PopWatch Planner: The Super Bowl, the Grammys, and the return of 'Community'

51st Annual Grammy Awards - Show

Once a year, America puts aside its preference for tasteful understatement and simple pleasures to celebrate everything that is good and loud about sports, television, violence, capitalism, and patriotism. It’s called the Super Bowl — a super… bowl — the clumsy but perfectly christened title for an American manufactured spectacular. The Ravens meet the 49ers tonight in New Orleans, but regardless of the outcome, the commercials will be analyzed, the enormous television audience will be documented, and the buffalo wings will be picked clean.

Check out our other picks for the week below and tell us what you’re watching. Have a great week!

SUNDAY
Super Bowl XLVII, CBS, 6:30 p.m.

The Baltimore Ravens will face off against the San Francisco 49ers in the most-watched television event of the year. More than 100 million viewers will likely tune in to see which Harbaugh brother will hoist the Lombardi Trophy, to watch BeyoncĂ© perform at halftime, and, of course, to see all the dazzling 30-second commercials that companies shelled out $4 million to air. (That’s $133,333 per second.)

MONDAY
Monday Mornings series premiere, 10 p.m., TNT

David E. Kelley joins forces with Dr. Sanjay Gupta for this new hospital drama, which stars Alfred Molina as a demanding hospital chief of staff tasked with holding his arrogant but flawed doctors to account during intense weekly morbidity and mortality meetings.

TUESDAY
Smash season premiere, 9 p.m., NBC

Smash 2.0 raises its curtain after an off-season of changes that included a new showrunner and a new diva, Jennifer Hudson. New tune or same old song and dance?

WEDNESDAY
CSI, CBS, 10 p.m.

Ted Danson’s D.B. Russell joins forces with Mac Taylor (Gary Sinise) in the first part of a CSI crossover that wraps up on Friday’s CSI: NY. It’s personal for Taylor, who visits Las Vegas to surprise his girlfriend — only to find her missing.

THURSDAY
Community season premiere, NBC 8 p.m.

Parting with 30 Rock was such sweet sorrow. Saying hello again to Community after a prolonged absence can only help soothe the pain. In the long-awaited premiere, the gang competes in a Hunger Games-like competition for placement in a class called, The History of Ice Cream.

FRIDAY
Identity Thief opens in theaters.

Take Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, or Midnight Run, or Due Date, and simply plug in Melissa McCarthy and Jason Bateman. That’s the gist of Identity Thief, where a poor schlep tracks down the crooked woman who’s ruined his credit by stealing his identity.

SATURDAY
Justin Bieber hosts Saturday Night Live. 11:30 p.m., NBC

Bieber hosts SNL for the first time, and he’ll also provide the music, one week after releasing his latest album, Believe.

SUNDAY
The 55th Annual Grammy Awards, 8:00 p.m., CBS

Alicia Keys, Frank Ocean, and Justin Timberlake are just some of the giant names scheduled to perform live on music’s biggest night. Ocean is tied with five other artists for the most nominations — six — and the races seem wide open without a dominant favorite.
