'What's Trending' host Shira Lazar: Who's winning the social media Oscar race?

SHIRA-LAZAR

As buzz around the 85th annual Academy Awards leads up to the big night, movie lovers, celebrities, and experts are all taking to social networks to reveal their Oscar picks. But the choices that are making the most noise online might not be the ones that statistics analysis expert Nate Silver came up with, and they certainly show some interesting differences from what the critics are saying. But Oscar night always yields some surprises. So move over Ebert, social media data is in the house!

At Oscar.com, the Academy invites you to join the conversation in their Oscar Buzz section which reveals some of the current trending topics, including Adele, James Bond, and Naomie Harris. But let’s take a deeper dive and see what some data analytics firms and social media experts are seeing when they crunch the numbers, shall we?

Digital marketing agency organic.com launched Awardsmeter.com which presents the social buzz around nominees based on the highest number of positive tweets compared to peers in the same category. Here are their most buzz-worthy picks:

Best Picture: Argo seems to be in the lead followed by Django Unchained and Lincoln in third place.

Best Actor: Denzel Washington in Flight is ahead of Les Miserables‘ Hugh Jackman.

Best Actress: Jessica Chastain is number one for Zero Dark Thirty.

Best Director: Chatter is leaning towards Steven Spielberg for Lincoln.

Brandwatch is also jumping into the Oscar data pool race creating a one-of-a-kind Oscars predictive Data Visualization and algorithm that “sorts out the Oscars madness by disregarding overall ‘buzz’ and instead focusing on top choice nominees and the positive mentions they generate.” Currently they are mapping results by pulling in 21,000 tweets and 304,550 online mentions and growing. According to their Dataviz:

Best Actor: Daniel Day Lewis is in line to win by both the public and the critics’ choice

Best Actress: Jessica Chastain has the critics’ choice but Jennifer Lawrence has won over the public (this isn’t surprising considering her age and ability to connect with a younger audience on social media)

Best Director: This category also seems to be divided, with Silver Linings Playbook’s David O. Russell winning over the critics, and Steven Spielberg the fans.

Best Picture: Argo might just have it in the bag, winning everyone’s hearts on social media.

Yahoo! also recently released data on the most-searched actors and nominated films this year, finding Silver Linings Playbook, Argo, and Lincoln topping their rankings. Bradley Cooper, Christoph Waltz, and Hugh Jackman were the most-searched nominated actors in the past 30 days; Jennifer Lawrence, Anne Hathaway, and Jessica Chastain were the most-searched nominated actresses.

If all these Oscar stats are giving you a headache, take a break and enjoy this not so serious compilation of YouTube stars predicting Oscar winners before settling in to watch the big show Sunday night.
