Forget This is 40. What’s really on Judd Apatow’s mind these days is This is Broadway.

In the January 2013 issue of GQ, the comedy guru reveals that he’s writing a play, and no, it doesn’t star Seth Rogen. Heck, it’s not even a comedy. “I have a great idea. Maybe like the best idea I’ve ever had,” he said. “It requires me to create characters and situations that have absolutely nothing to do with my experience.”

That may be a positive thing creatively, since Apatow’s recent experience reads like a series of Variety news briefs. This year, in addition to writing, producing, and directing This is 40 with his wife, actress Leslie Mann, Apatow produced WanderlustThe Five-Year Engagement, and HBO’s breakout comedy Girls.”It’s about victims of the criminal-justice system and the challenges they face,” he said, of his stage idea. “I am excited to write something which has a social conscience. That is not something I have attempted before, and I hope I am up for the challenge.”

“I’m noticing that I really wish there was another part of my relationship with the crowd,” he said. “I miss doing something where I’m interacting more with the audience. I like the idea of writing something and rewriting it every night based on how it’s playing.”
