Shailene Woodley chops her hair for 'Fault in Our Stars' (and a good cause) -- PHOTO

Starting with her breakthrough role in The Secret Life of the American Teenager, Shailene Woodley has been known for her long, brunette locks. For her Golden Globe-nominated performance in The Descendants, her flowing hair was nearly its own character, as she whipped it to and fro to drive home her teenage angst.

But for her upcoming lead role in the movie adaptation of The Fault in Our Stars, her mane had to go — and she made the most of the big change by donating her trademark tresses to the nonprofit Children With Hair Loss, which will create a wig for someone in need. Her new bob made its debut on Twitter, and though she looks a little apprehensive about the adjustment, calling it a “work in progress,” she also notes “#itgrowsback.”

Woodley first announced her plans on Tumblr last week in a poetic post that explained her relationship with her long hair over the years and why she’s ready to cut loose. She also encouraged her fans to follow her lead: “If you are in the position to cut off 8 inches of your hair, then I strongly urge you to do it. There are so many human beings out there who would LOVE the opportunity to possess long hair, but simply cannot because of their current situation. Let’s share!”

Hazel Grace Lancaster, Woodley’s character in The Fault in Our Stars, is a 16-year-old living with cancer who joins a support group at her parents’ urging. She is described in the book as having very short, brown hair. Fault author John Green posted another photo of Woodley’s new ‘do — and her handfuls of hair — on his Tumblr with the caption “Shailene’s hair for Hazel!”
