This is a stressful time to be a Vampire Diaries fan. Not only is next week the season finale, but Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev have ended their adorably zen, fedora-laden relationship of the past three years.
Why the organic-loving, optimistic couple called it quits, nobody seems to know. But after the show wrapped, the couple went their separate ways. Nina chose to spend some girl time in Florida while Ian traveled the globe, during which he recently tweeted, “A THOUGHT FOR TODAY: People change and forget to tell each other. -Lillian Hellman, playwright (1905-1984)” Could this have something to do with his breakup? It’s possible. But if you follow Ian’s Twitter like I do– and maybe get his tweets sent to your phone — you also know that thoughtful quotes, much like energy-consumption tips and selfies, are par for the course.
But stepping away from the “whys” of it all, let’s look at this split in a new light: How does Nian’s split affect the hearts of Delena ‘shippers everywhere? For some people, the fact that Ian and Nina were a real-life couple amplified their love for seeing Delena together. So are fans now going to jump aboard the Stelena ‘ship, or rather just jump overboard and forget the ‘ships altogether? You guys tell me.
In a week’s time, we will know if Elena wants to be with Damon or Stefan (or neither). Are Delena shippers worried that, no matter her choice, the Delena dynamic will change now that Nian is no more? Will we lose those steamy, chemistry-heavy glances and passionate make-outs? Personally, I don’t think so.
But does it change the way you approach watching the two of them on screen and/or your feelings about Delena? Discuss!
