If you’re among those still wondering if Robin is the perfect person for Barney (or vice-versa), I urge you to give it up, friend. Because Robin is probably the only girl on this planet who knows exactly how Barney works. The proof was in tonight’s episode, when Robin had a hand in pulling off a pretty amazing thing in honor of Barney. There was even a surprise cameo that rocked his (and our!) world.
In the episode, Robin and Co. had to come up with a plan for Barney’s epic bachelor party, which turned out to be a daunting task. After all, they pondered, how do you plan an unforgettable night for the guy who lives every night like it’s the best night EVER? So they constructed a plan to ensure Barney had the worst bachelor party of all time — complete with a cheap hotel room, a clown, a stripper he couldn’t enjoy (QUINN!), and Ralph Macchio, aka, the “wrong Karate Kid.” (I saw it as Robin’s revenge for The Robin from earlier this season.)
The truth about Robin’s plan didn’t come to light until the end of the episode, which made the reveal all the more rewarding. Until that point, we simply assumed Barney was the victim of terrible planning. Meanwhile, Robin had a subplot that only made entire thing more convincing.
While everyone else was out, Robin found herself stuck in a one-on-one dinner with Loretta, Barney’s mother. And throughout the night, they traded phonecalls where each party seemed to get increasingly frustrated. And by the near-end of the episode, Barney was at his wit’s end, had gambled away $85,000, Marshall was being held by the mob as collateral, and Robin was entirely worn down by her dinner with Loretta. Tensions were high between the couple, but they really reached out-of-this-world levels when Robin saw that Quinn had been at Barney’s bachelor party. Fuming, Robin claimed that was the last straw and threw Barney’s engagement ring back in his face.
That’s when we learned of the plan, fittingly called The Barney.
When the truth came out, Barney was delighted because he ended up getting a night he’d never forget and everything he’d ever wanted from his “Bro Mitzvah.” The cherry on top of the sundae of awesome? An appearance from the “REAL” Karate Kid — William Zabka, who we learned had been present for the entire episode, posing as the clown.
HIMYM has been known to deliver mythology-based jaw-droppers, like with the death of Marshall’s dad, the reveal that Barney would one day marry Robin, etc. But in this was one of my favorite just-for-fun surprises they’ve delivered in years.
Also, let’s just take a moment to acknowledge Lily’s obsession with Ralph Macchio. 1) Who can blame her? 2) That small scene where she licked her Ralph Macchio hand might have been the funniest thing she’s done all season. (I couldn’t stop laughing.)
I welcome your thoughts on the episode, friends. Please tell me someone else is as happy as I am to have the words “William Zabka” on PopWatch.
