebrated film career that includes Academy Award nominations for Best Supporting Actress (Brokeback Mountain) and Best Actress (Blue Valentine and My Week With Marilyn).

The original Broadway production of Cabaret, based on the book written by Christopher Isherwood, opened in 1966. The production won the Tony for Best Musical and Best Score with composer John Kander lyricist Fred Ebb, and was later revived in 1987 and 1998. The original design team will also return for the 2014 production featuring set and club design by Robert Brill, costume design by William Ivey Long, lighting design by Peggy Eisenhauer and Mike Baldassari and Brian Ronan. Patrick Vaccariello is the musical director. The full cast will be announced shortly.
