Possible 'Drive' spinoff? Director says Ryan Gosling's Driver 'might return in another film'

Drive didn’t make very much money when it hit theaters last September. That’s not surprising, considering that the movie — nominally a crime drama — played out a little bit like John Hughes-meets-Sergio Leone, with a few mashed heads and a curiously limited amount of actual driving. But the movie has a fervent fanbase — a fanbase which will probably thrill to director Nicolas Winding Refn’s utterly random and throwaway claim that Ryan Gosling’s nameless Driver might return, somehow, in some kind of spinoff, maybe. Asked about the possibility of a sequel by the Evening Standard, Refn said simply: “That is never going to happen.” But he followed that up with an enticing tease: “The character of the Driver might return in another film. We’re playing with that idea. We’ll see what happens.”

Refn has already worked with Gosling on another film, Only God Forgives, and the pair are still linked to a Logan’s Run remake, so it could be that when Refn says “We’re playing with that idea,” he really means “Me and Ry-Ry were in line at In-N-Out last week and were talking about a Drive spinoff, like maybe he fights Frankenstein or something.” But the idea of the Driver appearing in a separate movie isn’t totally crazy. Refn made his name off the Pusher trilogy, a series of films which were linked together but didn’t necessarily lead into each one another. Refn has also described Drive as a superhero movie — and what is a superhero movie without a sequel? Anyhow, this is probably going to join The Vega Brothers and Deadpool in some happy corner of spinoff purgatory. Just in case, though, I’m going to listen to the Drive soundtrack another fifty thousand times.
