Maggie Gyllenhaal will return to the New York stage next year, in Penelope Skinner’s The Village Bike, MCC Theater announced Tuesday.
The show, directed by Sam Gold, originally premiered at London’s Royal Court Theatre in 2011. This production will star Gyllenhaal as Becky, who is “pregnant—and friskier than ever. But she can’t seem to get the attention of her husband, who is preoccupied with preparing for the baby’s months-away arrival. So Becky takes matters into her own hands and sets out on an adventure that starts with the purchase of a used bike from a man in town and takes her further than she ever expected she’d go.”
Gyllenhaal, who earned an Oscar nomination for Crazy Heart, was last seen onstage in 2011 in an off-Broadway production of Anton Chekhov’s Three Sisters; she’ll next be seen in White House Down later this month.
The Village Bike will run from May 21 to June 28 next year at MCC Theater.
