SPOILER ALERT: Don’t read the following if you haven’t seen the finale of Bones.

In the last episode of season 8, hacker-slash-serial-killer Christopher Pelant (Andrew Leeds) returns to terrorize the FBI and the Jeffersonian squints. This time, Booth (David Boreanaz) appears to be the target — as agent friends of his begin to die all around him. From behind his computers, the disfigured Pelant manipulates the daughter of an agent who died in the field to kill the others. Everyone believes Booth will be the final victim, but in the end, it’s Sweets (John Francis Daley) who Pelant was after and not Booth. (Pelant was using Sweets’ unpublished work as a guide for his killing spree.) Seeley shoots the girl just as she’s about to shoot Sweets, and the danger is over — for now.

More importantly, in the middle of their investigation and after eight seasons of back-and -forths, Bones (Emily Deschanel) finally decides to propose Booth. Here is their very sweet conversation, prompted by a gift of jerky from Temperance to Seeley, in all of its unedited glory.

Bones: “I want you to be happy, that’s all I want.”

Booth: “What’s this about? Okay look, I’m going to be fine.”

Bones: “I know. I mean, I don’t know. And neither of us know. We hope. I mean I could be the target or you could die of a heart attack or I could get hit by a bus.”

Booth: “Okay, slow down. Will you just slow down?”

Bones: “The point is, I want to marry you. Will you marry me, Booth?”

Booth: “Are you serious?”

Bones: “Yes. I’ve been afraid. I’ve been stubborn. And I’ve been in love. And marriage would make you so happy.”

Booth: “Are you sure? You’re not just saying this because of Pelant and everything that’s going on here?”

Bones: “Positive. All of this just made me see things more clearly. I love you. I want you to be my husband. I want to spend the rest of my life with you. Say something.”

Booth: “Yes. Of course. Yes.”

And that’s when the internal squealing begins. Alas, we’re only 34 minutes into the hour — and you know something will go wrong. And go wrong it does. At the end of the night, while Booth, Bones, and Christine are playing in the park, our favorite FBI agent receives a call from the devious Pelant. Seeley excuses himself by telling Brennan that it’s his mother, and Pelant gives Booth a warning — marry Bones and five innocent people will die. Oh and, Pelant says Booth can’t tell Bones why he’s turning her down, either. The mastermind knows Booth would never put his own happiness above the lives of others. Suddenly, we know what Booth will do.

Now for the terrible part. Later that night, Booth comes downstairs while Bones is reading a bridal magazine. Let the heartbreak commence:

Bones: “I don’t understand why all these women are wearing white dresses. There’s no way they are all virgins … Is something the matter?”

Booth: “We need to talk.”

Bones: “Okay.”

Booth: “About the wedding, about us getting married …”

Bones: “Oh the ceremony doesn’t matter to me. And I won’t be wearing white.”

Booth: “I don’t think we should do it. I should have thought this through before.”

Bones: “But this is what you want.”

Booth: “But you didn’t.”

Bones: “But I do now. I love you. I want to marry you.”

Booth: “Because we’ve been under so much pressure. I mean that’s what’s really going on here. Like you said, it’s just a piece of paper. What we have already is enough.”

Bones: “You’re right. You’re right. It’s been a stressful time. I’m impressed that you’re finally seeing things from my perspective.”

Then the kicker …

Booth: “Bones? Umm, we’re okay, right?”

Bones: “Of course.”

Booth: “Right.”

Oof. Cut to shots of Booth and Bones, alone, looking like they are both about to cry. (Sidenote: How great are Deschanel and Boreanaz here?)

Basically, Pelant is still on the loose, and the Booth and Brennan relationship is potentially irrevocably damaged. Does anyone think this is more disappointing then the coma dream sex?
